There may be a weird noise in the background of this video. Apparently my laptop's fan decided to be a dear and make roller coaster noises during the reaction, you know, to get in the mood 😒Hopefully it's not too disruptive. Apologies for that! (unless you like roller coaster noises, then you're in for a treat haha)
„He dropped the f-bomb in the actual chorus.“ Fornication Under Consent of the King Jane just spelled it out. Kind of iconic that she doesn’t remember her past but this word somehow stuck.
I actually look into this and the sentence actually straight up means having sex fornication = sexual intercourse between people not married to each other. In the time where there would be king, unmarried affairs is a punishable crime. This means that Jane is just saying legal unmarried sex, aka fucking
Fun fact; according to a popular fan theory, Noel and Mischa waltzing together is meant to portray them holding onto each other as they fell. not canon, but a good idea nonetheless! (also ty to the dude in the replies who informed me that this concept was, in fact, just a fan theory)
I love everything Jane does, including holding the mic for Constance during the solo. Watching Jane groove and then be like _why am I holding a tambourine_ is hilarious. I've seen a couple other productions where Ocean holds the mic for Constance, and both are completely valid choices based on Constance's arc with both of them.
I agree Also during "the new birthday song" granted they make that one on the spot because plot but at the end when Karnak die they do perform "it's just a ride" of their own free will, because it's them excepting their death (but that does make me wonder about Jane "i know this dream of life is never ending it goes around and round again")
at 6:17, that particular tune is actually supposed to be Jane falling off of the coaster instead of all of them :) Ricky also is the only one who can hear or at least acknowledges her voice, also alluding to her line in her ballad "a melody floats through the air, when silence falls does no one care" showing that nobody seemed to notice her screaming when she flew off but only noticed the group
I said this on the original video, but part of what I think makes the show genius is its setting. Being set in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere really lets it reverse a lot of the typical high school tropes. The popular mean girl isn't the rich fashionista but rather the smartest girl in town who actually has a chance of making it out, and the one who is considered "uncool" is the only one who actually loves her town and doesn't want to leave. Something else that is important to know is that the script has gone through quite a lot of changes over the years. The one in this bootleg isn't the one that's currently used (You can read about half of the current one online for free!) but in every iteration, Ocean and Constance's relationship has been the heart of the show for me
Yeah ride the cyclones part of a trilogy it hunk that's the word it's the second part all the parts are set in uranium and penny lamb is one of the main characters in the first one called lego land
“Time eats all his children in the end” my mythology loving heart CANNOT with that reference. Kronos the god of time ate all his children, the current gods of the Greek mythology
Yep! And, the fact that Jane is wrong foreshadows that she'll be the one to go back too! Kronos never ate Zeus, his youngest (last) son. Jane is implied to be the last to die, being that she screams all through Fall Fair/Uranium suite, and is introduced to the audience last. She is the Zeus of this situation
@@goosewho2903 no i am referring to the kronos of greek mythology, in my language both are zeus and kronos are referred as gods as we dont have word for titan
"why does he hate her so much" made me want to comment about what I think Karnak is actually trying to do. I think that the whole show Karnak is trying to help Ocean become a better person and accept her death so she can pass onto the afterlife peacefully. She wants to vote for herself because its a unanimous vote and she wants to do everything in her power to win so he switches it up on her and makes her make the decision by herself. He is constantly playing with her to help her see that she wasn't a good person and help her recognise that. I think that's really sweet of him and makes their storyline very cute.
I love Ricky's character, and especially the way that this actor threads the delicate balance of likability, because it's so easy to push Ricky into the category of either "unrepentant horndog" or "tragic disabled person who chooses death because it's better that way", neither of which I feel represents him. He is fundamentally zen, realistic about his wants and abilities, amused by his changes in circumstances, but absolutely accepting wherever life (or death) takes him. And the way that this actor somehow manages to balance a realistically awkward depiction of someone who's been mute for years with genuine Ziggy Stardust vibes is amazing! (But yeah, watching the show makes his character make SO much more sense than the cast recording alone, the latter is quite the decontextualized mindfuck!)
I don't know if anyone mentioned this but Noel's Lament is actually a ballad. A ballad about him wishing he had lived a tragedy before he died. (I believe that's the reason) The ballad of Jane Doe is actually a lament. She is lamenting over not knowing who she used to be in her life.
My own personal theory for this is because what Noel wanted was a lament, he wanted a lament because he craved a sad story, likewise Jane wanted a ballad, she wanted a story to tell :)
I definitely got Cats vibes when I first watched this show. It reminded me of that video essay by Sideways where it said that basically Cats only works because of Memory. You'd be a dick to hear Memory and then think that any of the other cats deserve to be reborn. With this, it's the Ballad of Jane Doe. As soon as she sings that, you can't imagine anyone else being chosen to come back to life.
It's a little thing, but once you see it, you always see it; Jane Doe's hands. She holds them in a specific way, like a doll's hands, from start to finish. Emily Rohm absolutely nailed the "haunted doll" persona, down to the most minute detail.
@@Malachi3-3 That too! Dolls that closed their eyes were a big thing from the early 1900's to the 1980's. Totally appropriate for the "doll's head" she's wearing. 👍
@@ChristopherRuggles Wasn't really belittlement, just a correction, but go you!!! 😍😘😘 I'm sure strangers on the Internet care about your tragic memory loss 🥺🥺 Edit: My friend's comment on this: "i mean @englishatheart kinda no one asked but wtv pop off but also @ChristopherRuggles babygirl i think u just mad + how has memory loss got anything to do with whether u use apostrophes or not i seriouslt doubt your memory is that far gone that u physically can’t remember when u need an apostrophe or not bcos at that point its fuckin dementia not long covid mate" AND LMAOOO I AGREE WITH MY MATE SO MUCH
I have a head cannon that the machine told Nole all that stuff about his funeral to give him his wish of feeling true betrayal. Also with Ricky’s song I think it’s important to be thinking about Ocean’s comments during her song when analyzing it. He probably heard a lot of similar comments or sentiments in his life, so him coming up with a world in which his genetic makeup is necessary and where he is encouraged to reproduce I think is probably a reaction to sentiments of social Darwinism and eugenics. He is seen not just as a whole person in his song but as someone important and vital.
