Interesting! I’m just an average 10 hdcp golfer who doesn’t hit the ball particularly far, but just through playing rounds and trial and error, found similar results. I carry both a 7 iron and 7 hybrid. Love them both and hit them similar distances but with the hybrid I generally hit the ball much higher and often straighter. Plus when facing intimidating shots into tough greens I have more confidence looking down at the hybrid. Your video reinforces what I discovered for myself. Great work again! Thank you!
I once went for a fitting at a decent place cost me a few 💰💰 asked him what I should do with my longer irons 2&3. He said “sell them or chuck them in a bin”. He then proceeded to fit me with hybrids for the bottom of my bag including a hybrid as a 5 iron replacement. Changed my game totally.
@WatchMePlayGolf mate, you can have a look at the lofts of your irons and then compare them to lofts oh hybrids out there. Don't get to caught up on the number on the bottom of the club, distance gapping is more important. My 6 iron is the longest iron in my bag and I have a 22 degree hybrid and a 25 degree hybrid as my 4 and 5 iron replacement and a 19.5 degree 5 wood to replace my 3 iron. In terms of low shots, you can still play these with hybrids, you just need to practice the technique.
Great video, I have struggled with hybrids forever. I love the idea of hybrids and always envious of folks who can control them but everytime I have tried one for an extended test the left ball is lurking. The toe and uprightness is always a problem despite flattening as much as I can with them. The invention of helpful long/utility irons has been a game changer. Bloody love them!
Mark this is the pinnacle of fitting analysis and that is because you put yourself in a situation and reacted to it like in real golf out in the elements. Hence why I no longer go through indoor fittings. Brilliant.
As someone who carried 1iron and every iron all the way up when I played off one many years back, now aged 70 I have 3 hybrids, hit the ball much shorter but the steeper decent angle and the straightness of my Halo hybrids means I can carry onto greens and stop the ball. As you say it is what suits the individual, I wish I'd gone to hybrids a few years earlier. Thanks for the video, excellent.
My natural shot is between a draw & a duck hook. I struggle a lot with hybrids going left, but giving great results, too. Your video is great for helping me to work this out because I better understand.
9:48 thank goodness you explained that shot the iron player hates. I have tested hybrids in playing conditions when messing around with friends’ clubs or rentals and I haven’t enjoyed my time with them. Finally did a demo day fitting with some hybrids because I was interested in getting a 7-wood and 2-iron, so the guy had me hit some hybrids, and he said, “yep: they’re not for you.” 😆 That said, I am 38 and still have some good speed, so we shall see as I get older: what works for the Greggie can work for me!
For me the biggest advantage of the hybrid over a similarly lofted iron is that the hybrid slides through long grass much easier than the irons do. When I need a long second shot out of the rough i go to the hybid.
I've heard that time and again... Never found it to happen with me... long rough: need loft to get out, so maximum 9i. Shortish rough: a 5 or 4i do work just great... And you can be steeper and avoid getting too much grass between face and ball. At least you're someone confirming that what they say is not totally wrong, just wrong for me 🤣
I own both. I’ve had the 2i (Titleist U510, XS shaft) in the bag & the hybrid sitting on my garage for several years now. The 2i is significantly better off the tee. My 5W is what I use off the turf.
It's so interesting how clubs have changed. I carry a 1-iron (taylormade td from 1987) and a hybrid in 18 degrees (cobra baffler from 2004ish) and they have polar opposite flights. I play UK links golf so these differences are really useful. Really interesting ❤
I have a Srixon ZU85 #4 iron, stiff kbs tour shaft and all, and it's so easy to use compared to standard long irons, like comparing apples to oranges. Scottie uses p7TW muscleback irons up to the 5 iron and two of these Srixon utility irons for long irons. Can't say as I blame him either! It seems looking at all the WITB pictures from the Tour most guys play a slightly mixed set of irons, especially in the longer irons. Makes perfect sense really.
As someone who plays for fun a handful of times a year. I have more confidence with the hybrid from my historical experiences. I'm so much more consitent with my 4h than my 5i, I've been thinking about replacing the 5i with a hybrid.
I play Miura blades (MB-101) 4-pw. I've taken the 3 Iron out since it only went 5yrds further than my 4. I have a TSR hybrid that goes further abd lands noticably more steep. I really like my 4 iron for 205 yard shots. I use it often and spend time on it at the range to stay current. Other players don't want to swing it but i think they're missing out on feel
I picked up golf again after near 20 years of not playing, quit when i was on a 1 hcp hitting driver about 220m. Went all in on speed training and the gym at 40yrs old and after 1 year of consistency now I hit driver 270m and golf is waaaaaaay more fun. Im back down to a 3 hcp after 20 years off, distance just makes it easier but its the fun of hitting it farther that is the best return. Hitting bombs is fun!
I used to play 2 hybrids, 21* & 25*, a few years back as a 14 hcp. They were great, I could hit them off the tee as a fairway finder, or off the deck into a long par 4 or 5. I struggled with a right miss, so the hybrids helped. I’m down to an 8 hcp now and the right miss is mostly fixed, and I’ve done away with the hybrids. Too easy to pull way left or they balloon a mile into the air. I tried a SIM2 rescue, and hated it. My set make up is 5 wood, then a 4 iron in the 718 T-MB with a KBS Tour which is a hollow body iron that I can hit well and flows well with my AP2 irons. Tried the U500 4 iron with graphite shaft but didn’t like it. The 5 wood is the best club in my bag. The 4 iron doesn’t see much action but I like having a club I can hit low.
I have the same Cleveland Halo #3 hybrid and it's an awesome club. I am around a 10-11 handicap. Tendency is to miss left, hook. My longest iron is 4 that goes in, depending on course and conditions but can come out for a #5 hybrid or 5 wood
6 iron is my longest and 5,4,3 hybrids and 4 wood. My 6 iron and 5 hybrid are close in distances but I can deliver the ball more precise with the hybrid as usually hit it with a bunch of backspin. However when I want to hit a low stinger I need the 6 iron, the hybrids are launching pretty high. An interesting video again Mark! Thanks!

