Note: We missed highlighting is that the Leitz uses Qualcomm's largest fingerprint sonic sensor so you can get access to your phone more accessible, and the camera app we used is the Leitz Looks mode that produces great Bokeh powered by Qualcomm's AI engine, which is still in beta.

The reason why Japanese phone makers don't market in the US is because they want to directly retail a single model number to consumers, who then go and get any cell service they want to ... Selling on the US market means you have to sign contracts with the service providers, who each want an exclusive model number and feature set that makes it exclusive to their service, & then they lease the phones out as part of the service contract. The result of marketing in the US is that you have a higher production cost from having to produce like 10 different versions of the same phone after you get done adding up 3 major & 2 minor providers, plus each phone having 2 to 3 sizes of internal memory, and then after that you will get a lower profit margin due to bulk contracts being negotiated at a lower cost per unit ... It is easier and more cost effective for companies like sharp and sony to tell the US carriers to pound sand & stick to producing a single phone model that has got a dual sim slot & can natively run on any network (outside of the US), which they then market themselves without a middle man cutting into the profit margin.

      @timathypotato8034 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@holdenhodgdon3756 that's not necessarily correct anymore (about the US carrier skus), for instance you can get an unlocked phone straight from samsung that will work on most of the major US carriers, so theoretically a phone maker could release just one sku, though they usually don't cause its more profitable to have specific carrier versions to sell in stores.

Those Dmr scopes were made like tanks and were the gold standard the labs I worked in back then...A lot of the Leica microscopes designs started as Wild heerbrug scopes that Leica fully took over in 89 ... It's almost like Sony phones, I think. Yes the pictures aren't as "bright" as the iPhone and Pixel, but the colors, contrast, and dynamic range feel a lot more natural, which I prefer. Looking at the pictures side-by-side-by-side made me think the other flagships done too much HDR. Though that said, for quick snaps for social media and whatnot, they're pretty much the best at doing so.
Funny to think that RED was boasting about their phone and turned out to be a pile of garbage, OnePlus slapped Hasselblad name for nothing but marketing, and then Leica out of nowhere borrowing a Sharp's phone and made a phone for their fans with great performing camera.

What about RAWs? So, both the Pixel and iPhone give a lot more color information than the LEICA does. Also, both have a large sensor too, it's not like they got puny sensors. From what I can tell, the Leica is behind. To underexpose an image, yet still clip highlights, that's just not it for me. Whatever look I'm going for, I like either good auto mode, or do it myself. Leica so far, based solely on these sample pics, fails in both cases in my opinion. It gives you less room to tinker with the image since non-existent detail, well, does not exist with the Leica.

And, despite your name, you don't seem to know how RAW data works lol. if a RAW looks clipped, 99,9% of the time you're still able to bring in the information contained in those areas. None of these images presented were RAW, thus the "more color data" you experience for iPhone and Pixel, since they take several exposures and merge them to one image in addition to tons of post processing like sharpening and raising contrast.
The flatter an image looks, the more "color data" it contains, but to a standard phone user they look bad because you still have to create the look you're going for in post, but gives you waaaay more possibilities in doing do.

Something I really miss with newer phones is that they don't capture what I see anymore. The output photo is what it thinks I want, but what I want is to capture the memory of a moment. This is especially true with over saturated colours and modified lighting and white balance, like what we saw in the photo of the blue car. If I want a ideal looking photo, I can edit it later.

They all use a specified portion of a predetermined surface area. Based in the historic standardised equivalents they are based on. They are derivative technical terms. So it should be called a 1 inch sensor as it is by technical specification classified as one. Hope this helps clarify it a little better.

Same as APS-C has its size derived from the Kodak APS film standard, so when the first APS-C cameras first arrived, the sensors were actually smaller than the film equivalent they were derived from, hence full frame sensors are called so, as they cover the full 35 mm film frame. And everything above is a "lie" since no sensor in any camera actually captures the full lens circle. And the rabbit hole goes even deeper.

