I know what this feels like. My daddy left when I was 4 years old. We flew a kite together and then he left. I didn't see him again until I was almost in high school. By then, I had a "stepfather" who came into my life and showed me what it was like to be cared for. He was the only man aside from my PawPaw that was in my life and never left, until he had to in 2016. Mama went to be with him last year, almost 6 years to the exact date in the same month. I am blessed.
My daughter was 6 yrs old & my son was 10 yrs old when their father left us for another woman and her children. He had the nerve to tell my son that he was happy with his new family. After that, we've been the Three Musketeers forever ❤️💙💜 My daughter heard this song a few years later and it pretty much defines how she feels about her Dad leaving. I cried more for their pain than I did for myself. It hurt my heart to see them so heartbroken.
Yes. I’ve been there too. It’s a truly heartbreaking experience no kid should ever have to deal with. Far too many parents choose themselves over their precious children’s hearts. It’s breaking our society.
I'm surprised she even got passed the first verse....how can anyone sing those lyrics and not break...Everyone in the world, who knows Kelly C. knows what her dad is to her...what must that feel like...
I know I couldn’t sing those lyrics. I would be a complete wreck by the word “airport”. I have 3 children who experienced this with their bio dad and ended up raised by my wounded warrior husband and myself and never saw their dad again even though we tried, and even flew across from NC to CA to bring them to a visit. He never showed….. this performance happened right after that family trip where I watch my kids lose hope in their father

Absolutely awesome. Gotta respect Kelly for that raw emotion, let alone that voice, the piano player for his spot on reading of her needs, and Keith for not hiding his reactions.
My dad committed suicide when I was just 7. Today at 31, it still haunts me. I never had a man who restored my faith. Thank you, Kelly. You never know how much this song and this performance meant to me.
I am so very sorry you had to have that kind of experience in your life, I hope you have been able to have a full and fulfilling life with lots of love.
I'm so sorry to read that your dad committed suicide when you were 7. I'm sure many people have told you: what he did; he did to himself. It has nothing to do with you. I hope when ever any doubts float in, you remember that YOU were innocent. and YOU are separate and different to your father. YOU can get help and make different choices.
One thing everyone should note here is her level of professionalism. Every time she missed a note she started right back where she left off instead of skipping lyrics and staying with the tune. The piano player also should get huge props for his performance here.. This reminds me of a story I heard about a wedding DJ who found out his mom died as the wedding ceremony was starting. He continued to do his job, even announcing the couples grand entrance, until a backup DJ arrived. Kelly showed her true colors here, that she's not only a good voice with an emotional sway, but she's a top-notch professional live performer.
Keith is a very very emotional man and so is Simon. I have NO idea why Simon is viewed that way. he is a tell it how it is man, but will absolutely shed a tear with everyone else. and well Keith is very connected to music and will tear up when due. his emotion with Arlo Sims audition is so touching.

As a 47 year old father of 4 kid's and 4 grandkids, I could not imagine walking away from them. When I saw this, it brought me to tears. You can see the emotion, and know this is true in her life. This was such a beautiful performance from Kelly. I felt for her
This song really hit home with me. I am 62 now and last saw my father when I was 6yrs old. I watched him leave out of a window, not knowing that I would never see him again.