I have a 21° utility iron (essentially a 4-iron) and a 19° hybrid in my bag and my experience is almost exactly as you’ve described it in this video Mark. The hybrid tends to go straighter and left, and the iron will almost invariably fade right. Granted they are for slightly different distances, but I have found that gripping down on the hybrid and playing an 80% shot gets me almost the same result as using the iron - just more on target. I’m even considering switching the iron for a 21° or 22° hybrid.
Video is excellent. I too am in the middle of this dilemma. Considering replacing my “standard” 5 iron w a utility club w graphite shaft but not sure. I can hit my 5 iron well but I find I’m not getting the distance I used to get I do have 1 hybrid in bag which I love so I dunno. Both clubs can be so versatile.

Great vid. I have up to 6 iron, then 5 & 4 hybrid. I play off 4hc. My thoughts are: 1. Forgiveness is much better with a hybrid, low hit shots still make it most of the distance, 4 irons hit low dive out of the air for me. So distance consistency with off centre hits is big for me. 2. Missing fairways leaving a 4 iron in with deepish grabby rough…i simply cannot get the distance with the iron and not have it come in low with no spin, cannot hold greens, but with hybrid it pops up lovely…which in point 3 is a problem… 3. I miss having a low lofted iron for punch shots under trees round corners etc when in trouble. I seriously struggle to keep a hybrid down, it pops up high im still learning how to punch it effectively. De-lofting a 6 iron for me is risky and i tend to pull this left. So this is the main issue i have with hybrid. 4. As you say in the vid, the ability to control launch, and thus descent angle, really is great. And infeel i can do this with a lot more lies than i could with an iron. 5. Lastly, one more negative for hybrids, for me at least, is i struggle to keep spin down and punch through wind. If playing into 20mph wind, i find it often pops up in the air losing distance. Still working on this, its a skill gap though much like point 3.
Use a 2 iron and love it off the tees. Play a 15 degree utility too during the summer for roll out, pretty useless though in the wet. Have no driver or hybrids but 2 iron to 64 wedge. 16 handicap.
This is interesting. I don’t see the same results with my 3i and 3 hybrid. Both are 19 degrees with ventus blue hybrid shafts. I hit my hybrid 250ish and my 3 iron around 235. I will say my hybrid is much easier to keep online though and like you showed the Utility iron leaks right pretty often. Great video though.
I'm a single figure. I tend to pull a hybrid left more than a long iron. Use it in the rough though when I have a long approach shot but with a super weak grip😅 Other than that I'm using a long iron
I didn’t like hybrids for quite a while but something made me try one again. I realised I could eliminate the pull shots to the left by moving the ball back in my stance and using a more upright swing. Now I can hit them long high and straight. Just ordered a Ping G440 6 hybrid to add to my G430 7h. Love my hybrids now as being in my 70s I don’t have the clubhead speed for long irons.
As i have got older and iron lofts are now stronger, my iron set starts at the 5 iron. 3 & 4 hybrids give me more confidence and higher ball flight. 21 deg 5 iron is great for keeping it low in the wind, which is a constant factor living in Scotland.
I love irons.... literally only have those, driver, and putter in my bag. I hate looking down at a bulky hybrid. Never have an issue with getting ball in the air even with my 2 iron (sim udi)

