My grandfather cant read. He pretty much dropped out early because he needed to help work and just wasnt getting it at the time. He ended up getting marreid to my grandmother and she has been very supported and able to help him through life for the most part.
Yea im balling because i have an illiterate grandpa who was born in the great depression and dropped out in the 3rd grade to support his family, so he never got the oppritunity to read.
I have my B.A. in English from a great university, but I guarantee you that back counter would have turned into a war zone and that actress would have been on the floor if I had been there that day.
My dad can’t read. His parents abused him so he never really got an good education. I’m just so happy these people stepped up. Thank you some much for all the likes and support!
She didn’t forget to tell that her grandpa’s great at math. She wanted to encourage him by telling him she knows that people who can’t read can great at many other things.
Agreed. I used to work at a homeless shelter in college and there was an illiterate teenage girl with her mom there a few months. She was an absolutely astonishing artist and could draw pictures of landscapes you couldn't believe. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and shouldn't be put down for the things we struggle in :( Coming from someone who is "math illiterate" and only passed college math by the skin of my teeth.
I’m a reading educator & I deal with children who come from disadvantaged homes & they all struggle with reading. I’d like to take the entire family into my room & teach them the beauty of reading. My great grandmother grew up on the Dakota prairie, she was in college at 16 & graduated with a degree & taught school in a one room schoolhouse in 1924. I have a legacy of readers in my family. I’m so blessed.
Bless the last Lady a educator who had the best words like All the others who stepped forward. Reading is not the most important skill in the world. Proper manners is.
I can relate. My 32 year old son is handicapped. Severe learning disability. He's a tall man, and over weight. He was made fun of continually in high school and dropped out after grade 11 due to depression. It broke my heart as a father. One day my son Bryan told me he was at home as his mother went to work, A repair man came by to fix something and recognized Bryan as a classmate from high school. They chatted about high school, and Bryan went on to tell me that this gentleman out of the blue apologized to my son form making fun of him in school , and upon seeing him he felt he owed him an apology. Bryan told him that it was alright. No hard feelings. That's my son. He always took the longer road and I am very proud of him to this day.
being illiterate is unacceptable you failed him as a parent, now your son will depend on others for the rest of his life. Thanks good for nothing moron another idiot that the state will steal my money to help support, fuck you.

@Kandy Kandy Never had a night out with the "girls?" I'm assuming you're a woman who's just looking for an argument. Or more specifically, a toxic feminist. Yippee.
I actually had this situation happen to me around 1996. A man I worked with was asked to fill out new Health Insurance paperwork for our employer. I saw him in the corner of the break room struggling to understand the large amount of paperwork in front of him. I was a supervisor, and sat down with him. I said to him quietly "Jesse? you can't read can you?" He said no, and almost started crying. I told him "o problem, lets see if we can't get this finished tonight" and I read everything aloud to him and helped him finish the forms. Then Jesse informed me he grew up in Mississippi and went to work before the 7th grade to help his family (all ten of them). The funny thing is, Jesse managed to raise two daughters, one was in Medical school, the other had just graduated law school. Later that week I found a program through the local community center to teach him to read and write, and I paid for it out of my pocket......a year later he was reading the newspaper to me. I still hear from him from time to time........by mail.

My grandfather has a 4th grade reading level and never learned multiplication or division because he had to drop out of school to help his parents feed his other 13 siblings. He can read menus and such, real basic stuff but he has a hard time with larger words. It's heart breaking because he's really very intelligent and probably could have gotten much farther in life if he had gotten more opportunities in life.
This made me cry because when I was little my mother was in an accident and got a brain injury and she couldn't read after that. She was treated very rudely from that point on. I had to help her and I still do. I still remember people that would look at us and "her" like we were "less than." This brings up a lot of emotions for me.
@@katerinapetrova3389 - She's doing great, but unfortunately the damage to her brain can never be reversed. Health-wise she is fabulous. Thank you so much for asking :)
As someone who grew up in extreme poverty and now an educator, this video hit hard. She is absolutely right on everything. Not everyone can receive an education
You don't have to have a higher education to know right from wrong and be kind to help someone in need. Whatever happened to thinking of someone else instead of I,I, I...me, me me....my, my my?? So many people are wrapped up in themselves now and don't give a damn about anyone else. What goes around always comes around! You get what you give.
You are so right. Even if they had a perfect education but still couldnt afford enough f00d or possibly had a physically or mentally abusive situation that can distract the shit out of anyone trying to learn. Some people do have to work young also. Some people even lose the ability to do things after head trauma and have to relearn things. So many things can contribute to a person not being able to read.

Old soul/raised right vibes. Plain as day. I wish them every good thing in this world.
my father was illiterate until he was 62. He taught himself because there was no adult program. i was shocked and amazed when he called me to come over to read the newspaper. then he showed me he could read. I have never been so proud of my father. he lived life fighting it, but he was literate when he passed. Life was always hard for him. He never blamed anyone.

finishing a military school, my then girlfriend took me to a Wendy's for lunch, while in uniform. She was a counselor and I was an Army Reserves (1993-94). A wheel chair guy had a seizure from all the lobby commotion. Without a 2d thought, I got up and instantly cleared tables removing congestion allowing her room to work. Her voice settled him down. His unaware minder was in the men's room answering nature's call. It was a small gesture, but it was June and he bought us milkshakes as his thanks. TEAMWORK is a spectacular thing.

@@lianasoares8052 you must be pretty young not to get this. It's not as cut and dry as you make it out to be. Life wasn't always peaches and cream like it is now. In most rural areas people lived rough, impoverished lives, and more often than not they had to quit school to make enough money to feed themselves and their family. It's not as rough nowadays in life with truancy laws and stuff now but I would agree anybody under thirty has no excuse not being able to read with the sheer amount of resources out there to help them. Although older people are from a different time and had a lot less resources at their disposal. But you shouldn't make such broad accusations without considering the complexity of such a topic.
Beautiful job all. Thanks for showing us this. It reminds us how human beings can be so compassionate. I hope most of the caring people in this video were the majority.
MAD respect for the nice lady in red. She handled it perfectly. What she says about having opportunities is just so true… it’s hard for the privileged to realize the lack of opportunities the poorer people have.
It SHOULDN'T be hard for them to realize it. The problem was in the home and being improperly raised and having a terrible set or a lack of morals and values. That's a community of people who follow a code.
The educator got to me. I have mild autism and ADHD. And some pretty dismissive teachers back in middle school. Almost slipped through the cracks and I'm so glad a few good people helped me out of that situation.
