It is safer for the mechanics, gives more control (he can accelerate at 3rd speed if he eventually feels it's better than waiting for 2nd), and it doesn't take much longer (maybe even quicker because 3rd slows down the transmission a little for a faster/smoother transition to 2nd).

understeering was a big problem with the quattros, because of the big engine in the front. thats why the next version had the cooling and a lot of other stuff in the back of the car, so taht it had nearly 50/50 weight distribution.

It perhaps should be noted that some of the very short braking 'stabs' the driver does are to deal with 'pad knock off'. This is where, as the car travels the brake pads drop back slightly into the caliper and away from the disk surface. 'Tapping' the pedal brings them back close so when he does need the brakes and presses the pedal it takes less time for them to take effect (as the pads have less to travel).
wtf do you have any understanding of cars and turbos? The Antilag is what causes the explosions, you know the big bangs that are freaking loud? That's the fresh oxide that goes from the intake over a valve that closes upon releasing the gas, into the exhaust, and then the fresh oxide ignites with the rest of the pretrol, keeping the air-flow, so when you go back on the gas, your turbo kept its rotations per minute at a decent spot and therefore being able to produce a high pressure in the intake. That's anti lag, and it's in the Audi S1 quattro.
I've got much more respect for this kind of racers than any of the F1 drivers. I'm not a racer but I believe this kind of driving needs more skills than a F1 driver...

I know why he's not using heel n toe and it's a amazing and beautiful thing, I'm bad at explaining stuff like this, but I use this technique under high stress situations in the mountains, he is one precise driver. Love it!!!

Think there is a lot going on Cem. With the old turbos' you had to keep the revs high/turbo spinning so many times you would brake and have your foot on the gas at the same time.Braking will move weight forward so increase front end grip but there are some occasions where he does this and the car doesn't need it so I suspect this is just to keep the turbo spinning.
I noticed when he downshifts, he goes through all the gears before accelerating instead of just going into that gear. Is this normal? And never knew how power sliding was done. Cool vid!
Yes is normal, some drivers will 'block shift' by going say from 5th to 2nd in one go but going down through the gears also helps to stabilise the car under braking (essentially adding extra 'engine braking')

Senna famously used a "stabbing at the throttle" technique long after the Turbo era which many said was what he'd learnt from driving the Turbo cars.
That has always puzzled me as there is clearly no heel and toe OR auto-blip. Instead it appears the gearbox may be a 'pre-selector'. This is a type of gearbox whereby you change gear as normal BUT the system does not actually engage the gear until the appropriate speed is achieved. Checkout 'pre-selector' gearboxes in google/wiki
i think this is somethink like Hill Climb and not Rally. Hes doing this LF Braking for different reasons: Hold the boost while driving through a corner in which you normally roll between braking and the point of accelerating when you have a NA Engine. Maybe he is also using it for better traction, it looks like, that the car is RWD so he is braking du make the Limited Slip work better. and as already said for getting weight to front tires to reduce understeer.

+gurjinder singh you can shift just as fast on a synchromesh box if you do it properly. If properly done, there should be little to no resistance to the selector going in the right position. Be gentle with the gear knob, treat like an egg. You don't need to slam it into gear. If you feel resistance, that's the synchro ring being worn the fuck out.

That has all changed at the WRC level. The style is now quite different.
And for one thing this is not a rally race it's a hill climb(no co driver). Two any modern rally car has a dog box and a sequential shifter, if not a fully electronic setup. So to idiots out there this looks impressive. to most of the commenters in here this video is just sort of cool and historic Audi footage.

If there is a rpm difference, dropping the clutch at un-synchronized speeds will cause your car to "brake" on the clutch. At high speeds this can have unwanted side effects on handling stability. The margin for error is very small when cornering at highway speeds.

god help... it's obviously because it's a very special, expensive and computerized transmission. If you have a stock car, then when you are going in 2nd gear, then slow down to ~1100 rpm, just not to stall the engine, then shift down to 1. You slowed down as slow as you could but the rpm went up. Now this guy is fucking not at ~1000 when he slows down, but the rpm is kinda not going anywhere... it's like he is pushing the clutch bu he doesn't

I do the same in Dirt Rally, although I'm not as good as this guy. But why not use that left foot, when you know you won't use the clutch for that moment.
Reminds me a lot of myself but I use less bricks around the corners maybe it's because I have a lot less power lols 😂. I figured it out your gear ratio is shorter my final drive is a 3.78 I rely more on inertia for you it seems to be engine power that is why you rely on breaking in corners a little more than necessary or it could be your turbo is just a little too big either way really great driving!!!
Not so relevant with rally, more to smooth out downchanges and 'flatten' the braking in RWD (adding some engine braking). It is odd though that he appears to downchange and raise the clutch but no rpm rise? may be some special ecu programming that stops the rpm rising on downshift. Not uncommon to have 'auto blip' which effectively does the heel & toe for you.

this is the type of racing i like.. where drivers have to actually shift.. it takes a lot of skills and concentration.

Looks to me like he's misscalculates the corner entry speed a bit to much/often. But that's just me I guess.

I do the same in Dirt Rally, although I'm not as good as this guy. But why not use that left foot, when you know you won't use the clutch for that moment.

Reminds me a lot of myself but I use less bricks around the corners maybe it's because I have a lot less power lols 😂. I figured it out your gear ratio is shorter my final drive is a 3.78 I rely more on inertia for you it seems to be engine power that is why you rely on breaking in corners a little more than necessary or it could be your turbo is just a little too big either way really great driving!!!

The car is definitely AWD, and he brakes while pushing the throttle so the wheels dont lock. (There is no ABS on this) REAL MACHINE & REAL DRIVER

Funny how the new fad is "heel toe" when this guy didn't use it once.
Not so relevant with rally, more to smooth out downchanges and 'flatten' the braking in RWD (adding some engine braking). It is odd though that he appears to downchange and raise the clutch but no rpm rise? may be some special ecu programming that stops the rpm rising on downshift. Not uncommon to have 'auto blip' which effectively does the heel & toe for you.