I love my Sim 2 Hybrid when its 180 plus ill use that my 2 iron or my 3 wood. I can crack a 5iron 180 odd meters but not consistent like the hybrid the wear mark on the middle of the club face is nice.
This is why I have a 6 and 7 hybrid in the bag, I'm more comfortable hitting a green over water out of rough with those clubs than a 5 or 6 iron in the same spot. I can hit my irons just fine down to 4 iron but prefer the confidence on the course of the hybrids.
Very interesting - returning to golf after a long time, with a new set of fitted irons that have a lot of distance added to my game, but very ropey with longer irons and using 5w off the deck for long fairway shots (so considering hybrid). I'm more likely to lose it to the left with the 5w and do not lose irons much to the right at all. One thing I struggle with is how awkward and ugly hybrids are - I know it shouldn't matter, but it just looks wrong at setup!
Found a cunning middle ground, 6 iron, TM 5 GAPR Mid (lots of help but no roll and bulge), then into a 22 hybrid on a flat setting (decent player, do hit down onto it, but like the extra help this setup gives me)

Which is why my 21° hybrid is the least used club in my bag, and my 'tour cavity' 4i one of the clubs I gravitate to the most... I play a natural draw, my miss is a big hook, I hit down on everything (take often a sizeable divot with my 4 wood). I regret my fitter(s) didn't think and look at stuff the way you do, Mark. I would have been better off with a 20° utility iron (with very little offset) than what I have... and don't use. Well, at least I know what to look at next time I upgrade the upper part of my bag (next year maybe... unless I do the wedges first, they're past their prime, too).
Most people don’t generate the club speed to swing a 5i or lower. That’s where the hybrids come in. Get yourself a 4&5 hybrid and a 5 wood. Ditch the 1-5i and the 3wood if you can’t swing 95-105 mph

Funny timing as my mate had just brought a hybrid to replace his 4 iron and we did a test indoors in a sim last night. When struck well pretty much the same results but the drop off on bad shots on the 4 iron were noticeably worse. Also head he felt more confident with the hybrid

I like the hybrid because I can still hit down like an iron . I struggled with the left miss though, so put some lead tape on the toe and vuala, slowed the toe down and hardly ever miss left.

Again this is all to do with the players delivery 👍 That is the feeling most have but that is more to do with how they swing “that” club. Hope that helps.
Good luck keeping the hybrid low under the wind. Tour players need shot shaping options. Us plebs need consistency of strike and distance. We are not the same
Doesn’t a more leftward path change the face angle to hit it center and would kind of cheat the extra height? If you had path that far left with the iron does it not change as much as it thinking? I prefer woods over either to be fair so no skin in this game lol
Recently changed to a 3 ping icrossover. Used to use 4 hybrid. At the moment I'm finding the icrossover much easier to play. Even a mishit seems to go straight but just shorter. Hybrid I'd be prone to get balls left /right /tops /fats /thin etc. 21 handicap with decent swing speed.

