A Record of A Mortal's Journey to Immortality is the best for me. Because it's like the title, focus on the journey, adventure and character progression. "Foghill of the Five Elements" is god tier leaving me speechless.. Especially when you slow it down, You know how much love they put into it,They hardly miss a frame animating that series..But it's too sad how there are only 7 episodes in total...
As a Chinese -American who watches everything with subtitles because I literally can't hear without them, it is really frustrating because Chinese has a lot of hidden meaning with how something is said, the exact words used, and the spirit of that is almost all taken away with the subtitles. Also, we looove using idioms, which add character to the speech in Chinese, but get taken away in English.
You never once mentioned how the story is usually about the Supreme unparalleled being who rose to become the greatest lord of the people and became a living divine due to how humble he is.
Im more then shocked that DaLiShiRiZhi (Also known as White Cat Legend in the West) isnt on here, has two seasons, super popular in china. Though its so intense on chinese detail and a need on cultural understanding. But like, its solid and high production.
As a kid I loved a Chinese donghua called Nezha, which was a kids show about a boy who was born from an egg who skinned the brother of his love interest and is forced to commit suicide as atonement, and is later reborn from a flower
Kinda surprised "Daily Life of the Immortal King" "Raksasha Street" and "Scissor Seven" weren't mentioned here. Really good donghua (some of the best I've personally seen) and I highly recommend them.
You won’t get Chinese hentai that’s for sure. I think some restrictions are necessary, I really hate that lolicon stuff in anime, I wish they would ban that crap.
Even friendships between two girls or two guys is watched like a hawk. One author who had a girl girl relationship going even tho it was still in the friendship stage had been threatened twice so she hasn’t added anymore.
7:58 There's a Winnie the Pooh ride in Shanghai Disneyland btw. You can freely buy WtP merches in China. The Chainsaw Man blood turned into white is literally just for dehumanizing the Chinese cmon, people that's just a "meme", yeah, a meme that they purposefully make knowing that 99% of people will believe because it fits their view of China and Chinese people. You mentioned Link Click in this video but don't see the bloods there are non censored? Season 2 got a lot of it, also Fog Hill of Five Elements show blood but you believe in that meme??? If you thought the censorship in China is literally like those "my xiaomi phone will explode if i say something bad about Xi Jinping" type, The censorship isn't even 5% what people make it out to be. I will be engaging in good faith to comments so feel free if you would like to give some.
The problem with “donghua” also is that, it lacks originality. Anime will always be forever affiliated with Japan and since “donghua” copies everything about it, it just won’t get the recognition as a distinct art form. Most people will think it’s Japanese anime, not Chinese donghua
Wrong, it is because anime had decades to develop will donghua actually just start flourish in 2017-2018. Donghua copy nothing, even Fog hill of five elements, like here, it is ink wash painting of China, and they already used in animation 80s and 90s. Anime rarely has this kind of art, they even tried to learn for it from China. Most 2d coloring and art also different with anime such as the one use in Scissor Seven, A Will Eternal, The Legend of Hei, The King's Avatar, Link Click..... BTW, donghua also mainly on 3d and exploring it instead of 2d. Full 3d, that's anime series rarely use. Stuff like Battle Through The Heavens, Ling Cage, Record of a Mortal's Journey To Immortality, Soul Land, Soul Land 2, Perfect World, The Demon hunter, Renegade Immortal, The Island of Siliang, Swallowed Star, Jade Dynasty, Big Brother, The Ravages of Time, Degenerate Drawing Jianghu, Forty Millenniums of cultivation, My heroic husband, Back to the Great Ming, The First Order, Immortality, The Great Ruler, Dragon Prince Yuan, Martial Universe, Jun You Yun, Young Brewmaster's Adventure, Great Journey of teenagers and more... Even the one released yesterday, Slay the Gods. Coming soon in 15th August, Sword Coming..... Donghua is killling it in 3d.
