      I agree with the crater. I watch more TH-cam than “TV” so I always have the idea that I am watching something for entertainment. To me it’s like watching a movie or a tv show. Real or fake isn’t as important as long as it isn’t made to look real and it’s all pre staged. Great job both Riza and also great breakdown.

    So I made my first comment half way through. Just finished. I hate it when people self promote their own content on someone else’s channel… BUT… I am also breaking half of TH-cam’s own rules and prove that it can work. Also, I’d have given up or got burnt out a long time ago if I was just chasing the algorithm and not making videos I cared about. Ok. Monologue over. Keep up the great work!

Second, thank you for speaking on the connection of the music and how she delivered her content with montage and then her words and back to montage. Sam, for manifold ADHD and Autism reasons, I have a lot of trouble visualizing the finished product when I'm thinking of a shot. Likewise I have trouble looking at a shot and reverse engineering it. However, I desperately want to shoot more intentionally, and the hours of videos I've watched on rules of cinema, lighting, and everything else are missing something I need.
    You speculating at a process like this and showing, more or less, how it would be done, in addition to saying WHY it's being done that way and what it's accomplishing, is seriously bridging some gaps for me. You've nudged me into storyboarding for the next video. Easy sub. Thank you.

  • @vimalpatra1440
    @vimalpatra1440 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your breakdown was great. Riza's video awesome!
    And yeah the question you asked - I prefer authenticity of the moment and you're right if she'd shoot it handheld or even if selfie style running when she's late. It looks a lot real because the audience knows otherwise that it's all a setup and she's not late. She probably has 2 hrs left to plan the shots and do everything on time and get a shoot done before she goes on to pick someone and the home makeover and cleaning up was also probably done over a couple of days. Nobody gets their cleaning started and films it perfectly and also hopes to finish it in hours. It's a nice cinematic film but feels unauthentic in that sense.

  • @JoshuaKagi
    @JoshuaKagi ปีที่แล้ว

    The production value of the rushed scene, was jarring. Having some sense of the amount of effort it takes to pull off several of those shots and the lack of authenticity to the actual story did pull me out of the moment a bit. I wonder how many non-creators noticed though? It does drive the story well. That said, like the iMac and the notes, Riza is a vibe. Her style is so refreshinging and inspirational. Thanks for this breakdown. You've articulated so much that I love about her work.

  • @JCRoShow
    @JCRoShow ปีที่แล้ว +3

    i love your videos man! and I agree the 3rd act was shot with priority on vibecliche and not as authentic as an actual airport pickup(and we can feel it). to be fair I think it comes with age, a younger version of myself would be just as concerned with propping up narrative / presentation… but now that I’m older any inauthenticity reeks and I can’t not see/feel it. A possible fix for 3rd scene could have been quicker cuts all around so we don’t have time to think about it’s clear she set up her angles… quicker like an old dobrik ending would cut to the chase and deliver same emotion…
    the odd depth and nuance of these thoughts, decisions, and convos is underrated and deeply appreciated
    Thanks for always opening good conversations Sam! 👊🏻

    Huge fan of Riza but as a fellow filmmaker this was HILARIOUS, also because I could totally relate to what you were saying 😂 the amount of effort it takes to create a shot is insane. Respect to you and you’ve got yourself a sub!

  • @Adamrobifilmy
    @Adamrobifilmy ปีที่แล้ว +1

    13:18 totally! I feel like it sells a false narrative and tries to fool me as a viewer, especially since she sells her videos as "vlogs".
    For the creator side it makes me feel bad when I'm actually running late and can't set all of these shots and I end up with shaky handheld footage that doesn't have the same vibe. Not to mention you have to be a good actor to fake stuff like this.
    Also can you imagine picking up a non-yt-friendly person from the airport, tired after a long flight and saying "I know you want to shower and rest but can you wait like an hour for me to film all of this stuff?" Or doing that two hour drive again some other day?
    That being said I love her stuff and loved your breakdown :)

    When I was watching the last seen, I also had the same feeling about authenticity. But on the other hand, it did not bother me because she is obviously having a scenario and so many creative thoughts that you almost watch her videos as you were watching a short film. I find her sincere for wanting to document her life, and while doing that putting all the skills and creativity into it since it is also her passion and profession, which escalates the sense of the moments of her life, ie. you could feel more of the excitement. Love her content and great breakdown.

