I've never had a g-shock watch. My girlfriend gifted me this exact model. I totally love it. I work in construction and it's taken a lot of bumps and stuff. The bars really have protected my watch. It still looks like new after I clean it. Update, 4 yrs and my g-shock is still working strong. Have not had to replace battery yet. The bars are a little scratched up but that’s what they’re there for.

This particular model was designed for skateboarders who, let's face it, take alot of falls/spills.....hence the bull bars 😄

Scratched up bull bars are a badge of honor on a rugged watch!

Had to look up the email from when I bought it because the battery died and I wanted to look up the model number. Turns out I bought mine exactly 5 years ago today!

This is exactly the kind of comment I was looking for. I'm constantly working on vehicles, splitting hauling wood, stuffing my arms in tight spots and was looking for a watch that could handle the beating.

currently owning the gshock gd-400, been through swimming, airlift, paintball, blacksmithing (on wrist and few scratches on the metal guard)
still running 100% looks and operates just like it was from the box. the watch lasted me 3 1/2 years on straight battery (auto light mode on) and 4 years on second battery change (auto light mode off) the watch to this day is still my number one go to and would highly recommend for anyone who's worried about there watches breaking I can guarantee this watch will deliver even after its shot by a paint ball gun and airsoft gun.
draw backs is the thickness is beefy on the wrist but that's cause of the guard and the great build
drawback is also the ur trying to keep warm u will need to get used to the fact that the watch will feel a bit uncomfortable on the long sleeves.
I take this rock climbing and its been the best watch I can recommend for anyone with an adventure like life.
this watch can really take a punch so its a real good watch for the price.
I've owned this watch for 4 years as it was a gift from my dad who wore it for 3 years.

I've had my GD-400 since 2017 and it gets the most wrist time in my collection. No issues, not even a batter replacement. And I just noticed I watched your review on its 4 year anniversary 1/4/22 nice

Thanks J., yet another great review! I actually had a MTG900 model, which is Atomic & solar, but most importantly at the time, stainless case and bracelet. One turn off was a plastic/resin case and/or strap. But, you have actually given me cause to revisit G-shocks and look at this GD400-1. Like you, I really appreciate the look of that metal cage across it.

great video "j" brings smile to my face seeing the enthusiasm you bring.
g-shocks are great watches..I'm never without one on my wrist when I'm enjoying the great outdoors. .but sadly seems my vision has taken a Lil hit. so I find myself wearing analog versions such as gulf master more and more..even with their large size.they are so light. you hardly notice.
like we have said so many times about seikos having something for everyone. same can be said for casio IMHO. .and for those looking for high end pieces..those mr-g versions go all the way up towards $3000.00 plus
in closing..love the enthusiasm. .hope you never lose it.
    warmest always,
    jc

Great video. The thing that struck me as interesting about it taking you so long to get one is that you've mentioned in many videos that you travel quite a bit for work - this has to be the ultimate travel watch. When I watched this I thought about TGV constantly talking about these as travel watches, and it struck me that, athough he's obviously a hardcore G-Shock lover, and talks about the travel applications all the time, you probably fly within the USA a lot more often than he does between his three home countries. So I'm sure you'll get a lot of use out of it and it will grow on you even more.

    • @JANTHONYCHANNEL
      @JANTHONYCHANNEL  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, that is a great point. This would be a great travel day watch, it would look a bit out of place with a suit during a meeting but I could totally take it on the plane with me!

Nice review on a very tasteful G-shock. I think G-shocks look like samurai armour and I think Halo armour looks like a G-shock. They are not the most elegant things ever made but G-shock's "tactical aesthetic" has been influencing design for almost 40 years.

Hey, a review of a watch I actually own! I got my Baby-G (solar, atomic) in the 90's for my job, and it's still going strong. The original rubber watch band has even stayed like-new, and that's despite some serious abuse (dirt bike racing). Thanks for letting me know what some of those functions buttons are for finally, lol!
BTW, the lighting in your intro and outro B&W segments are now top notch. Good use of fill lighting. Looks absolutely spot-on.

Holy crap, this watch is a GMT, annual or maybe even perpetual calendar, sounds with chimes/ sonnerie, chronograph, depth rated dive watch, shock proof, world timer, minute repeater, split seconds, alarm function putting this watch on the same level of Patek 5175, Lange & Sohne Grand Master Chime, or a Audemar Piguet 26574. It would be a tough choice between the Casio, Patek, Lange, or AP..

I think this is a great watch to take with you when going on holidays. The last time I went on a road trip I took my Rado D-Star and while this is a terrific watch it isn't exactly utilitarian. The G-Shock would fulfill these needs much better, but then I would opt for the GW-9400 as this watch is more complete (and I'm a sucker for completely useless features ;-) ).

