I’m looking to buy my first own action camera, I will mainly use it for underwater videography, framing corals and fishes. Would you recommened the action 5 pro or the ace pro 2? I am torn because from the clips, sometimes I prefer the dji but sometimes the insta looks better 😂
I have been watching these comparison videos trying to decide. Costco has a gopro13 bundle on sale for $339 so I figured that was a good deal, but the action 5 seems to be the winner for most. I’m not a TH-camr or anything.. just a mom who wants to film some videos when we go on our cruise next May. Something I don’t have to stress about if my daughters want to film at the beach or go snorkeling with.
TBH, they all look good, literally everyone will perform better then the other in certain situations and environment and not one does good in ALL those environments. At the end of the day, it's what looks best to the user and how they will be using their camera. For me, I shoot a lot in low light and night so my choices would be Action 5 Pro and Ace Pro but that's me. ;) Great video as usual David!
I have to say after pausing and watching and listening to this whole video to be honest the GoPro has the best picture and the Ace Pro 2 has the best sound in windy conditions. But in regular conditions they all do good on sound. In low light the insta360 does the best. The sad part for the Action 5 is the fact that your facial hair was even blurred and mostly non existent. My final conclusion is for reality shots the GoPro wins for detail but in lowlight and windy conditions the Insta360 is better. It’s a repeat of last year. DJI gets left behind again and the best of both scenarios is for vacation take the GoPro 13 and the Ace Pro 2. I use them all and I still have a DJI Action 5 that hasn’t even been opened yet and it will probably be exchanged for another insta360 since I already have extra GoPros. Great review.
It looks like Insta360 Ace Pro 2 has less sharpening compared to the other cameras that's why it looks a touch soft, but it also looks more natural because of that. Also in low light, IMHO Ace Pro 2 looks best
Don't see photo tests between models, I believe most of the action cam owners use them for video and not photos, but I like them for photos as well. Tested the Osmo Action 5 in photo mode and realized that the Auto mode is much different from the first model DJI released. I used Osmo Action 1 for snorkeling, taking photos underwater and above the water and leaving the camera in Auto was good enough to manage with different light conditions. Now, you have to adjust the aperture manually in almost all the scenarios. Besides that DJI lost the interval photos, where you can take a photo every 1 second for example, now only with hyperlapse only but you don't see the timer between photos... Would like to see some photo tests as well
Gopro has definitely the nicest colours over all, especially skin tones plus it's footage looks most natural but good. The worst is the insta - totally pinkish and soft. DJI is a mixed bag. Quite often it looks fake and over-sharpened with again pink ish tones. After dark it's of course the game over for gopro. I wonder how the A5 would compare to modern mobile phones in that environment.
I personally will get the Action 5 Pro. Looks better in most shots (in my opinion) and is smaller, more compact and lighter, and I don’t need all the fancy features the other cameras have. I just need a small and light one for the action stuff I do.
I have the ace pro 1 and ace pro 2 still looks like it has the same problem of not looking natural. It looks like it has filters on its regular footage. I switched to dji action 5 pro and im far happier with the camera.
Usually, in these comparisons, I’ve preferred the GoPro footage. But, in these examples, I prefer the DJIs. Still not liking that weird effect around the trees though
Osmo 5 is better in every way, also audio and I think it could also improve with dlog-m. Thanks for this real life video it helped a lot in my decision.
I liked the Insta 360 Ace Pro 2 footage. The underwater was way better than the other 2, and the low light marginally better than the DJI. In daylight, the colours of the Insta were more lifelike, and at times, the DJI made Davids face look almost cartoon like. But it is close between those two and I think if you bought either one you would be happy.... Unfortunately, GoPro is lagging behind quite a bit and not really competing in this league at the moment.
I have the action 5 pro, I’m glad I ignored all the noise/hype of flip screen and low light stuff. DJI is the new king for action cams (no gimmicks) because of the image beauty, go pro is dead for now. I can’t wait for the DJI mirrorless camera release.
Thanks for the side-by-side footage. I think the Ace Pro 2 has a bit too much contrast and the Action 5 Pro looks like it could use a bit more contrast. I'm not even bothering with the GoPro because I'm done with them and looking to get out of that ecosystem. I'm leaning towards the Action 5 Pro over the Ace Pro 2 primarily because of size/weight (I mount camera to my helmet when motorcycling) but I _really_ don't like the obnoxious lens fare on the DJI cam. It just look weird compared to a more natural bokeh you get from other cameras.
I own the Osmo action 4..not pro. Lol. The Ace pro 2 is definitely muffled. The OA5 is definitely clearer audio. The hero 13 definitely has more wind and background noise. Just wondering why the other 2 cameras are so green underwater and the OA5 looks more natural 🤔. I'm a dji fan for sure. Battery life? And quick charging on the DJI is the best.