Idk if anyone else said this but in the end karnak says "your lucky number is 7" and right before we find out that Jane/Penny's birthday is "april 7, aries the lucky nature".
before i watched the musical i heard noel’s lament and what the world needs, never would i ever have thought they were the same musical. the absolute whiplash the show has lmao
yeah dude, i heard tragic fact, what the world needs, noel's lament and the ballad of jane doe not knowing how they were literally all the same musical xDDDD
There's a theory going around with how everyone is singing abt being dead in Fall Fair Suite while Jane Doe is still 'screaming', and I'd like to add on how she shows up later than the others. Basically it is thought she is the last to die/everyone was already dead and Jane Doe is still falling and screaming
@@ChuuyasCvmslut iirc, when someone is beheaded there's still a little bit of oxygen on their brain which allows the brain to keep working for a little bit before finally dying It's not a lot so it's not like they can stay alive for a long time, but it's long enough to keep them "alive" for a little bit Since Jane is introduced later, it's possible that when she got beheaded she was still alive for a few moments and that's why she showed up later, this is backed up by the line: "And from the ground, beneath my feet, I hear the anguish of the street" which also could mean that she was alive for a *little* while after being beheaded
"When a lioness has children, she stops making love to the lion. The lion gets jealous-sometimes so jealous he eats the children. You'd think this would upset the lioness. Far from it. They make love again like the children never existed. I find that idea terrifying"
The man playing Karnak is my friend Karl Hamilton (we went to high school together). He played the role in Chicago, New York and Seattle. (Unfortunately they didn't use him on the soundtrack.) It's a very impressive costume they had on him. Apparently, many first time viewers really thought it was a puppet.
was he really hot the whole time (as in, temperature)? When I watch this I always think the actor must have been really uncomfortable the whole time lol. Not just hot but really restricted with the mask and staying stuck in one place the whole time
Yeah, I got into Ride the Cyclone just before my class was doing nuclear chemistry When listening to Uranium Suite, the "we came here for the half life" happened and the joke clicked and everything made sense
This, but also that comment about how Mischa's real mom died from radiation at Chernobyl. He was spared from losing his life to uranium like his mother only to have the life sucked out of him rotting in a basement in Uranium, while his only source of love was back in the country he had been sent away from.
I love talia so much, I’ve made a whole essay analyzing that song specifically. The way it slowly builds up into the folk music as you said absolutely shatters my heart everytime. And the symbolism is just so… I love the way Jane stayed projecting talia on her skirt much longer then ocean and constance, since her and talia were never strictly identified, they’re both unknown. And the way it breaks into the same genre as Mischa’s first song near the end to symbolize his rage that he’ll never meet the one he loves is just,,, god this musical does things to me
"Ricky is probably the least like what I was expecting" Keep in mind, Ricky and Mischa are both played by different actors here than in the cast recording, so that likely will influence your reaction as well.
ALSO!!! If you look at the very begginning of the musical where they show all the choir members' faces on the projector, you can see jane doe for a SPLIT second covering her face with her hands.
i must say, my favorite part of this whole show is how enthusiastic jane is as a background dancer without fail, it's just so lovely to see her having fun
You ask early on if Misha and Noel have a thing early on because of the group hug bit, but even earlier they're actually waltzing together during the "spinning round and round and round" scene
I think it's interesting that while Misha thought they'd both go back to back, Noel went in for a hug like the girls, leaving them both a little awkward
‘you might live for a day or eternity theres no time for a judge or a referee no one will measure how hard we tried’ these lyrics hit the absolute hardest because of how real they are
Something I find so funny in the beginning of the musical Ocean says “teen sex kills’ Constance just over here lost her virginity a hour before they died
My favorite thing about mishas song is that whenever he tries to touch talia the projection gets pulled away showing that he will truly never marry her.
the pictures used in the slideshow after jane doe got revived are mostly the actress' childhood and life! (except for the ones where it's a baby and an old woman, those are different actors.) most of them are real, some are fabricated though.
During the final number (it's not a game/it's just a ride) during the "around around and round again" all the choir look like their all going to go and live and go into formation but its just the formation of the rollercoaster and the platform just moves them back into position to relive the moment of the accident... and the accident will just replay "around around and round again"... they will just have to suffer with reliving the trauma of it replaying constantly... forever.. "It goes on and on and never ends"
God, Constance's speech about shame just gets me, man. I basically have that whole monologue memorized by now, lol. And for an extra gut punch, just think about how much of that shame likely comes from Ocean and how Ocean looks so sorry after "Sugar Cloud". I will say though, the elements about losing her virginity to the carnie never feels organic to me? Not that it doesn't make sense for her story, but the way it's presented. Nothing prompts her to blurt this out first. And I never get the "Constance the lifer loses it to a carnie in a crap box. Why of course she did" bit. Maybe because this is one of the first things they wrote for the show, I don't know.
I love that speech so much as well, especially the whole "I was thinking awful things about my parents that I didn't want to because they were good people". Ugh it's so real. The way you can lose control of your own thoughts and feelings because of peer pressure/gaslighting is awful and that speech reflects that so well. I think the whole virginity thing makes a lot of sense for her though because she's the type of person who used to do things just to please other people or feel included and losing her virginity to a stranger in a carnival is a pretty bad thing so it kinda helps reinforce how far she was willing to go to feel like the other kids
I always saw Constance losing her virginity as two things. 1: The complete opposite of what Ocean wanted her to be and 2: her conforming to what the teens around her are. It wasn't exactly nice, or something she enjoyed, but something she had to do to be a "normal" teen. She isn't proud of the choice.
