The Spin (Duplicates) tool in Edit Mode would be very handy for this, especially for positioning all the separate meshes perfectly symmetrically. Just make sure to place the origin in the centre of the object (and to toggle Use Duplicates).
With the buttons, couldn't you have set the point you wanted and then snap the selected vertices to that point for each of them? I never tried it myself that way deliberately, but there are a few times I did this over the years without knowing what that action was doing. Just a thought.
