    Turns out the best way to tell a story that feels authentic is to actually make the experience a little less authentic

      And now you know why candace looks so over it, in the vlog during the daily days.

    • @q4short
      @q4short ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Less authentic but more engaging. I aspire to make videos as engaging, but I'm not willing to go to these lengths. I value being present with the people in my life more than the videos I create to capture those memories

      @paytonsample ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@q4shortthis is why i'm trying to find a balance of making a video authentic while also not keeping it feel too out of place to where it's no longer candid.

    As a videographer, it's great to see someone explaining the effort that goes into what appears to be a simple sequence of shots: "swap places, land drone, back in car, handheld shot....". Another amazing video, thanks Sam!

    I know you talked about case's work put into that sequence but goddamn did you work hard for this video! as a fellow creator, i can tell the amount of work you had to put in to this seemingly simple video. Good job my man

    As a reminder, Casey has been making videos for nearly 30 years now. A lot of those videos are vlogs of his family and daily life. He built these skills naturally over decades by just doing. While studying him is great and this video helps give tons of perspective for new filmmakers, just remember that Casey has had more years of practice than most people watching this video are old, myself included.

    Dang this is so good... I have done almost exclusively more music tutorial type content and am shifting towards more storytelling around how im creating and releasing 50+ songs this year - and making it into a weekly series, and I've wrestled with how much should I do "naturally" vs how much should I work to truly communicate a story thru medium of FILM MAKING.
    And I realized after doing three episodes so far more "raw" - that the truth is more like... audiences want the story. And the story is often not really truly FELT through just the single angle, single cam, single thing ... it's almost necessary to create the illusion to properly tell that story in a way that audiences feel. Really cool, and it's gotten my mind racing on how to do this myself better.
    Watched a few of your videos - looks like you're gonna be crushing it in a short time. Keep it up.

    What a great breakdown. Its not easy to tell a story, but knowing the shots you have to break down, and then shooting them all, will most certainly make the experience feel inauthentic, and that you are just an actor playing a part. But the end result is astounding.

    I just shared this with my wife, thanks for making it. It is so hard to make movies with your SO and though I don’t do half what Casey did for this one sequence, I have experienced the difference between living in the moment and sharing the moment with others. And he did this every day…

    At 5:37 he starts with focus on the distant buildings, asks the question, and then snaps to tight focus on her eye. Here on TH-cam I would have considered that an amateur mistake, but when focus snaps in it punctuates her response. There are layers to his videos, hidden behind the scenes, that I never even considered.

    2 Important takeaways...
    1) Get plenty of B-Roll but only if it helps move the story forward - or just shoot a lot of stuff and decide later.
    2) Don't worry about a few technical mistakes (most people will never see it) like the driver switch, as long as the story is served.
    It's all about the story.