I get what you're saying about it not feeling organic. They tried a little too hard to make her pathetic. Peeling glue off her fingers, untying a knot, having sex in a shitbox, etc. She would've committed suicide.
As someone who really relates to constance in a lot of ways, I disagree. Idk you tend to just blurt those things out. I also lost my virginity in a way I'm very ashamed of just to lose it because I felt I lived my life in a box as just the nice prudish kid. It's sporadic but that what you devolve to when you feel like a loser. I also am one to blurt out things like that when I get emotional or when I feel like I won't be judged because you're so used to holding in that shame that you just want to let it out, even if it seems out of place. It would honestly feel more forced to me if there was build up because building up to saying things like that makes you want to retreat more.
I always really understood that line actually. There’s a certain point you can reach in hating yourself where you start to wish bad things on yourself or complicitly let easily avoided things happen or even seek them out because you think it’s what you deserve or that it proves that you are what you think you are, and there’s consolation in being right and having “proof” you’re right. In Constance’s case she thinks she’s a loser and that this proves it. You stop seeing yourself as you and start seeing yourself as this other person that you hate or as this character in a story that you’re just helping reach it’s “logical” conclusion. “Constance the lifer loses it to a carnie in a crap box. Why of course she did.” She feels like that’s the logical conclusion. Hopefully that makes sense.
19:06 to explain for those (like me) who didn't get it at first: Fornication Under Consent of the King 21:40 also apparently what Ricky said was binary for 'w'
9:35 OMG YES BC THEN JANE NEVER LOSES HER HEAD, SHE'S WHOLE, COMPLETE, AND SHE ALSO GETS TO COMPLETE HER LIFE, EVERYTHING IS WHOLE. OMG I NEVER NOTICED THE FORESHADOWING
If you think about it The whole thing was made for Ocean (And jane) Because Jane was gonna win no matter what because karnak could just choose who to bring back to life and he can also control what people do so he could just force people to vote for who he wants And out of everyone Ocean is the restless spirit because everyone was like sad but content with their death but Ocean was not Everything Karnak does to Ocean is so that she learns her lesson Like making her go first so she has the most time to develop There's more that i can't remember from the top of my head But in the end Karnak made Ocean be the deciding vote to make sure that she learns her lesson and grew Who Ocean votes for doesn't really matter since Karnak has the power but he made Ocean vote to make sure she had learned her lesson This just from a video about Ride the cyclone so i might be wrong
I mean Karnak does control them at times to keep the story moving along (with the musical sequences), but he does emphasize at the beginning that their wills are their own. I personally think he just said that to explain why they were going along with the choreography and backing of each song (especially in Ocean's song at the beginning, i mean if a person called you and everyone else losers that are never getting ahead in life while singing thier own praises. I personally wouldn't want to be a part of the human pyramid she stands on.) But that is certainly a plausible theory though. I do agree that Karnak does encourage Ocean to develop throughout, and his decisions do reflect that, but I don't think Karnak would have forced a particular vote. It would go against the whole premise of making someone change by thier own free will, if Karnak had forced Ocean to vote for Jane she would have learned nothing. Ocean had to develop on her own, Karnak just helped with the process.
yesss fall fair suite stans rise For real though, something that’s super interesting to look into is the different versions of the opening song for this show. There are four main ones over the years (with minor alterations in different shows): Uranium / Tragic Fact, Fall Fair Suite (the one in the production you watched), Uranium Suite (the one on the cast album), and Waiting for the Drop. Fall Fair Suite is my personal fave, but they’re all bangers, and it’s really interesting to see what they drop or keep coming back to as the show evolves. If you do ever look into them, on your own or for a video, I’d highly recommend finding videos, the choreography is so cool for all of them!
The more often you watch Ride the Cyclone, the more seriously you take Misha. "Talia" is now the song that makes me cry the most, even more so than "The Ballad of Jane Doe"
fun fact when mischa started the rap part in talia it’s because he was angry about not being able to see her ever again and when it fades back into the calming sad music it represents his realization that him and talia won’t be together ever
I would also highly recommend listening to "clockmaker's Daughter" musical! It's a beautiful severely underrated musical with stunning vocals and orchestrations!
First of all, your cap is stunning! And your reaction to the Ballad of Jane Doe is everything I ever wanted, it's just absolutely heartrending in its beauty. Just every time I watch it I think about how wonderful art is. I'm so glad that you were able to experience the personalities and humor of each of the kids, as it's such a core element of why the show works in the first place. I'll never get over It's Not a Game/It's Just a Ride. Every time I watch it my feelings get pummeled 😭. The love in just living. Have a wonderful time zone!
The remark about the characters in the background of Jane’s number being “incognito” is an interesting take over never heard. I thought they were simple mourners at an internment, but that doesn’t have to be exclusive.
Fun Fact! Ride The Cyclone is part of the "Uranium Teen Scream Trilogy". It is the second in the series. The first is called "Legoland" and one of the main characters is none other than "Penny Lamb". It isn't clear if Jane was Penny before, after and got reincarnated as her or both at the same time.
