I've Bought An Electric Car For Less Than £5k!

- Batteries only last 3 years! Or maybe it's 5 years? Perhaps 7! I get told this every day of the week.
Considering electric cars currently start between £4k to £5k on the used market for the oldest examples, can I find one that's got the same range as it did when it was new?

I have just purchased my first EV last week. It's a 2016 Nissan Leaf Tekna 30KW with 37k on the clock and it is immaculate. Driving it like Miss Daisy gets 103 miles, normal driving 93! Car was advertised for 6.5k, but managed to snap it up for 5.5k. Battery manager already updated and the last elderly owner (5 years) has had parking sensors fitted front and rear. The seller has been told she can't drive due to an eye problem and just wanted it gone. Between 2021-22 it did zero miles between MOTs! I could not be happier with my first EV.......so far.
Not trying to be rude , but 12 months and zero miles between MOT’s , did you try to check or research for previous accidents and repairs ? Good luck with the car🤙🏾
@@LittleJoshVarela Did all checks (paid for) - I had an MR2 I sold last year with 0 miles between 12 years. Car is perfect and running fine.
@@Dangerous_Brian that’s fantastic, had a problem with one Nissan leaf ,same background story, done my research and found photos of that same car in a garage I’m Park Royal all destroyed, had to back away from the deal 🤙🏾
@@LittleJoshVarela Little old lady had it past 5 years and used it very little. During Covid she parked it on the drive and never went out. Now she has an eye problem and the Dr. has told her not to drive for at least a year. All checks came back good, 3 full services in the past 5 years. All is really good fingers crossed - also get cheap energy off peak as I never removed economy 7 meters when I got gas central heating in then moved abroad for 10 years - paying off now.
In Feb 2016 I bought a 2012 Citröen C-Zero for £6k and drove it home to Bournemouth from Cambridge. First time using the Ecotricity charge network as this was all that was available on the motorway. Long story short I made it home. I had the car for nearly 5 years and traded it in for £5k and it only needed new tyres in that time. It’s range was 60 miles in the summer and 45 miles in the winter so long as you didn’t put the heater on. That didn’t change when I traded it in. It was a great 2nd car for my wife who used it every day 8miles each way to her office. It also made very little difference to our electricity bill. It made sense for us to run an EV and it still makes sense.
How many miles with the heater on?
@@contactjd about 40 miles but a puffer jacket was more effective
I have a petrol Aygo. Free tax, 60mpg and 123 fully comp for me and Mrs. Service it myself. Just can't see the point in electric car in my situation. Plus, can go far more than 70 miles and have the heater on 😅
I am not an electric car owner and probably won't be but...
Well done on that purchase, I am amazed at the price. It certainly looks very nice 😊
I must say you are one of the better ev channels.
Until the charging network and grid distribution is up to the job I'm avoiding these over-weight milk floats
@@boldfordis the electricity grid in UK that bad?, or do “you only shower when you are sure that your neighbour are not doing it at the same time otherwise I will run out off water “
@@jensdybrofrederiksen7922 What if the whole street wants to shower at the same time like people will all want to charge their over-weight, child-miner exploiting milk-floats.
@@jensdybrofrederiksen7922 No, the grid in the UK is fine; distribution operators lose income for not hitting targets, so there's incentive to upgrade the grid and avoid power outages (which are usually the result of winter storms downing lines rather than a lack of juice).
@@DT-dc4br `Winter storms` make it ok to not travel then?
I can't knock that £4,400.... for a mint looking low mileage Renault Zoe... 👍👍👍
With a warranty! That's pretty dang good
From whatcar:
_"There are three trim levels: Expression Nav, Dynamique Nav and Signature Nav. The entry-level models get 15in steel wheels, cruise control, climate control and a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav. Upgrade to Dynamique Nav and you'll get 16in alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, keyless entry and start, a DAB radio, and rear parking sensors. Signature Nav adds numerous bronze accents, electronically folding door mirrors, a rear-view camera, heated front seats and a Bose sound system."_
Dynamic Nav was the middle trim. Signature was top of the range, and there was one below I forgot.