Oh yeah, just so people know, many Chinese animators doesn't use their Chinese name cause they're hated anywhere, anytime, and people will respect them more if they use Japanese names, examples: Hiromatsu Shuu(real name Zhou Haosong)
in domestic discussions, people tend to believe that the biggest thing holding back Donghua is commercialization models, studios having a hard time securing funding, and producers want to realize profits, keeping series going sometimes require sacrificing pacing or business. Sometimes projects with artistic but not commercial potential get canceled (most recently 汐塔 and 幽明志 announced last year but both suspended due to ByteDance cutting funding). China by no means lack people of vision and talent, and there are many great indie animated shots posted to Bilibili, but financially making them into big projects is the challenge.
A few years ago I found donghua and have been hooked ever since. FHo5E and LC are just nuts. The art styles are so unique. Both the scenery and character designs always feel fresh compared to anime.
Hope you can check another China's animation called The Legend of Hei. It started of as shorts with 28 episodes. Then it got a full length movie, now second season of shorts ended, and I heard they are work on sequel for the movie. Plus they have a spin-off manga too.
I'm a little bit confused so why do we give Chinese anime its own name but so many people fight from The boondocks and Avatar from being just called cartoons?
Because anime is japenese for cartoon. Donghua is chinese for cartoon. So on so forth. They are all in fact cartoons. So doesnt matter what you call it
@@AtlasVoid_ BUT the reason we don't like associating avatar or boondocks as cartoon simply lies in the fact that most western folks associate cartoon with kids...so adult shouldn't be watching it which gives a bad taste while anime sounds more appropriate and directly lets ppl know that It is not for kids and it most likely has a deeper story for all ages.
@Ticking-time-bomb once again anime just means cartoon. You have many anime that are for children. I can easily find them. The ones we see though are made more for teens and adults. Just a matter of area. So at the end of the day it does not matter what you call it. And if we are basing around art style. Boondocks and atla would still be considered anime.
@@AtlasVoid_ IK man I said in the west side anime sounds more appropriate for teen/adult cartoon bcz most ppl in the west don't know that anime means cartoon and even if they did it still doesn't sound like a cartoon which is associated to children only by most ppl there. Anime in western terms doesn't mean cartoon its more associated with animated show which is why ppl prefer having boondocks & ATLA be called anime.
The issue for me is I see a cool Chinese anime want to check it out and then find out it has no English dub I personally believe that is what is holding it back from becoming more main stream to the mass public
Everyone is NOT ready for Lord Of the Mysteries to be released, the plot of the 1000+ chapter novel IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE and i actually can’t wait for it to come out!!!
Another thing to note is that English subs move really fast since a lot of information can be expressed in a single syllable in Chinese while English might have three or four syllable words.
the main problem for them for one i think is accesibility and language, since theyre mostly made by billibilli and therefor not for western markets, some of them dont even have subtitles let alone dubs... and as great as the animation can be, watching something without the ability to understand anything just doesnt make sense... im to this day trying to find somewhere to watch shuo feng po shen zhi
If the Animators are thriving as it is, Just leave it at that. It is just a matter of time before the biggest names start getting together and getting proper fund to deliver more polished work