I have heard a lot of PGA pros online say they dislike hybrids because they feel that it brings the leftward miss into play. With the ability of modern adjustable hosels, I suspect that might be entering into the territory of old wives tales. I know for my game, I played with utilities for some time and only went to hybrids and woods when I didn't have the swing-speed to gap the irons.
The variant is swing speed. If you perform the test with a swing of 80 mph, you will find the iron distance drops. That’s the benefit to older players or those who have a slower speed for whatever reason. A hybrid gets height and distance while the iron doesn’t.
Sorry I didn’t make that clear. If you swing slower and do the same test with say 23 degree lofts in each the results are the same To be fair they are same with this loft in the video. But slower with this loft will both just launch lower. 👍
...in the first comparison, you were hitting it out of the heel, so strike point needs to be considered when looking at the results. If you were prone to more of a toey strike, it might look very different. In the second, you were hitting it pretty low on the face, which also presumably has an effect...
Am I a weirdo? I use both a 19deg hybrid and 18deg 2iron(same model as scottie), I love them both for different things but if I was forced to choose I ditch the 2i. The 2i's downfall is whenever its a scuddy lie the confidence drops, off the tee/flat fairway i love it though
There is a place for these clubs. The better golfer the less they will notice the difference. I had a 2H and a 2i in last year and off the tee they were identical flights. Off deck, the Hybrid was much easier for MY delivery
5-iron is my longest and have 3 and 4 hybrid. But..... I really only use my 5 iron if I'm into the wind..... otherwise it's not that much longer than my 6-iron. Should probably ditch the 5 and find an alternative.
I have a hybrid and I can never hit the damn thing straight just hooks, I want to be able to use it but I haven’t been able to game it. I’ve now resorted to a 5 wood as I have little to no issues hitting my 3 wood

How do you add the height in your swing? Great video btw 👏
Thanks for sharing
Your swing is looking improved 👍
Thank you. Video on it coming on
Soon
As i have got older and iron lofts are now stronger, my iron set starts at the 5 iron. 3 & 4 hybrids give me more confidence and higher ball flight. 21 deg 5 iron is great for keeping it low in the wind, which is a constant factor living in Scotland.
I love irons.... literally only have those, driver, and putter in my bag. I hate looking down at a bulky hybrid. Never have an issue with getting ball in the air even with my 2 iron (sim udi)
My 3-4 hybrids are my money clubs! Every tee shot is dead straight. Gives me a ton of confidence

I love my Sim 2 Hybrid when its 180 plus ill use that my 2 iron or my 3 wood. I can crack a 5iron 180 odd meters but not consistent like the hybrid the wear mark on the middle of the club face is nice.
"It's the messy human" 👌🏻
Spot on Mark, couldn't be more right. 🤭
I would be very interested what your numbers would be hitting off a low tee like many of us golfers would do to a long par 3 or a short par 4
Found a cunning middle ground, 6 iron, TM 5 GAPR Mid (lots of help but no roll and bulge), then into a 22 hybrid on a flat setting (decent player, do hit down onto it, but like the extra help this setup gives me)

I play with a 3 and 4 iron. And I use them heaps. No hybrids for me. I love a long iron stinger and a punch out from under trees. Golf is fun.
With situations, what about ball above/below your feet and up/down slope? Is there any noticeable differences?
I would like to see a hybrid with a 10 degree loft. that could be a game changer for us mid-handi cappers
Most people don’t generate the club speed to swing a 5i or lower. That’s where the hybrids come in. Get yourself a 4&5 hybrid and a 5 wood. Ditch the 1-5i and the 3wood if you can’t swing 95-105 mph
7 iron is now my longest iron, Driver 4, 5 and 6 hybrids plus 50 54 and 58 wedges

I carry both.
Funny timing as my mate had just brought a hybrid to replace his 4 iron and we did a test indoors in a sim last night. When struck well pretty much the same results but the drop off on bad shots on the 4 iron were noticeably worse. Also head he felt more confident with the hybrid

Just bought a 1992 set of blades with a 3i. The lofts are old school so the 7 is 36° and they are so easy to hit. I can hit the 3 210 and high
I like the hybrid because I can still hit down like an iron . I struggled with the left miss though, so put some lead tape on the toe and vuala, slowed the toe down and hardly ever miss left.

I would suggest that the hybrid would also be easier to hit in the rough or semi rough
Again this is all to do with the players delivery 👍
That is the feeling most have but that is more to do with how they swing “that” club.
Hope that helps.
I carry a Sim UDI 2-iron, and have tried to go to a 2-hybrid, but for some reason I can’t get over the thicker shaft in the hybrid.
7-wood in that situation against the hybrid and U? Is there a Srixon/Cleveland option? Really like these comparisons. Thanks.