The warranty is about 320 quid a year, but you have to keep it in place - if it expires then you can't add it back on again. If you join the RZOC, which casts 15 quid, you get 30 quid off.
Did you take a bluetooth dongle with you and use CanZE to find out what the battery Soh?
I had a Zoe 22kWh and loved it. I can already see from just the partial view you show that they still look very good. I took mine from 23000 miles to about 55000 and could not detect any degradation, so my guess is that you will average 85 miles and might see as much as 100. I think the most I ever saw unless I had reset it was 102 miles. Mine was the 'Q' motor so would charge at 43kW A/C. You suggested that yours wouldn't rapid charge so I guess it's the 'R' motor which can do 22kW and is supposed to be more efficient. I look forward to the next installment.
My 1st Zoe was a 2014 dynamique intens 22khw battery and I got a great deal from a guy in Glasgow, I live near Manchester, got the train up and drove it back, it was January and there was 3ft of snow! I could only do about 60 miles on a charge on the way home😂 that was back in 2016, was still in perfect working order until last year when an airbag fault caused me to sell it as there were no spare parts available 😢
Amazing. You've made Yorkshire proud. No more excuses "But I can't afford an EV"....
Great video. Helpful and with a few car-buying tips (that I hadn't heard of, anyway)
Well done Andy, you nailed it on the TH-cam front too - "Always leave 'em wanting more!" 🙂
Well done. I look forward to seeing how good it is.
Nice autorader tips. I'll be using them. Cheers.
What a bargain, it looks quite nice and I’m sure with that warranty you’ve won’t have a problem. What you purchased it for was fantastic and great for a local run around, and so it’s been a good project for you to do on your You Tube channel, and helpful for some one on a budget to purchase an EV. 👍🏻
Great video thanks, my son is looking for a new car and your tips and advice is really helpful thank you 😊
This is great content EVM.
Good on you, great find. Good video series
Great job Andy. Giving me thoughts on picking up a run around! to go alongside my Kia E Niro!
I paid 8k euros for a 2016 Leaf. It does 137km per charge. 93% battery health. Very pleased.
That has to be a real bargain, great find. It's going to be interesting finding out how it performs and whether it was worth the money. I think if this was a second car for local runabout it will be perfect.
I agree you have to travel. I bought a car in Cardiff when I was living in a Halifax, and I bought our e-Niro from a garage in Eastbourne while living in Cumbria. Both good buys in my opinion.
Well done - I’ve just uploaded a video that looks at various used Zoe offerings and you’ve done well at that price for battery owned I reckon! 👌
Great video! Wish you’d documented your drive home
This has got me intrigued! Looking forward to the next video .
You have one massive bargain there, you are also a very brave man doing that many miles.
Great video evm 👍🏼 great buy would like charging videos on this now to see it in real world 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏼👊🏼👊🏼
9:40 - reminds me of the old trick on eBay where you could search for common misspellings and end up getting items a lot cheaper as nobody else was bidding!
For someone that never really leaves their town, or for city driving, something like this is ideal. Even a 150 mile journey would only necessitate one recharge stop each way.
yea and that would only cost you more than in petrol
@@DRSHANKER I drive a stinky diesel, which is likely even cheaper (I get close to 50 MPG) My comment wasn't for anyone that drives a vehicle with an I.C.E. 😏
Very well done. Shows what's possible.
That's fantastic, you must be be a master at the haggle 👍
A work colleague of mine has a similar Zoe, again battery owned, picked up used on a very cheap PCP so he could try an EV out and then a silly low end payment so he's kept it. Only extra expense is keeping the extended warranty going which is well worth it given some of the repairs he's had would have probably not been economic given the value of the car.
If one does their due diligence an EV can be quite affordable.
7 years ago I purchased a two year old Leaf for less than half the original price.
