    I'm from the UK, I know Akala as a Political commentator of sorts, a poet, author, and general heavyweight intellectual. I didn't know he was a rapper either, despite him seemingly identifying as that first. Didn't doubt for a minute he'd be stellar at it, seems to be at whatever he turns his hand to, and even if he wasn't I knew I was about to learn something. It breaks my heart the clowns we end up with in Government when people like him walk amongst us.

    I’ve always listened to this (as a Black Brit) and assumed naturally that he was talking to a predominately white British audience - and that would make sense. Talking to them like a friend who is educating you on a topic that you aren’t particularly strong on, through no fault of your own as you haven’t been taught or exposed to it. Which is why the “white working class” lyrics really hit home with me because it closed that gap on “how different” we are, and that we are the same and we should both fight inequality.

    • @32446
      @32446 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I guess as he’s mixed race that maybe he’s talking to all as he has experiences of both sides???

    • @killtheZOG
      @killtheZOG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep. Black and White people in the UK live exactly the same and have the exact same struggles when your poor. Race doesn’t actually exist it’s just a concept that the media and social media especially promote to keep us divided and going against each other instead of going against the rich. All a distraction.

    Been lucky enough to meet Akala after one of his gigs and got to ask him a few questions, one of which was if he had any advice on writing a book and his answer was “Be consistent and work every day toward what it is you want to achieve”. He stayed after that gig for ages just talking and hanging out with his fans. Really decent, humble guy who is obviously blessed in many creative aspects but mostly as an inspirational human.
    Love your reactions and I look forward to the rest of his FITBs. Also check out his albums. He has a very eclectic style. Thieves Banquet is a very good album.

    Well you figured that out anyway. I guess I should've waited a bit before commenting. :P As far as recommendations all his fire in the booth's are good... there is Parts 2, 3, & 4 [though be aware that on #2 & #4 there are 2 parts where he raps with a small period of time of him & Charlie talking a bit to each other so don't skip those 2nd parts in those 2 videos.] For actual songs you can always check out "Maangamizi" [I think this guy did a good job with putting visuals with the song th-cam.com/video/RaaEtS-Wi0I/w-d-xo.html ] There is "Murder Runs the Globe" ; "Find No Enemy" ; "Malcolm Said It" ; & "The Thieves Banquet".
    Really any of these are good to see.

    I've commented on a few of your videos now and they are all so eloquent and informed. Akala is a fellow Brit like me however I'm a white man in the North of England so I cannot ever pretend to understand his plight as a mixed race man in this county. We're a similar age but that's it. You have added a lot of education to this performance, I've since looked up Tulsa massacre and been horrified at what I found. Keep up the amazing work my friend. Love from the UK

      @@donny7574 that's not necessarily true. Mixed race people now have the battle of knowing where they belong. Akala said at the age of 6 he realised his mum became his white mum due to the social construct. I don't think you as a white man had to realise that. At no point did I say I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS TO BE MIXED RACE. In fact, I admit I have no idea because I have 2 black parents so how would I understand that. One can only listen. But beg you, please read carefully before responding. I was paraphrasing what Akala had literally written in his book. His words not my own assumption. Words coming from a mixed race man.

    • @IFonlY236
      @IFonlY236 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaeld5454 A quote from Akala himself from his book - Natives, Race and Class in the Ruins of the Empire...
      From that day, my relationship with my mother was not just that of mother and son, but of a white mother to a black son. Race had intervened and now marked our actions and attitudes, coloured our conversations and heightened the usual conflicts, mapping on to them the loss and suffering of the black world at the hands of “whitey” - and the strange mix of guilt, fear and superiority that a great many white people feel as a result, but rarely talk about. It did not matter that my mother’s family was poor by British standards, that they had their own history of horrendous institutional abuse, or even that she was half Scottish: race overrode those nuances.
      I can genuinely say I don´t know what that feeling must have felt like. Nor your white friends, nor your black friends...
      To think that we are all the same is naive as fuck because it makes it hard to actually express how you feel in a safe space without being attacked because and i quote from you
      "don't talk like you know... I am mixed race and face the same problems as my white and black brothers"
      and...
      "we all in the same place with similar struggles. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't lived it"
      I have never had this struggle...I guess I´ve never lived...

    Akala, Mic Righteous and Lowkey, My top 3 from the UK. They all did songs together too. They were, or still are part of a movement called the Peoples Army. Logic(the UK one) is also part of it, and I mentioned in an earlier comment that he mentioned Kool Herc and other Hip Hop pioneers both from the US and UK in his FITB pt1. Akala has two Ted Talks, And also spoke at Oxford University, just like Lowkey, who is also an activist. The book you were talking about is written by him. In one of his Ted Talks his topic is Hip Hop and Shakespeare. Very interesting! Peace from the Netherlands! Edit: You know it's him, lol...I'm writing this while I'm watching. Last edit: You can do his fire in the booths in order(he has 4 so far) and after that some songs. really enjoyed your reaction and yes the UK has a lot of great rappers.

    I am a 51 year old white Brit. I have been watching Akala for years, he speaks nothing but facts. In the UK, the working class are all the same, predominantly living in the same areas, especially within the big cities. My friends are from virtually every race and creed, we are more integrated compared to the US, however we still have racism within this country giving every person of colour, extra challenges in life. In the rural areas racism is much more pronounced. Hopefully in the future “The truth will out” and history will be the defining measure of education.

