- The world of cameras is a lot like the world of wristwatches: even if you don’t “get it,” you can’t deny the allure of a well-made piece of hardware, with those precision details and mechanical textures so often missing from the smartphone world.
So when camera legend Leica designed a new carapace for one of the most curious cameraphones of 2021, I knew I wanted to take it for a spin - even if, at its core, it’s just a rebadged Sharp Aquos R6 … and even if took until almost 2022 for me to get a hold of one. This phone looks like the love child of a Nokia 1020 and something from the Galaxy Note lineup, and that's a really good thing. Just wish it actually- ya know, worked better 😅

Between this and the Surface Duo 2 at-launch, any phone that gets shipped with touch response issues should be laughed out off the industry. It's an absolute clown move.

I believe some early adopters of the iPhone 13 series had touch response issues sporadically, including me. After some updates it has been much improved

I think you might be the only reviewer to still include call quality on a smartphone. It's appreciated 👍
True, and it shame really that this feature is getting more neglected. Sure they may not do voice calls, but I'm pretty sure majority still does this, at least outside their bubble. In my work, we do calls alot of times.
When was the last time a new phone had bad call quality? Maybe its just that nearly all phones have good quality so people dont even test🤔
@@kaukon I get what you're asking but that's precisely the problem. We're getting less and less info about what voice calls are actually like because smartphones are (getting) just so capable, and we're left in the dark.

I just don't understand how so many of these companies half arse this great concepts for devices. Especially considering how much it must cost to even get anything into production and sold.

Yet another great video Michael some of the black and white photos taken were great but just think of what the hardware would be like if it was on a pixel with the added computational software on top of the processing from the camera itself

Thank you for this review! As a Leica user, I'm lusting over this device, needed to know how it worked here in the US. I'm torn buying one, it'll one up all my Leica club members! But I'm also practical, as I read all who reminisce over their Nokia phones, I feel in 3 yrs an expensive paperweight. I know electronics are expendable, but with Leica, hmmm I still shoot with a 1953 Leica! Wonder if there will be system updates, as I heard nothing about that. Thanks again!!🥂

Holy dang! I can't believe I didn't find this channel sooner. I watched videos of yours YEARS back, I don't think i've ever seen what you actually looked like before. I love this new (new to me, maybe it's been years) format where you are on camera mixed with scripted scenes with B roll... Man this is next level stuff, Just look at all this editing! Sheesh! Plus the great voice and i've always loved the content/opinions.. Insta-Sub!

The touch response is totally okay with my set. Not sure if your device has the problem or it was something to do with software which is now sorted out of my device.
The last phone I imported from Japan was a Sharp Aquos SH-01G back in 2014, and while the phone itself was great and ran well (no touch issues lol), there was one major annoyance with the camera, where you cannot turn off the shutter sound and it's also loud as hell!! (I think it's a Japanese law) Something to consider for anyone looking to import one of these!

I was wondering if you managed to update the phone with the SoftBank SIM you ordered?? I have managed to get on of these phones for £400 GBP. I've got the APN settings in and it's working sweet. No touch screen issues, but I have it for its looks tbf. I can only get a SoftBank data only SIM from eBay. Hoping I can use that to update it!

Huge omission not having a dedicated shutter button with a half-press, like the Sony. Heck. For ¼ of this price, you can still buy the LG V60, with a great manual mode, awesome video, a 32-bit Hi-Fi QuadDAC, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 2-year warranty.
3 days? Give me 15 minutes.

Had the same touch issue with motorola edge 20, also confirmed by other users, seems like a problem with very high touch panel refresh rate not implemented properly into the software
such a bummer to hear. I really hope they get another shot at making this device. it's so close to perfection if they can nail it right.

as mentioned the lens cap could have had a swivel mount, which could have had a landing zone on the wireless charging coil to hold it in place when in use.
They could've at least put a spare cap in the box for free

The new OneUI 4.0 update on my Galaxy S10 is having very similar navigation issues, yet my ancient LG V30 with a custom A12 ROM has no issues whatsoever. I wonder what causes it.

I came into this thinking Yes I found my next phone, and then you said it was lacking in the one thing its supposed to be designed for. I hope there's a sequel that fixes the issues.
What I would love to see out of one of these reviews of the camera specialty phones, is how do these photos from a camera specialty phone perform in Lightroom editing for professional circumstances, versus something’s shot out of an iPhone. Would I buy this to take a picture on the fly, and go home and edit it? In a way that allows a lot more freedom than an iPhone or Google phone shot? I feel like that’s the real question.
That pretty much requires shooting in RAW, which many phones can do. More pertinently, it also requires an expertise and interest in photo editing that I just don't possess. You might want to check out Steve Litchfield's content for that kind of thing.

So much promise... I think if Leica had been a bit more 'ballsy' in terms of working on / improving on all the short falls and spent a little more on R&D, etc. then it could possibly have turned into a classic / iconic mobile camera device in the sense that it would be camera foremost, communication device second. That and actually marketing it in other countries would help as well. If I had the spare cash, I would have really considered importing one! Thanks for a great review as always.

Throw on some headphones and give it another listen. Very low recording level, very high noise floor. Most flagship Android phones are far better at audio in camcorder mode.
