If you want to become a data scientist and create a project that will get you hired in the field, then you need to start thinking like a data scientist. Which is what we are going to show you in this 365 Data Science Tutorial video. You will have to adopt a unique mindset that requires you to think like a scientist, think like a data engineer and think like a businessman.
Why do you need to think like a scientist? Well, you are going to be using advanced analytics, investigating motivations, looking for patterns and trying to understand the why of it, all in a systematic manner. Scientists use critical thinking to discover knowledge using the scientific method. So just like a scientist, you will start by researching and investigating the problem, finding out what has already been done, and speaking with stakeholders to see what they know. You have to hypothesize and come up with possible solutions. You are going to test the hypothesis using statistical methodology, and you are going to measure the results. Most importantly you have to keep an open mind and question everything!
Why do you need to think like an engineer? Because you have to write code, build systems, deploy models and automate things. You need to engineer systems that are reproducible, testable, extensible, portable, robust, reliable and efficient. You need to build systems that solve problems, so avoid copying and pasting your work.
And finally, why do you need to think like a business person? Businesses are about making and saving money. As a data scientist you play an essential role in those activities. You need to demonstrate business acumen that you can clearly identify real world problems and real-world solutions. You need to understand how to develop, quantify, measure and track KPIs. The ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear and simple manner to different levels of management is also an essential skill.