I think what Brandon is trying to describe here is the _legendary_ Leica Pop®!
I have a handful of Leica cameras and they all have the pop. They’re also remarkably consistent performers. I’ve done countless comparisons with them against Canon 7D and Sony a7 MkII cameras & lens and no other camera provides that incredibly hard-to-describe Leica Pop. I’ve even printed large format prints of untouched photos on my Canon PIXMA PRO-100 that were taken with all 3 cameras and most “civilians” prefer the Leica photos.
This phone looks incredible! It’s definitely a Leica phone, unlike the Huawei phones that Leica’s been providing cameras for over the past few years. The bare aluminum, rounded body and of course, an aluminum lens cover very similar to those for the Leica DLUX series of cameras. I’m SOOO pleased that Leica chose top tier hardware & features for their very first Leica-branded smartphone. It might seem pricey by today’s standards, but it looks like a typical, ultra high quality Leica product.
Sincere congratulations, Leica! Leica fanboys like me will likely purchase one just to have the first Leica smartphone. It doesn’t look like it will too painful with all the features this phone offers.

Smartphones do that with automode. Professionals do it manually ;) When doing manually, you got more options. But iPhone RAW is very amazing too. Lots of options there to work with. Also, in some situations a smartphone can not be used. So you NEED a big camera. Like with zoom, portrait pictures but from a slight distance. Many shots like that, can NOT be made with a smartphone. But close-ups, smartphone is perfect. Most can't tell the difference between smartphone and DSLR ;)

The pixel and the iPhone does take great details of the snow and the leaves, but then the Leica shows how you would see the snow and leaves in real life, with the bokeh and everything. NO it's most likely not. Sharp is often really talking bullshit about their specs. I remember seeing stuff live on IFA like a 1280x720p 7" screen and they claim it's 326ppi which is just in fact wrong.
This display most likely will never be able to reach 2000 nits - at least on actual usable level. Just like many Android phones which can only reach their max brightness on a super tiny spot at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if those 2000 nits only work on literally like one pixel at a time.
And btw basically ALL OLED displays are "AMOLED". AM stands for active matrix which just is a thing on all OLED screens.

The same is to be said by pairing these phones with a 3rd party filming app(like Filmic or Protake), where shooting in a flat color profile will yield video quality that just CANNOT be seen on any other smartphone right now.

It's hard to tell if I would think differently not looking through a youtube video, but to me the Leica really seems to have some issues with fringing as it transitions from focus to blur. To me that focus fall-off is really not great looking, and it makes the image looks much less sharp than it is. it gives the impression of there being motion blur on still objects. I don't mind the less processed image but it really felt like there was a loss of detail in comparison. I wish we could see unprocessed iphone/pixel images, and im sure raw stills out of the Leica are better, but it feels to me like a lot of the post proccessing I would end up doing on the leica photos would be to bring them to looking more like the iphone, and fighting that softness. I do think google has really messed up withthe pixel this year tho, that shadow lifting looks terrible.

As a semi pro photographer I strongly disagree. What you mistakenly call "motion blur" is simply a very shallow depth of field and is a much more natural and realistic looking image. Overly sharpened, overly processed image quality is why I and many others very much dislike cell phones for photography. I do agree it may appear a bit softer but sharpness really isn't everything in photography.

When I compare the 3 photos with pixel, iphone and the leica. The leica one feels natural and the right focus makes it fell like what your eyes see. While the pixel and iphone feel like it brute forces the photos with post processing and sometimes changes how you see the images.

Something that would help me as a viewer with no photo experience would be for you to take one of the Lecia photos, and manually edit it to something closer to the iphone/pixel versions. Like the lighting or color intensity.

One of the most stunning smartphones I've ever seen. Should be worth selling outside of Japan one would think?

Getting an iPhone and a Fuji film camera both for less than what that phone costs will give you better everything. Definitely a niche product

It seems that the Leica is showing the unsharpened raw image with more image elements. If you take RAW on iPhone and then open it in something like Halide you can get rid of the computational sharpening that’s automatically applied. That’s a fairer comparison I think.
