🙏 Love finding americans that find Akala. I can only suggest reading his books.
Not simply a rapper, lectures on culture around the world. Rums a business helping kids stay out of trouble.
So under rated. So glad people are still finding him.
Kano is worth a listen as well. More people know hom for being Sully in the Top Boy tv series, less know him for his bars.
Both Kano & Akala should be in every rap fans cd collection.
Have to mention Wreth 32, Ghetts, Dave (Santan Dave) and Stormzy as well.
A little older grime but Dizzee Rascal isnt to bad. Possibly The Streets and Plan B as well for something a little different.
    All in my album collection.
Looking forward to more of your posts 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🙏

He's british and in our system we grew up learning british history from a british perspective. Like any country does. But he was also given a different perspective by his family from a young age which helped him. This guy is so smart. Thinks for himself, doesnt buy into ideas. Sees the world as it is. Knows that racism exists but never thought of himself as lesser than because of color. He aspired to be the best he could be and achieved it. This guys an inspiration.

Akala and his sister, Lady Dynamite are products of Pan African Saturday schools that were a by product of the trends of English School system to segregate and side line Black Afro Caribbean children as troubled, intellectually delinquent and trouble makers into separate delinquent schools. Pan African schooling was geared to counter act this by supplementing the teaching not given in these schools, plus teach pupils more about their history and history of the diaspora. Akala is ahead of his time but this was underpinned by the the Pan African education he gained. Akala's English mother was also a graduate in Caribbean History and it was her aim that her children didn't just understand their history in a tonal way but they had a defined viewpoint and perspective of their history.

When I was a kid and in what you'd call 7th grade, my brother introduced me to Akala, I idolized him and became a huge fan. School for me was pretty rough, I went to a lot of high schools because I was bullied pretty harshly, it got to me and I brought that pain home. I was fighting with my family a lot and I was a really depressed 13 year old kid.
My brother worked as a gig promoter and he had a connection with Akala so he told him about my situation and a few days later I got a message from him on Facebook. The message was quite a few paragraphs of pure hope and encouragement. It honestly changed my life. Nothing up to that point in my life had made me stop and think about who I wanted to be, but after that moment I knew.