      But won’t fight with a guy, suit and a tie
      Who sends your kids to die in a war
      They don’t send the kids of the rich or politicians
      It’s your kids, the poor British
      That they send to go die in a foreign land
      For these wars you don’t understand
      Yeah they say that you’re British
      And that lovely patriotism they feed ya'

    Like a huge amount of English words, "Picnic" comes from an old French word. In this case "Pique-nique", a gathering with food. There are no racial connotations to the word whatsoever.
    As for more Akala stuff: The other 3 FITB videos, his F64 videos, his songs Maangamizi, Murder Runs The Globe, Find No Enemy.
    Despite what many will try to claim Akala is not a professor, nor does he teach at Oxford University (Or any university for that matter), he once gave a presentation at Oxford University, as many other celebrities do. Akala is great but he does do a bit of selective editing of history to better fit his narrative, which can push a lot of people away who have a wider understanding of certain times and events. It's a shame because when he is on point, he is really on point. Another amazing conscious rapper is half-British, half-Iraqi Lowkey, he has a couple of FITBs and some fantastic tracks you might want to delve into.

      Just to let you know, homophones and wordplay weren’t just invented in the modern era. Just because a word has a definition, doesn’t preclude it from being used within a different, winking context. Similar to how “cracker” could mean 3 different things, “whip cracker” field overseer/slave driver, “oat cracker” an empoverished person who cracked their own oats to eat, or a person from Florida/GA. Likely, it was used as all three simultaneously.

    • @BunniMonster
      @BunniMonster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kyleleehufnagel
      Absolutely but that simply isn't the case here. The claim that picnic has a racial connotation is less than 25 years old, it was never used as anything other than a gathering to eat food, ever. It's simply one of those cases where somebody has taken a word and completely fabricated a false history for it.
      If you really want a food word that does have a history of racial connotations, the burning alive of black folk used to be called a Barbecue.

    • @alexisdonaldson3430
      @alexisdonaldson3430 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BunniMonster the confusion seems to have come about because many lynchings if blacks took place at what you would describe as a picnic, as a casual showpiece/ entertainment for the families enjoying their food / afternoon.. So the racial association with the event is there although I agree, that is not what the word means or where it originated.

    About the "picnic" part: You seemed to miss the fact (or chose not to mention) that there were actual picnics held around lynchings, where townsfolk would bring their family to a lynching and have a meal around the hanging corpse...sometimes taking souvenirs such as toes or fingers. These lynchings weren't private, "never spoken of" events. Sometimes they were simply public celebrations of murder.
    This was happening in the lifetimes of our elders. We're not talking ancient history here

    The word 'picnic' did get twisted into a 'pun' by the people organising lynchings - but the word itself pre-existed the lynchings - it was originally a french term for outdoor dining, which was then anglicized to the form we know now and meant sitting outside for a meal. The term used in lynchings was a 'play' on that original word. I have seen a few claims online that it is the origin of the word, but this was retrospectively applied.

    The English/British Empire perfected divide and rule, perpetrated it all over the world and continue
    Last week old Etonians used a group of commissioners, highly educated Britons of colour, to publish a racial disparity report downplaying institutional and structural racism and 'found' that social mobility is more nuanced that B vs W (dur!) and not all black people 'fail' equally (nice bit victim blaming and West Indian vs African competition and division - ooo look first gen Nigerians go to Uni, whereas black Britons 'from' Jamaica tend not to get into good colleges, so it can't be racism, coz if you're the right kind of.......!) The report includes ideas like slavery ‘not just about profit and suffering’ so stop whining about it and tell a “new story” about “the Caribbean experience”.
    Who do you imagine is in the firing line for this whitewash?
    PM Boris Johnson for using racist tropes throughout his career?
    The education system for not teaching about Empire?
    The Royal Family supporting Nazis, concerns about family members' melanin, Phillip's "memorable one-liners”, Wills dressing up as Zulu and Harry as the SS?
    The police, given the MacPherson report demo-ed Met cops were institutionally racist 20 years ago?
    The health system where black and brown people were disproportionately dispensable in pandemic.
    No the people getting heat for the report being published are the people of colour who wrote it (you can imagine what they're being called) and the people of colour (and allies) who have been working to counteract structural inequalities, now being portrayed as liars/chip on shoulder/over eggers.
    Hey, the English/British state are very goooooood at the divide and rule and distraction game so we must build solidarity and laugh in the face of the gaslighting. Soz for long stream of consciousness rant!

    The big difference in the UK with regard to race, is that there is no real segregation in terms of where people live. Like you won't find all black areas. It's much more about sort of class. If you're poor you grow up living around other poor people of every race.
    So in that respect the actual people aren't racist at all. At least not those of my generation (I'm 37) or younger. Obviously you still get it but it's much less of an issue between the people.
    That said, there is still a lot of the same issues regarding policing and stuff that you get in US, only way smaller scale. Its much more subtle too.

    I'm a Scouse working class (uk working class isn't the same as us working class, it'd be the same as your middle class,) queer woman who is white (but white ethnic as I'm half romani. But I appear to be fully white british)
    I get annoyed as shit when oppressed peoples don't recognise that those with their own oppressed group may have other oppression that coexist. I'm working class, queer and a woman. There's 3. If I then had a racial oppression added to that that would of course add an extra layer of difficulty. Why why why is that hard for some to get or acknowledge?

      Indoctrination is why.
      All countries build their citizens into their own model, and this is the uks(amongst many others).
      As a white straight male I'm equally as frustrated by the general census of how ignorant and aggressive most people are to anything different.
      I have to remind myself that this is the work of the powers that be and the programming (of society), and not the average person. I no longer get annoyed at people, I try to inform, and still remain mad at the structure that makes this be. The system isnt broken, it is a monitored and purposeful creation.