It has served me well. The battery has degraded to 75 percent, but at almost 200,000 miles still gets me around nicely.
Oops. Typo. 120,000.
What about the damage to the environment caused by BEVs, especially the batteries and tyres, and what about all those children whose lives were really stolen in digging the materials to support your virtue signalling?
@@KillerBill1953 Doesn`t matter to a EV perv about the children and the environment, in their `minds` they tick the box covering their Rs....and that`s all that matters.
@@KillerBill1953 Electric cars are heavier, which results in extra friction with the road, but the regenerative braking system found on EVs negates the need for friction brakes to be applied as often, therefore reducing particulate matter from brakes compared to ICE cars. There is a huge market in EV battery re-cycling. Samsung, Walmart, and Apple have signed the Responsible Mineral Initiative (RMI), which aims to set standards that would clean up the cobalt supply chain. Tesla are making their cathode cobalt free and changing to cleaner cheaper formulas. BMW made a deal with Swedish battery company, Northvolt, which sources its cobalt only from Australian and Moroccan mines to eliminate child miners from their supply chain. In 2023, LG and General Motors are expected to begin production of their latest battery called "Ultium," which is said to contain 70% less cobalt.
Every part of your modern life uses batteries. So your assertion that it is only EV owners who are virtue signalling is mis-guided at best. At worst you have been told to be angry about new technology because you find it difficult to let go of old ways of thinking. And this is without any mention of the untold horrendous damage that oil companies and oil production has caused to millions of peoples lives and the natural environment.
I'll guess that it does still does near the full range as makes no difference, unlike the Leaf with its lack of battery management system. First impression is nice looking car.
Nice work getting one without the battery lease, at that price, with an extended warranty. I think the ongoing lease has made me think twice about ones with a lease as it would be a 2nd car only to complement our Ioniq 38kWh. Looking forward to the next video.
I think I'm leaning more towards the lease, especially on a used car.
The leased batteries come with a guarantee of capacity and so can be replaced by the manufacturer if they fall lower than that, and if you think about it the previous owner has taken the majority of the risk on that. If you pay 3 months of battery lease at like £50 a month then realise the range has dropped to below 75%. £150 for a brand spanking new battery replacement is well cheap.
@@lmaoroflcopter that’s a really good shout actually 👍🏾
I spent ages trying to ring the guy in Harrogate too their phone must have melted! Looked too good to be true.
Wanted a Zoe but ended up with a 2014 leaf (my second), 100k miles and still 10 bars 70 miles range. Under 4k so very happy as a run around, planning on not spending a penny more on it.
Another great video. Just wish you had have shown us round the car. From what I have seen it looks in really good condition. How many charging stops did you have to make to get it home? And on average how long did it take you to charge ? Maybe you will answer these questions in the next video
I’m always up for a bargain. But I can honestly say you’ve done really well here to get a battery owned ZOE on a 2016 year for £4,400. I’d be well chuffed with that. Be ideal for my daughter if she was ready to drive. She’s a bit young yet.
Great video. Just shows what is available
I have a 2022 ZE50 and love it, this only can charge in about an hour for more than that in range I imagine? Love my Zoe as I get around 200 miles range and then a 40 minute break. Drives like a go kart.
What a fantastic idea, love it, great video👍
I think I looked at this car as well. I'll be following this series closely. We have a Model Y as our only car but we're moving house soon. It'll put me a bit further away from shops etc and so a second car is on the cards. Been looking at this exact price range.
Result mate 👍
I recommend you get a centre arm rest..makes the driving position more comfortable.
At last they are coming down to sensible prices, I can see quite a few on autotrader for 5 to 6k which have been up for a while, also I just saw nissan leafs tekna 2015 for 5k, lasst year same model was listed for over 10k lol.
I'm still not happy with the relatively short range though apart from commuting so I am holding onto my diesel for now 70mpg isnt too bad.
Yep, same. Out of interest what engine are you getting 70mpg on.
