@sketchersstar icon comes from an nsfw doujin called metamorphosis/emergence, which, it has moderate gore and the creator stated that they didn't even like their creation, and they mostly made it to send a message. Emergence is a manga series that explores themes of identity, trauma, and mental health. The story follows a high school student named Ochita who experiences a traumatic event that leads to a split personality disorder. The philosophy behind the manga is rooted in the idea that our experiences shape who we are and that healing can come from understanding and accepting all parts of ourselves. The story also touches on the impact of societal pressures and the importance of seeking help when needed.
I feel like demographics (shonen, shojo, etc) has more to do with the publishing magazine than the subject matter. For example death note is a very serious, mature manga but it's a shonen. And then there's non non biyori, a cute bubbly manga and it's seinen
Shounen, shojo, seinen, etc refer to specific demographics the content is targeted at, i.e, the type of audience the writer and/or the marketing team had in mind during the production of the story. They're not genres of story telling. Action, Romance, comedy, etc are the only actual genres. One or more genres can fall under a specific demographic. Shounen anime's targeted demographic according to it's name, is young teen boys. So action is a common genre you'd find under it. It also means it's writing will commonly be less heavy handed/mature, with pacing and writing elements more in tune with facilitating the rhythm of action based story telling. But then you also have shows like "Frieren: Journey's End" being classified as Shounen, so these rules in the long run don't really have all the hand in determining what should be seen as Shounen/Seinen/etc or not or what writing decisions are fine under a genre.
For me, demographics dictate the trend of what is expected from these works, but the content is the author's and each magazine has its own genre trend, That being said, you have a Banana Fish Shoujo and a JoJo Shounen and later half of one of its parts in Seinen magazine and they are works that detach themselves from their demographic characteristics at the same time with strong characteristics of these demographics, but they do not dictate the story It's one of the reasons why I don't care and carry out analyzes without limiting myself to the demographics of the work, paying more attention to the content.
Half correct. Every self-published works fall into doujin. They are often derivative works. Both amateurs and professionals can make doujinshi as long as they are self-published. They are often sold via conventions such as comiket. Also worth noting that for those who don't know, doujinshi is a form of doujin. Doujinshi means that they are printed (magazine, manga, novel, etc).
A few more recommendations; Yuri; Sweet Blue Flowers, Whispered Words, Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon, How Do We Relationship?, Girl Friends and Kase-san Food; Sweetness and Lightning Shojo; Kodocha Psychological; Apollo's Song
Hey man great video, just a quick correction. Detective Conan, or Case closed, wasn’t published on Weekly Shonen Jump but it was on Shogakukan’s magazine Weekly Shonen Sunday.
YESS i love horror and psychological manga. I had a whole phase about Junji Ito and I just finished his book Gyo, death stench creeps. And Im back in my phase about monster, which will always be a series thats close to my hear cuz its GOOD
Comedy gets no respect. Someone told me his top comedies of the year were and he listed 3 ecchi harem. He thought it was pointless to watch comedy without tits and besides that sex humour it's the only humour he enjoys. I was crashed.
Yokai doesn't mean ghost, the closest English translation is "faerie". Sure, they can be characters of horror stories, but they might just as well appear in children's faerie tales. The Japanese word for ghost is yurei, and ghost stories are called kaidan.
My recommendations: 7 Seeds (josei) - horror/survival/mystery about 5 groups of people that were put into a a cryogenic sleep after scientists discovered a huge meteor that is going to hit the earth and wipe almost all life. They get woken up once conditions on earth had become safe enough to live in Dance Subaru (seinen) - psychological drama about a ballet dancer. It's a simple premise but the journey is so worth it I Want to Hold Aono-kun so Badly I Could Die (seinen) - horror romance about a girl and her boyfriend Aono that died and came back as a ghost and their journey as they slowly start to realize that something is off about Aono Sleeping Dead (yaoi) - horror about a teacher who gets brought back from the dead by some mad scientist and can only survive by eating other humans. It's surprisingly cute
Thank's for video. Even after 10 years of being interested in Japanese media, I did not know some stuff. But just to clarify. Yaoi is not the same as BL (Boys love). From what I have gathered, Yaoi is typically for older audience and most includes explicit sex scenes. On the other hand, BL is just general tag for gay romance (Sasaki to Miyano is currently not yaoi).
7:19 HOLY S*** I JUST REMEMBERED SITTING IN A DARK ROOM WITH LIGHT FROM THE TV WHEN THEY'D BROADCAST THE OLD ADAPTATION OF CAPTAIN TSUBASA LATE AT NIGHT WHEN I WAS A KID AND MY PARENTS WERE SLEEPING. Good times you could have mentioned 'bartender' with the food genre, since you also talked about drinks
I've been looking at your channel since the first video of this series blew up. You found something in a differen't niche and made it work for you. This awesome! Keep it up
A fun fact about Captain Tsubasa is that it singlehandedly inspired Japan’s greatest player of all time named Hidetoshi Nakata. He at the time was not only Japan or Asia’s biggest player but was a global celebrity. Without him Roma (Italian club) might have never won their 3rd title after 20 years of no league titles. He also was fairly responsible to the development of the National team too.
Note for the horror section. Yokai is a much broader term than just ghosts. It encapsulates everything from spirits and demons to cryptids, mythical creatures, and so on.
maybe explain manga magazines like Shounen Jump(the ones that serialized One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto Boku No Hero), Shounen Weekly(which serialized Fairy Tail), Comic Yuri Hime(serialized Yuru Yuri), Comic Cune(known manga in this magazine: Hinako Note, Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san, Pan de Peace, Watashi no Tame ni Nuginasai), Manga Time Kirara(famous manga titles: Hidamari Sketch, K-ON, Gochiusa, Kinmoza, Urara Meirochou, A-Channel, Blend S, New Game, Bocchi The Rock, Machikado Mazoku, Comic Girls, Slow Start, Gakkou Gurashi, Yuyushiki, ...), etc
Doujin's origin meaning was pretty much manga fanfiction, as in, a story written by non official sources and drawn out in a story, but as most hentai is technically defined as Doujin by its fanfic nature, it took on the name and changed its meaning to sexual manga based around existing fiction.
the biggest problem with this video is that it is mixing demographic and genres and meshing them under the same umbrella which is such a disservice to the manga industry and authors as a whole.
If you want the best 4koma mangas check out every manga serialized in the Manga Time Kirara magazines, you might recognize a lot of these titles from the anime adaptations, such as Hidamari Sketch, K-ON, Gochiusa(my favorite series of all time), Kinmoza, A-Channel, Blend S, New Game, Machikado Mazoku, Urara Meirochou, Slow Start, Comic Girls, Bocchi The Rock, etc.
2:33 I don't understand why To Your Eternity is considered a Seinen. I am currently watching the anime (just finished Bonchien arc), and, it didn't seem that kind of story that usually seinens have. Maybe the manga has a more mature plot and a more mature arguments. I honestly would but To Your Eternity as a psychological, seeing the theme of immortality and how Fushi doesn't want to live forever, which can be connected to the theme of suicide; but that's just my opinion, so.
I want y'all to know that One, the author of One Punch Man, is a very, very good artist. I don't know when he learnt, but he deliberately draws One Punch Man the way he does which I think is hilarious
