    Opals are a mixture of silica and water. Water sinks in the ground and comes in contact with silica in sandstones. The gel-like mixture is then hardened to an opal over a very long time and it’s a very delicate process. Even the smallest movements/shake in the ground show effect in the later appearance of the hardened opal. There are different types of opals like boulder opals, white opals (like yours) and the very expensive black opals. Australia is very famous for opals. My personal favorite stone and even the reason why i wanted to study.

      Opal is one of my birthstones and honestly I never liked it growing up but now that I’m an adult I actually really like the look of opals. Thanks for the details on how they’re made!

    • @lifeaddict
      @lifeaddict 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends, a lot of opals are formed within wood/ animals that don’t decay, and over millions of years silica and minerals soak into the materials causing opal to form. Eg wood opal. And patterns can be caused by the example scales or twig rings

    Always gotta remember jewelers were making these pieces by hand for decades and decades. True artisans. Now it's all computer this or 3d printed that. Which is great for so many reasons. The computer design is top level now but these jewelers were cutting the gems in the old ways with real jewelers carving waxes and hand-crafting complex gold, diamond and gemstone pieces

      th-cam.com/video/M6VG_4pZrwc/w-d-xo.html people like me and this man spend over five hours sculpting a design like this using 3D technology then print it out and cast it. You'd be insane to tell me that there isn't the same level of artistry put into this

    • @nickdavinci2196
      @nickdavinci2196 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@solisinvictus4238 lmaoooo why u so bothered? You sound like a kid that didnt get his way. I never ever said cad or 3d printing is bad. Never. I use it more and more and love how detailed and precise you can get. However they did not have that technology back then so don't take away from the skill it took to make those items. I spent 10 years carving waxes for many jewelry stores in South Texas. 22 jewelry stores I carved waxes for. It's a skill that truly takes patience, discipline and talent and I was nowhere near the level of some of these Cartier designers. Alot of these older jewelry designers are truly amazed skilled artists that truly made museum pieces by hand.

      @@nickdavinci2196 I apologize, sorry I wasn't trying to dirty delete I didn't realize you saw before. I just reread your post for the third time in a row and realize that you were not putting down Cad. But I don't understand what you mean a kid who didn't get their way? What would be my way in this Case? And yeah I'm bothered by it because I keep on hearing this rhetoric over and over again directed at various different digital artist. And it very upsetting to be pehw pehwed upon just for using new tools. As if the only value of art is how mush the artist suffered or something. Anyways so it was just a reaction to constantly seeing comments with that sentiment all the time. And trust me 3D sculpting takes patience as well it's not all smooth sailing. As I have 4 days and upwards working on a 3D sculpted piece

    • @StatueCollecting
      @StatueCollecting 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@solisinvictus4238 5 hours is actually way to fast for creating a masterpiece. Many artist spend months on zbrush creating a piece. You would be insane to think people without technology weren't on another level than most everyone in this modern era. I'd like to see someone chisel a statue out of marble in this modern era to perfection like they did back in the day with no computers no CAD software nothing but their hands and whatever primitive tools they had.

