I am so delighted to have found this! My late grandfather, Nathan Ladenson, was the first challenger to appear on this episode of the show. He was a London taxi driver and beat the panel as you can see. In the 1990s, I made it my mission to try discover if there was a recording of this. The TV production company who owned the series at the time found the archive recording and made me a copy - they didn't charge me as they said "if we had to charge you it would need to be a fortune". They were pleased that my very unwell grandpa would have an old memory ignited. When I sat my grandparents down to watch the video as a surprise, more than 40 years after What's My Line, they simply couldn't believe it. My grandma was in the audience and grandpa was in the show - as far as they were concerned it went out live and that was that. Never to be seen again. What a joy to see that it is now available on TH-cam and can bring more happiness to our family.

lelandjr2 Kinescopes **are** films. Yes, all surviving episodes of WML are kinescopes, which are filmed records of a TV broadcast created by pointing a film camera at a studio monitor.
What's My Line? Yes, but there is a difference. Filming a live performance insured a higher quality of rebroadcasting, whereas Kinescope was a process of filming a projected performance from a monitor screen that was being project from a television camera. The quality of Kinescope was poor in contrast and clarity. By your reply I understand you to mean they are both the same thing, but they are not.
I love Robert Q Lewis! ❤ I didn't get to see him say farewell to the Army Doctor he had a crush on. He is great on this show!! Bennet is full of himself.

I know it's not training in the sense of academic work, but it's a shame that the London cab driver wasn't recognized for his study to acquire "The Knowledge"--a detailed mental map of streets and places in London. I don't know if it's still required in these GPS days, but back then every cabbie had to pass a rigorous test on The Knowledge before getting a cab license.
I remember reading about cabby training and looking at a London map when I was a kid. Seemed to me at the time that building a spaceship would have been easier.
Hedda Hopper's son, William, is best known for playing the investigator Paul Drake on "Perry Mason," starting the year after his episode. But he made many movies prior to that TV work including, the year before this show, as Natalie Wood's father in "Rebel Without a Cause."
Yup, and his father, William D'Wolf Hopper Sr, was one of the greatest vaudeville actors of his time, performing - among other things - "Casey at the Bat" over 10,000 times.

During the questioning of the taxi driver, Hedda Hopper displays a marvelous sense of self, and dot NOT take herself too seriously. This is the first time I've seen her NOT being a reporter/columnist and love her!

I enjoyed watching Ozzie and Harriet Nelson on this show. I have 100 episodes of "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" and "The Nelsons" on dvds 📀. Their show, of course, included their sons David and Ricky. Their show was a lot of fun to watch!
This installment really goes to show how very much the wit and sophistication of the first 18 years of WML that we still enjoy today (sadly lacking in this particular show) depended on the charm and professionalism of Arlene Francis and also ( in my opinion) Bennett Cerf as well.
London cab drivers are VERY highly trained so that was a big mistake. The knowledge is one of the most difficult tests in the UK. Not as much as a nuclear sub commander in the British navy which is the hardest exam in the world
Be honest now, how much training do you think the average cab/taxi driver had in 1956? And John also does mention that it doesn't fit the description of training according to the terms of reference used in the show (doctor, fighter pilot, etc), but it doesn't mean that there isn't any training involved

There have actually been neurological studies on London cab drivers that show that the areas of their brain that store memory and information are larger and more active than in those who haven't learned it, even compared to other cab drivers from most other locales with only Tokyo, Shanghai, and Beijing drivers scoring better.
I’ve taken taxis all around the world and it’s been hit and miss. Before google maps I once had to direct a driver, street by street, to the Toronto International Airport. He didn’t know where it was because he’d only arrived in Canada two weeks before, and was using his cousin’s Beck taxi license. Similar experiences all over North America. But London! Wow! Any tiny obscure laneway, they know it, and the fastest route. Intelligent and knowledgeable drivers too - history, current events, culture, art, politics, they always impress me. Head and shoulders above any other taxi drivers around the world. Sadly, I read that The Knowledge is now being phased out. (Thank you Sadiq Khan.) Technology wins again over the use of the human brain, and I suspect we’ll be poorer for it.

Dr, Taylor was a lovely intelligent woman. I have to admit that I watched a lot of Ozzie and Harriet growing up. I remember it being a great show. My sisters of course liked it a lot more than I did due to Rick and Davie Nelson. Thanks for the video.