*_Can’t recall if it’s covered in the vid or not but the Alarm settings are versatile. Apart from opting to have them on or off, you can select each alarm to operate everyday or just one day. In Alarm Mode, you select 1 of the 5 alarms. Press A or Adjust once. You’ll see “ALM 1-on” on the lcd panel. This is the one time alarm for one day. If you desire that alarm to resound everyday, press A/Adjust again. “ALM on “ appears on the display. This is a peculiar alarm feature in the GD400, & also the GD100 & G8900 models, which have the selfsame module._*
*_You like what you like but you’d be better off with one of Casios many Tough Solar & Wave Ceptor models for an “end of the world/survival” watch. Your battery will endure for over a decade if kept adequately charged & you have the Radiowave reception feature which sets your timepiece automatically upon receipt of the radio signal from atomic clocks around the globe. Something to think about 💭🤔._*

*_Another feature of this model and also in the GD120, G8900, & in the GD100 - which all have the same module & features as the GD400 - is four world city modes available to be selected for Home Time Mode. This has nothing to do with World Time Mode which is a distinct & separate mode. In Home Time Mode, press D or Forward. You’ll then see “(a city abbreviated) JRS T-2” along with that world city time. You have four world city Home Time Mode selections. You can set any/all of them for any city setting that you will. To set/alter that city setting hold & press A or Adjust & select your city with the B (Reverse) & D (Forward) buttons. Shoot, if you want make all the cities the same so there’ll be no variation in time. But I like variety so all my city settings are diverse. Casio is the world’s best timepiece maker 😏‼️_*

I used to like Casio watches and synthesizers. They made excellent synthesizers in between 1985-1988 with unique synthesis methods such as SD (Spectral Dynamic) and iPD (interactive Phase Distrortion). Then they had to exit synthesizer market because Casio had reputation as a home/toy keyboard manufacturer. But I really like their synthesizers, and watches were also excellent, until they went G-Shock. :) I mean, the early G-Shock models were quite alright, but the bulbous ones are quite an atrocity to watch design aesthetics. :)

I just bought a G-shock a week ago too. Slightly used but in top condition, the one that's got analog hands, solar and radio-controlled. Got it for £41 shipped. I feel about it pretty much exactly the same way you do, it's got those rugged stylings and I know it will be reliable... probably forever, at least until they switch off the radio updaters!
Question: I've never seen you mention Rado in any of your videos where you talk about brands and stuff, any thoughts on them?

    Very nice video.
A few things sounded a bit off to my ear, not nitpicking, just to let you know if you like to have some better "terms" for these:
Powered by quartz battery: Quartz movement powered by battery (lithium), still easy to get what you were saying, I would also easily say something like this on video when I get my brain twisted.
Metal cage: Often called bullbars (or bull bars, bull-bars).
Atomic time keeping models are listening to a few terrestrial transmitters, GPS models are listening to the satellites.
I think you can also preview the alarm sound by long pressing the button that cycles through the different alarms (start/stop/forward) when in alarm set mode.
Also on your strap wearing out concerns, you can get OEM straps as spare parts to most Casio models, also cheaper off-brand straps.
What do do you think about the GD-400-9 model as in Master-Chiefy-look?

Pentti Hilkuri wow a few things that sounded a bit off to my ear . 1-who are you to correct anyone? Why do you feel the need to come on someone’s video and point out their mistakes? Your pretty presumptuous in thinking anyone care about what your correcting! And no nobody is going to appreciate your obnoxious need for people to soak up all your “wisdom “ and you basically sound like a pompous ass! Now feel free to correct me I’m sure you won’t be able to resist responding to correct my punctuation or spelling lol

It's a good watch but I wish I could find a cloth band for it. It was sold as 'new' but originally they came with cloth bands.
Also the daylight savings doesn't work and I have to reset it myself so I turned off the feature. And lastly the day of the month is always a day off so I started setting it everyday to the correct date but other than that it seems very tough and I'm hard on watches.

Great hair cut! Don't own a G Shock and I can't see me doing so. Simply wouldn't suit me or my image of myself. I see them at even small jewelllers in the local shops so I know that they're popular and must be selling well. Glad that you like yours. I've zero problem with it being made in China. Most stuff is these days. Even the Swiss are getting a big percentage of their Watch parts from China and casting their watches as Swiss Made. This is a big dispute presently. H Moser and Cie have highlighted this shady practice, amongst others. That the G Shock is plastic/resin would worry me, though it does make the Watch light on the wrist and the pocket. A very fair review. Maybe some German made/marketed watch reviews would be worthwhile next?. Just an idea....Over to you. Thanks.

Indeed, I only have a Nomos up on the channel. I'd love to review a Glashutte or Lange at some point but I don't plan to pick one up personally for a while. I'll see what I can come across. No promises. As for the china thing, indeed it is another shady secret of the Swiss watch world.

Great choice for a G-Shock! I find the visual indicator bars useful in the countdown timer or stopwatch modes when I am timing something for 10 seconds, especially when the numbers are more difficult to read with the negative LCD display. Outside of that, it is mostly decorative and just cool to look at.

If you ever feel like getting into some -- dare I say it -- higher-end G-shocks, look at something like the Mudmasters. You may be surprised at how much you appreciate the superb quality of a mere Casio. Or if you can't bring yourself to spend that much on one, the Rangeman is the coolest digital G-Shock out there. Master Chief would certainly approve of both.