Ride the cyclone is one of very few stories I know that has a happy ending where children die (and yes there's at least one other i can think of, which incidently is also a musical story)
17:57 to answer the accordion question, he is! the directors stated in another video how Alex Wyse (and im gonna assume the other actors of ricky) had to learn how to play accordion for the song.
during Talia, it speeds up to party music at the end because Mischa felt too vulnerable and needed to rage (calling back to his first song), that's why his dance movements were angry and more violent. he uses the autotune party stuff to cope and put up his front after feeling so much love and longing for Talia
I absolutely love this show! The amount of breath support you have to have to sing just about anything of these songs let alone upside down?? Is crazy. Though as a disabled person the treatment of ricky’s character is gross and supposedly theyre working on rewriting the book slightly to be less ableist
just saying in case you didn't know, the intro in what you watched here is Fall Fair Suite!! it's a completely different song to Uranium Suite, and Uranium Suite does have live cast recordings! there are also other ones, for example Waiting For the Drop and Tragic Fact!!
No matter if it’s the live performance or the cast recording or if I’ve heard it a million times, Noel’s falsetto at the end of his song always impresses me Edit: I’m starting to realize part of why I love Mischa so much is because he bounces around so much during his little monologue before his song and I also bounce around when I’m getting emotional or passionate about things
I went down a rabbit hole a few days ago when I finally decided to listen to the cast recording. I then proceeded to watch the bootleg, and then I started looking up fanart. So, a very productive all night binge if I do say so myself. From just listening to the cast recording I was tied between Noel’s Lament and Ballad of Jane Doe for my favourite song thinking one of them would be my favourite character, but the bootleg blindsided me and Mischa ended up being my favourite character. I cried after the Talia sequence. I do still love them all though, they’re all so sweet and funny. Loved it❤ If you’re looking for any more musicals, I cannot reccomend Bandstand enough, one of my favourites. The songs are fantastic, and if you watch the recording, you’ll see they’re all playing their own instruments. She Loves Me is also another very good pick if you want more of a funny romantic comedy via some penpal miscommunications. The characters are so loveable in both!
This is the second show in the “Uranium Teen Scream Trilogy”. The first was called Legoland. There are only two characters in it: Penny Lamb and her brother Ezra. I don’t think there are any recordings floating around, but you can find the script online. It’ll give you an idea of why no one identified Jane Doe.
I love all the regrences but the one that I just realized after watching for the 100th time was the Alice in Wonderland. In the beginning song, Noel sung that "the bunny ran away and disappeared", suggested that they were entering Wonderland but throughout all the songs they would describe life as a never ending dream. So it would either be saying that life is closer to wonderland and that death was merely waking them up or the other way around. Lol probably not it but I thought it was an intresting thing to shoot out!
I do wanna point out that the writing of having Ricky concede is playing into the idea that disabled people are better off dead, regardless of his personal circumstances and reasons for conceding. The way that you interpreted his conceding is due to that idea that he couldn’t possibly be happy in life again is inherently ableist, but you aren’t alone in thinking that about him. It’s ingrained into a lot of media and society as a whole so it’s not a rare thing for people to assume disabled people would rather be dead, or would be better off that way. From my perspective as a physically disabled teenager, it feels uncomfortable. It’s strange and upsetting that some people think it would be better if people like me were dead, if I were dead. They believe that I can’t live a full and happy life, just because of my disability. I’ve also got gripes with the fact that he’s a disabled character intended for able-bodied actors, but that’s a whole other can of worms.
Hey lovely, my deepest apologies if I made you feel uncomfortable. I totally understand where you're coming from and wanted to make it clear where I'm coming from as well. The idea of him being better off dead would never even cross my mind, my comments in the video are about the people he had to deal with in life treating him as less than. It's about being away from people who caused him harm and treated him differently because of his disability. It's also not about him being better off dead, but being better off in a kinder place where he is free from a world that discriminates against him, not from his disability. I'm really sorry if I came across the wrong way or caused you any discomfort, my sincerest apologies, it was definitely not my intention
i thought the reason for his conceding was that because of his disability not exactly being something he could hide and knowing that where they live is pretty closed minded because of some things implied in some of the monologues (also how it’s implied ocean only got him in the club for sympathy points) that living there would be hard for him especially after dying and being able to move and talk as he liked that he was happier dead, i didn’t think of it like this😭 this really changed my point of view
I’ve read a lot of the discussion around this character, and I just want to say in response to this particular point, while it is a valid one, his intro makes it clear that he’s not so much “disabled” as he is terminally ill. He wasn’t born that way, and doesn’t have the prospect of a full (if different) life if he survives the accident. I think his concession isn’t implying disabled people don’t have lives worth living, but that Ricky has already come to terms with his death, and would rather die quickly in a roller coaster accident than slowly of a degenerative disease. If there’s a larger point to be made, it’s that terminally ill people have the right to choose death on their own terms.
Yeah the way he’s written is definitely uncomfortable, though I do think that his reason for conceding wasn’t bc he could not be happy, but bc he was already dying and had come to terms with his death, of course he wants to live again but he’s not going to be selfish and take another person’s chance at life, which is what the others realize.
This is just a personal opinion, but you made me want to share my thoughts as well :D I'm also disabled, and I think there was potential here for sure. They didn't have him - or the others - say he'd be better off not returning because his disability. He was also portrayed as being incredibly caring throughout the whole show, so the "don't be a dick" line feels like a perfectly believable reason why he'd concede! Misha's line about him being so "awesome in the afterline" is a big yikes though, that could have been worded better. Or at least been at a different moment, right after he concedes it reads too much as what you brought up. The decision to simply make him not disabled (among many other changes) for new performances irks me a lot. They didn't even make an effort to improve on what could have been great representation! Like what if they made it a point to clarify that his disabilities don't just disappear when he's that, because that's such an annoying concept and so harmful too, but because of Karnak's power or because his vivid imagination causes those changes in the twilight zone? It being such an in-between state would make sense for that! Maybe he could sign instead of speaking? Even if he suddenly gained the ability to speak, it would surely still feel more comfortable to sign. Just, so many things they could have considered.
cool thing i saw about talia (the song, not the actual character). when they start projecting the video of talia on the girls dresses, they mainly put the video on jane. this kinda means that they never really knew if talia was a real person/mischas real girlfriend or not, like how they didnt remember jane being a part of the choir.