    • @solisinvictus4238
      @solisinvictus4238 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StatueCollecting and the funny thing is... it wouldn't make it anymore valuable, are you going to spend more money on a marble sculpture because it was carved with sticks and stones? or the same sculpt made with the assistance of a sanding belt at a reasonable price (note I did not say cheap). the reason that stuff was remarkable to the folks of that era was because not only was it skillful but for the time it was all state of the art. the reason why it is valuable to us now, is not only due to the fact that it has an aesthetic that we don't often see now (note I did not downplay the CRAFTMANSHIP of todays artist)but also because it is a time capsule. Art is not about the tools (that some seem to be so hung up upon) it is about the artist and the moment that they Immortalize with their craft. By the way... 5+ hours is about the time that would take to do "traditionally" with wax. did you think it just stopped at the computer? NO. it still has to be cast and finished and welded with tools that are still quite ancient, surprisingly not THAT much has changed... except for the sculpting on the software and a laser welder (which is still rare to see in a studio) . Also, there are still folks using "trad" methods do this day to carve marble and wax and such if you want to look you will find them....why are there so few? is it because we as artist are lazy? NO. because when someone commissions a piece from us they dont wanna hear some ish about it taking so long because we want to roleplay middle earth and how that makes us better than everyone else. its fun to do as a personal project though, but not practical or necessary. Do I carve in wax? Yes. Do I use Zbrush/cad to pull of things in my imagination that would have been almost damn-near impossible with wax? Of course! why would I not? (if I did it in wax no one would know the difference anyway, result is the same and wouldn't be able to charge more). Yes It is amazing that they did all of this without sophisticated tools and guess what, they are still being used today (I should know... I have used them). and I also have used zbrush. And you know what a lot of my classmates are intimidated by the software opting for trad methods... going to show, that there is def skill in using said tool. Yeah that guy I shared only makes it look easy

    Hey Brother!!! First off, i just wanted to say how much of a fan i am of your work, not only as a jeweler and as an entrepeneur, but also s a human being in general. You are truly a great and excellent person and if there were more people in the world like you, i strongly feel that this world would be a MUCH better place. You struggled and came from the bottom and worked your ass off and ended up coming out on top, but as youve said in multiple videos, people think its all just lay back and let the money come in and spend the cash and get cars, females, and all this other stuff. But you show the behind the scenes and show people how it truly is and how hard you and all your staff truly work to bring the highest quality products to the consumers and you do it with such a level of elegance and finesse that nobody can compete. I commented roughly this same thing on another one o your videos from about a year ago where you gave 70 ounces of silver out who sowed you love and seeing you do that, as well as throwing money in the streets and helping people out in general gave me a completely different level of respect for you. I literally heard about you and your channel last night and i kid you not, i spent 5 or 6 hours looking through your videos and watching what you do because of how awesome of a human being you are and how much you put back into the community, which is rare for somebody who got money along the way. Most people who come up on success end up hoarding their shit and holding it close to their chest like they can take it with them when they die, but not you sir!!! And for that, i want to let you and everybody else whos reading this comment know how amazing of a person you are. Ive never met you, never shopped at your store, hell ive never even been to New York!! Im from the Chicagoland area, however when i heard about you i had to check you out on youtube for myself. I truly hope this comment gets to you directly (i know that you have staff workers that comb through this and i hope that whatever staff worker is looking at this will please show the boss man this message, even though im sure you get the same request from others all the time) because you deserve to hear this from someone who hasnt even met you!!! Me and my wife and son are in a hard time financially, but watching you has sparked something in me to push myself harder so that i can come from the bottom to the top like you, and do it humbly as well. Sorry for getting long winded, but i just NEEDED to let you know that what you do is being seen and talked about out here and that you need to keep up what youre doing. Once again youre a great human being and businessman and i hope i get the chance to one day meet you myself so that i can shake the hand of the man that has given me this new positive outlook on life. Keep up the amazing work Brother!!!

    A lot of the special pieces starting at 21:33 are being replicated in mass in Japan utilizing 3D scanners. If you have a Japanese seller of Van Cleef, Cartier, bvlgari, or other collectible brands, there's a 80-20 chance that they're selling indistinguishable replicas that they recreated on a one-to-one scale. They go above and beyond any fly-by-night mom-and-pop jeweler that tries to recreate these one-of-a-kind collectibles. They do xrf testing on the gold and platinum alloys of the original and they match it one-to-one. They also do a final scan of their replicated and finished piece s, and then they compare it with a scan of the original if there's any deviation, even .05% they pop off all the stones, melt it down again until they have a 1to1 exact match with less than .03 percent deviation. They also zoom in with a 20x to make sure all the special markings are present. You might ask: why do they go through so much trouble, because they can replicate these fine collectibles for one-twentieth of their authentic retail value. Careful buyers understand that if there's no paperwork to establish Provenance
    , you should only buy it for the gold and gem value.
