I like watching your channel for years!!! It makes me feel good that every time I do a boat project I'm not the only one dealing with other people bad decisions on stuff they did before!!! Also being aircraft mechanic when doing my boats makes me over do it lol. Every boat i have done always has old wires left in bundles, drives me crazy lol. Great project bro, that be a 40k boat here in Hawaii after rebuild!! Just built up a 2000 outrage 18 w/ 200 yamaha , been putting hundreds of lbs of tuna and marlin on it lately!! Last trip we got 3 marlins on by 9am check it out!!!
Grounds are the bane of my existence… I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to chase faulty grounds because something has stopped working that was working yesterday. That and copper wire, meaning not marine grade.
When pulling wires, point your wires. In other words strip back some insulation stagger the wires. Make two half hitches on the very end with a string end and tape with white electrical tape so that you can find the end of the tape, and if you’re working on a yacht with white carpet, you don’t get black tape residue on the carpet. Never use black tape. If you suspect if the wire run is going to be difficult lube up the wires and pull them through the wire run. As far as your VHF make a trim, ring of black starboard, and pick the radio of your choice rather than the hole in the dash.
A close second place with these live well and washdown pumps is the harness connector where the boat's harness meets the whip from the pump. Many boat manufacturers use a quick clip on the connection. In the past year, seen several pumps not work for not only myself on my own boat, but also for several friends. The flat 2-pole waterproof quick connect will sometimes pull apart, even though the connection's locking clip is engaged, sometimes just the weight of the hanging harness is enough to pull them apart and cause a short. I have begun testing these connections before replacing a pump because 1 out of 4 times, it's that connector that's bad. A simple zip tie around the connector to keep the plug held tight fixes the issue.
Always good stuff, I'm literally rewiring an entire boat so this is informational GOLD for me. Ripping out the old stuff is almost therapeutically satisfying but looking forward to knowing everything will be new and clean one I'm done. Thanks for the vids man.
Gday mate with my last resto and the others i just pull everything out , some of the shonky work you find is amazing for my last one i bought 2 rolls of new tinned cable and new connectors and just started fresh ,i havent got the paitence to be stuffing around with backyard bobs wiring jobs , i always use tinned marine wire on my boats if saltwater gets into normal stuff it will just eat it away . Anyway like your paitence and perseverance for me and i know it would cost i would have replaced all those switches you dont know how old they are or how much water has gotton into them anyway cant wait to see how this turns out .
You really do a great job with the wiring. Keeping it neat and clean. You inspired me and I made my CC wiring and placement of my house battery and fuse block as neat and professional as I could. I also will be adding a fuse block and battery box for my start battery / house battery.
Absolutely, marring wires and stuff, everything on the boat is moving lol I think it's something a lot of people over look, screws, clamps, and all kinds of stuff that'll rub a mark in a wire. Rough stuff to have to diagnose later lol
It’s amazing how time consuming wiring issue are. And think of all the people running around in the ocean with older boats that have no clue about wiring and those issues
I’m sorry but I would’ve took time to shift that Garmin mount and filled some holes but that’s the way I roll. Mounting amp on vinyl not good heat problems. You’re doing a real good job, I’d expect more out Boston Whaler company than that crap.
Thourally enjoy watching u and listening to ur ideas, this boat will be credit to all ur hard work. U also help us novices to take on our own dig issues. Thanks for sharing 🇦🇺🤘🇺🇸
16/2 would be fine, that's about as small as I really like to go, 18/2 will work, but then you start calculating distances and then having super small heat shrink connectors. I l just like the 16/2 so we don't have to have tons of different wire on hand, 16/2, 14/2 and then 2, 4, and 6 gauge red and black lol simple :) LED's don't need much power, but its dealing with that small wire :/ lol
Thank you, Aaron, for all the great videos and knowledge! Small detail, but I'm wondering what you (and others) recommend as the best stick-on cable tie mounts? I see the ones you are using at 4:53 of this video - do they stay stuck on? Do you use a particular glue, or just the adhesive they come with? Thanks!!!
I'd rather put screws in the holders, but I like these type of holders: amzn.to/3ClCOs5 And if using another one and glueing them on, I've had success so far using this cynocrylate: amzn.to/48Ni60o
Helpful Hint: AFTER prepping the wires to pull, get a cloth and some Black Magic and lightly coat the wires, they will pull MUCH easier and hang up less. As a bonus the Black Magic helps extend the life of the wire insulation.
How do you like the seachoice battery cables? Do they feel quality? I’ve worked on boats for the last 17+ yrs and found that seachoice can be hit or miss on quality. I usually use ancor for electrical but it’s super expensive. Kinda want to try seachoice and see how good it is. I love the seachoice shrink butt connectors.
I'm with you on that, the heat shrink connectors and some of the other stuff is great, I really stick with Anchor or Cobra for the wiring, but honestly, if you get a Port Supply account with West Marine and get the volume up to get into the 2nd or 1st tier, VIP or whatever they call it, the one is spending 20K a year the other is like 10K or something per year. The Anchor wire is cheaper than anything else! It's a great deal, seachoice was just the only choice in this instance lol quality seemed alright, the sheathing didn't seem to work as well though, like pulling it back after cutting it and what not :/ so time will tell with that
Im working on an old 1979 bass boat. Its in fairly good condition but this is all new to me. I cant even figure out where the ground is. The previous owner botched some of the wiring. Im also working on the motor. 2 stroke mercury blackmax. Hoping to get it on the water soon and slowly re wire everything and customize some stuff. Who can afford a 50k starting boat right now? Not me.
Hi, I was wondering what you thought about the cheaper hydraulic steering system like vevor? If there worth it or you should just stay with mechanical steering?
Hi, I'm a DIY lover and I get a lot of ideas from your videos for my little boat (open 5.90), I wanted to congratulate you, if you allow me, I'd like to ask you what material do you use on the busbar? at minute 25.12 of the video, thank you for your attention. John
Let me give you some seriously important advice. Stop ever allowing for any connection place in a wet environment-period. Run your 14/2 runs INDIVIDUALLY FROM the forward compartment to EACH AFT DEVICE! Yes, that will entail multiple runs via stuffing tubes. But, once you heat shrink epoxy filled connection terminals CORRECTLY on all the END connections on the devices, you stop ALL wiring corrosion issues. Obviously you stop all those STUPID ground issues too. Now, if possible, move those damn batteries forward in that dry compartment too. If you can’t, then run the 4ga now upgraded to 2gauge power cables (pos & neg) forward and feed a sexy new reasonable priced 12v distribution panel from there! You will have an upcharge on the parts but SAVE IN LABOR. Also, your work, parts, customer --will thank you for years!! Now…. Number two, get a heat gun and heat the black hose-ends and the loosen up and you can push them on your barbed fittings. -stop using white sealant!!
@BornAgainBoating such a versatile tool with endless uses. I almost feel naked without it. Did you know that you can cut stainless steel cable on the underside of the pliers.
2 steps forward and 3 steps back some days. When I get frustrated with finding more work than what I started with best thing for me is walk away for 15 minutes or grab a sandwich.