I usually have my tray and eat while watching a pgm but to display that tastelessness a preview for another pgm(I think it was naked and afraid. Something like that.)came on and before I could reach my remote to skip thru it a participant of that pgm came on and said something about sticking her finger up some man's rectum.🤦♂️☢
The panel got wrong from the start with the car driver from London. They asked question about what building he worked in and what kind of clothes he wore.
+Dick Wilson I agree with Mister Lewis in having to be knowledgeable and keen witted to be a taxi driver in London. My mother and I had a great cabbie who found us a hotel and gave us info on London too.
Gary's description of Ozzie and Harriet as "an insanely long running ABC sitcom" made me laugh. In fact, I think it was the biggest laugh I had during this entire video and posting. It was the first television sitcom to run for at least 10 years (it lasted for 14) and it was on radio for a few years before it went to television (with a theatrical release movie serving as a test to see how well the radio show would translate to the small screen). The teen girls going gaga over Ricky when his singing career took off (and deservedly so; being the son on a sitcom was no guarantee of musical stardom, for example Ronnie Burns) certainly helped the show have legs. But so did Ozzie's shrewdness of backing the fledgling ABC (from NBC Blue) Network into a corner by insisting on a guaranteed 10 year contract. The television show started a month and a half before I was born so I don't remember the early years of the show. I can see it as the type of show that my parents would have wanted to watch unless there was something on another network that they liked better. But by the time I was old enough to remember my parents' TV viewing preferences. I can't recall this show being on our TV set. I suspect that once Ricky started singing that rock 'n roll that my parents objected to me and my brother listening to, they would no longer have an interest in watching.
If Red Skelton hadn't been drafted into the Army in WWII, the Nelsons would never have been known for their family-centered radio & TV shows. Ozzie led the orchestra on Skelton's weekly radio show & Harriet was the girl singer.
Gotta give Robert Q. credit, he was the only one who came up with Ozzie & Harriet. Eamon not knowing I can understand, but Dorothy & Hedda missing it? tsk, tsk. How many bandleader/singer combos were there on TV in 1956?

See the lovely Harriet Hilliard playing second fiddle to Ginger Rogers, singing 'Get thee behind me satan' or something like that, falling in love with Randolph Scott c. 1937 in 'Follow the Fleet', quite a surprise to me.
Is it just me or did John Daly seem a little perturbed about how the line of questioning went with Miss/Dr Taylor? He got awfully quiet and straight faced.
I noticed that too. One could almost think Hal Block was back in the panel. John looked really annoyed with Robert Q and his flirtiness, and he contiuned being serious during the game.
I would imagine that continual pulling of the ear lobe, his signal for a panelist to back away from a unsavory line of questioning which I imagine was going unheeded by Robert Q Lewis, must really hurt as well as being upsetting.
I think he also did not like the familirity starting with Lewis wanting to call her Carolyn instead of Miss Harper. Not very professional of him, but he always behaves this way, which is why i never took a shining to him.

I remember one time when my mother called me into the living room to see a scene from a movie where Ozzie Nelson was conducting his band and Harriet Hilliard was singing at the microphone. Mom wanted me to see how they looked in the 1940's before they got married and to know what they used to do before their "Ozzie and Harriet" radio and TV sitcom days. (My mom used to do things like that.) I hadn't a clue about what they once did, as familiar to me as they were from television. I'm thinking a lot of people didn't, including 3/4 of the panel in this episode of WML. Criticize Robert Q. Lewis all you like, but at least he knew what they used to do.
Too bad for Ricky Nelson. Ozzie was a manipulative overachiever and benevolent despot who "expected his real-life sons to carry their TV show images into daily life." Ricky experienced a lot of depression.
I have no reason to believe that the UK version of WML ended with a prayer, but if the moderator had the last word like in the U.S., it ended with Eammon.
Ozzie was about 3 years older but Harriet may have aged herself somewhat in her teen and early adult years, living something of a wild life before settling down with Ozzie. For example, she started smoking at age 13 at a time when it was not common for women to smoke at all. She had been in show business since she was three years old. Ozzie, on the other hand, led a boy-next-door kind of life as an Eagle Scout, a football player in HS and college and had begun law school before deciding his future was in entertainment. Many years later, he still had that head male cheerleader look to him. One can almost picture him with a megaphone, wearing a sweater with a scarlet "R" on it, as he was associated with his alma mater, Rutgers, during his career as an entertainer. Harriet had a mature look about her, and easily fell into a typical small screen mom image, typical of 1950's sitcoms.

