Success is different depending on the person. People try to measure things in money but it means so little for some and it means the world for others. If they are unhappy then they didnt get what they needed to succeed, they got what they got told they needed
I was never rich. However, if I do get rich and I like it, I will do my best to stay that way. However, if after I feel I'm not happier that way, I can easily get back to being poor. All I want then is the choice.
I like leaving my comfort zone from time to time. This has led me to the best things I did in life. E.g. I always liked watching modern/contemporary dance and always wished I had stated it when I was a child. One day I was 35 and a professional software engineer. But I never danced. So I just got of and signed in to a dance school. Now it's my biggest hobby and I can't get enough of it. I am even thinking about becoming a professional dancer - which to my surprise is still possible in my age.

40 years ago, I thought life would be easy if I ever made 100K. That didn't take long, but life didn't get any easier. Per Parkinson's law, expenses rise to meet income. You will quickly discover that the government will simply take more of your income. Then you have kids, and you want to send them to private school, and all of a sudden you are broke again.

My definition of success is to align my actions with my values and success then = happiness.