4:31 this part is so minor, but this would've terrified me as a kid. Because when you're a kid, and you're sitting down in the theater, listening to the band practicing before it really starts, you're waiting forever (it feels like), and then the lights go down and you feel the suspense... Then the headless person sings a creepy ass song... THEN A FORTUNE TELLER TELLING THEIR AUDIENCE THIS
I don’t know if anyone has said this in the comments-I understand this video is older, but I just stumbled upon this show and am obsessed-but your point on the “family fun setting” could easily be interpreted as a commentary on the parental tendency to shelter children from the harsher realities of the world, thereby putting them in more danger than if they were to enter adulthood knowing what they are going to be encountering.
I feel like when Karnak mentions, "The one who wants to win it the most will redeem the loser in order to complete the whole," he's referring to them all accepting their deaths, thus being able to move on peacefully. Ocean struggled the most, so she most likely was the final piece. I wonder, if she hadn't accepted her fate in the end, would her turmoil had condemned everyone else?
One detail that I dont see alot of people notice, but during The ballad of Jane Doe her shadow has angel wings near the end. It's such a cool detail that just adds to how crazily amazing that song is!
6 actually. Tragic Fact (2008-2013) Keep That Dream Inside (original 2015 song made in 2014) The Fall Fair Suite 1.0 (2015) Fall Fair Suite 2.0/Minor Turn (2016) Waiting For The Drop (2018) Uranium Suite (2019-)
I don’t know if anyone pointed this out, you might already know, but the reason the opening was different in the cast recording and the slime tutorial is because they’re actually two completely different songs, Fall Fair Suite and Uranium Suite. There are two other openings, Waiting for the Drop and Tragic Fact that were also used briefly, but by far the longest-running opening was Fall Fair. There’s a lot of debate in the fandom about which of the four is best but Fall Fair always seems to win in any debate.
Don't know if you remember me from the video where you listened to the cast recording, maybe you do because you hearted my comment there, but the alternate opening song I suggested you listened to, fall fair suite, is the opening song in this video. Just so you know! Fall Fair Suite is my favorite opening.
I haven't listened to the other openings (apparently there are a couple of other versions?) but I also like this one MUCH better than the album version
The thing is it's kind of fate that Karnak was set to Family Fun Mode since if he hadn't been, and had been able to warn the choir about their deaths, then they wouldn't have ridden The Cyclone and thus wouldn't have died, but then that would have meant that they were never going to die on The Cyclone, creating a paradox where Karnak can only have predicted accurately if he says nothing.
Pleaseeeee watch Alice by Heart at some point! It’s from the creators of spring awakening and really is so perfect in many ways, definitely watch the bootleg so it makes more sense 😂 and another suggestion is Bonnie & Clyde, it has Jeremy Jordan at some of his best vocals and is a really fun take on the story of B&C
I love ABH, but it’s definitely a hard one to follow through the soundtrack. I legit had no idea what the plot was about for ages because the bootleg was really rare at the time 😂 definitely think she should react to the bootleg
@@Barbara2.0 …Ok on second thought, I would be curious to see how well you can piece it together. You definitely understood Ride the Cyclone better than I did on my first listen lol
I know its been a few days but I also HIGHLY suggest the mccarter theatre version too!! most (if not all) the people involved are different and its a slightly different take on some songs! there's a few different versions in the songs too and I think you'd enjoy it!
One of my favorite things is that with every song, so much personality is conveyed in how they move. Like they are all dorky teenagers dancing and showing themselves in the ways they think makes them look ‘cool’.
Space age bachelor man in the musical is SO different from the cast recording and I must say, the live versions sound 100x better than the studio versions in my opinion
I love watching you react to this show. I was so into the show already but it's really cool to watch it through you with all of your analysis. Some of the things you point out about this show are so much more in depth than I realized. Also I love you getting excited about your birthday being close to Noel's haha. I actually have the same birthday as Penny Lamb at the end!
I love this video and your insight it's awesome. Some other shows that I'd love to see you react to. Spongebob musical, urinetown, 25th annual putnam county spelling bee, Drowsy Chaperone, bring it on, kinky boots, wind in the willows 2017.
ride the cyclone’s one of, if not, my favourite musical(s) ever but ricky’s always bothered me a little. i like the character, don’t get me wrong, but it’s weird that the play portrays him like there’s no reason for him to go back because of his disability, like his life wasn’t worth living in the first place. it might even be the biggest issue the play has because otherwise it’s fantastic but it really irks me.
For what it's worth, saw the most recent incarnation of the play a couple of weeks ago, and things have changed a bit. Ricky doesn't concede that I recall, and don't remember anything about Ocean getting him in. (though I'm old.. I may have missed/forgotten it ;) The overall gist of the play in my observation (and Ricky specifically) is that everyone has had a valid life, even if Ricky's is mostly in his head. He's totally cool with that. He's the star of his own rock opera! If Ricky had a vote at the end, pretty sure he would have voted for Jane too, and not just to avoid his prior life. Fall fair suite was better than the new Uranium suite though... less about the town (who cares?) and more about the kids. It also contradicts Constance's early belief that the town sucks when they're singing it's praises to start the show... doesn't work as well in setting up the story. The sense you get from Fall Fair is that they're all individuals participating in a common activity that goes bad, not that they're a community/fast friends. It highlights the solo numbers initially and the group eventually coming together in death, etc.