+Glenna Rose You are absolutely right, but not until at least 5-10 years after Harriet Nelson was 13. She was born in July 1909 so she would have been 13 in 1922-23. Women smoking wasn't such a big thing in silent films. The use of smoking is used to emphasize the androgyny of Marlene Dietrich (who is also dressed in men's clothes). But his films didn't make women glamorous. The main characters in his films were dark, mysterious and creepy. Shorter hair, shorter skirts and other more risque clothing, and women drinking (and flouting the prohibition laws) were more likely to be the way women were portrayed as modern and sexy in the 1920's. Here's a quote from "The Freedom to Smoke: Tobacco Consumption and Identity" by Jarrett Rudy: "While tobacco companies sought to hook smokers and increase sales of their own products, movies promoted a wider revolution in manners and behaviour that was critical in legitimizing women smoking. In the 1920s, American silent films were popular among both anglophones and francophones in Montreal. In these films a cigarette in public and a drink of alcohol stood for dialogue that would suggest a scandalous woman who was perilously leaving her sphere. The _La Presse_ advertisement for the silent film _Lillies of the Field_ in 1924 makes the case. The image of the bare-shouldered woman reclining on a bed smoking is far more sexually daring than any cigarette advertisement during the period. So many flattering accolades are unfairly addressed to Arlene Francis because Ms. Kilgallan, in my humble opinion, has always been stunning in her looks and attire. Frank Sinatra's egotistical disparaging remark regarding a certain aspect of her facial anatomy borders on boyish immaturity. Sinatra could dish it out but in turn couldn't take it!
I respectfully disagree. I understand beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I’m sure you like Dorothy. However, objectively, if employees of central casting were sent out to find an attractive, even beautiful, woman, those returning with Arlene would have a bright future, but any returning with Dorothy would be filing for unemployment insurance. To be misogynistic and crass, on THE scale, Arlene is a full 10, while Dorothy is no higher than 7 on her best day and this episode may be her best day. Much like a stopped clock, Sinatra can occasionally be correct, but Dorothy’s lack of attractiveness isn’t solely due to her chinlessness. None of her facial features are outstanding. She is waifish to the point of frailty, unhealthy looking. Dorothy poses absolutely no competition to Arlene’s looks; matronly Hedda Hopper, perhaps.
I dislike Sinatra so much that I won't watch a movie if he is in it. Do like some of his records, tho-Strangers in the Night and with his daughter-Something Stupid.

There was a bar near CBS' old HQ at 485 Madison Ave called Colbee's(I wonder why). I'm sure Lewis, John Daly, Arthur Godfrey and Ed Murrow spent quite some time there.

Hedda Hopper named names during the McCarthy era. She was awful. I'm surprised she appeared on an I Love Lucy episode as Lucy was accused of being a member of the Communist party at one time during the 50's. Hedda Hopper was a horrible person imo.
I don't think I have ever seen miss Dorthy looking so sexy. She has always been beautiful, fashionable, stunning... but this is sexy! I am loving this look of hers.
She certainly got more and louder wolf whistles than usual. A shame that this episode, like most, wasn't preserved in color to see her new shade of red hair. In b&w it shows up as lighter than her usual shade.

John was very quiet this week, especially when the army doctor was on. Don't think he was happy with Robert Q Lewis flirting so heavily with the lady. He looked rather grumpy.
It is actually fascinating to me that back in 1956 the ogling and flirting with the army doctor that Robert Q Lewis was doing would have been acceptable. To some degree, I suppose it was not, since John Daly was getting visibly annoyed, and Hal Block got fired from the show for doing similar stuff, but even Bennett Cert and John Daly would get into the act in some episodes with attractive female contestants. I think this represents a real cultural change; back then you could do this sort of thing to a certain point and it would actually be taken as a form of flattery.
I always end up looking up people that show up on this program. The army doctor led an interesting life. Look up Carolyn Gerster, MD. She married a German doctor and became an anti-abortion activist.
This is what happens when you have strangers in your house. Outside of Miss Dorthy... I did not like the panel. Mr Daly looked like he too was not pleased. He fired up when Miss Dorthy had control. I do not like when the family is not on at the same time.
shocking that people here are praising hedda hopper as "sweet' - she literally ruined people's lives. kinda ironic considering how many times hopper mentioned Andrews' ethnic background in this episode but it should be remembered that hopper was grossly against the Irish and made a note to bash the Irish people many times in her column
A cabbie dresses like a Cabbie? I guess an independent Cabbie can wear whatever he wants. Weren't Ozzie and Harriet Nelson playing themselves on television? That would make them the first stars of a Reality Show since they basically played .... themselves. But there were no quirks to their reality show since they played the All American nuclear family. Kim Kardashian would have played a weirdo on their show. Back in the 50s, the Kardashians would have had to bend to what used to be American mores.