So brave of Kelly to be able to sing this song. It’s gets me every time I watch and Keith is crying. I love this version of this song. To all those broken families xxx
Such a powerful song..most artists tear up singing this…I’m only an amateur, but sang it for my uncle Steve as he lay dying from lymphoma, never sick a day in his life, had a sore shoulder, went to the doctor, he was given 3 weeks, he lasted only 10 days, and was only a very youthful 63 (I was 49 at the time)…I was a puddle, but somehow got through it…did it again, by his request, at his funeral…oh my god, the entire congregation started sobbing uncontrollably only half way through the song, I couldn’t finish it, so we played a pre-recorded version I sang in the studio, 2 days before his funeral, because I knew I wouldn’t get through it (he was also my godfather, I loved him dearly, it broke me in half when he died so suddenly). I knew I’d have a hard time doing it again, especially at his funeral as I stood beside his body laying in an open coffin, I didn’t expect everyone there, including the priest, and all the staff, to sob a gut wrenching cry of pure sorrow and agony. I wanted to leave the song out, I knew it would evoke strong emotions, but never dreamed it would be that bad. But, it’s what he asked for, and I wasn’t going to let him down…but it was just too painful, I had to literally run away, and just bawl my eyes out in my car, I didn’t want everyone to see me fall apart, and disrupt his funeral…it was all about him, my emotions were besides the point. When I finally composed myself after about 10 minutes, I re-entered the chapel, only to find the entire congregation still sobbing, but we got through it, and honoured him the best we could, Rest In Peace uncle Steve, I miss you more then words could ever say xoxoxoxoxoxo 😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰
For whatever it may mean to you, even through that incredible sadness…I can’t help but think what an incredible man he must have been to invoke so much emotion. I wish I’d known him for who he was, and frankly, to have been a part of such an amazing and emotional memorial. You honor him greatly with your story.
Thank you for sharing your story. I read every word! Thank you for letting us know how amazing Steve was and that he is still I'm this world, even if it's in your heart and sharing memories of him ❤
Songs can evoke so many powerful emotions in people. Artists who are up on a stage performing can get lost in them just like Kelly did here. Lyrics can break you open in very unexpected ways...that's what music does. Music is not just a melody or a lyric, it's life.
I never met my biological father. I had a stepfather for a while. He was awful. Put some scars on me that will never heal. But after all of that, I'm still grateful because my grandfather stepped in more than a normal grandfather would in his role and because of that I got to know him better than any of the other grandchildren. He was a very special, unbelievably loving man. I will never forget how his hand felt on my shoulder when he'd tell me "It's gonna be ok hun" in rough times. I felt it in 2010, the night I found out he had passed away from cancer. I've never been so distressed in my life. I miss him so much. What breaks my heart even more is that he never got to meet his great-grandson, whom I named after him and was born in 2016. They would have been so perfect together. My son talks about my grandpa as if he knows him though. We talk about him often, so to him it's like he's still here. And I guess he is. He never left. Best man I could have ever hoped to have in my life.
My brother fell in love and married a beautiful widow who had three little girls. Later, they had a son together. My brother raised those girls like they were his own. They called him "Dad" and loved him very much. Covid took him because he worked in a hospital. At that time, there was still no vaccine available. They still miss him so much, and this song touched my heart on so many levels because it reminded me of them. Yes, there are true heroes out there and they should be recognized more often.
Talk about emotional, I am crying. You can literally feel the pain that this song held, but it held faith and knowledge that though the biological father left, the new father never would. The child grew and through the love of the non-biological father learned what love really was and the kids come first. Great song.
Kelly you should never apologize for your performance singing that song. I cried I felt your pain. Like you and so many others . My dad left when I was 3 . But I remembered him and I carried a little girl's pain all my life. Then at 19 years old. I got a call from a stranger saying he wanted to see me. Long story short. I went to his dying bedside. He lived two more years. I reached out to him through calls and letters. Not one time did he pick up the phone and call me or ever write to me. So here I am 71 years old and still crying those little girls tears. As I stood by the fence as he walked away. Love the song.💔 ( Still broke )
Hats off to the piano player for perfectly adjusting to her pauses while she was emotional.
She apologizes for the tears but doesn't realize how much more powerful they make this performance

He adopted his new wives boys. At 13 my mom remarried an amazing man that I call Dad. Now in my 40’s, I’ve been married 26 years and have given my kids a Dad unlike mine could ever be to me and us. I love my Dad I’ve had 30 years and my husband. These are the real men. ❤ To all the great Dads and Stepfathers.
My younger siblings were kidnapped by their dad in 1987...taken to Canada, just found them in 2013.
@@wolfangel8332 Wow, I’m so glad you guys finally found them but sorry of the time and the fact that it happened. I pray that you are all getting time and healing. What happened to the parent that took them?
@@shesgoneforeverlife nothing, US attorney would not pursue him since he ran to Canada, and he passed away in February 2013 which is what prompted my sister to make contact.
So weird… it’s like you just wrote about MY life… 💜
My daughter were taken from me in the 80’s by their daddy. They were gone for 11 months. They still suffer to this day because of his actions

Keith Urban - powerful reaction. What a man!
keith as a great dad.. cried.
When she sings about real feelings she takes my breath away. Kelly is so gifted!! Thank-you! Kelly you are a gift to us all.
Kelly is not only beyond incredibly talented, she is such a strong woman, so very down to Earth, hilarious, and someone I truly admire and look up. Kelly! You are your generation's example of what today's woman is. You are the bomb!! Love you much!! ❤
She sings from experience and hurt. So talented. My heart breaks for her sad memories. I hit the lottery with my Dad! He thought I hung the moon. He’s been gone 4 years now and I miss him so much every day.
You were very blessed. I lost my brother 6 years ago and I still miss him.
I thought my dad hung the moon. Thanx forsharing🥰