Insta360 and DJI ones are pretty impressive. GoPro seems to be overly exposed. Not sure what to get to my FPV journey but dji and insta360 has my attention
I like the dji footage here in this comparison video. but overall, will still get insta360, as the wind muff, bigger screen, and most importantly the software creativity and various modes availability...
I typically hold off on new releases but the Ace Pro 2's gimmicks got me this time lol. Bought it this weekend and as a motorcycle rider I think I was expecting too much from the Ace Pro 2's wind muff attachment. Unless I'm doing something wrong, my little testing seems to have it working great around 20mph and down. Past that its still unusable...but probably still an improvement. Normal, everyday wind it's awesome though! Coming from an GP7, I'm loving the night time video that the Ace2 & Action5 are putting out. Sadly GoPro just seems to be falling off in that aspect. Hate to see it. As for this video...man, the Action5 almost seems like the winner in general imo. All great cameras but some of the Ace2 footage looks blurry for some reason. I might have to reconsider my purchase
Action 5 did it best for me, better colors better underwater look and face exposure, The Gopro and ace pro 2 look too green underwater, the also were bad in the wind test. Gopro in low light is garbage and the Ace pro face color is very orange. Dji for the win.
Well I've always used GoPro but over all I'm going with the Ace Pro. I liked the DJI but I think it over compensated the colors a bit. The Ace Pro was more natural.
DJI gives an unreal color to be honest, the more I look at it the more I like the acepro2. the moment i realized all 3 cameras are in low sharpness setting, dji is a nogo for me
how come most of the people are saying action 5 pro is ahead or good?? did you guys even notice the cloud behind David? literally no definition! ACE PRO 2 wins it for me!
I agree. They will. The ace pro 1 had this problem when it first launched. For now, in Dlog, it’s completely gone. I have one, and it’s only there sometimes.
Yeah, would definitely be nice to be able to control how much of that HDR look is brought into each scene. The Action 5 Pro and Ace Pro 2 have the same sensors, but different color algorithms and processors
Struggle to decide between Ace and Osmo. Application would be snorcling, diving, mountainbike and family vacation. Also love to make time lapses and panoramas. Ace2 has this startrail feature. Osmo the deepth sensor. Is any of the two features worth it?
The ace pro 2 is an impressive camera overall especially with all its integration into other devices but I think it suffers from the same thing as GoPro in terms of white balance. Would be nice to see what camera is actually the way it looked when you do a review of the footage but I’m betting the GoPro and ace 2 were too yellow underwater and the ace 2 too warm are night, the light bulbs looked yellow and people looked too warm is my bet. Ace pro 3 if they add a color temp sensor will be a bigger improvement than the audio muffler, besides I’ve already found DJI 3-5 too warm have really impressive audio.
I record while snorkeling every time we go to Hawai'i, and the Action 5 is the color I look to grade to... most often unsuccessfully. The problem is that colors change drastically depending on water clarity, depth, and cloud cover above. That means keyframing and... ugh! Any Hoo... Action 5 nails it, to my eyes. I'll trade you 2 DJI Action OGs (and accessories) for a 5. I'm local, and heading to Maui in January.
The footage on the ace pro 2 is really soft. is there a reason for that? I think the DJI action 5 has much too strong of an HDR look that makes it look like smartphone footage. I like the sharpness and colours on the gopro but the dynamic range is clearly one step down from the other two. It's hard to pick a winner honestly. I definitely dont like the action 5. If the ace pro footage wasnt so soft, I would pick that as the winner I guess
I agree that Ace Pro 2 looks surprisingly soft. I am not seeing that in other reviews. The Action 5 looks overly sharpened and a bit HDRish. I am seeing that in other reviews. The GoPro has nothing compelling. Probably with a bit of tweaking to the settings, either the Ace Pro 2 or the Action 5 would be excellent. I like the 2x zoom in 4K with no resolution loss on the Ace Pro 2. I like the smaller size of the Action 5. Tough choice...
Skin tones looked best on GoPro... The other cameras had better blue sky rand but poor skin tone . I care about the image quality on a person... I don't record at night like most people... I may stay with gopro
I would love to see a bluetooth audio comparison as I am doing mostly motovlogging. I have Ace Pro 1 and it struggles with DJI Mic 2. I wonder if it is the same with Ace Pro 2. Also having wider POV is a must for me
Why does the Ace Pro and Go Pro seem to have difficulty focusing on the subject?? The image is soft for my liking. Action Pro was the best for everything except when it is handling the sky, I dont know why it makes the sky just a blob of blue or grey with no details.
Loving how AP2 handles the sky, way more details. Action5 makes the clouds look all flat and gray, with no highlights or shadows. Just doesn’t feel real, ya know?