@@change2023now honda civic sport 2015 diesel, it's a nice enough car, averages between 63mpg and 70 around town, on motorway I have got over 75, obviously depends how you drive but I don't particularly take it easy.
Are tidy garages like that hard to find? 😂 Come round and tidy mine would ya. 😂
I took annual leave of 3 days to tidy mine. It still needs tidying. Does anyone offer "Garage Tidy as a Service"?
That garage is spotless even the jet washer was neatly fitted.
I feel like I spend my life tidying my garage
Stop sitting on the sofa watching shit on tv and get into garage and sort ya shit out lol
Easy if you don’t treat it as a Monica room… out of sight out of mind. I think my garage will soon cause and evolution of some sort of matter 😂😂
Really good video.
Great story well told.
Good job, that price is bloody amazing
One thing I am grateful to the oil lobby for, as well as those who repeat their myths about EVs, is that they are successfully supressing the price of EVs so those of us who want them can buy them at a bargin.
Bargain
@@reggievonramstein yep, autocorrect.
That's a stonking deal! In other news is there anything stopping you adding your new channel under the 'Other Channels' tab on this one?
Well done .Great price you paid for that.a proper good find .
I followed your example and searched Autotrader, the Zoe looks to be great value but I do have one question. The ones I looked at had "battery lease" in brackets. What does that mean? How does that affect the second owner of one of these Zoes?
Brilliant. I'm trying to do something similar for my son and this idea is perfect.
I knew it, type 2 on a rapid gave you away, though I had thought 43kW initially; under £5K yea right!
Well done hitting the challenge of battery owned.
I suppose this has been a challenge set by a fellow TH-camr on the “yea but” premise that you can’t get one under £5K. “Yea but” it’s battery will be knackered.
Didn’t say nout bout rapid charging though, I like it.
Can we find and guest interview on the channel some people who have converted Volvos to electric 😂😂
That's an amazing price. I've been looking for a little EV runaround and something like that would be perfect. Might start looking again....
South Wales! You should have called in for a cuppa! Funnily enough we picked my daughter's MGF up from a seller in Yorkshire, (we used EVM TT man-maths to convince my wife😁) We had the exact same model Zoe, but 2015; had it 2yrs, 20k miles zero detectable battery degradation, so I'm betting yes.
Do you think the new rules for chargers will kill off 22kW standalone posts? IIRC anything 8kW+ will need contactless - I can see the 3 phase posts being restricted to single phase leaving the only 22kW options being on Rapids
Cracking buy mate
Has it had the AC compressor changed? That's a £1,500 bill. Ours went at 60k Miles. Also check the state of the front brakes - ours rusted from lack of use. When was the 12V battery last changed? Budget for a replacement or face lots of weird and hard to reproduce niggles.
Our first EV was a 22KW Zoe, excellent car. For local trips it's ideal.
Ours was great until it started dropping regular £500+ bills on us. Now replaced with MG ZS EV. It's OK but I miss the Zoe.
As a owner of a 64 plate zoe im so happy for you to have joined the club rather than going back to a leaf. They are lovely little cars
From the thumbnail I was convinced you would unveil a Twizy.
Looks good evm, Renault quality OK.... Not a bad price for that age..... But range.?....... Anyway look forward to the update on this car. 😊
This is exactly the search I'm making at the moment. With the same (almost) budget.👍 Looks a tidy car
Great tip for seeing when an ad went up on autotrader
What an amazing find. Brilliant
Great buy!
Apart from a brand new 740i Sport Individual I bought in 2001, I bought 19 used BMWs over 30 years using much the same method. Got to drive without suffering depreciation one would normally associate with owning cars and always loved the cars I bought. Depreciation can be your friend (apart from the 740) 😂
Immediately thought got to be a Zoe. Probably low range with newish battery due to being replaced under battery lease conditions.
Caveat is that monthly charge.
But I was wrong
You got an amazing bargain!
👍
I was £100 out on my guess. Well done on such a bargain. Looking forward to part two. Now the question is are you going to sell it on or keep it as an extra car?
