    These people were some of the most down to earth people that ever came out of Hollywood. Their TV show really did represent the values that most American families emulated and aspired to. Too bad people don’t have positive TV shows like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet to watch these days we just might have a more positive and decent society in our country today.

    Thanks for posting! So sad that 32 years later, the entire Nelson family has passed on. Oh, what memories watching this show in the 1960's and hearing Rick sing a song at the end of the show in the later years which made the girls scream. I had the pleasure of seeing Rick in concert in San Jose. CA. at the county fair in 1981 and it was a very enjoyable show, esp. when he sang his many hits. Thank God we have the dvds and memories of the Nelson's wonderful show to forever cherish!

      I sing and play guitar. I am 75. I did not understand the roots of Ricky’s music at the time. I didn’t really know about rockabilly. I knew the songs but I had not stitched them together into a genre concept. It seems so obvious now. Ain’t that the way.

      @@robertlee8042 Thanks for your interesting comments. Ricky's music sure did evolve over the many years leading up to his country music in later years. His rock and roll music and love songs were always my favorites by him. Sad that he left this life so soon and so suddenly. I hope you caught the wonderful PBS special about him years ago featuring so many, especially his sons. It was quite well done and might even be on TH-cam. Rock on from New Mexico!

    How the times have changed! I used to teach my middle school students about pop music & culture from the 50’s to the present day. Here’s how I introduced them to the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet: I’d say, “I’m thinking of a TV show about a real life family, and the dad’s name is Ozzie...” They’d all call out, “The Osborne’s!” Then I’d say no, show them the cover of the video box The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, and play for them Ricky’s first singing appearance on the show (4/10/57) when he sang Fat’s Domino’s “I’m Walkin’.” I told them Ricky was the first true “video star” in that he became famous because of his appearances on TV. But my favorite clip from that episode was at the end when all four of the Nelsons sang a song together in harmony. That surely must have been one of Ozzie’s proudest moments! Thanks for posting the interview!

And then lo and behold Rick mentions being in Oklahoma the night before! Rick appearance at the fair that year was unfortunately the very last time I saw Rick in concert. Thanks a bunch, Cathy... this one means a lot to me.

    I have often thought when so many kids having abusive or drunk parents, watching shows like Ozzie & Harriet, or Leave it to Beaver, or Family Ties, or Different Strokes, etc.--must see what an ideal family looks like.

    • @ValleyoftheRogue
      @ValleyoftheRogue 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They had their own problems, especially surrounding Rick. That was the thing: They really were like many families in this country, not "idealized" at all. The 1950s weren't like this at all-women continued in the labor force despite social pressure to remain at home, and all of the "mothers" on these shows were career women, after all. The actors who played Robert Young's kids in "Father Knows Best" were all from single-parent homes and thought of Young like a father. Nothing is ever what you think it was when it came to the 1950s. It wasn't a good era at all for women and racial minorities.

    • @StevenTorrey
      @StevenTorrey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ValleyoftheRogue All tht you say is true, but the television sit-com glosses over reality and presents an "Ideal" family that many kids must envy.

He came to San Jose in the late 1950's or early 1960's and I would have loved to see him then but I was too young. The 1981 show was ok but the dusty fairgrounds was NOT the place to see him perform. The show started about 45 minutes late and the stage was a platform on the speedway for races. Still, though, I can say that I saw Rick perform live and I really miss all the Nelsons!

    Check out the "Remembering Ricky" retrospective on TH-cam, which contains a lot of very interesting information. With all due respect to the memory of Pres. & Mrs. Eisenhower, for many of us The Nelsons were America's real First Family.
    Also, as a 73 y.o. looking back, the 50's were an ideal time in the history of America in the 20th century. To be sure it wasn't perfect, and some people can find something wrong with ANYTHING if they try hard enough, but I remember it as a time when everyone seemed to get along pretty well. It was an entirely different world from the America that we are living through at present.

    Maybe better than any others, the Nelsons were popular being more plain than extreme. That they made the enjoyment of each other in everyday ways with an undercurrent of mutual love sadly bores people now. Ozzie made a successful living of showing his family as built around solving problems in their kitchen. See the calm joy and peace of Harriet at the center, and how this is passed on to the boys and the audience even here. Reality TV that warms the heart? & so Catholic.

    I loved the Ozzie and Harriet Show as a kid. Ricky was my favorite singer in the 60's. He was so dreamy! I'm sorry that his marriage didn't appear to be a good one, but hopefully he found happiness before his death 😢💔

      David wasn't that great looking when he was young but got better looking as he got older as in this interview. Ditto for Rick, who was rather homely as a kid. Who would have thought he would have turned out drop-dead gorgeous in adulthood? He gave Elvis Presley, in Presley's prime, a run for his money in the looks department.

    Must have been awkward for David, from being the older brother that the girls liked to being overshadowed by his younger brother and referred to as Ricky Nelsons brother.
    He still had the wealth and fame, they were born into money and showbusiness, but his role became that of supporting his brother who was becoming the star attraction of the show and also a highly successful pop singer
    Imagine people wanting to know you because of who your kid brother is and asking non stop questions about Ricky all the time