Each camera has it's place...but the place where the GoPro is the best option is rapidly diminishing. The DJI Action 5 Pro is in dire need of a white balance algorithm update. When in the shade, the image skews very cool and looks ugly and unnatural. The shadows also look a little too boosted sometimes and the image doesn't look natural sometimes, but I imagine this could be pretty easily fixed in post...or just shoot it in LOG and the image usually looks pretty fantastic and not artificial. (not always ideal for action cameras) Ace Pro consistently looks the most natural and pleasing to my eyes...but we STILL have a major focus issue - you're not in focus for a lot of shots. The problem here is that I don't think there's an attachment AcePro can create that would fix this...I could be wrong, but it's very clearly not focusing very close. Combine that with the awful looking and soft LOG footage, the AcePro has a more limited use in my eyes. The GoPro looks and sounds the worst in every single comparison shot - no surprise at all. Very sad they don't know how to make a camera better than the GoPro HERO 10.
Action 5 is overall the best camera. It’s the most versatile and the best bang for buck also has the best battery life. Go pro is cooked they can’t keep up anymore. Ace pro 2 is just over baked and sharpened footage.
With GoPro when you have the media mod on there's a click sound recorded when you end the video, that's the sound of pressing the record button, a major design flaw no one talks about. I wonder if action pro has the same issue?
Morning David. Thanks for the comparison of the 3 cameras. I actually think it was only between two (Insta360 and DJI). Did you use the underwater settings on the Ace pro and the DJI during the dives? The colors looked very different. Which was closest to what you saw? The footage of the Ace Pro looks very blurry, not what I have seen in other comparisons. No details in the trees in the background. Can you explain this?
skin colour - gopro (most of the time) sky colour - gopro (often more natural) under water - dji (bit too dark though) audio - insta or dji low light - gopro (just kidding😂 like dji the most)
I definitely wanted to like the GoPro because I have so much GoPro stuff already. But they hit Rock bottom. Do I wait for the 14 and see what they do or just go DJI
Hi David, I would be curious to see a comparison of underwater footage after color correction. Obviously the color temperature sensor of the action 5 does a great job. But how does it look after correction. Can gopro compensate?
I bought the GoPro this year, first one I’d had since the 7, was disappointed when it fell from my pocket and destroyed the back screen. I feel like they used to be made more durable, since it’s an action camera. I had the Best Buy insurance and just swapped it out for a new one, but still a bummer.
The focus distance of the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 looks like its still a bit of a problem compared to the other two. The DJI looks great except for thay over processed HDR look that messes up the look of the sky. I hope a firmware update fixes that or that theyd offer an on and off toggle.
Notably, the GoPro is the only one that properly exposed your eyes through the mask underwater. This could be due to the Local Tone Mapping system it uses in addition to the Global Tone Mapping. Although unfortunately the Local Tone Mapping does have a flip side effect of making facial skin look terrible in good sunlight! It can be turned off using Labs though, while keeping the Global Tone Mapping on, though it might not be so good with the underwater mask scenario. With the Ace Pro 2, did you use the underwater mode?
Its very subjective. You can tweak colors and other image settings in post to look exactly like one another. That sea turtle looked best on ace pro, but guess what? A bit of contrast and blacks and voila, you have the same from the other two. As long as the differences are that minor, it doesnt matter. What matters most is which company has the most stable firmware/apps and best customer support. Thats the test i wanna see 😮
Were you in log mode for the cameras or the automatic/standard mode? I feel like you color graded and ace pro 2 has a bug where it comes out blurry. If not, you convinced me to get the action 5 pro
The DJI Action 5 is the winner. It look more sharp, the audio is clear and the video quality is better. Gopro lose on all aspect. Ace pro 2 even if on some footage it has a little bit more of dynamic range, the ace pro 2 look blurry and not sharp at all. My eyes cannot appreciate the video on the ace pro 2 and im more naturely attracted by the Action 5. Even for the audio DJI sound more clear and have good performance in windy situation. If you had a wind guard on the action 5 it will have I'm sure better performance than the ace pro2. Of course in low light, we can see that the ace pro 2 have a little advantage but the Action 5 is not so far behind. Maybe color grading could optimize the Action 5 but it's not very complicated
All footage and audio is straight out of camera with sharpness set to LOW and hasn’t been color corrected or graded. Let me know your thoughts!
Question - For the underwater shots, which one was true-to-life compared to what you actually saw? It seems DJI has a very different interpretation of what the colours down there should look like compared to the other two cameras.
One question, why the Ace Pro 2 is so blurry? It was not like that on your earlier video. Sharpness turned all the way down?
Why is the Ace pro 2 so blurry as compared to the Action. Looks like a lot of details are lost on the Ace pro 2.