Also Kudos for the dedication of buying this for the channel! Or are you just trying to convince EVW she doesn't need a mini?
Shh.
That's ogmore by sea, I'm from Bridgend and travel that road regularly.
Can not wait to see more about it 👍
Great to see a Tesla stand at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last week. Optimus robot was there on display. Model S and X were doing drives up the Goodwood hill. Great to see Tesla showing their wares at one of the biggest vehicle events on the planet. Lots of other EVs at this event this year eg., Rolls Royce Spectre EV; Lotus Eletre, Caterham project V electric sportscar; Caterham 7 EV; World premier of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N; Hyundai, Lotus, MG and Polestar had big stands at Goodwood. MG cyberster sports car was also there plus the MG 4 XPower and the MG EX4 concept rally car. Ford had the Mustang Mach-e Rally car there and loads more EVs.
Some deals are a waste of time in the end on trading sites.
Great car those ZOE. Had a R110. Stunning to hear it's battery owned.
Even below trade money that. Seller must not have known, even a quick look on motorway would have returned considerably more than that. I went from a leaf to the Zoe. Zoe was very cheaply made, windscreen leaked, air con was knackered and got fed up of knocking my elbows off the cheap plastic door cards. On the plus side it was easy to drive, I got decent mpkw and had it a year and got my money back. I think your a/c will be an expensive one but around £6,000 all in with no lease it’s good
I travelled 160 miles to Skoda Winner garage in Gloucester from Doncaster to get my Skoda Fabia Estate. I wanted a certain colour with a certain mileage and different things that fit my budget. People thought I was mad but if you want something hand picked you can't just be looking in a 50 mile radius like you said. It was 2h 50 minutes one way😂
That's a steal, well done
In Norway there are plenty in that price range (although they are going to be something like an early leaf, a MiEV, or maybe a first gen e-up), 10k gets you a lot more options. You can't get a usable ICE car for 5k either :)
You can get usable ice in the uk for under £1k quite easily, much further range than the zoe too
@@Markcain268much more expensive to run though if you can charge at home. Based on £40ish a week in fuel for me to commute in my old Fiesta compared to around £4 a week in charging for the EV I have now. Fuel for the year costs £1800 or so more so the £5k EV pays for itself within 3 years before even mentioning servicing costs based on my experience of similar sized ICE and electric cars. I also don’t spend all my time charging because I rarely even need to use a public charger and don’t lose any time in my week putting fuel in saving me 5-10 minutes per week not including travel time if I had to go out of my way to a fuel station.
@@christopherhuggins5167 id have to pay off loan installments for a few years to pay for a used ev and repayments would definitely be more than the £50 a month fuel i use, insurance is a few hundred more too, by the time i break even the battery will most likely need replacing at a cost i can't afford which means another loan and back on the repayments again and all for some dull, bland shopping car that i would resent paying insurance for every year!

Can't see any other 1 year ZE50s on auto trader at half price so have to wonder why they sold it so cheap. I guess you will find out soon enough.
Congrats on your newish car, and fully battery owned... Nice
You would expect the Twizy to also be under £5k especially with so many other quadricycles coming to market in the next 12 months - don’t get it
Now this is properly interesting content 👍
I reckon you were near a place called Ogmore, not far from Bridgend, let me know if I'm wrong. ha ha ha.
That is amazing value - that'll certainly have pepped up the Yorkshire in you, eh, Andy...?? 😉
The advantage of buying an EV vs petrol/diesel is you get years of "1/8th price fuel" (octopus night time at about 7.5p = 2p/mile vs 16p mile for petrol) and they have almost zero maintenance.
Indeed. If you are able to stick to home charging most of the time, then yes, massive savings over buying petrol are there to be had.... The occasional times you may get shafted using public charging, are more than compensated for by the savings 90% of the remaining time.