Should have mentioned the Lord of The Mysteries adaptation soon to come out, it's the most famous webnovel, even in the west, and absolutely HUGE in china. Definitely mainstream.
This may be just because donghua has only been on the anime fan radar for like three or four years with Nezha, Immortal King, Fabulous Beasts, et cetera, but it seems as if a majority of those spotlighted are about Chinese mythology, with every other donghua referencing Heaven. Of course, that may change in the span of a decade or two, yeah. X3
Can we just mention that spare me great lords anime series released years prior to solo leveling? I am not informed on which was written first, but with how good spare me great lord is, it sucks to see it hidden behind the mainstream by the great internet wall of China.
Please give love to False Memory. It's an independent project made by a small team but the concepts and animation are sooooooooooo good for a small production. Please give strengh to their PV episode cause it really deserves it

I doubt Te Wei is Chinese Walt Disney.. The Wan Brothers is bigger... Btw, cultural revolution ban animation production because the cost is high and Chinese government wanted to focus on other industry. After cultural revolution end, the animation industry actually not flourish yet, because only a few animation studio available and working on project from government TV channel. Only until 2010, Chinese government officially allow private companies to invest, produce and air their animation on the own platform, hence the starting of the rise of Chinese animation.
Man I’m so happy that someone talked about this. In the past decades, the Chinese animation industry entered a renaissance all thanks to a series called Qin’s Moon. Since then many talented animators have shown their skills and while both the western and Japanese animation industry is somewhat stagnating, donghua has really been a breath of fresh air. However the political and economical climate as of now is very unfavorable for China. Censorship has always crippled the industry on top of that the CCP under Xi Jinping basically turned the world against him and making China very unfavorable to the rest of the world. The recession is also hitting China hard and any companies are disappearing overnight. Honestly it’s only a matter of time that this’ll all start affecting the newly emerging industry. I really believe that spreading the popularity of donghua is important especially now. This industry is really a testament that art and expression can blossom even under an oppressive regime. Also goes to show how talented the artists are in China as they reached such levels while being handicapped by censorship.
Fog hill of the 5 elements has an s2 now! 雾山五行之犀川幻紫林 (Fog hill of five elements: Hardened valleys of Illusionary Purple forest, something like that). Another donghua is The Legend of Hei! not just the movie but the web series that came even before that! One big thing I think you missed is also the abundance of 3D chinese animations, honestly I feel theres more 3D then 2D in donghuas sometimes....they aren't in the style of Spiderverse or chain saw man but more like video game cutscenes. that might give impressions of odd clunky looking people models moving, but plenty of them, like Mortal's journey to immortality, gets the faces and movements pretty realistic and does the micro expressions very well. Also plenty of actions and well animated enviorments

Can't red blood is just western propaganda, there are many red blood in Chinese animated series, from Fog Hill of five elements, A Will Eternal, Blades of the Guardians, even 3d like Renegade Immortal, Ling Cage Incarnation, Perfect World, Swallowed Star and more..
@@TheExtraterrestrial99 Shhh, can't go against the narrative. Quick, claim they erase the presence of black people in their media!
The white censored blood on Rize’s face makes it look like Kaneki’s date went much better than it actually did lmao.

Daily life of the demon king and outcast were my fav 😻😻😻
yess i love that one, it rimiended me of my fav anime saiki k lol
Wasn't it Daily life of the immortal king? Or is it a translation error?
@@Loppedofflemons its both i think
Outcast is good but daily life of immortal king feels like a ripoff of saiki kusuo 😒

Fan Ren Xiu Xian Zhuan (A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality)
Perfect World
BTTH
Tales of demons and gods
Renegade Immortal
Throne of Seal
Snow Eagle Lord (Xue Ying Ling Zhu)
I recommend Martial World
I recommend scissor seven
A Record of A Mortal's Journey to Immortality is the best for me. Because it's like the title, focus on the journey, adventure and character progression. While other martial arts donghuas focus on overpower and harem.
I would recommend Bai You Pu (Manual of Hundred Demons) that also have adventure genre.
Aiyou de Mishi (X and Y) for those who still craving for mystery genre after watching Link Click
Wait a sec i already watched all of them🤨

Really excited for To be hero X. Haven't seen so much traction on an unreleased donghua, and pretty sure itll be worth it too.
i can’t wait for it either, but when does it come out?! it said it was supposed to release last year
I can see you put a crap ton of work into this video. It's legendary. Thanks man

Amazing video! I knew everything about the history of anime but nothing of the history of donghua! This was very informative. Subscribed
It was because of reading murim/wuxia webtoons that got me into watching donghuas, can't believe i've been missing out on such amazing animation
the fact that people call it anime even though it was made in China proves that anime has a recognized style and being made in Japan isn't the only thing that can make something "anime"
i would love to call it donghua, but then most people wouldn't understand what i'm talking about
It's Eastern Animation.
Just wait for lord of the mysteries it will be the best donghua

This dude didn't mention the best recent donghua that I've seen, Blade of the Guardians/Biao Ren. The fight scenes were some of the best of the past animation year and half.
Ohhh Blade of thw Guardians is so good it is my first ever donghua as well
Waiting for lord of mysteries to make a big splash.
I'm treating myself to the 3D ones, currently going through Swallowed Star, Jade Dynasty, Sealed Throne and Sould Land.
Another 2D donghua suggestion is Blade of the Guardians, very cool historical fiction
Finally at long last, actual Chinese cartoons.
5:02 why did bro recommend it to us and then spoil us 💀💀💀
You're telling me, what i do
As a stick figure animator..... originated from china?
Well damn
Respect
The original RHG
"Foghill of the Five Elements" is god tier leaving me speechless.. Especially when you slow it down, You know how much love they put into it,They hardly miss a frame animating that series..But it's too sad how there are only 7 episodes in total...
Ik it isnt a series or movie, but reverse 1999 art style and animations and also the lore are the best bro its insane
An anime adaption with it will go so hard cs its so good

