    Diving on a ship is no simple task. That of course why we had Dave Foster take the plunge to test out our new gear from www.SmacoDive.com and get some video of the Props and Rudders.
    The rest of us are continuing work on the forward deck with a limited amount of time to complete the project and move on to the next.

    You have a good crew working there! Saw the underwatersurvey, the holes in the rudder are for lifting them in place when removed for bearing jobs etc.
    Eventhough the ship is in sweet water you need sacrificial anodes, in your case aluminium anodes, not zink. Put aluminiumbars hanging from a steelwire connected to the hull on the sides. Will provide a good protection until drydocking.
    You'll need a lot of anodes... take good care of the hull plating!

    Man, you guys've gotta figure out how to improvise some shade when you're working topside. I'm guessing it gets windy out there so pop-up canopies may not work, but at least some tarps and ropes or something. July and August are BRUTAL out there!

      It’s not been as tough as I might have expected, I had wraparound sunglasses out there but didn’t use them mostly. I considered using a much broader hat. Mainly I found it crucial to keep drinking fluids, at the slightest onset of thirst, and be thorough with sunscreen. I think reflections on ocean at coastal spots can be more oppressive. There are also shade areas elsewhere on the decks for lunch and breaks.

    In terms of marine biology, what a beautiful ecosystem that's been established on her hull and propellers.
    In terms of nautical travel, all that stuff probably won't be good for the ship.
    Looks like she could do with some time in drydock to clean off the hull.
    Also, that pool honestly doesn't look all that good. As a pool, I mean. It's so deep and slim, you can't swim anywhere or hang out where your feet are just above the surface. You'd just kinda be floating there. I kinda question the practicality of retaining it as a pool rather than seeing what else it could be. I remember another commenter on a previous video mentioned that it looked more like a cargo hatch. I would do some digging on that.
    This episode is an extreme improvement over the previous episodes. The cinematography and storytelling is getting much better.
    My only hope is that the storytelling remain firmly rooted in reality. I don't know if that book Grid found is real or a plant, and the fact that I'm questioning it at all is not good.
    It's specifically because he brought up ghosts and funky stuff happening to people on the ship. That feels like a plant for a bit. Plus, we never saw the writing in the book.
    I don't know, maybe I'm being too cynical, but it doesn't feel quite right for me.
    The ship's starting to shape up! Glad to see it, can't wait for more.

    • @shanemausome262
      @shanemausome262 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are being too cynical. I don’t think Grid mentions ghosts at all. He doesn’t believe in them. This channel has never talked about ghosts from my experience. There are some stories, but I don’t believe they have ever been told on this channel, so when you say he mentions ghosts, I don’t know what you are talking about. Please explain. He just found this journal and read from it, that’s it.
      The pool has been a hold as well, it’s just that we don’t have any need for a hold, so the idea is that we will put something in we can utilize on the ship, and since it’s also been a pool, we figured that would be a good choice. We can utilize that and it will look nicer than a bit pit on the bow.
      Thanks for chiming in. Hope you are enjoying the adventure so far. ;-)

