What would you do when you think no one is watching? What Would You Do? (WWYD?) explores the varying answers with the help of hidden cameras capturing individuals who have been placed within seemingly everyday situation that quickly go ary. The individuals on this hidden camera show are forced to make tough calls when directly faced with situations of racism, violence, hate crimes, and other hot button cultural issues. Catch John Quinones reporting on these individuals as they make split-second decisions to intervene or mind their own business. WWYD? airs Friday nights at 9|8c on ABC.
What Would You Do? (WWYD) is a hidden camera show, hosted by ABC News correspondent John Quinones, in which unknowing bystanders are placed in uncomfortable, and often compromising real world scenarios in public. WWYD’s hidden cameras focus on the average person’s responses and reactions to these issues of social responsibility. Topics such as gay couples being affectionate in public, date rape, racism and racial profiling, interracial couples, abusive parents, drunk driving, and harassment of the homeless are touched upon in this series. What will you do? Would you choose to intervene in these situations? Watch and join the discussion.

Omg that one lady.
“It’s not your job to help him.”
That is literally the primary purpose of a waiter- to help and serve customers.
Exactly!
when john came out she had the 'i shouldve helped him' face. smh.
She should be embarrassed
She's talking about walking with a pen and paper...theyre in a restaurant, what do they take orders with? I use to work in a restaurant and would come across guests with a variety of disabilities, it just takes patience, attention and listening. It's actually not that hard. And usually if the guests needs to have a helper they will.
Venice Kelly yeah good point I’ve literally never seen a waiter without a pen and paper or at the very least without some sort of tablet that they can place orders on.

That one old lady was so hateful I'm glad she got what she deserved LOL what an embarrassing situation
Best part, the cross hanging out for all to see. She probably likes to present herself to others as compassionate and inclusive and full of love too but judging from this she is pretty far from that.
@@SubjagatorI’m surprised she didn’t spontaneously burst into flames. Oh…and taking Go.d’s name in vain four times….tsk tsk tsk….
Y’all sound empty and miserable she’s right she didn’t say it Rudely and was empathetic toward the waiter although he was being a jerk, but what did that have to do with her? She was staying in her lane and helping both sides clearly if she was as evil she would have took the pen back and started talking about him badly not everyone drips in tears from these situations she did ok with whatever emotional regulation she had. not my taste but she didn’t insult him and that’s good enough Calling someone out for not being prepared isn’t a bad thing he could write things down too.

Some restaurants have switched to tablets, which can be used to communicate as well so if a waiter has a tablet and prefers to read of that then give the customer the tablet
some restraunts require you to memorize orders when your busy dont have time to write.

i love that they actually hired a deaf actor to play a deaf character and had a deaf person backstage to weigh in. love how inclusive this is
They often hire people who are affected by the situations in real life. Like real queer people, real disabled people etc
Oh. That's why this channel hasn't made a video like this with autistic people. No one wants to hire autistics for anything. No one wants anything to do with us. Figures.
Deaf guy backstage is in the Dan and Shay “Tequila” music video

That lady with gray hair she was rude! "Be prepared" Seriously ? 😑😑
Sadly I think it's a generational thing. Just like older people are often clueless about modern technology (which she also seemed to be, LOL), some are also ignorant and less sensitive about special needs.
She might've grown up - or worse, been raised - with the perception that deaf people are somehow mentally challenged. I'm not defending or making excuses for her behavior, but trust me, she's not the only senior out there who would have that reaction.
My late father was born left-handed and grew up in the 1940s and, believe it or not, his teachers in school tried to force him to write right-handed ! Why? Because left was considered "evil". INSANE by today's standards, but true. 😫
It gave him ambidextrous ability to a degree, but when he went back to writing fully lefty, his penmanship was degraded.
The world was a much more ignorant place only a couple generations ago...

Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo
I had a deaf customer who was a regular back when I worked at ALDI. She would use her phone if she ever needed help but it was few and far between (I imagine because she didn’t want to be a “bother”)and it just didn’t sit right with me. I spent months learning extensive sign language both from videos, classes, and people I met through those resources so that I was as conversational in my ASL as I could be. The way her face lit up the day she walked in and I signed a simple “hello” will stay with me forever, it only got better when I started asking about her day and stopped several times to make small talk about groceries and the weather. After that we conversed every time she came in. By far the most useful skill I’ve learned as an adult. Communication should never have such easy to break barriers left untouched.
As an interpreter for the Deaf, I THANK YOU for learning & expanding your knowledge & your heart. Continue to learn ASL. You’d be surprised how handy it comes in.
Aww that's awesome I'm glad you made that connection with her and took the time to learn sign language for her. I know this guys an actor and he's just asking but I kept thinking to myself "he needs to learn manners and how to talk to people like that" I wish I found the time to learn sign language because you never know when someone could be deaf or not and cool name

The first woman, LOVED HER!! “WE ALL ARE BUSY, BOO HOO”
same! She was awesome!
I don't know. I'm a bit ambivalent. Lovely to see her engagement and she does all the right things. Apart from... As a professor of communication skills, she's not... she should take some classes in that. Had she not brought it up as an argument against the "server" (actor/"server") I couldn't have cared less. Had she mentioned that was her job, after the reveal, I would have thought she was a great professor. But as she brought it up the way she did, that's not a good way to communicate with people. I don't think anyone has to tell her why, considering that she's a professor in communication.
I hated her.. she was too full of herself
Fuck that lady
Fr tho what a queen
7:59 "You should be prepared for this." What about the "waiter" who didn't have a pen???
Yeah, and what about the waiter who’s actual job is to take orders? She told the waiter that it’s “not his job” when that’s exactly what a waiter is supposed to do. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the standard, “I tell you and you write it down” form, but even if a deaf person is pointing to a dish then it still is the waiters job to write it down. That old lady got on my nerves saying it’s not his job acting as if it takes up so much time to read the name of a food.

I forgot to say this in my og comment but I have cochlear implants and not all deaf people can afford cochlear implants so to me knowing that deaf people get disrespected breaks my heart
I think sign language definitely needs to be learned in school. I have been teaching myself for years .
@@KirbyPoyo413 I too have cochlear implants. My surgery went wrong because the surgeon didn’t see there was liquid pools above my cochleas that splashed down on them which resulted in being deaf but hearing with cochlear implants. I would hate if I ever took off my implants and people were this way to me in a restaurant. I would love to try this out someday..and see how humane people really are.
I been hard of hearing since the day i was born so i wear hearing aids. But if I can't hear someone, I either turn up my hearing aids or say pardon me can you repeat that? I also sometimes point to my ears so the server/waiter can see that I have hearing aids on. I can also lip read really well. I just wish some people would treat us normally as we would treat them. It shocks me just how rude the world really is.
I don't call it a disability just a bit of a challenge. All that's needed it patience, understanding and TLC. When I was in middle school I helped with children who had special needs. Nothing wrong with them the just had stuff going on and I now have seven children n five have special needs n stuff going on. I've really learned patience and TLC goes a long way

Yessss I noticed that too it’s amazing
My mom is deaf-blind (not 100%, but this is the easiest way to explain it) and because I'm so accustomed to how she speaks and communicated without FSL, I do a lot of things deaf people do.
Like I lipread, I feel the need to have face-to-face contact with the person speaking and I try to be clear when needed. It also helps me concentrate.
I do understand why you should look at the person getting interpreted, but we shouldn't immediatly say someone doing something in an un-preferred way is doing something very very harmfull. They might have their own actual reason as to why they look at the interpreted. But I do believe most people are unknowing and just don't even pay attention to it.
So true. Many years ago a lady in a wheelchair came to my till and I without even realising started talking to her through her friend who was helping her. Her friend said to not do that. That lesson was enough for me to realise how wrong it was.
@@jok2042 That's an important point, and thank you for making it. My Mom contracted polio when she was 2 (back in 1940). She lost the use of her right leg, and has walked with a brace for as long as I've been alive. (When people call her "disabled," I tell them that her professional success was enough to put me through Harvard, so f*** off.) My Mom has a mobility impairment. This does not mean that I automatically know how to interact with someone who is, for example, Deaf or blind. (And I'm one of the -- dozens of -- people who wrote the Americans With Disabilities Act.) I learned a lot getting that done -- but, wow, did I make mistakes along the way or what? I did learn how to do that -- but it was my Mom being who she is that made me realize I needed to figure that out.