@@koralisenv7014 Yeah, I commented this a while ago. I'm happier with how they portrayed Ricky but they didn't need to go as far as removing Ocean's ablism (it's part of what makes her so unlikable before we see that development). On the new intro song, Fall Fair Suite is just better, hands down but on them praising the town: I don't really agree. They're competing in a competition for their school, of course they're going to praise their town, they didn't even write the song either. But yeah, I'm very jealous of you, I want to see this musical live sooo bad. Hope you enjoyed.
@@tioraidh-tux Daughter, wife and friend/daughter went to see the show in New Hampshire last year. A different theatre advertised putting on a show somewhat closer to home, and my wife told daughter's friend, who tried out and got to be Ocean in the production. :) Gotta say, the show's rendition of Sugar Cloud was amazing. All of the songs were quite good, but Sugar Cloud put the cast recording to shame. There are a lot of regional theatres out there.. check their upcoming schedules and you might stumble on a production you can see. I could puke a rainbow!
"Talia" hits SOOOO different considering recent events... if you know what I mean. There's a very high chance that when Mischa returns to his country... Talia might not be there anymore. Worse, she might be dead.
I once watched a production that instead of showing Mischa and Talia reuniting at the end of the song, showed Mischa looking at his phone, and seeing the destruction of his home. It was extremely moving.
I mean, isn't that kind of perfect, given the subject matter?
Kinda is, right? ;)
How fitting!!
It also kind of sounds like an old movie projector which also fits.
Fair. Thanks for the help! Hahahaha

Fornication
Under
Consent of the
King
Jane just spelled it out. Kind of iconic that she doesn’t remember her past but this word somehow stuck.
THIS IS ACTUALLY SO FUNNY AND I NEVER NOTICED IT 💀 THANK YOU SO MUCH
Fornication Under Consent Of The King is the assumed origin of the word fuck
@@calamity2383 It's not. That's a myth.
@@englishatheart Hence the word "assumed"
I actually look into this and the sentence actually straight up means having sex
fornication = sexual intercourse between people not married to each other.
In the time where there would be king, unmarried affairs is a punishable crime. This means that Jane is just saying legal unmarried sex, aka fucking
Fun fact; according to a popular fan theory, Noel and Mischa waltzing together is meant to portray them holding onto each other as they fell. not canon, but a good idea nonetheless!

a lot of people say that sugar cloud was the only dance that the kids had free will and weren't moved against their will.
I agree
Also during "the new birthday song" granted they make that one on the spot because plot but at the end when Karnak die they do perform "it's just a ride" of their own free will, because it's them excepting their death (but that does make me wonder about Jane "i know this dream of life is never ending it goes around and round again")
@@pdtrx4900 I think it means that in the future, Jane/Penny will see them all again. And they’ll be waiting, too.

at 6:17, that particular tune is actually supposed to be Jane falling off of the coaster instead of all of them :) Ricky also is the only one who can hear or at least acknowledges her voice, also alluding to her line in her ballad "a melody floats through the air, when silence falls does no one care" showing that nobody seemed to notice her screaming when she flew off but only noticed the group
OHMYGOD
I said this on the original video, but part of what I think makes the show genius is its setting. Being set in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere really lets it reverse a lot of the typical high school tropes. The popular mean girl isn't the rich fashionista but rather the smartest girl in town who actually has a chance of making it out, and the one who is considered "uncool" is the only one who actually loves her town and doesn't want to leave. Something else that is important to know is that the script has gone through quite a lot of changes over the years. The one in this bootleg isn't the one that's currently used (You can read about half of the current one online for free!) but in every iteration, Ocean and Constance's relationship has been the heart of the show for me
Great insight, my friend! :)
And this is not the first either. The one before this had two acts and more characters
As someone from a small town in the middle of nowhere that’s very accurate lol
Yeah ride the cyclones part of a trilogy it hunk that's the word it's the second part all the parts are set in uranium and penny lamb is one of the main characters in the first one called lego land

“Time eats all his children in the end” my mythology loving heart CANNOT with that reference. Kronos the god of time ate all his children, the current gods of the Greek mythology
Yeeeeeeees, I totally forgot to comment on that and was hoping someone would mention it, but it makes me very happy too
Iirc, that's a different Kronos. You're probably talking about the titan one, father of Zeus who ate all his children.
@@goosewho2903 no i am referring to the kronos of greek mythology, in my language both are zeus and kronos are referred as gods as we dont have word for titan
@@wolframshibuya2693 yeah but, the god of time Kronos is different from the one that ate Zeus and his siblings
I don't know if anyone mentioned this but
Noel's Lament is actually a ballad. A ballad about him wishing he had lived a tragedy before he died. (I believe that's the reason)
The ballad of Jane Doe is actually a lament. She is lamenting over not knowing who she used to be in her life.
Yeah someone mentioned it on the other video, I'm obsessed with that
@@Barbara2.0 yeah, I remember my brain malfunctioning when I first found out
yeah, I saw a tumblr post that said that Noel's lament is a ballad and the ballad of jane doe is a lament lmao
My own personal theory for this is because what Noel wanted was a lament, he wanted a lament because he craved a sad story, likewise Jane wanted a ballad, she wanted a story to tell :)
@@nibble_nephim OH MY GOD YOUR RIGHT!
I once heard someone describe this musical as "reverse Cats" and I can't get that out of my head
Space Age Bachelor Man flashbacks 😭
It's a little thing, but once you see it, you always see it; Jane Doe's hands. She holds them in a specific way, like a doll's hands, from start to finish. Emily Rohm absolutely nailed the "haunted doll" persona, down to the most minute detail.
I even find the way she blinks doll-like (eventhough they don't blink)

When you realise the actress had a HARNESS ON that was probably a bit constricting and STILL MANAGED TO HIT THOSE NOTES!
