This show is literally the peak of animated Batman. The design and art style is timeless.
The characters also had a ton of depth and complexity. Heart of ice is a beautiful episode or the one where Poison Ivy has a family. The characters felt real and relatable.
not only animated. Everything was right, from music scenario, character deepth and dev, photography and cinematography. It was masterpiece.

I came back here to pay my respects. I’m truly heartbroken. Many greats have portrayed the Dark Knight but there was only one who was the definitive voice of Batman and that was Kevin Conroy. Batman will never be the same. RIP Kevin and thank you for everything!
How you know it wasn't a toxic environment:
1. Nobody takes credit.
2. Everyone praises the efforts/credits others for the project's success.
3. Everyone humbly suggests luck was on their side.

@@TerraExodus Because you oversimplify it. Fighting for it, as you put it, rests upon the studio to agree. They're not obligated to agree with anything. It is their money and, therefore, they have full discretion. Unlike Disney with the MCU, who don't care about art and impact, they are doing short-sighted cash grabs, and know it. The WB at that time, with the huge push from Spielberg, were enticed to take a risk with no precedent. A group of children in the 90s could have never asked for such an enduring work of art to be presented to them. The WB went completely above and beyond in delivering this product.

When I read joker's dialogues in the comics I hear mark Hamill's joker voice. Same for Kevin Conroy

Ya know I never really read comics when I was a kid. So like many Batman T.A.S was,aside from T.Burt's Live Action Masterpiece of course, my exposure to the Caped Crusader.
That coupled with the fact that Batman was and always will be my favorite super hero, now anytime my brain conjures up a voice for an unknown male hero/protagonist it's always K.Conroy's B.Man by default!!! 😂 If it's a Female then it's Adrienne Barbeau's(Catwoman) voice.

For me it depends on the era. When I read Golden Age to Silver Age Batman, I hear the voices of the Adam West TV show. Everything after that, I hear TAS and Arkham voices.
The joker forever sounds like mark hamill in my head. Nothing else comes close.

@@lordofthesithvader9430 It did for a lot of people! I grew up reading the JL comics but it was great to see people embrace these lesser known DC characters at the time. It’s basically what Marvel is doing with the MCU now in addition to their heavy hitters. DC has the blueprint for success with the Bruce Timm stuff.

I would say it's a member of the big 3. I would not rank one above the others as they were all great. BTAM, X-Men, and Spiderman TAS are the gold standards of superhero cartoons

I was born in 85 so Cartoons in the early 90’s got watched. Was never a Batman or any comic book kid. But, this show was awesome. Always had to watch it when it came on. I remember an episode with 2 face and it was a little scary. 😂
“Batman: The Animated Series” is truly one of the greatest animated shows that have ever made. I still see myself as a first grader when I first was introduced to Batman, seeing the animated series was such an unforgettable experience. The show’s art style is absolutely fantastic, the voice work sounds so real, and the tone is beyond mature. The people who made the animated series were truly an ambitious crew, and their efforts really made the animated series as iconic as we all know it to be; while proving that future animators can be just as successful in this industry!
Its still the best cartoon to date and im not willing to entertain a debate on that. And i will include anime into that since all anime is is the easte trying to do american stuff.

I was in late middle school and highschool when that big two hour block of cartoons starting at 3pm was making us all rush home from school to not miss Batman. We were the last generation of kids who were the ones who ran home to see a favorite program pre internet and long before streaming whatever you want whenever you like (which is TH-cam)
I think the animated series is better than any of the Batman movies or other animations. The music, the art deco and film noir style. The storylines covered serious and complex topics. It was perfect. I'm glad that they didn't make it another goofy kid's show.
I never realized how lucky I was to have experienced Batman: TAS from the get go. I loved how his story continued and tied in with Justice League and Batman Beyond.

Same here. From Adam West's reruns, to the 70's cartoons, to Super Friends, to Burton's, to this and Beyond (literary). Also I remember the expectations when the Batman & Superman Adventures lead to World's Finest and there the JL. The current DC animation world is good and all, but it'll NEVER compare to this art masterpiece.

Right there with you. I had my VCR set to record it everyday while I was at work and I would put it on as soon as I got home. That opening sequence is probably the best opening title sequence out of all the cartoons I've ever seen in my life, and that includes my beloved GI Joe.

If only the writers of the animated stuff could deal with the live action stuff. Literal perfection and a TRUE representation of the characters
Nolan trilogy can be in this level, but tas is just a masterpiece. The only thing it could be this level was the arkham games series.
I truly believe that the animated series is the best rendition of Batman to date. I love the series as a teen, and love it even better as an adult.
I just met *Kevin Conroy* recently at a con, and told him pretty much thank you for my childhood and how all the Batman projects he does mean so much to me.
He's an awesome guy.

