I rode several times from Poway to Santa Ana in the late 70s. They would let bicyclists ride thru Camp Pendleton. It looks like you bypassed Pendleton by riding the I-5? Times change.
If you search for Pendleton Road-Gate-Status there is a video with information on not being able to get a bike pass until the Visitor Center (Building 20255T) construction is completed.
I’m doing a century with a route very similar to this in a group of 6, I called Camp Pendleton and they require a bike pass to go through. But you must go to visitor’s center ahead of time with a REAL ID (with yellow star) we are planning on bypassing by going on I-5. Thanks for the video! Great guide.

I live in the Pasadena area and have ridden the San Gabriel River Trail to Seal Beach from Whittier Narrows several times, and recognized that part of your trip, as well as your ride through downtown L.A. and Little Tokyo. I noticed that you were carrying some signifcant gear so did you camp outdoors in San Clemente and La Jolla (and La Mesa)? Thanks for sharing your ride.
Thanks! I did, there's some camp spots just outside of San Clemente.. You have to book them way in advance but in a pinch, you could show up past 5pm and leave before 7am 😉
@@davierc Is that because after 5pm theres nobody to check in with? Curious bc I am planning this ride and want to camp as well but saw there are no spots available when I want to go..

@@ah5474 When traveling south on Old Pacific Highway Trail instead of making a left on Las Pulgas Rd towards the base gate, make a right and take that freeway entrance. Here is where I was turned away and had to take the first freeway entrance: maps.app.goo.gl/EuuMF24F7dYr559g7?g_st=ic The staff on duty that day mentioned I could pass through if I had a national issued id, not local government like a california driver license, more like a passport card I’ve heard mixed things from other people that have done the same ride that it’s pretty hit or miss, depends on their mood and the weather if they’ll let you through haha. I broke up the trip into these 3 days: - Day1: Downtown Los Angeles -> San Clemente - 70 Miles - www.strava.com/activities/7744030301 - Day 2: San Clemente -> La Jolla - 50 Miles - www.strava.com/activities/7744023550 - Day 3: La Jolla -> La Mesa - 30 Miles - www.strava.com/activities/7748141473 The only thing I'd change would be; from DTLA to San Clemente, take the LA river path instead of the San Gabriel river path and see all of Long Beach. I took the shorter route since I wanted to make it to San Clemente in one day. Depending on where in San Diego you're finishing up your ride, I'd consider splitting up Day 1 into two days. Specially if you're carrying camping gear and doubly so if it's the hottest week of the year haha. You have to make San Clemente one of the resting spots, it's such a nice town with good food! You're going to have a ton of fun! Good luck!
Those cars are going very fast and they're passing very close to you. To make matters worse, cars are parked along the road. When I was young, I didn't worry about things like that. But as an old guy I think about them a lot. The state does not provide an adequate condition for cyclists to travel along that corridor.
@deezynar Video never really captures speed adequately. The cars definitely felt faster than they appear in the video. My bike wiggled after each passing car 😅. Not a good feeling. I'm with you on the danger part. My tolerance for it has dwindled the older I'm getting. I might have not done it had I known. The Strava app never mentioned anything about riding on the freeway haha

I'm glad that you posted this, it provides great information. I rode a lot when I was in my 20s, and also took a couple tours. My tolerance for cars passing me that close is not what it used to be.

It's currently closed due to the visitor's center being under construction. Should be able to get a bike pass around June.