Zero maintenance 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@Brian-om2hheven then I found it's not actually that bad compared to what my old car did. I worked out with the current ridiculous fuel prices I was paying about 22p per mile. Unless I'm paying 75p per KWH I'm not getting near that (75p could land me in the range of 23p-24p per mile) but on average it's 2p per mile using October Intelligent before that on my standard Electric before I got the Smart meter it was still only about 9p per mile and that's classed as crazy for home charging haha.
All these EV nah sayers who spout rubbish like "it's as expensive to charge an EV and to fill with petrol" have got their heads up some orifice and are just cherry picking the worst thing whilst picking the best for the ICE car.
Honestly I laughed when he said they wanted a car that had not lost range like an ICE wouldn't lose range as it got tired. Everything is less efficient when it's older.
But what about the day time electricity cost during all the other hours of the day which is twice the price.
@@ohyesitsme on a standard variable I was on 27p/KWh but on Octopus' Peak price it is 29p/Kwh (In my area) so still only works out about 9p/10p per mile so you're still less than what a petrol or diesel car costs per mile.
you were just around the corner from me, hope you enjoy the car
Now i need to look this car up
The price impresses me because that's my target price range, but even if it has the original range it's just not practical for my context unfortunately.
Great and very important video. There has been a lot of entirely justified concern that the EV revolution might price huge swathes of buyers from owning a car. Typically these might be lower paid workers who need a car to do their jobs, care workers, supermarket staff, cleaners etc etc. This market may typically buy a car in that £3,000 to £5000 bracket. This shows we might be getting there slowly but the situation will only improve as EVs age and more come on to the second hand market. Will watch the follow ups with interest.
A source I found claims that the global market share of EVs was a tiny fraction of a percent in 2013, rising to 14% in 2022. Even though EVs were around a decade ago, they're quite few in number, compared to new ones. This will change over the next decade, as the new EV market share rose quickly year over year over that decade, but the 5-10 year old cars will nevertheless be few-ish for several years yet. But also maybe the number of buyers is fewer out of understandable caution, perhaps rising as people hear reports on the viability of older EVs, of various brands, what to expect, what to buy and not buy, how much to be willing to pay for what.
You did very well there
I once went from NE Scotland to Brighton to pick up a 2nd hand car, bargain but a long trip!
I once went Brisbane to Woodonga (1,450 kms). Refilled the ICE car once in about 6 minutes on the way home. I wouldn't try that in a 22 KWh Zoe. Still, he got a great deal and the 260 miles and long stops was probably worth it.
I’m on the hunt for an EV. Did the same as you suggested and have some in a fav list and have noticed them going up in price over the past few weeks…. So something is changing…
Welcome to the herd of people with Zoe :) Looks great. Congrats!
... bargain!! - love it !
Good afternoon, I’m new to your channel. Loving the content. My questions are. New Vauxhall corsa e £36000 new😢 £14000 2 years old with 10k miles? Why are electric cars losing their value? I’m curious about buying one. Can you buy warranties for the batteries. I need to connect to a domestic plug.
The 2 year old one wasn't that expensive.
Battery warranty is 8 years so I wouldn't worry about it.
I live in S London and holiday in this country twice a year and we normally go to Devon/Cornwall or South Wales and I would not buy an electric car until the range gets much better and the infrastructure gets equally better too, so now you know where I'm coming from Id like to ask you a question. How long did it take you to drive from wales the 260 miles to where ever you live? People like me do have genuine concerns where electric vehicles are concerned we are not just anti electric, far from it as my current car is A 2020 Kia Niro self charging hybrid and I am waiting for delivery of a new Kia Niro. I would willingly have ordered the Niro EV had the range and the infrastructure been in place.
Incidently I have subscribed and hopefully you can answer my question in the next video.
It's a short range EV that's never designed for this journey. As a comparison, if I was in my Tesla, I wouldn't have needed to have stopped at all.
Like petrol cars, EVs aren't all the same.
Bloody bargain mate! Congrats 🎉
Great deal.
Check it’s heater works ok
Amazing ! Appealing car.