The whole Shirley Walker section caught me off guard. She wrote her own music, conducted the orchestra and, I mean, just hearing what everyone had to say about her and her contribution... it really choked me up.

I watched these as a very young child in Pakistan on a VCR. Now 25years on I've found the same series online! What a childhood/adulthood 🥲👌
This show was very groundbreaking. It created Harley Quinn, wrote Mr Freeze’s tragic backstory, humanised the majority of the villains (Two-Face, Clayface, etc), gave us the definitive voices of Batman and the Joker and kickstarted an animated universe.

Freeze was the best. I still remember being 5 at toys r us a few weeks after Heart of Ice aired in 92 and finding the Mr freeze action figure, it was like a mini Xmas for me

30 years later and I can say without a doubt that they pulled it off masterfully. Best animated series ever created. Eat your heart out Avatar... Even tho I am just a big of fan of that series too as I am with Batman TAS.
Man, we were blessed with some good animation from 1990-2015.
My son is four. I grew up loving batman. We burned out so many vhs tapes of the original batman. Now all on his own he has found a love for batman. We really enjoy the batman animated series. I remeber all the episodes and the flashbacks I get watching with him just ties it all together. The story. The characters. One of the best batman
Have to give Avatar credit though for creating all that lore for the show whereas Batman had the privilege of using a character and world fleshed out by decades worth of fantastic comic books

Avatar is a better overall show. Batman has a much more interesting vibe, but Avatar told a whole story from start to finish and really had a special feel to it resonates with people.

I was a child, talked to my mother about the show today and how it introduces morals and the dark of the world to children in a such a easily conceivable way.

Honestly, with the exception of Beware the Batman, I pretty much love the other batman shows like BTAS, Brave and the Bold, and even The Batman had a really dope styl.

THE best Batman show of all time.
My dad before he died a few years before my HS graduation at 64, loved this series. One of the few shows/movies intended for kids that he'd watch. He was into to it too and would laugh at the clever verbal exchange between the villain and Batman. The dialogue was brilliant. I don't think many animated series come close.
You know you've hit the nail on the head when fans read a comic/novel and hear the voices from this show. It is truly remarkable.

I was already a Batman fan because of his appearance and how dark he was in comics. The Batman Animated Series demonstrated why Batman is my favorite superhero. Without this show, there is no Avengers, no Dark Knight, and no X-men. This show changed everything forever. The greatest animated series ever.
I'm so glad the creators and everyone who worked in this project didn't hold back. Like Bruce tim mentioned that they wanted it to be for kids and adults. Batman the animated series is one of the best shows out there. This show was really ahead of its time. My favorite episode to this day is perchance to dream. Thank you warner bros. For making this happen, thank you Andrea Romano, Bruce tim , Paul dini for creating this show.

Andrea Romano was far more important to this series than often recognized, that method of directing voice actors all in one room like a radio teleplay definitely adds to the 30s-40s feel. There's actually a Mercury Theater method there... and Shirley Walker's magnificent score...

That whole dark film noir drawn on dark paper perfected the feeling they were trying to convey, I think. Including the merging of times both modern and retro... everything about this series will always transcend time. It officially set the bar in its time, and it has yet to be superseded. I don't believe it will. Them's some large shoes to fill, indeed.

My younger brother and I used to literally run home as fast as we could from school to catch the animated batman series . Absolutely fantastic memory's .
I grew up with this series and it was my first ever introduction to Batman anything.
I am now 35 years old and let me just say: Kevin, Mark and all voice actors, you were my first w/those characters. They will ALWAYS have your voices to me. ❤

I grew up with this series during its original run and it shaped me as an artist. Between this show, the '90s Disney Renaissance, and Fox Feature Animation, it's all the origin of my drawing style now as a 30-something adult working as an illustrator.
Back in 2007 when I was working on my senior illustration thesis in art school, I had just received a fancy boxed set of the entire BTAS on DVD that Christmas, and I had it playing on the TV next to my desk the entire semester I was working on that thesis. So not only is BTAS linked to my childhood development as an artist, it's also connected to my becoming an adult by finishing school and becoming a professional artist.
Formative is an understatement for me.

"Batman the Animated Series" was awesome and "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" was the best Batman animated movie.
Special Salute to Shirley Walker.
Her amazing scores brought the intense drama of the animation to life because not only the technicality of the music but it captured FEELING of the incredible scenes from the frenzy of battle to beautiful delicacy of deep emotions to Silence.
Passion of everyone involved made this show what it was. A masterpiece
I absolutely loved the 1940's Film Noir look the show had. I had never seen a cartoon like that before. I loved the style and confidence of the women, and I rooted for Bruce so much! I remember The Scarecrow really scaring me growing up. This show (and not the movies) also really developed my love for Catwoman and Poison Ivy. For me, they haven't been matched by any of the movies (so far).
That's the look the movies need to capture.
I have always liked the Noir look but this series made me fall in LOVE with it!
The Gotham architecture is more like 1920s reminds me of that old 20s sci-fi metropolis