Ah if you didn’t understand what Jane meant when she said “Fornication Under Consent of the King” she basically was saying Fuck in a special way😂
Oh yeah, I did. Was just stunned by the words she used hahahaha
I remember when I first watched the show and I was so confused!! It wasn’t until I read the lyrics that I realized it was fuck
There's a theory going around with how everyone is singing abt being dead in Fall Fair Suite while Jane Doe is still 'screaming', and I'd like to add on how she shows up later than the others. Basically it is thought she is the last to die/everyone was already dead and Jane Doe is still falling and screaming
Ohh that might explain why she was introduced a little bit later than the others, since she died after them?
@@ChuuyasCvmslut iirc, when someone is beheaded there's still a little bit of oxygen on their brain which allows the brain to keep working for a little bit before finally dying
It's not a lot so it's not like they can stay alive for a long time, but it's long enough to keep them "alive" for a little bit
Since Jane is introduced later, it's possible that when she got beheaded she was still alive for a few moments and that's why she showed up later, this is backed up by the line: "And from the ground, beneath my feet, I hear the anguish of the street" which also could mean that she was alive for a *little* while after being beheaded

When listening to Uranium Suite, the "we came here for the half life" happened and the joke clicked and everything made sense
This, but also that comment about how Mischa's real mom died from radiation at Chernobyl. And the way it breaks into the same genre as Mischa’s first song near the end to symbolize his rage that he’ll never meet the one he loves is just,,, god this musical does things to me
this!!! and it’s projected on jane because she has no sense of her own personality/body and she’s represented as talia because nobody really can be
Omg i want to read this essay SO BAD would you consider sharing it?

REAL
Something I find so funny in the beginning of the musical Ocean says “teen sex kills’
Constance just over here lost her virginity a hour before they died
Three
My favorite thing about mishas song is that whenever he tries to touch talia the projection gets pulled away showing that he will truly never marry her.
the pictures used in the slideshow after jane doe got revived are mostly the actress' childhood and life!

9:35 OMG YES BC THEN JANE NEVER LOSES HER HEAD, SHE'S WHOLE, COMPLETE, AND SHE ALSO GETS TO COMPLETE HER LIFE, EVERYTHING IS WHOLE.
OMG I NEVER NOTICED THE FORESHADOWING
If you think about it
The whole thing was made for Ocean (And jane)
Because Jane was gonna win no matter what because karnak could just choose who to bring back to life and he can also control what people do so he could just force people to vote for who he wants
And out of everyone
Ocean is the restless spirit because everyone was like sad but content with their death but Ocean was not
Everything Karnak does to Ocean is so that she learns her lesson
Like making her go first so she has the most time to develop
There's more that i can't remember from the top of my head
But in the end Karnak made Ocean be the deciding vote to make sure that she learns her lesson and grew
Who Ocean votes for doesn't really matter since Karnak has the power but he made Ocean vote to make sure she had learned her lesson
This just from a video about Ride the cyclone so i might be wrong
Ocean had to develop on her own, Karnak just helped with the process.
yesss fall fair suite stans rise
For real though, something that’s super interesting to look into is the different versions of the opening song for this show.
Wow I didn't know that. Love seeing how a show develops so I'll definitely look into them. Thanks!
The more often you watch Ride the Cyclone, the more seriously you take Misha. "Talia" is now the song that makes me cry the most, even more so than "The Ballad of Jane Doe"
I think my favorite thing about rtc reactions is watching people realize Jane is flying. It’s so funny every time
fun fact when mischa started the rap part in talia it’s because he was angry about not being able to see her ever again and when it fades back into the calming sad music it represents his realization that him and talia won’t be together ever
I would also highly recommend listening to "clockmaker's Daughter" musical! It's a beautiful severely underrated musical with stunning vocals and orchestrations!
The first photos of the babys when Jane doe is resurrected aren’t the actress but the rest of the photos are of her actress Emily Rohm!
I HAVE BEEN SO STARVED FOR RTC REACTION CONTENT THANK YOU SO MUCH 🙏🙏🙏
21:40 , I was expecting a comment about how Mischa hits Ricky's face with the mic 😭
8:01 “Do Mischa and Noel have a thing?”
*insert the scenes where Mischa is crying and hugs Noel and where Noel puts his head on his shoulder here*
17:57 to answer the accordion question, he is! the directors stated in another video how Alex Wyse (and im gonna assume the other actors of ricky) had to learn how to play accordion for the song.
Two times during Jane doe's ballad the shadows make wings in her sides:)
during Talia, it speeds up to party music at the end because Mischa felt too vulnerable and needed to rage (calling back to his first song), that's why his dance movements were angry and more violent. he uses the autotune party stuff to cope and put up his front after feeling so much love and longing for Talia
Do you mean hiphop?
I absolutely love this show! The amount of breath support you have to have to sing just about anything of these songs let alone upside down?? Is crazy. Though as a disabled person the treatment of ricky’s character is gross and supposedly theyre working on rewriting the book slightly to be less ableist
just saying in case you didn't know, the intro in what you watched here is Fall Fair Suite!! it's a completely different song to Uranium Suite, and Uranium Suite does have live cast recordings! there are also other ones, for example Waiting For the Drop and Tragic Fact!!
No matter if it’s the live performance or the cast recording or if I’ve heard it a million times, Noel’s falsetto at the end of his song always impresses me
Edit: I’m starting to realize part of why I love Mischa so much is because he bounces around so much during his little monologue before his song and I also bounce around when I’m getting emotional or passionate about things
Loved it❤
If you’re looking for any more musicals, I cannot reccomend Bandstand enough, one of my favourites. The songs are fantastic, and if you watch the recording, you’ll see they’re all playing their own instruments.
She Loves Me is also another very good pick if you want more of a funny romantic comedy via some penpal miscommunications.
