nice to see Rick so comfortable in this interview with Mike Douglas. He was my first crush as a young girl. Loved his music and his singing. Gone way too soon.
What a great interview, Rick was truly a gentleman with amazing talent and still very humble, much like his dad. The Nelson's have three generations of talented folks, Rick's twins, Gunner and Matthew have made a good name for themselves.
I loved The Mike Douglas Show! He was such a sweet man and a great entertainer and interviewer. This interview was fantastic! Mike was so low key and sweet to Rick. I think it was later than 1969. RIP Mike and Rick! Still so hard to believe that Ozzie, Harriet, Rick and Dave are gone. What a wonderful family!
I, only recently discovered Rick Nelson. In this interview no one worries about being PC. There is just a clean, wholesome, natural, good looking guy. No one tries so hard to be sexy. The conversation naturally flows. Beautiful.
In 1968 I won a College talent show impersonating Rick Nelson singing "Be Bop Baby" He's now my all-time favorite rock singer next to my 2nd favorite, Bobby Darin.
What a sweet, gentle soul Rick was. He must have been a wonderful guy to meet in person. You can see in retrospect here, the source ultimately of his divorce: Rick's life became music and the road (eventually doing TONS of dates just to pay for the divorce) while his wife wanted a stay-home dad (can't really blame her there) and for him to do movies, where he'd be close to home. Rick HATED movies, as it turned out. I think the TV career he'd been through burned him out on the Hollywood moviemaking scene.
People say Elvis was the most handome guy in music, and i love Elvis, and yes he was a very handsome guy, but are those people even looking at Rick Nelson? Because he could give Elvis a run for best looking.
mike douglas and his show were so important on so many levels. i believe he was so really kind and genuinely cared. i grew up coming home from school every day to watch his afternoon show out of philly. he seemed open minded and not one to dodge hot topics of the day. he dealt with them in his own md way. for instance, i will never forget being introduced to jessie winchester through the show, seems like practically the very week that president j. carter made it possible.
So nice to hear him talking about his kids. I wondered why he chose the name Gunnar (tho it is cool)! That's probably the one with the "weird glint" in his eye. :)
I am a huge fan of Rick Nelson...but this clip reminds me of how cool Mike Douglas could be with any guest...not only could he talk but he also knew how to listen...the mark of a great broadcaster.....wish the song had been on this clip....
Great clothes. I love those really long, 3-button shirt cuffs, the billowing shirt sleeves, the huge collar, the vest, the boots. This was how Elvis was dressing back then. I wonder if it was just the general trend, or if Elvis kind of started it. In the '68 Comeback special Bill Belew designed similar shirts for him --- very large collars, long, tight cuffs, boots.
@jesmelric that's right, and studying the old issues of Billboard at the library, I can see it slowly made it's way up the charts. The record came out in (I think) September, but wasn't in the top 40 until January 1970. So this was Rick's first hit in over 5 years. Must've been nice to have a hit after all that time, with a new sound, even a new look!
@omarskats3000 Yes, I have already posted the 66 show. I also have a couple of interview from the early 80s still to post, and I think one from the 70s, as well. However they are not Mike Douglas interviews.
At the time of this interview, he was still going by the name Craig Hundley, which he used as a child actor. Later, when he pursued a musical career, he used the name Craig Huxley.
Such a handsome man, on par with Elvis' good looks, but I've never really looked into Ricky Nelsons work, I probably know his music, but may not realize it's him..
Gentle soul, too bad he let his management completely lie and screw over Allen Kemp, Stephen Love and Pat Shanahan from the Stone Canyon Band. Absolutely disgraceful, they were never the same after those three quit.
strange how sideburns were once considered old fashioned to the younger crowd. but once elvis popularized them almost every male in show business jumped on the bandwagon ,its sort of sad to see so many sheep.
Paul Newhart - this will help.....Gunnar Eric Nelson (born September 20, 1967) is an American musician, singer, and songwriter and international multi-platinum recording artist. Check en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunnar_Nelson He and his twin brother, Matthew, and another Sam...are all musicians.
I found a cassette tape of "The Nelsons" when I was dumpster diving in my apartment complex. They inherited the great hair gene, and that's all; it was terrible! Ended up right back in the dumpster!
Rick was too gorgeous for words.

He was a very humble guy.
*Nelsons
one of the great pioneers of rock and roll rest in peace. rick

If you notice Rick says it's been two years since they had the twins, Matthew and Gunnar were born in 1967.
+jesmelric WELL THE INTERVIEW IS '69 , SO THATS RIGHT ISN'T IT ?
+frank ferro Yes the interview is 1969.
No, I carbon dated it, 1969
That's a 1969 shirt Rick's wearing. The puffy thing went out in 1970.
Wow!! Awesome footage of Ricky Nelson. He's an American treasure.
To this day his tragic death brings great saddness and emotion. I grew up with his family show and a crazy teen idol crush on him
what a nice interview. Wish we could have seen the performance too.
God bless Rick Nelson
. What a sweet guy.
I, only recently discovered Rick Nelson. In this interview no one worries about being PC. There is just a clean, wholesome, natural, good looking guy. No one tries so hard to be sexy. The conversation naturally flows. Beautiful.
What a n utterly lovely man! One in a million.
Glad I grew up with Ricky..such a wonderful man and family.
He was gorgeous
Just Love Ricky he's a real big part of my childhood great home memories
Rick, Mike: 2 men -greatly appreciated for their TALENTS & PERSONALITIES!!
In 1968 I won a College talent show impersonating Rick Nelson singing "Be Bop Baby" He's now my all-time favorite rock singer next to my 2nd favorite, Bobby Darin.
Ohh this is wonderful! Rick's interviews of this period are so rare!
Thanks a lot !! :)