Mark. How do I decrease the height (launch angle? / peak height?) of a hybrid into the wind.
I think he uses 2 of those srixon utility irons.
Which one is easier to hit out of the long stuff? I'd guess the hybrid but ... ???
I’m great with my long irons, i suck with hybrids or woods. Not sure why, maybe it’s a confidence thing.
Now if you use a cobra adapt hozzle on all of those you can do anything.
I have heard a lot of PGA pros online say they dislike hybrids because they feel that it brings the leftward miss into play. With the ability of modern adjustable hosels, I suspect that might be entering into the territory of old wives tales. I know for my game, I played with utilities for some time and only went to hybrids and woods when I didn't have the swing-speed to gap the irons.
and that, Mark, is why i use a 4i! bc I lose shots left and the 4i will actually fade
I will try carrying a mini driver, 7 wood, 7 hybrid, 5 iron , 7 iron , 9 iron, gap wedge and 56-58 degree wedge.
Those numbers, is that a median after a bunch of shots or just 1 shot you picked?
The variant is swing speed. If you perform the test with a swing of 80 mph, you will find the iron distance drops.
That’s the benefit to older players or those who have a slower speed for whatever reason. A hybrid gets height and distance while the iron doesn’t.
Sorry I didn’t make that clear.
If you swing slower and do the same test with say
23 degree lofts in each the results are the same
To be fair they are same with this loft in the video. But slower with this loft will both just launch lower.
👍
I recently change to the Jim Venetos set up and swing and the difference has been marked.
...in the first comparison, you were hitting it out of the heel, so strike point needs to be considered when looking at the results. If you were prone to more of a toey strike, it might look very different. In the second, you were hitting it pretty low on the face, which also presumably has an effect...
Strike would defo play a role. In everything.
It all depends on ability/handicap, higher handicaps will prefer the hybrid
wow! never really ever thought of it that way. it comes down to level of skill not the club actually
There is a place for these clubs. The better golfer the less they will notice the difference. I had a 2H and a 2i in last year and off the tee they were identical flights. Off deck, the Hybrid was much easier for MY delivery
3i 230 yards. Narrow dispersion.
Lovely
U irons for me are heavier. Which I like.
5-iron is my longest and have 3 and 4 hybrid. But..... I really only use my 5 iron if I'm into the wind..... otherwise it's not that much longer than my 6-iron. Should probably ditch the 5 and find an alternative.
But, don’t you need greater swing speed to hit a long iron vs a hybrid?
There's nothing easier to hit than the Cobra one length hybrids.
Just picked up a mk2 utility in a nippon pro x flex for 135 pounds - I now see the vt sole on the new one 😢
Its the lack of recoil that older golfers look at hybrids
I have a hybrid and I can never hit the damn thing straight just hooks, I want to be able to use it but I haven’t been able to game it. I’ve now resorted to a 5 wood as I have little to no issues hitting my 3 wood
Fitter told me to take 2inch off my 3&4 iron
“Will that help me hit them?”
“No, so you can fit them in the bin”
Modern day driving irons are the size of shovels.
This is true
Scotty is the king of shaping the ball, and hybrids are much less workable.
I can't for the life of me hit my hybrid, all it does it hook. Might have to invest into a utility iron instead

I find hybrids more stable to swing,,but im a hack
That’s a blanket statement, “you shouldn’t be using long irons” I play a very windy course and play a normal 3;4 iron and a mizuno hi fli 2 iron. Cannot hit a hybrid to save my life and can launch my long irons really high or low if I want.
Defo do you.
@@MarkCrossfieldjust watched towards then end hahahaha, I do hit down and my swing speed is high for an amateur at 112mph for driver 😂 so that explains it
@ yep
Hybrids are hooking machines. I'll stick with long irons thanks.

Ne set , longest iron is a 6 iron. Anything longer doesn't get the height
From what i have seen its all an image thing. People dont play hybrids because it gives the image that ur not good even tho it will most likely help them. Same with iron type and iron covers. Guys play blades or cb when they should be playing gi.
6 iron is my longest iron 😂
I struggle with hybrids. They all go left. Really don't like them.
But if you are not a Pro then you won't see parity which is where whichever works best for you is the way.
I never change my bag to copy that of the pros. I don't play like them or practice every single day like them so I'm not playing clubs like them.
If you play a lot of links, play the iron

Sheffler uses a taylormade iron…. He’s a taylormade player.
Not for this club