i wanted to watch some Chinese to practice my mandarin but on some sites where there's both english and Chinese subtitles like at 5:08
As a Chinese -American who watches everything with subtitles because I literally can't hear without them, it is really frustrating because Chinese has a lot of hidden meaning with how something is said, the exact words used, and the spirit of that is almost all taken away with the subtitles. Also, we looove using idioms, which add character to the speech in Chinese, but get taken away in English.
@@elainez Yeah i realize that even the old Chinese couple when they're watching a series on TV it's always with Chinese subtitles.
I'm waiting for lord of mysteries
Scissor seven is really one of the underrated goats of dongua
Daily Life of the Immortal King has some sick animations, it ended up being my favorite donghua shows ever
You never once mentioned how the story is usually about the Supreme unparalleled being who rose to become the greatest lord of the people and became a living divine due to how humble he is.
Link click has THE BEST song in any show ever. The ending song blows my mind
Im more then shocked that DaLiShiRiZhi (Also known as White Cat Legend in the West) isnt on here, has two seasons, super popular in china. Though its so intense on chinese detail and a need on cultural understanding. But like, its solid and high production.
"As an 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗩𝗜𝗥𝗚𝗜𝗡, I see this as an absolute win"
All Saints Streets is really wholesome and nice, you got to watch it.
I was just going to comment this! I watched the whole series in a day it was so addicting
As a kid I loved a Chinese donghua called Nezha, which was a kids show about a boy who was born from an egg who skinned the brother of his love interest and is forced to commit suicide as atonement, and is later reborn from a flower
Otakus from China are called Zainus
Kinda surprised "Daily Life of the Immortal King" "Raksasha Street" and "Scissor Seven" weren't mentioned here. Really good donghua (some of the best I've personally seen) and I highly recommend them.
nobody mentioned immortal king
i saw the link click opening, knew i needed to watch it, and now i cant wait for the 3rd season
You won’t get Chinese hentai that’s for sure. I think some restrictions are necessary, I really hate that lolicon stuff in anime, I wish they would ban that crap.
ya porn is illegal in china
Even friendships between two girls or two guys is watched like a hawk. One author who had a girl girl relationship going even tho it was still in the friendship stage had been threatened twice so she hasn’t added anymore.
Don't worry dood, that white stuff that comes out of the hotdog ain't blood.
@@Xaforn good riddance, we get bombarded with gay stuff in the US. It’s creating a real identity crisis here.
be glad, because in chinese anime is a lot less fun-service / sexualizing children
7:58
There's a Winnie the Pooh ride in Shanghai Disneyland btw.
I am so glad donghuas are finally getting more attention 🔥
Guys you should definitely watch Scissor Seven it is one of best Chinese anime and also available in english dub
The white censored blood on Rize’s face makes it look like Kaneki’s date went much better than it actually did lmao.
So doesnt matter what you call it
@@AtlasVoid_ Finally, someone I can agree with
@@AtlasVoid_ BUT the reason we don't like associating avatar or boondocks as cartoon simply lies in the fact that most western folks associate cartoon with kids...so adult shouldn't be watching it which gives a bad taste while anime sounds more appropriate and directly lets ppl know that It is not for kids and it most likely has a deeper story for all ages.

They need to animate Manhua "release that Witch"
That intro WAS TUFFFFFFFFF
My personal favourite is To be Hero. Ranchy humour, hilarious character design, short, simple episodes.
I saw Spare Me! Great Lord! and clicked so fast because I never see anyone talking or referencing it.
the main problem for them for one i think is accesibility and language, since theyre mostly made by billibilli and therefor not for western markets, some of them dont even have subtitles let alone dubs... and as great as the animation can be, watching something without the ability to understand anything just doesnt make sense...

Should have mentioned the Lord of The Mysteries adaptation soon to come out, it's the most famous webnovel, even in the west, and absolutely HUGE in china. Definitely mainstream.
Lord of the Mysteries will be the next goat that comes from chinese donghua
This may be just because donghua has only been on the anime fan radar for like three or four years with Nezha, Immortal King, Fabulous Beasts, et cetera, but it seems as if a majority of those spotlighted are about Chinese mythology, with every other donghua referencing Heaven. Of course, that may change in the span of a decade or two, yeah. X3
