    The times at Northampton were great. I could smell it when footage came on. The early comps where the American pros were over, were so good. The look on their faces, when many of them had never heard of him, and he would annihilate the street course like nobody else, making look easy. Classic. 94 was epic. He was at munster championship in Germany in 92, and he annihilate the large mini ramp outside the hall. Like the footage on the wooden mini ramp near the start that looks like it was 92. He did skate minis a lot back then. Endless runs of the hardest tricks.

    I wanna give a shout out to the OG's at my local skatepark. In the mid 90s they ranged from like 27 to 35, I knew them when I was 14-18 and they honestly were so much like Tom Penny in their chill authentic demeanour, many in style as well, a couple even had DEEP bags of tricks but others just had their small bag of signature moves. And they weren't copying him, because he was just a kid in England at the time. But they were never filming or anything, cruising around doing the sickest tricks at various spots and parks and moving on like ghosts. When they'd briefly breeze through the park everyone would stop and watch and then they'd just disappear and you never knew if you'd see them again or where they would go. They were always super chill and kind and encouraging, would slap the deck with their board and whistle when you had some little trick breakthrough they could do in their sleep. Usually high as fuck and/or deep in tall boy beers, maybe sleeping with borderline legal girls, usually filthy ... idk, but they were sick man. Really just lived the lifestyle and lived in the moment. My generation were kind of more stressed and focussed on trying to get good, though nothing compared to today and still we didn't film shit. Those OGs just skated without a care, full zen mode, very Penny-esque.

    I don't know if it is just me, but I can see quite a lot of Tom Penny in Yuto Horigome. Maybe not all of Yuto's designer kit, Penny was never really one for designer clobber, but just the way he rides on a board, catches tricks and lands - the precision and the floaty, fluent style. They both skate street but also skate transition, both skating Vert without pads, lol. They're also both fairly quiet, chilled out characters.

      As a skater during late 90s when penny was in his prime , like 96.. I think you’re onto something . Penny was more in his own world though vs doing ads and caring much, but the shit he was doing was so far beyond his peers , very much like what I see Yuto doing. The entire vibe in 90s was different than now though, much more about being an individual and non conformist overall and I think Penny somehow fit that ideal too .. like really not giving a shit what others think of you, which is hard to imagine in todays society with nonstop social media. They both seem super chill when rotating tricks too, like I can imagine penny doing some of the 360 to feebles or smiths I see yuto doing if he were skating today

    • @makeit-se2eq
      @makeit-se2eq 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      think yuto more calculated has worked for his skills more but yh deffo has similar style energy there, tom penny seems more flowly natural like one those dudes thats just designed to be on a board. regardless of what style it is they have theres just some dudes that look like born to ride a board, naturally talented.
      yuto looks like hes worked hard for what hes got where theres a energy of tom merely just falling into it if that makes sense.
      like there skater friends from back day 1 was average or even below average when started not a natural another was a natural seemed like could skate tranny park street hills and just looked at home on a board and everything he did looked good out these two dudes cause the one that werent a natural actually has a bigger bag tricks now and also shreds looks damn good doing it, the natural however has less tricks still shreds looks good but has less passion overall for progressing maybe cause hasnt needed to work for it as much or just cause gets what want the feel out of skating with what does, he does some gnarly stuff just he no longer cares for super tech stuff or fluff, i actually can ask him to do a tech trick and even if he dont know it hell bash it out in a few runs or tries but he wont necessarily care for it he says he only does tricks he likes feel good. he also into bmx too so has other sport passions.
      other dude super passionate and does try to learn new tricks and solidify them also he skates real good but unlike the other dude i wouldnt be able to ask him bash out some unknown trick and him get it within few tries or whatever, whereas the other dude stuff on a board just seems to click in his head brain and boom hes ripping seen him hop on other boards skate in goofy shoes all sorts he still manages to just skate and look good

    • @KOL630
      @KOL630 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I think you mean his technical ability rather than his style. TP in his heyday had arguably better style than anyone, ever. This is why he is so highly revered. Also his tricks back then were still highly technical even by todays standards. Name a trick he could do it regular, switch, nollie etc. a true master. Only the OG’s get this.

    • @morgellon7877
      @morgellon7877 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Athletic? If you want athletic, watch Nyjah or Sean White. Tom Penny is just skateboarding, not trying to be an athlete; in that way, he is not too dissimilar from many pros. People stopped trying so hard in the mid-90's because there was a tech explosion in the early 90's; it wasn't cool to try anymore. The "pathetic shit" you're talking about was probably done by pros who could annihilate a mini or ledge but were just over it.

      @makeit-se2eq 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the equipment wasnt he same had lotta shoddy cheap wheels, lotta crappy truck brands.... heavier too, and deck companies popping up tryna just make a quick buck throwing out poor quality wood boards eh... concaves and shapes, add in experimentation in shoes.
      the stuff people did on that gear... wasnt pathetic at all they were products of their time and equipment had also imagine expensive and damn niche time too to be skating in UK.
      skatebaorders nowadays have better boards both wood and shapes concaves too choose from and sizes... you get pick more a wider variety, wheels have improved the formulas, and truck companies have made improvements too as have skate shoes.
      skating is art there were people that approached it athletically or technically but crappy equipment will limit the ceiling can reach with it.
      skatings skating also people have come made new tricks help each other out and yh progression happens as people see stuff and open peoples mind to what can even be done on a plank with some wheels on and griptape.
      his style is not average he has pretty unique style even for a shredder, how technical he skates with that style is rare even by todays standards hes very flowy calm whether skating gnarly hench big things or chilling skating small stuff messing about.
      also more people have gotten in to sport so talent more likely enter skating rather than miss it now..., modern day example ive noticed as been out of skating for 5-6 years cause injury still out of it..., is female skaters ive watched them recently on youtube and there is now genuine rippers in that now and not just a meagre few... or a 'good for a girl' thing but actual shredders with style and tech tricks, that werent about really even few years back when i was still in skating there were odd few sponsored chicks and good yh but not on par with male equivalent pros on same team even now though theres some truly amazing female skaters popping up (cause skateboarding become more accessible to chicks more them engaging in the culture sport and real outlier type talent is coming through (population boom in general has influeced the progression of skating as people feed off each other too)