@Mark Richardson I drove a cab for a while and was ripped off a number of times. I NEVER ripped anyone off.
It is a hard, thankless job!

They weren't touring together. Bennet was in Europe and Arlene was on the West Coast. And yes, this show is totally addictive.
I'm 65 and I remember all of the mystery guests. I watch approximately one episode a day so that I don't run through them too fast. :)

Something like that.)came on and before I could reach my remote to skip thru it a participant of that pgm came on and said something about sticking her finger up some man's rectum.🤦♂️☢

Gary's description of Ozzie and Harriet as "an insanely long running ABC sitcom" made me laugh. In fact, I think it was the biggest laugh I had during this entire video and posting.
It was the first television sitcom to run for at least 10 years (it lasted for 14) and it was on radio for a few years before it went to television (with a theatrical release movie serving as a test to see how well the radio show would translate to the small screen). The teen girls going gaga over Ricky when his singing career took off (and deservedly so; being the son on a sitcom was no guarantee of musical stardom, for example Ronnie Burns) certainly helped the show have legs. But so did Ozzie's shrewdness of backing the fledgling ABC (from NBC Blue) Network into a corner by insisting on a guaranteed 10 year contract.
The television show started a month and a half before I was born so I don't remember the early years of the show. I can see it as the type of show that my parents would have wanted to watch unless there was something on another network that they liked better. But by the time I was old enough to remember my parents' TV viewing preferences. I can't recall this show being on our TV set. I suspect that once Ricky started singing that rock 'n roll that my parents objected to me and my brother listening to, they would no longer have an interest in watching.
If Red Skelton hadn't been drafted into the Army in WWII, the Nelsons would never have been known for their family-centered radio & TV shows. Ozzie led the orchestra on Skelton's weekly radio show & Harriet was the girl singer.

The women's masks seem to have side pieces like eye glasses rather then going over their heads as we commonly think of for masks.
The ladies had masks with ribbon straps instead of elastic bands. They had to tie them on.
Or-----and I'm just spitballing, here---- maybe, just MAYBE......... she took her hat off first. I know, I know, it's probably permanently attached to her head, but I'm thinking there's a slight possibility she wasn't BORN that way.

Regarding the London cab driver, they actually have to pass quite extensive testing. It's almost as hard as becoming a pilot.
Hedda said last week that they wouldn't let her wear one of her hats. I wonder if by saying that publicly she managed to pressure the show into letting her wear a hat. Robert Q Lewis' gambit with the second guest was reminiscent of a Hal Block gambit
Hedda was very popular and they agreed if she wore a hat that wasn't pointy it wouldn't interfere with the lighting, hence the flower hat😊
See the lovely Harriet Hilliard playing second fiddle to Ginger Rogers, singing 'Get thee behind me satan' or something like that, falling in love with Randolph Scott c. 1937 in 'Follow the Fleet', quite a surprise to me.

Is it just me or did John Daly seem a little perturbed about how the line of questioning went with Miss/Dr Taylor? He got awfully quiet and straight faced.
I noticed that too. One could almost think Hal Block was back in the panel. John looked really annoyed with Robert Q and his flirtiness, and he contiuned being serious during the game.
I would imagine that continual pulling of the ear lobe, his signal for a panelist to back away from a unsavory line of questioning which I imagine was going unheeded by Robert Q Lewis, must really hurt as well as being upsetting.
I think he also did not like the familirity starting with Lewis wanting to call her Carolyn instead of Miss Harper. Not very professional of him, but he always behaves this way, which is why i never took a shining to him.

I remember one time when my mother called me into the living room to see a scene from a movie where Ozzie Nelson was conducting his band and Harriet Hilliard was singing at the microphone. Mom wanted me to see how they looked in the 1940's before they got married and to know what they used to do before their "Ozzie and Harriet" radio and TV sitcom days. (My mom used to do things like that.) I hadn't a clue about what they once did, as familiar to me as they were from television. I'm thinking a lot of people didn't, including 3/4 of the panel in this episode of WML. Criticize Robert Q. Lewis all you like, but at least he knew what they used to do.

I believe they were about the same age, but Ozzie Nelson always looked so much younger than Harriet (in my opinion).
Ozzie was about 3 years older but Harriet may have aged herself somewhat in her teen and early adult years, living something of a wild life before settling down with Ozzie. For example, she started smoking at age 13 at a time when it was not common for women to smoke at all. She had been in show business since she was three years old.
Ozzie, on the other hand, led a boy-next-door kind of life as an Eagle Scout, a football player in HS and college and had begun law school before deciding his future was in entertainment. Many years later, he still had that head male cheerleader look to him. One can almost picture him with a megaphone, wearing a sweater with a scarlet "R" on it, as he was associated with his alma mater, Rutgers, during his career as an entertainer.
Harriet had a mature look about her, and easily fell into a typical small screen mom image, typical of 1950's sitcoms.