GoPro 13 all day for me with the insta 360x4 also! 🎒
I prefer the GoPro Hero 13 look . I have a DJI Action 5 camera too, but for me, the GoPro produces nicer video when mounted on an FPV drone.
Great video, thank you David. But I’m confused 😁 I like different cameras’ performance in different scenarios 🤷♂️
Wow the color recreation of ACe Pro 2 is amazing. So sad that Go Pro is not a King anymore! I hope they wont faded out soon :(
Usually, in these comparisons, I’ve preferred the GoPro footage.
Ace Pro 2 overall , Action 5 pro is ok but don’t like these trumpet light flares at night shoots, AP2 is doing a better job there.
Im really liking the Insta360. Looks the best to me. Just my 2 cents
I liked the vlog style video.
ACTION 5 For game, set and match
Osmo Action 5 looks the worst. The clouds look weird. I think DJI should give a toggle switch to turn off HDR.
I agree. They will. The ace pro 1 had this problem when it first launched. For now, in Dlog, it’s completely gone. I have one, and it’s only there sometimes.
totally agree
Yeah, would definitely be nice to be able to control how much of that HDR look is brought into each scene. The Action 5 Pro and Ace Pro 2 have the same sensors, but different color algorithms and processors
Except underwater, where the Osmo Action 5 looks clearly the best.
@@DavidManningvlog yet I see some glowy HDR happening in both.
3:39 Insta looks closer to what you'd actually see and doesn't overexposes faces or lose details 👍🏻
Thanks for the comparison! :) Is it just me or do the clouds look much more natural on the Insta than on the dji 5??
Struggle to decide between Ace and Osmo. Application would be snorcling, diving, mountainbike and family vacation. Also love to make time lapses and panoramas.
Ace2 has this startrail feature. Osmo the deepth sensor.
Is any of the two features worth it?
The background looks better on the Ace Pro 2. I wonder which one is best for landscape shots from an FPV drone though.
Dji asmo action 5 pro all day every day 🙌 🎉🎉
AP2✅
Then it would be better if edited.
Action 5 pro actually looks good in this comparison.
Action 5 the best footage
Loving how AP2 handles the sky, way more details. Action5 makes the clouds look all flat and gray, with no highlights or shadows. Just doesn’t feel real, ya know?
Big mistake again for Insta360 not to offer 5.3K 60fps resolution
DJI osmo action 5 !
(not always ideal for action cameras)
Ace Pro consistently looks the most natural and pleasing to my eyes...but we STILL have a major focus issue - you're not in focus for a lot of shots.
Insta Color looks the best, But the image is blurry (er) compared to Action 5 (Except in Low Lights, they look roughly the same)
that's it... switching to DJI 5... thank you!
Can you explain this?
skin colour - gopro (most of the time)
sky colour - gopro (often more natural)
under water - dji (bit too dark though)
audio - insta or dji
low light - gopro (just kidding😂 like dji the most)
I definitely wanted to like the GoPro because I have so much GoPro stuff already. But they hit Rock bottom. Do I wait for the 14 and see what they do or just go DJI
Hi David,
I would be curious to see a comparison of underwater footage after color correction.
Obviously the color temperature sensor of the action 5 does a great job.
But how does it look after correction. Can gopro compensate?
DJI Action 5's colors and lighting are more natural and realistic
The ace pro 2 colors were too heavy
The action 5 pro was best overall
I bought the GoPro this year, first one I’d had since the 7, was disappointed when it fell from my pocket and destroyed the back screen. I feel like they used to be made more durable, since it’s an action camera. I had the Best Buy insurance and just swapped it out for a new one, but still a bummer.
GoPro Go Home Action 5 focusing is best and some times Ace Pro does look better
incredible but the gopro with a smaller sensor the image is very good. everything is clearer for example your beard 0:19 and other things
I pulsed this video at 4K here and there about 10 times. Almost every time Action 5 Pro gave the most sharp image.
Dji for the win next Insta360
The focus distance of the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 looks like its still a bit of a problem compared to the other two. The DJI looks great except for thay over processed HDR look that messes up the look of the sky. I hope a firmware update fixes that or that theyd offer an on and off toggle.
Gampang saja. Untuk detil yang tajam maka pilihlah DJI Action 5 dan untuk peredam suara yang bising maka pilihlah Insta 360 Acepro 2..
Thats the test i wanna see 😮
You have a beautiful family!
Were you in log mode for the cameras or the automatic/standard mode? I feel like you color graded and ace pro 2 has a bug where it comes out blurry. If not, you convinced me to get the action 5 pro
Zero color grading done in this video. All footage and audio was straight out of camera👍
水下部份 Insta360 Ace Pro 2拍攝的色彩不正常,那應該是Action 5 Pro的顏色,確定沒搞錯?