Yeah, that's exactly why I've always been partial to just cutting them out and using butt connectors lol :)

That's awesome! Wish you the best with it :)
Nice work cleaning the rat's nest that someone created. Looking great!

Love watching a Master of his craft at work. Looks great! And you fix what needs to be fixed instead of turning your head like you never seen it

I know it's pretty basic but putting electrical tape around the hose clamp to I assume prevent marring was pretty slick.
Absolutely, marring wires and stuff, everything on the boat is moving lol I think it's something a lot of people over look, screws, clamps, and all kinds of stuff that'll rub a mark in a wire. Rough stuff to have to diagnose later lol
I thoroughly enjoy your videos and I have learned a lot. Thank you very much.
Thank you! You're welcome!
Love how you explain everything in detail, I appreciate it.

For sure!
Try using some pulling lube or some liquid soap when pulling the wires. Love watching your videos!
been a while since i got recommended one of your videos, glad you made playlists cause the titles don't match up.
Love how switches are designed to light up even if the pump is not running.
Yeah............🤔🤬
What size wire do you recommend for led lighting? Flood lights and small accent lights? LEDs of course.
16/2 would be fine, that's about as small as I really like to go, 18/2 will work, but then you start calculating distances and then having super small heat shrink connectors. LED's don't need much power, but its dealing with that small wire :/ lol
Great content. Keep ‘‘em coming!!!
I have those Bait Sentry pumps on my boat here in Sydney. You always know when they’re running because they sound like a bucket of bolts.
Lol I know right lol
Better be right buddy. Your the last one to touch it "YOU DID IT " whether you did it or not!!! been there.

I hate pulling wires by my self! Its doable just a unnecessary hassle!

Hey Aaron what Snap-on meter is that? Slick how you can power switches with it. I wasn't finding it on their site.
Got a part number for that?
shop.snapon.com/product/Digital-Display-Circuit-Testers/Multi-Probe-Ultra/EECT900
EECT900
what are you using on your rag to clean up that extra caulking?
Just soapy water lol :)
Hi, I was wondering what you thought about the cheaper hydraulic steering system like vevor? If there worth it or you should just stay with mechanical steering?
What 14/2 wire are you using ? I know that they need to be Tinned Copper, but what quality of product do you use?
I like Ancor: amzn.to/4hhoSz2

Hey! Awesome, thank you! And it's liquid electrical tape: amzn.to/3YgoIPY

Every boat you work on, regardless of manufacturer, is going to have issues. Sh!t happens. 😅
with all the rotten black wire you’re finding, I’m wondering if someone didn’t use marine grade wire?
It's all original wiring so :/ who knows!
wowzer, I didn’t want to think that. Maybe purchasing went with a cheaper bidder.
What happened to the other boat that's in your yard?
I gotta fix some gel coat scratches on the outside hull and waiting for registration to get here so I can put it in the water :)
What speakers head unit and amp is being installed?
Stereo: amzn.to/3Ue92eN
Speakers: amzn.to/3zUH8O9
Amp: amzn.to/4dNqXQo
How good is the supertool 300
Dude I love it! Lol use to fix the majority of stuff on the boat before having to get my tools out lol ;)

Right :)
Yea i used to do that but turned out i did it too much too often and got fat.. so now i cant take any breaks without wanting to eat something..
that pump sounded pretty rough anyway
Yeah idk why those always sound like that lol :/
What happened to the guy you were working with for a while?
He's working with a mobile marine company doing mobile work right now
man the more you dig into this boston whaler the more i realize they are janky as hell lol