Great problems
to have had! Still,
everything is relative.
At the time, Rick was Mark Harmon’s brother in law, married to Mark’s sister Kristin.
I love this clip. Ricky was hot back then!
Stephanie Newbern always hot
Not that hair tho
He was clean cut in '66, here is his Elvis phase
SUPER Hot!!
He was always hot!
People say Elvis was the most handome guy in music, and i love Elvis, and yes he was a very handsome guy, but are those people even looking at Rick Nelson? Because he could give Elvis a run for best looking.
They kind of look similar.
mike douglas and his show were so important on so many levels. i believe he was so really kind and genuinely cared. i grew up coming home from school every day to watch his afternoon show out of philly. he seemed open minded and not one to dodge hot topics of the day. he dealt with them in his own md way. for instance, i will never forget being introduced to jessie winchester through the show, seems like practically the very week that president j. carter made it possible.
Man, I miss you RN.......
Rick was so sweet and cute.
So nice to hear him talking about his kids. I wondered why he chose the name Gunnar (tho it is cool)! That's probably the one with the "weird glint" in his eye. :)
The Nelsons had Scandinavian ancestry, and Gunnar is a Scandinavian name.
Simply beautiful!!!
Thanks a lot for your post jesmelric!
Rick Nelson's wife and Craig Hundley appeared on a couple episodes of Adam-12. Rick's brother-in-law, Mark Harmon appeared on one episode of Adam-12.
I am a huge fan of Rick Nelson...but this clip reminds me of how cool Mike Douglas could be with any guest...not only could he talk but he also knew how to listen...the mark of a great broadcaster.....wish the song had been on this clip....
The song is on my channel.
I love what Rick said, nobody has the right to impose their will on someone. Amen to that!!!!!
I assume he meant just within the context of the point under discussion.
@JBmiddleOFnoWHERE Yes, I do have the She Belongs to Me performance, and will try and get it posted soon.
@Buckpenn "She Belongs to Me" was released as a single by Decca in 1969. The B side was "Promises".
Just see the pride in his eyes.
His name is Craig Huxley. He was an Emmy award winning musician and producer. He was and still is involved with many Star Trek media projects.
Wow that tie!!!
He acted too.
Great clothes. I love those really long, 3-button shirt cuffs, the billowing shirt sleeves, the huge collar, the vest, the boots.

Thanks J! REALLY looking forward to the She Belongs to Me performance!
Saw the Nelsons in Laughlin, NV last month doing the music of Ricky nelson. Great!
Good looking guy & Great hair!!!
@ronfowlermusic Yes, it was a very creative time for Rick musically and he really came out with some great stuff around that time.
Wow, that is very interesting, thank you for sharing. I looked him up, and he must have been only 15 at the time of this interview!
@jesmelric that's right, and studying the old issues of Billboard at the library, I can see it slowly made it's way up the charts. Aww, Ricky was adorable!
So great!

4:29 Poor "kid" could use some of Nelson's hair genes ..that thing on his head doesn't appear as though it's going to go the distance.
the twins are actually Nelson, from early 90's, right? forgot the name of their 'hit' ;)
The twins became the band NELSON
I would of liked to hear the song. They cut the interview just before Rick was suppose to sing the song
Copyright
*would have *supposed to
Yes, their biggest song was Love and Affection.
He was my idol so good looking
The performance is elsewhere on YT.
So sweet
Where did you find this episode of the Mike Douglas show? I would love to watch other episodes!
I traded another Rick Nelson collector, so I wouldn't know where to find more Mike Douglas episodes.
Rick was so Cool
I Love Ricky♥️
@lindyloftin I will try to get that posted soon :)
That was great, I also remember that red haired kid from Star Trek !
@kikapresley Glad you enjoyed!
At the time of this interview, he was still going by the name Craig Hundley, which he used as a child actor. Later, when he pursued a musical career, he used the name Craig Huxley.
@hsmgeek4ever He was also on in 1981, I have the performances from that, but not an interview.
@Buckpenn I can tell by the hairstyles of Nelson and Douglas this was from 1969.
Randy Meisner was in the Stone Canyon band then, and he fathered twin's in 1970.
*twins
Such a handsome man, on par with Elvis' good looks, but I've never really looked into Ricky Nelsons work, I probably know his music, but may not realize it's him..
Don't you remember him from that episode of ster trek and the children shall lead, he was awesom.
*awesome
They had her X-rayed?
Tracy was six. lol
Tracey is 2 months older than me.... Oy, time sure is slow and sneaky thief of youth.
Little did he know, his kids would follow into acting and movies.
Very handsome.
@jesmelric no the song was released in 1969.
C'est bien lui qui a joué dans un western avec John Wayne
🥰
He is such a dork I love him Lol
Gentle soul, too bad he let his management completely lie and screw over Allen Kemp, Stephen Love and Pat Shanahan from the Stone Canyon Band. Absolutely disgraceful, they were never the same after those three quit.
yeah, figured it out later, 10x for reply
strange how sideburns were once considered old fashioned to the younger crowd. but once elvis popularized them almost every male in show business jumped on the bandwagon ,its sort of sad to see so many sheep.
Nii armsasti kõnelemas oma lastest. Õnneliku inimesena pole imestada, et tal nii palju laule just armastusest on.
@pnull Lol!
Thanks so much for sharing . Fabulous years
Hmm....I wonder what ever happened to those twins. :)
