I was thinking of making a DIY on that very issue of dulled yellow headlights. The acrylic lens oxidises in the sun. Very easy to rejuvenate. Buy a sheet each of wet & dry sandpaper grit size 800, 1000, 1200, 1500 & 2000 and some plastic polish. Use a bucket of water with some detergent in it and start with the 800 grit and sand the yellow layer off back to fresh plastic. Use the detergent water liberally. You only need a few minutes with each size until the final sand with the very fine 2000 grit. Then polish with the plastic polish and you'll have lenses like new. If you use the plastic polish periodically they'll stay nice and clear as the polish has UV screen included usually. If your lenses are really bad you may need to start with 600 grit. kind regards, Scott
Hi Scott, thank you so much for your great work in this video. I live in UK and not capable enough to open the headlight of my Viano and then after installation of conversion kit to reseal it. I really dislike my old halogen headlights and want to change with the ones in your video. Could you please suggest me the best course of action? Thank you
Just replace the bulbs with the latest LED items. You'll need load resistors to or you'll get the blown globe warning on your dash. Alternatively buy new after market headlights.
Thanks Andrew. Here's where I bought mine. Delivery was only a week and the quality seems good. www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bixenon-2-5-Mini-Bi-Xenon-HID-Projector-Kit-Lens-Car-Hi-Lo-Headlights-Shroud-/151298502080?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item233a17edc0
Hi mate. Awesome video. Have always thought about doing this but have seen kits for $200 plus. Wasn't too sure on the eBay universals. Do you have a link to them?
Very well done! Just curious if you get any wobbling of the projector units because of the (relatively) heavy lens and rubber washers? Also, apologies if I missed it in the video, what colour temperature are the HID bulbs you are using, and was it the best choice? Thanks, excellent series of videos for the W639!
Thanks Mark. 6000k is what I've used. 5000k is also good apparently. My research said to use between 5000k and 6000k. At idle there's a slight amount of wobble or vibration ... other than that they're perfect.
Hi there. Did you changed the old bulb from the dash , at the heater control , with LED ?! Because looks much brighter. If yes , what type of LED did you put ? Thank you !
Hello, special thanks to you from Turkey. I'm glad to learn the way how the headlights could be opened. I couldn't find the lenses on the shipping sites, could you please share the link with us if possible? Also, do I need a technician for the cable connections?
Hi Sergun, As for a technician it depends how good you are with making the electrical connections. It's very simple as I try to show in the video. I wasn't going to pay for a "technician" for very simple connections. Hi Scott i was hoping you may be able to help me, i have the same vito as you. I hit a big pothole the other night and when i stopped the van it would not restart till it cooled down. reading online people are saying crank angle sensor or cam angle sensor. my question is do you know if our vitos have cam angle sensors or just crank angle sensors, and if they have both any thoughts on which to try first? also do our vitos use OBD2 diagnostics? would you recommend i try get a cheap scan tool? Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide me. Regards Dave
David the 646.982 engine in our 115CDI's has both a cam angle and crank angle sensor. I don't know which one is likely to fail from hitting a bump. Yes the Mercedes do use OBD2 diagnostics but some of their codes are unique. The cheapest way is to download a free OBD app for your phone and purchase a Bluetooth OBD2 dongle. They're cheap on eBay. Those sensors are very simple Hall effect. This video shows you how to test them. th-cam.com/video/itMXO56z1tw/w-d-xo.html
Thank you Scott it was the cam angle sensor, when i removed the injector cover to acces it i found 3 of the injectors were incased in a coal looking sybstance, no, 3 injector has had a leaking seal and has covered everything in crap even the cam angle.sensor had to be dug out with a screwdriver. new sensor and 1 hours of claening, new injector seal and all is good again! How long did you leave the lamps in your 'oven' ? I just can't get my lenses off... Left them 30min by 70 degrees celsius ?
The lens are hard to get off because they appear to use a rubber silicone seal. Did you watch the video? 15 minutes in my hot air oven.
How hot is your oven ? I tried after 30min, but no way ! I bought new lights for the conversion and I don't want do break anything off.
