I think it depends. Talking about yourself and your accomplishments is probably not a good thing....but talking about how you overcame obstacles to get there is usually a good thing. Talking about yourself does not really give depth to your character, but if you give history and context of how you became the person that you are tends to help paint a better picture and hopefully makes you more endearing to the other person.
I also lived in Japan for a while and my experience is this: If you are a white man in Japan, you will find easier a girlfriend there. Women search something new there. Also I have heard that some japanese women don't want to stay in Japan and want to go to Europe or America. Unfortunately it's not the other way around. If you are a girl in Japan it is super difficult to get a japanese boyfriend, since mostly they search for a japanese woman. Why? Because they are used to the culture and with a foreign woman it will get more complicated than with a japanese woman.
The problem with dating now is that so much interaction is not face-to-face or even voice. A lot of people have lost their ability to communicate properly without the delay that comes with electronic communications. It's not going to get any better either.

The only girls who ever made a real effort to pick me up were Japanese girls - in San Francisco, Honolulu and Tokyo.
