I’ve put the sunglasses on in the store and I just walk around with that aura of I’m the Terminator, don’t mess with me. The anxiety of people being rude about stuff sucks. They think I’m doing whatever b/c I’m a weirdo but I’m just trying to manage my stress. I did get some blue light canceling glasses and those made a huge difference in my anxiety. One of my eye balls had been twitching for about two years off and on and it stoped twitching, so bonus.
I'm struggling with the same thing. My wonderful therapist is great about suggesting practical solutions to help me reduce sensory overload, but I often find myself too anxious to try them. I don't want to stand out or draw any more attention to myself. Plus my ears hurt if I wear over-the-ear headphones or in-the-ear plugs too long, so it's trading out one sensory difficulty for another. Its distressing if I start out with ear plugs but have to take the out halfway through the day cause my ears hurt. I have to suddenly deal with both loud noises and hurting ears, and the transition to that is really hard for me so I'd rather just deal with one consistent thing all day. But just because I choose the least distressing scenario doesn't make all my anxieties and overwhelm go away. It's a struggle.
Yup! I'm lucky since I don't feel anxious wearing my headphones. I figure people just think I'm listening to a bangin tune. Feel a bit silly wearing sunglasses indoors
I've been wearing sunnies since I was a kid and I love it, supermarket (and yes, people do stare) and all. But noise isa bigger issue. I have watch tv with the remote in my hand so I can mute noises, like door knocks, which frighten me like hell. Thanks, as always, Dana.
I heartily recommend nuraphones! They're pretty decent noise cancelling headphones, that you can also turn on a 'social mode' with, by tapping one of the buttons on the side. I find the 'social mode' actually takes the edge off in the real world whilst still being able to hear, and then if you are struggling you can completely go into noise cancelling with a tap of a button. Best of both worlds! :) I use them on London tubes for work - or used to before the world ended in 2020. (As a side note, they're also really great sounding for music, which is sort of their main selling point.)