The characters are so loveable in both!
"Do Noel and Mischa have a thing?"
According to Noel's actor, maybe🤭
Yes!!! I’m so glad you reacted to the show!! The Ballad of Jane Doe is definitely jaw dropping no matter how many times you watch it. 😂
I’m so sad I didn’t get to see your immediate reaction to Noel and mischa’s kiss in Noel’s lament
Seeing her pure elation and zeal brings me joy. It’s nice seeing someone feel what I felt, and go through the same thoughts, it’s lovely.
This is just a personal opinion, but you made me want to share my thoughts as well :D
I'm also disabled, and I think there was potential here for sure.
I feel weird that I got an amusement park ad on this video...
All I'll say is, DON'T GO to that amusement park!!!
I love watching peoples reaction to Jane flying while singing.
Emily Rohm is truly amazing.
SHE TRULY IS
Mishcha and Noel’s interactions are so cute ❤
His final insight HAD to have been "don't ride the cyclone"
i’m still patiently waiting for that Fun Home reaction, i’ve been saying this for over a year for sure😂
Aaaaaahh coming 2023 for sure
I’m so excited especially because its one of the few shows where you can get most of the story from the album
@@averynerdybookworm972 yeah exactly, like you basically get the whole show and all context that’s needed all in the album
I WANTED THIS SINCE THE FIRST RTC VIDEO AHHHH TYSM
Thank you for being so excited about it!!
There are 5 diffrent versions of the opening number thats why the cast recording one is different
6 actually.
Tragic Fact (2008-2013)
Keep That Dream Inside (original 2015 song made in 2014)
The Fall Fair Suite 1.0 (2015)
Fall Fair Suite 2.0/Minor Turn (2016)
Waiting For The Drop (2018)
Uranium Suite (2019-)
I don’t know if anyone pointed this out, you might already know, but the reason the opening was different in the cast recording and the slime tutorial is because they’re actually two completely different songs, Fall Fair Suite and Uranium Suite. There are two other openings, Waiting for the Drop and Tragic Fact that were also used briefly, but by far the longest-running opening was Fall Fair. There’s a lot of debate in the fandom about which of the four is best but Fall Fair always seems to win in any debate.
29:35 I’M SO MAD YOU CUT OUT “we’re listening to you now space jesus”
12:24 I’m currently obsessed with the Percy Jackson musical, using toilet paper instead of water was an interesting option but it works
I love PJO in general, haven't gotten to watch the musical yet, is it on TH-cam?
@@Pokiandiit is, it was deleted kinda recently after four years but someone else uploaded another recording
@@DinoandGalaxy ooh thank you!
@@Barbara2.0 As far as I know, aside from this version and the album version there's one more called "Waiting For The Drop"
It's also important to note the difference between wanting a bad relationship and fantasizing about a bad relationship.
I also prefer Fall Fair Suite to Uranium Suite. It gives so much more insight and the orchestration is so beautiful
Ricky is a great character I love him so much.
I'm really excited about Alice by Heart, it's on the list ;)
I love ABH, but it’s definitely a hard one to follow through the soundtrack. I legit had no idea what the plot was about for ages because the bootleg was really rare at the time 😂 definitely think she should react to the bootleg
Hmmmm kinda like the challenge though... hahaha
@@Barbara2.0 …Ok on second thought, I would be curious to see how well you can piece it together. You definitely understood Ride the Cyclone better than I did on my first listen lol
Am I the only one who thought Jane Doe's shadow made it look like she had angel wings?
I know its been a few days but I also HIGHLY suggest the mccarter theatre version too!! most (if not all) the people involved are different and its a slightly different take on some songs! there's a few different versions in the songs too and I think you'd enjoy it!
The reason Karnak gave them a chance to com back I because he feels bad that he could've stopped them but didn't.
man i always cry constantly for the last 20 or so mins of the musical i love it so muchhh
One of my favorite things is that with every song, so much personality is conveyed in how they move. Like they are all dorky teenagers dancing and showing themselves in the ways they think makes them look ‘cool’.
I love their interactions (especially with Karnak), because it’s like a family dynamic that is wholesome
Space age bachelor man in the musical is SO different from the cast recording and I must say, the live versions sound 100x better than the studio versions in my opinion
The show truly elevates most of the songs, it's a really different experience from listening to the cast recording
@@Barbara2.0 it’s so high energy in the show and I love it. Amazing musical
My college is doing this next year and I’m very excited
Sweet! Break a leg :)
Thank you so much, lovely!! Makes me happy that you're enjoying the videos 😊 And yes, I get excited very easily hahaha
lol i have the same birthday as Mischa
I love this video and your insight it's awesome. Some other shows that I'd love to see you react to. Spongebob musical, urinetown, 25th annual putnam county spelling bee, Drowsy Chaperone, bring it on, kinky boots, wind in the willows 2017.
Thank you, Connor! Glad you enjoyed it 😊 And nice to see most of those suggestions are already on the list, will add the others
YESSS OMGGG you have amazing taste!!!
ever since i watch rtc, ive came up with a game; drink everytime ricky says something. you'll not get very drunk, if u dont count the songs
ride the cyclone’s one of, if not, my favourite musical(s) ever but ricky’s always bothered me a little. i like the character, don’t get me wrong, but it’s weird that the play portrays him like there’s no reason for him to go back because of his disability, like his life wasn’t worth living in the first place. it might even be the biggest issue the play has because otherwise it’s fantastic but it really irks me.

Daughter, wife and friend/daughter went to see the show in New Hampshire last year. A different theatre advertised putting on a show somewhat closer to home, and my wife told daughter's friend, who tried out and got to be Ocean in the production. :)
Gotta say, the show's rendition of Sugar Cloud was amazing.