90s Batman was SO good for the time, even my parents watched it. The art style, the characters voices, and they also hadn’t seen a new Batman show since the 80s. I still watch this series to this day, in a way you could say it changed my life.
Is pretty interesting how things snowballed. You get Frank Miller and Alan Moore doing Batman in the 80s, then Tim Burton making the movies and this team doing the animated series. This whole very adult and very sophisticated approach to these characters which has helped build all of what we see. There are many others as well. The original Superman movies and many of the early comics. Now it's amazing to see what has come of that legacy.
Probably the perfect adaptation of Batman

The WORSE adaption of Batman...PICK UP A COMIC BOOK.
This really hit me harder than I thought it would. It really feels like Batman himself has passed away.
What’s crazy is the ammount of work put into this and the love the series generated. And yet this was just the beginning. With Superman, then justice league, static shock, batman beyond, and more. 30+ years of Warner animation hitting it out of the park with shows and movies that all started with these artists. The MCU, arrow verse, and a hopefully revitalized DCEU all owe at least part of their success to this crew that brought superhero’s to the modern audience. It’s what so many of us grew up on. It’s why Harley was such a breakout character. Why mister freeze is more than a joke. Why mark hamil became a household name for a second time. It revitalized tv animation after years of hannah Barbara and others sucked all the creativity and fun out of it. I would say it’s even more important than the Disney renaissance since at least this has lasted, while classic Disney animation is dead.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this show into the classic that it shall always remain. Without you, who knows how much less the world would be. I sure don’t want to know.
This show was so groundbreaking when it aired on Fox Kids tv back in 1992. The dark deco animation is the key to the show's success. For Batman: TAS it's the quality in storytelling and getting the right people which was shear luck and everything fell in place perfectly. For a fiction show you felt the stories were real because of the mature storytelling process. Disney's Gargoyles originally was supposed to be a comedy but glad it went to a serious tone and it's success was definitely from due Batman: TAS.
Gargoyles was great until ABC executives ruined their final season. They also messed up Real Ghostbusters with bad voice changes and Korean studios.

Kevin Conroy was always destined to be Batman. In college, his roommate was Robin Williams. Batman and Robin.
Christopher Reeve was almost his roommate, but he ended up with Robin. Them 3 were all friends.

What a sad year this has been, losing Kevin Conroy (Batman), then Arlene Sorkin (Harley Quinn), and just recently Richard Moll (Two-Face)! Thanks to all of them for making this the best-ever animated series. You will all be missed!
The amount of collaboration between so many talented people is such a powerful Testament left by this show. It really took everyone from the writers to the artists to the actors, and to the directors/producers working together to make such a masterpiece! 🔥🔥🔥

I started watching Batman The Animated Series when I was age 2 and I still enjoy it to this day. There aren't too many things I did at that age that I am still doing today. This series is definitely a cornerstone of my inner psychosis. Once in a very rare while, the stars align and pure perfection manifests itself. 'Batman' is one of those times. Bravo. Astounding. Magnificent. Impactful. These words come to mind and can most definitely be associated with this fabulous show but at the end of the day, they are but mere words. For no words can ever express my sincere gratification to those who forged this program. One day my future child will also experience the magic of, "Batman The Animated Series".

Just because you are good in one medium (animation) doesn't mean it translates well in another (live action).
Adopting live action from a cartoon is skill within itself, in the cartoon world there are things we let slide since it's within the realm of the imagination but that doesn't necessarily translate well on the silver screen.

Best Batman Animated series "EVER"!. I have this whole collection on DVD. Grewup watching this as a kid, loved the mature story line, and clean animation almost like anime. It was honestly ahead of its time. Great sound scores and voice acting.
This show was definitely a defining moment in Animated series history it was so Well crafted world wise and storylines such as “heart of ice” really got you thinking maybe villains ain’t always the bad guy but this show is a masterpiece and a timeless classic.
Mask of the phantasm had probably the greatest backdrop art in us 2D animation history
Siskel and Ebert considered it shameful that they didnt watch the movie in theaters and made an episode just to praise how well it was made

i remember watching it after school/ before school every day i could, and i felt exactly like that. most animated series had ridiculous actions and wooden dialogue, Batman TAS literally made me feel like i was batman, in the haunting and beautiful noir world they created, i was truly a lucky child.

Dark Deco! I've been trying to put a name to this style since I was a kid in the 90's! So much cool stuff the black paper backgrounds were an amazing touch.

There are tons of great shows out there?? What are you talking about? Tv has been getting better and better at least before covid and everything slowed down ... I don't get people in this comment section acting as if dcau isn't still making regular movies that are great ... Or that tv isn't good anymore?? It's like people that say music sucks these days...but don't realize if you search for it you can still find tons of great new bands for what ever genre you want ...