  • @AdamSettle
    @AdamSettle ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I definitely considered the setup of the shots and how it takes away from the realism when watching her video. But, her channel and expression is a more lighthearted version of life, rather than an accurate depiction of its stresses. It's sort of a Wes Anderson style escapism from actual difficulties that can help make light of life's troubles and see them in a smaller way.

  • @augystudio

    Sam, loved your breakdown! Your video in itself was as exciting as Riza’s 😂 I’m a new fan of Riza and she inspires me to create cinematic vlogs now - which is why I loved your point on the “set up” shots. As a viewer, I get sucked in to the narrative and visuals but when I try or plan to replicate these in my actual life, it makes me go “how the heck can I set up those angles when I’m ACTUALLY rushing!” 😂😂 I’d probably do it your way (handheld) but Riza’s reply also helps remind me that it’s partly filmmaking and those need planning! Thanks for these videos and breaking the rules of TH-cam!

    Great breakdown, yeah, my first thought when seeing your breakdown of her vid, there's no way this was done in a time crunch with that level of production value. Great story telling and aesthetics on her part, but man, if I were trying to get things done, it wouldn't be with multiple angles of storytelling cinematography, lol.
    A bit like bullet journaling, some people actually just run their day, while others design a journal to showcase on pinterest that would never be scalable for the actual task at hand.

    I think you are totally right about the sense of urgency being undermined by the "set-upped" shots. of course it's about style and being engaging, but you shouldn't use style if that goes against what you are telling (i.e. being late) and it's the same if that's tv, cinema, or vlogs: doing the right decision and not just doing the coolest one, should be the filmmaking's way.

I'm a home professional decorator, I really like Riza style and that of the Pethericks - who also break the rules with 30 seconds of no verbal content and I love it, being (more than) slightly autistic I find the fast pace, over the top, bright colours and lots of images in a short time too much and overbearing. Jesus, I've been signed up since 2008 😨) I've commented on maybe 3 videos max, but I just had to here, Sam: Brilliant breakdown, such a joy to hear someone analyse so expertly a topic. But even more, you're so likeable as you speak freely just as you are and you have mirrored (and stirred within) my soul flashes of my own past working in film... and your expert workshop. I'm about to set up my own YT journey (it's a big 'un) and whilst watching your video I had this yearning to have you onboard. One-man band is never easy! :]
    Anyhoops, keep the fire burning, I've subscribed and shall be watching your stuff and possibly sign up to your website. Thank you ever so much🙏
    Sean

    Enjoyed this breakdown - been loving Riza's content so it was nice to see your take on it. Keeping me inspired to make the content I want, not what the spectacle creators want.

    What an awesome video. When watching vlogs, I defiantly buy into the urgency whenever a creator is 'running late', so I enjoyed hearing you talk about that Sam! Great video, and you fore sure have binge-able channel. 👍

    It's because those creators are creating from the left hemisphere, going after hype - Riza creates from here right hemi and even in those first 30 seconds, they told the viewer EXACTLY what to expect from the video and why they should watch. Riza doesn't use words, but she still communicates. That's the name of the game :)

    I have a genuine question.
    If my main niche is graphic design would it be ok to also make filmmaking/ style content?
    Or should they be separated?

    Sam, this was awesome! Everything you said, resonated with us so much. We also LOVE @lifeofriza 's channel for it's vibe, and you did a great job breaking down the shots and making it entertaining. Just found your channel, just subscribed. Can't wait to see more. Cheers.

    great breakdown! i really admire your work, and you laying out her techniques is really interesting! i'm also working on stuff and trying to be less focused on retention and more on good storytelling and cinematography, even though that might diminish the amount of views. thanks for your work sam.
