While you could hear references to your AI products as an AI project that is being worked on, in this 365 Data Science Tutorial we will explain why product management and project management are not the same. The skill used in project management are some of the same skills you will need in product management. They have overlapping skills, but different responsibilities. Here is how they differ:
Project Managers have a clearly defined project timeline and budget. They know the goal and the constraints of what they are working on and there is an end to the project that they manage. The projects are a one-time endeavor.
Some of their responsibilities include resource scheduling and risk management. This means that the project manager’s role is tactical, and they are responsible for the implementation of the pro project
Product managers on the other hand do not have predefined goals. Their effort of improving a product is not a onetime thing, Instead their work comprises of several projects that work together in achieving their goal. Some of their responsibilities include:
Gathering requirements from user feedback
Identifying problems and opportunities
Prioritizing initiatives
Building a roadmap
Creating a vision
In other words, the role of a product manager is strategic and they are accountable for the decision of pursuing a project or strategic direction.