@@The_Rude_French_Canadian Batman TAS was an exception to the rule in how good it is, which is exactly the theme of this short documentary. I grew up with this show and there are very few shows from that time as good as Batman TAS. These days we have things like Avatar, Arcane, BoJack Horseman and loads of others. Everything wasn't better back in the day and telling yourself otherwise is keeping yourself from seeing the genuinely good content that's being created.
At the time, I was right in the target demo for this show and I absolutely *loved* it. I'd watch every day after school. I adored this show. It definitely stood out against all the other shows that were on. Such high quality and so unique. All the risks that they took with the show (the darkness, the art deco style, the more mature tone, the orchestra) are the exact qualities that drew me in as a kid. So fantastic.
This is the core of this generation's childhood. Brings memories of saturday morning's matathons and hours of play with your toys recreating the fight scenes you kust saw. It's just magical.
Shirley Walker needs more recognition as a musical genius.
Can we thank BTAS crew, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Andrea Romano for casting Mark Hamil? Therefore giving us the most visually stunning Joker with equally memorable lines?!

Animated television (Teen Titans, Last Airbender, Clone Wars, etc.) would never be where it is today without this show

I used to tape every episode because this show was very special to me. It stayed in my head for years afterwards. Heart of Ice especially. Thankyou for the series and this BTS.
Kevin Conroy’s portrayal of Batman, and the brilliant writing of the series...kind of defined my childhood. It was so much more than a cartoon-it was a masterclass in storytelling, problem solving and dealt with complex issues. As a kid, I had no issue following along and I think those elements are missing in most modern animation. I enjoyed this special so much…every person involved blended together so well and clearly loved being a part of the process. I hope they (and their families) understand the impact they made on my generation and those to come.
As a musician, I have to say the theme for this Batman series is the best even to this day…Shirley Walker created masterpieces and brought scenes to life. Watching this made me tear up.
So many unsung heroes involved. I’m glad we can give you the flowers you all deserve.
They made this despite "...I might get fired tomorrow". CW needs to learn from them. They had a great opportunity for a DC TV universe and they made a joke out of it.
They had such a strong beginning before giving in to doing soap opera style storylines. Arrow season 1 and flash season 1 are still great but they lost that magic as they went
@@mattfan5 yeah its because they cared to tell a story at the first few seasons but the moment my GRANDMA told me she liked the new arrow season, i knew something went horribly wrong

The show is what happens when you throw the words "Dark", "Comic accurate", "Woke", "CGI", "R-rated" , "streaming service" into a production blender without context and hope for the best.
The show has no heart, What's worse, it's not even low budget.

This show is a master piece of animation and storytelling. The voice cast is amazing, Kevin Conroy is the true Batman. This show will never be forgotten. 🦇
I just want to thank everyone involved with this show for LITERALLY making my childhood. It can only be described as a masterpiece.
Rewatching in honor of the legend
This show was a cornerstone of my childhood. It's one of the best animated shows ever produced and pretty much set the standard for all Batman animated content ever since.
This was the Batman I grew up with, I was 5 when it started. It was a masterpiece, even my father thought so this was the one Saturday cartoon he would watch with me and my brother. Mr. Freeze was my favorite.
My mom would watch it with me and my siblings 😁 I have rewatched it on hbo
I was in my early 20s when this show was on. And I remember vividly just before I moved out of my parents house, I was had a day off of work, and was in my parents livingroom, watching BTAS. My dad came home from work, sat on the couch to take his work boots off watching with me, and I didnt even notice, but he was entranced. After the show was done (and for the life of me I cannot remember which episode was on) my dad, who grew up on the Adam West batman, said 'Jesus. That was REALLY good. Where did this come from?!?" He was legit stunned at how good this show was. and made it a point to watch it every time it was on, even if I wasnt there. This is how good this show was.
Later, with my own kids, I had bought the box set, and just sat in the livingroom binging it. all 4 of my kids, (ages 13 to 4) ended up in the living room watching with me. and my oldest said to me 'Wow. This shows really good, dad." And they were hooked. The DCAU had the best versions of all of these characters outside of the comics. Period. And BTAS started it all.
The incredibleness of the musical scores is underappreciated.
Masterpiece in storytelling, passion in acting and portrayal of the characters, and the animation. WB studio would succeed in their live action DC universe with these individuals.
Thank you DC for this documentary. Batman: The Animated Series was the one series that introduced me to the character of Batman, the Burton movies and the Adam West live serie came after. Shootout for the beautiful electronic music.
This is why I love creative people, we think outside of the box...I just wish the business "suits" would see things our way and meet us in the middle sometimes. Imagine with a proper budget and a room full of talent coming up with revolutionary and innovative ideas. Everything is a constant evolution of the things we know and love.