I realize how Blessed I am I had two wonderful, educated, Loving parents. Many of my friends are more beautiful, athletic, artistic, or whatever-- but I've found their childhoods were wide awake nightmares! So, it's ok not to be the most beautiful , or the BEST writer in the publishing I do. Daddy loved my poems, and before he went to Heaven? One of my poems was published in The Journal Of American Medicine! --I just wanted dad to Enjoy it, and he was Thrilled, as a physician...I never got huge awards for my poems, and essays, but got published in quality places, and Dad go his own private copy of the JAMA issue-Thanks to the editors! Great parents and a loving childhood are worth more than gold....oxxx
Such an amazing performance. The unsong hero in this is the pianist, he was realyl in touch with her response and managed to complement her. Keith...wow...He's worked in the shoes of the man she's singing about.
Stephen York omg, you’re so right
Absolutely agreed about the pianist. Had no idea about Keith, makes it even more sweet. :)
What do u mean Keith's worked in the shoes of the man she's singing about? I thought she was singing about her father who abandoned her as a young girl . Just asking if u don't mind ??
True but no one can sing like her
@@margaretmitchell4926 I think he meant she is actually singing about her biological father and her step father, how her biological father deserted her but her stepfather picked her back up, that's what I'm reading into it
I cry every time I see this! Kelly is amazing and the pianist is so, so good!
That piano man was perfect. He did such a great job supporting her.
Kelly is like having a conversation to her audience.... 😥😢
Thus song is for all the little girls, whose fathers left them behind....IT MATTERS💗Sometimes, no matter how much a Mother tries to fill that void, it is never enough! Thank you, Kelly for all you do for us🤗😘🎶
YES!!!!!
Well that's kind of a direct insult to all the mothers who choose to stay after the fathers choose to leave. Mothers ARE enough.
Not just the little girls, all kids.
@@coleridgequeen Didn't mean to leave out boys, sometimes when it's personal, you lose your focus...my Daughter went through this with her Father, so I was thinking about her.💗💙
@@angerkitten9931 The OP did not insult mothers. She clearly understands the hole that her husband created in her daughter when he left her behind. She is expressing empathy for her daughter and gratitude toward Kelly. Why you gotta pick a fight?
I have helped to raise 7 boys over the last 40+ years- none of them my biological children. Doesn’t matter, never did. I love them all and will be part of their lives ALWAYS. 🙏🏼❤️
They were all blessed to have you and I mean that sincerely. My dad raised 5 of us and never had a biological child but it didn’t matter or was even thought of he was our dad and we love and respect him even though he’s been gone since 1996. My mom too who married him when I was 9 after my first mom died when I was 8. I treasure them both and at 71 appreciate both of them more and more as I get older. I know your 7 boys will too and cherish you always. Many blessings to you all.💖🙏🏻💙💖💙
I watch this performance periodically always thinking nah im not gonna cry this time.. and ofcourse always end up bawling 😭
Yeah sometimes you just have to watch and feel again and again. 🤗❤️
Same..lol!
Rewatching this breaks my heart even more knowing she divorced her husband and her kids are dealing with the pain of a broken home. Especially her ex who treated her so badly during the divorce. She didn’t deserve that heart break from her ex. She’s an amazingly strong woman!

most emotional and raw performance I've ever seen. It never fails to bring my to tears. 💔😩😪
Amazing Mom, an amazing singer, hard worker and a beautiful woman, Kelly is a great storyteller.
Wow everyone is crying 😢 very powerful emotional song superbly done Kelly.
Massive hugs and lots of love
My brother did this too. So I feel it. I was very young too. ❤️❤️
I am so very sorry you had to have that kind of experience in your life, I hope you have been able to have a full and fulfilling life with lots of love.
I'm so so sorry...that pain is unreal
I'm so sorry to read that your dad committed suicide when you were 7.
I'm sure many people have told you: what he did; he did to himself. It has nothing to do with you.
I hope when ever any doubts float in, you remember that YOU were innocent.
and
YOU are separate and different to your father.
YOU can get help and make different choices.
🙏🏾 praying for your continued healing
I really loved Kelly. She has a golden talent. No auto tune no make up. Just her God gifts voice❤

Their are two people who are hard to cry, Simon and Keith if you can make them cry ur doing a damn good job
Not true about Keith, he’s always been pretty emotional. You can tell that from his music and in interviews.

You honor him greatly with your story.
so sorry for your loss
Thank you for sharing your story. I read every word!
Thank you for letting us know how amazing Steve was and that he is still I'm this world, even if it's in your heart and sharing memories of him ❤

Songs can evoke so many powerful emotions in people. Artists who are up on a stage performing can get lost in them just like Kelly did here. Lyrics can break you open in very unexpected ways...that's what music does. Music is not just a melody or a lyric, it's life.

One of the most powerful performances ever!

No matter how many times I watch this I always cry.
