Trying "soft baits" for spring tautog (blackfish) underwater footage

  • There's quite a strong theory out there that blackfish prefer soft baits like clam, shrimp, and sandworms in spring because their lips are soft from wintering over. Been wanting to try this for quite some time, and unfortunately, with all the wind and rain we've had this April, the water really never stayed clear enough to get good underwater footage. Apologies in advance, the water clarity is still not good and I'm just getting used to a slightly modified underwater camera setup, but I did manage a few shots of some blackfish (tog) meandering around in this structure. Water temps are above 50F so they should be ready to eat, right?

    Interesting. I wonder if they are being that selective because there is no competition from Porgies, Seabass , sea robins and all the other small fish that we see around blackfish structure in the fall. I remember way back when I first started fishing and used a lot of sand worms in the spring for bass, a lot of black fish would come up as by catch. I’m surprised they didn’t want the worms

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could be. This is a work in progress, I def want to keep trying more experiments like this in other areas and at different tides. I know people who catch blackfish on sand worms all the time in spring so I was surprised a bit as well, but I also didn’t give it too much of an attempt, maybe for like 30-45min I had the sand worm on. Also the ones I dug up were prob smaller than what you’d buy at the store. Much more experimenting to come when I get the time!

      @@PeterRanieriII Here in RI, the boat I go on runs their special Nighttime Adventure trip from late June through August. Starting out going for fluke and seabass until sunset, then switching over to squid. They used to do nighttime striper trips, but with all the new regulations (the 28-35 inch slot limit, and requiring circle hooks if using bait. They even slashed the bluefish limit from 15 to only 5), they instead just do squid all summer.

    I don’t believe that saying that the black fish don’t eat green crabs in the spring time because they have sensitive teeth or something I’ve seen people catching them with green crabs in the spring time

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      I also don't believe that they won't eat crabs because their teeth are sensitive in spring. They are just seemingly a bit pickier in spring, but I must admit that last year I had a day where I only caught one or two blackfish on clam and not any on green crab.

      I’m actually using my old GoPro hero 7 in a dive housing case attached with a fishing line mount. I’ve since modified the mount a little and replaced the lens to try some darker scenarios so we’ll see how it goes. I’m still learning how to use it, haven’t been in the sound yet which is where I think it will help the most. One thing I’ve noticed is one side of the read out is brighter than the other, have to research why that’s happening