You are absolutely right, but not until at least 5-10 years after Harriet Nelson was 13. She was born in July 1909 so she would have been 13 in 1922-23. Women smoking wasn't such a big thing in silent films. Note when the first examples of smoking for women in movies is given.

Note that in this list, the first movie is from 1930. The use of smoking is used to emphasize the androgyny of Marlene Dietrich (who is also dressed in men's clothes). There are some women who would have identified with this, but not the average woman.

Fritz Lang was one of the exceptions as far as using women smoking in his silent films. But his films didn't make women glamorous. The main characters in his films were dark, mysterious and creepy.
With the choppy action of silent films, it was much more difficult to make a woman look sensuous smoking than it was later on with "talkies" and the changes in society. Shorter hair, shorter skirts and other more risque clothing, and women drinking (and flouting the prohibition laws) were more likely to be the way women were portrayed as modern and sexy in the 1920's.

"While tobacco companies sought to hook smokers and increase sales of their own products, movies promoted a wider revolution in manners and behaviour that was critical in legitimizing women smoking. In these films a cigarette in public and a drink of alcohol stood for dialogue that would suggest a scandalous woman who was perilously leaving her sphere. The _La Presse_ advertisement for the silent film _Lillies of the Field_ in 1924 makes the case. The image of the bare-shouldered woman reclining on a bed smoking is far more sexually daring than any cigarette advertisement during the period. Later, in Hollywood films of the 1930s, women smoking became much more prominent and evoked far more positive images.One sample of 40 Hollywood films found that 30 percent of heroines smoked, while only 3 percent of female villains took to the habit."

So many flattering accolades are unfairly addressed to Arlene Francis because Ms. Kilgallan, in my humble opinion, has always been stunning in her looks and attire. Frank Sinatra's egotistical disparaging remark regarding a certain aspect of her facial anatomy borders on boyish immaturity. Sinatra could dish it out but in turn couldn't take it!
I respectfully disagree. I understand beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I’m sure you like Dorothy. However, objectively, if employees of central casting were sent out to find an attractive, even beautiful, woman, those returning with Arlene would have a bright future, but any returning with Dorothy would be filing for unemployment insurance. To be misogynistic and crass, on THE scale, Arlene is a full 10, while Dorothy is no higher than 7 on her best day and this episode may be her best day. Much like a stopped clock, Sinatra can occasionally be correct, but Dorothy’s lack of attractiveness isn’t solely due to her chinlessness. None of her facial features are outstanding. She is waifish to the point of frailty, unhealthy looking. Dorothy poses absolutely no competition to Arlene’s looks; matronly Hedda Hopper, perhaps.
I dislike Sinatra so much that I won't watch a movie if he is in it. Do like some of his records, tho-Strangers in the Night and with his daughter-Something Stupid.

There was a bar near CBS' old HQ at 485 Madison Ave called Colbee's(I wonder why). I'm sure Lewis, John Daly, Arthur Godfrey and Ed Murrow spent quite some time there.

Hedda Hopper named names during the McCarthy era. She was awful. I'm surprised she appeared on an I Love Lucy episode as Lucy was accused of being a member of the Communist party at one time during the 50's. Hedda Hopper was a horrible person imo.

It is actually fascinating to me that back in 1956 the ogling and flirting with the army doctor that Robert Q Lewis was doing would have been acceptable. To some degree, I suppose it was not, since John Daly was getting visibly annoyed, and Hal Block got fired from the show for doing similar stuff, but even Bennett Cert and John Daly would get into the act in some episodes with attractive female contestants. I think this represents a real cultural change; back then you could do this sort of thing to a certain point and it would actually be taken as a form of flattery.

This is what happens when you have strangers in your house. Outside of Miss Dorthy... I did not like the panel. Mr Daly looked like he too was not pleased. He fired up when Miss Dorthy had control. I do not like when the family is not on at the same time.

That would make them the first stars of a Reality Show since they basically played .... themselves. But there were no quirks to their reality show since they played the All American nuclear family. Kim Kardashian would have played a weirdo on their show. Back in the 50s, the Kardashians would have had to bend to what used to be American mores.
I recall reading that the living room in O & H's TV show was an exact copy of their actual living room: that does seem odd!