I like the fact they got deaf actors to do this, makes it 1000 times better because it's not just a guy pretending to have a disability

Weirdly they had a guy with a real brain injury from a car accident play a war veteran 🤔
@@betenoire1145 it’s kind of similar
@@betenoire1145 They had a similar enough injury type, so the actor was able to potray the role correctly.
@@marialindell9874 but why did he have to play a veteran. Car accidents are more common, relatable.
The last guy was so strong and protective, but also sensitive and had a big heart. ❤
I had to take an order of a deaf person before. He let me know he was deaf. He showed me his order on his phone. When it came to asking him what he wanted to drink. I asked by grabbing a cup and pointing to the different drinks and he picked one. It was as simple as that and he got the food out. It’s not that hard to take the order of someone who is deaf even if you don’t understand sign language .
I work in Retail. Had a customer show me his phone looking for shaving lotion of some kind. We didn't carry it. I googled it on my phone to show him where he could find it. Always talk to their face. Talk normal. Many deaf people can read lips.
Important words I know, chocolate, coffee(very important words for me), mom, dad, boy, girl, pink(because if you do it wrong it's penis), bull $hi7(because sometimes you have to call someone out), and church.
@@beckah119 I did talk to his face. That’s when he told me he was deaf by using sign language. I understood that much

Poor actors who are playing the villain. They get berated everytime. They might just be acting, but damn it still gets to you a bit y'know
One guy got beat up
Misaka Rie I know I bet it can be emotionally draining for them, having people be so angry with them.🙈
But hey that’s their talent and a lot of them are good at it!
If people hate or get mad to villains then that means those villains are really good actors, there was once an actor he was playing as villain, and a random guy punched him because he hates him and also because he's a villain, but that actor didn't fight with him, actor said to cameramans " I'm really happy because people hates me" and that means he's so good at acting as villain.

@@wariswrong4920 Obvious, yeah sure buddy, everything is obvious when you are watching it on youtube and you already know it is a setup.
@@LuManKrix - Point taken, unless you believe, for instance, Trump supporters are racist because that's supposed to be still a thing. We're talking about credulity here. Someone so far over the line of normal behavior has to be suspected of pulling a prank. Conservatives might be more inclined to say "Are you for real?" So many people on this show keep believing an actor was a bad person afterwards. They're clearly unable to admit to themselves that they didn't just experience a moment where they proved themselves morally superior to someone else. They need to feel there's evil all around
@@wariswrong4920 No I dont think that Trump supporters are racist. And I have seen like 100 of these "WWYD" and I never saw a person still believing that the actor was a bad person afterwards, they are in shock, they cry, they are stressed etc. but they never keep swearing at the person or something like that, like I said Ive seen a lot of these videos and I have NEVER seen a person still thinking the actor is a bad person afterwards.
War Is Wrong I don’t thinks it’s a setup though. I feel like the sympathy was genuine I mean two people Shed some tears, you can’t act some of those emotions out I don’t know that’s just my opinion. I know some channels that are actually fake but this seems so real lol
I always love how the managers are set in these situations. The customer is complaining about something and the manager always absolute does not care. Very indicative of reality.

I love that you still hired a deaf actor when you usually rely on earpieces. Shows a lot of character when it would have been an easy out to hire someone who isn’t deaf. Love that
they usually tend to hire actors that fit the character (e.g. they hire lesbian actors for a lesbian scenario, and they’ve hired a blind person for a scenario involving a blind man). it’s lovely, and it’s amazing that they do it :)
Not only that but they hired a hot deaf actor 😅

Ok but she did state a point they should have pen and paper or phone but if they don't people still have to be nice and patient! Usually people have phones or somewhere to write so they and others don't have a hard time!
