    hey is there a way to scale down or scale up your character once its all rigged without precomposing it? I initially had it double the size of my comp so that i could scale it down and not lose its quality but didnt know how to. precomposing it i would have to go back and forth between compositions for all the movements to match up. any suggestions?

    • @night_xero8066
      @night_xero8066 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just link them to null and scale the null then delete the null when you done

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, you can parent everything to a null, but then you have to go back and reparent everything back up to the other body parts. I'll be honest, I will usually pre-comp. jumping back and forth isn't that much of a pain for me, especially if I use the mini flowchart.

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Amir,
      Yeah, it is possible if you know how to duplicate my technique of creating the limbs in illustrator, but do it in photoshop. You might need to create some marker layers that are place directly in the center of the circles so you know where to place everything perfectly in after effects, then once everything is rigged up in After Effects, you can go back into photoshop and delete those markers and the file should update in After Effects. Hope this helps!

      If you want a sleeve that extends past the elbow, then just design the bicep to be fully sleeved, and then the forearm you can just bring the sleeve from the elbow down to wherever you want it. No need to create a separate set of layers for a separate rig.

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is so that After Effects can detect the center of the circles we made for the joints of the limbs, so that when we rig everything up, the joints are lined up and don't break.

    When you group the sleeve to the upper arm, how do you remove the line that shows back up at the elbow? Is it a layer order thing?

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes I think when you group things, it will close any paths that are open. So you may just have to use the scissor tool again to cut that line out. That's assuming I am understanding what you're describing correctly.

    _Still it is unclear, how to control direction of the Hand. Its dangling downwards like it was dead_

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No no, the video doesn't start at 5:36. That's just where we start setting everything up in After Effects. This tutorial is not only about how to rig the character, it is also about how to design a character with shape layers to help you in the rigging process. AKA the first 5 minutes of the tutorial. It's important to NOT skip that part.
      The rotation of the hand is dealt with by rotating the controller layer of the limb. OR if you want the hand to rotation with the forearm automatically, you can disable the expression on the hand layer rotation property.

    • @LightspeedTutorials
      @LightspeedTutorials 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheKeyframeAcademy Sure thing. I've spend some time in AE over the years and consider rigging somewhat advanced technique, which makes first 5minutes inadequately basic. I think most already know how to prep AI for import.

    • @LightspeedTutorials
      @LightspeedTutorials 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok fair enough, title says How to design, not How to Rig FAST, so I guess that includes the *.ai part.

    • @LightspeedTutorials
      @LightspeedTutorials 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Upon import, make sure none of your AI Layers has a Bleding mode on (like Multiply)

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LightspeedTutorials I disagree. I think a lot of people jump into character rigging without consideration of how to actually design their characters for easy set up in DUIK. The workflow I've outlined here, if followed, is the most streamlined way to create character limbs that don't break so that you can avoid frustration further down the line. On the contrary, I believe that it is adequately basic because the designing process for characters isn't all that complicated.
      Also I think that the reception to this tutorial is evidence enough that a fair amount of people tend to agree with me.

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the advantage is being able to place that anchor points directly in the center of your joints, which is why I create the joints using circles. If you leave these as AI files, AE can't snap to the center of these circles.

    • @maxmagnus777

    Why turning everything to shape layer? Is that easier to work for computers?

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it's not for performance, its so that you when you go to place the anchor point, (pivot point) it snaps to the center of the circle that we used to create the limb. Converting it to AE shape layers makes it so AE knows there is a circle there. It's important to be able to snap the anchor point to the center of the circle so that when you rotate your joints the stay aligned. Which is what this entire video is about.

    I think a really useful video would be like a 'best practices' for designing your characters in order for the DUIK experience to be as smooth as possible. For example, I've just done a project where a client wanted me to animate their mascot, but it was sent in sort of a running pose, which made the walk cycle a nightmare to get looking good. Now admittedly that's almost certainly because I'm not goot enough yet at animation or DUIK to know how to quickly isolate and correct errors, and I'm sure there are far more efficient ways than what I've been doing, but I'm enjoying learning even though I'm a total newbie to animation.

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy

      Some character rigging tools have a feature called 'auto rotate' and will do what you're talking about. In the case of Duik, it doesn't have an auto rotate feature. So you have to rotate the hand manually.

  • @MangoslicePapaya

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes is is an option. You just have to make sure your joints are lined up on the circles like I've shown here. However, I do not think that AE will be able to snap to the center of the circles on the joints like it can with a shape layer. Which means you'll have to eyeball it.