    • @TheHylianBatman
      @TheHylianBatman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shanemausome262 Thanks, Shane. That's totally fair for the pool.
      "Ghosts" is a misnomer, I suppose. Just the supernatural things that Grid brings up, it puts me on edge.
      I studied documentary film in college, and it was there I learned that so much in documentaries is staged. Confrontations are forced and situations are made up. It's something professionals do.
      I just fear that Chris is trying to be a professional.
      Let's say, for example, that Chris wants the TH-cam series to have more plot in it. This ship's historical, so what kind of plot can be built off of that? Well, there are many historical structures, including ships, such as the Queen Mary, that have ghost tales. That's something that can be done easily, if you treat it right, and doesn't require much effort to be convincing.
      So Chris decides that now the Aurora has spooky stuff on it to get views and, with it, ad revenue and sponsorship revenue and all that. How does he make that happen?
      Well, Grid's the tough guy on the ship. He's often shown in charge and working hard. I'm sure in reality that everyone works hard, but in the videos, I feel it's mainly Grid we see. And so the viewers would associate Grid with being tough, experienced, and in charge.
      So Chris goes to the store and buys a little notebook and stashes it somewhere. He knows they're working on the pool, so he puts it near there and tells Grid to go down to underneath the pool and find it and read it to the camera.
      This introduces the viewers to the supernatural whatever-it-is on the ship. Why Grid? Because, to the viewers, he's tough, and if it worries him, it should scare everybody. Now, I don't know how Grid was feeling in the clip in this video, because I am not Grid, but I know he seemed to me as if he was just a little freaked out. Not scared, not worried, just on edge.
      There's your introduction for the ghost. In the next episode, find a reason for night work to be done on the ship, and then have spooky stuff happen. The episode after that, spooky stuff happens to a small crew, maybe just one and the camera. The next episode, we see the crawling and the pillow stuff that Grid mentions here. Then there's a seance or something, or maybe it just gets dropped, or maybe it becomes a running bit. I don't know.
      I agree with you. This is an extremely cynical viewpoint. And I really hope it's not true, because I'm watching this series for the ship.
      Honestly, I'm not even convinced it is true, and I just spent a whole paragraph arguing for it!
      I just see the potential that it could be true and I don't want it to be.
      To be completely clear, I'm not accusing Chris or anybody else of doing this. I don't think that this is, for sure, what is happening. I love the Aurora, this channel, and everybody working on both, it is extremely fun.
      That's the only reason I bring it up. This channel brings me joy, so I would hate to see it go down the road that professional documentaries do. I want this channel to stay the way it is, because that's what I enjoy watching.
      Anyways. Thanks for hearing me out. I appreciate that everyone on the crew seems to be on TH-cam as well, it definitely feels very personal. Can't wait for the next episode!

    • @CharlesLangSamuel
      @CharlesLangSamuel ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm thanks for thinking so much about this project. There’s a vocabulary word or two in the notebook that seem unusual, and that’s a reason to think it might be legitimate. Certainly the idea of paranormal would have been in the minds of passengers going back decades, and so it’s plausible that the notebook is legit, and maybe sort of a playful thing done by the passenger. In a tradition of Victorian letter-writing or something. And it’s plausible that supernatural and paranormal things do happen on the ship.

    • @shanemausome262
      @shanemausome262 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If we made changed out mind and made what we plan to be a pool into a hold, what would the use case be? The vessel currently isn’t being utilized as a passenger ship, nor a cargo ship, literally the only use for this space has been a big garbage can for decades. If it were a pool now, we would be able to use the pool for a ton of stuff. There have been ideas for seats at the top, so you could sit in it at the surface.

The very early ones were cast iron and later they were also used as a spare, attached to the deck, mostly. My brother worked at a propellor factory in the Netherlands all his life and I'll ask him if he knows anything about stainless steel propellors. It would be more difficult to cast, I'm sure. Why did you dive without a safety Flag flown from the main Mast or signs telling diver in the water ,to let other boats users know they have to slow down their speed as they pass by till clear of the area. seems a rookie mistake.
    A diver down flag, or scuba flag, is a flag used on the water to indicate that there is a diver below. Two styles of flag are in use. Internationally, the code flag alfa/alpha, which is white and blue, is used to signal that the vessel has a diver down and other vessels should keep well clear at slow speed. In North America it is conventionally red with a white stripe from the upper left corner to the lower right corner.
    As a code signal the International maritime signal flag Alpha .One last thing, Where was your safety line and up top attender. A must .

We are doing the best we can to make this channel as good as we can. We could have added minutes more of the same diving footage but we didn’t want to bore people, and we could have included less footage to make diving more of the video, but a lot of our viewers have expressed a desire to see longer videos.
