@Isaac Altman That's just your opinion. I see where Davis is coming from and I agree. What makes Christopher Reeve better than George Reeves, Dean Cain, Brandon Routh, Tom Welling or Kirk Alyn?
Marvel heroes are defined by their flaws. They have virtues, but their flaws are why we read the stories. To me, DC is at its best when it's the opposite. DC heroes are defined by their virtues. They have flaws, but the virtues should be why we read.
I'm not sure I agree with this statement. Green Arrow, Batman, and Roy Harper are characters whose flaws overshadow their goodness much of the time. Those are just three that I can think of off the top of my head. Raven is another one.
MrRoMaGi I like to think that as well. When it comes to DC’s characters the likes of Batman, Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman, etc., gives off a sorta mythical and legendary status towards them like the Greek/Roman gods. However with Marvel characters, it heavily relies more on personal sympathy and sometimes even empathy towards the viewer; you expect heroes such as Thor, Captain America, the Fantastic Four, or the X-Men to be more distant and grandiose due to their power and influence but they are usually portrayed in the opposite by showing how easily they can be beaten down. Spider-Man is easily the best example of a character anybody can relate to.
I watch this every now and again despite knowing it by heart. I could just listen to voices like Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison and Neal Adams talk DC all day.

I am not an American , but DC comics played a great role during my childhood and teenage years. They were expensive but we had shops where we could buy secondhand and then could exchange them too. Later I started reading in French. In France they come in hardcover. Got hooked on Tintin and Asterix. Still I am. Great documentary. Thank you
Every DC comics book writer should watch these documentaries so that they recognised and appreciate the importance of of writing these stories knowing the core and history of these characters.
This was a great and moving documentary on my boyhood heroes. Things have changed, some for the best, others not so much, but it still brought back memories and feelings of those early years of the 1950s thru the 1980s. I still gaze through comics, but not with the fervor I had as a kid.
My old roommate from 20 years ago was the biggest comic collector I ever knew in person. He owned a fortune, each protected in a transparent sleeve, keeping his collection up to date with excel lists, he printed out to label the boxes. Of course, he spent lots of time in the only comic book store we had. I was fascinated, trying to understand more of that passion which he devoted so much time and money. I came to find it reflected so much about our world as we know it, and the world we desire to create, really. I liked Batman more, I am more of the sinister stuff, the Joker is a character that has enormous impact on all sorts of villain characters throughout the movie business as well as the writing business. Hard to find a character is more wag and deep down bad-crazy and sadistic than him. Shakespeare would have loved him, I am sure. This is one of the most essentials chapters of cultural as well as social education, for all those who like to investigate how creativity plays a part in human society.
I think Batman is the superhero standard. A guy driven by a feeling of vengeance. The fact that he has stood the test of time without changing the story much, is a testament of his staying power.

Watching this reminds me of how much I miss the old DC Comics. They used to be a really fun & great company, with things like the 80 page Giant, the 100 page Super Spectacular, the Limited Collectors Edition, etc. The characters used to be fun too, but after Crisis on Infinite Earths is seems to me all of the fun is gone.

Wow... I have to admit, this documentary is what got me into comics. And I've been a fan ever since. I just hope DC and WB can continue with their pioneering creative energy, and remember the core of each character and what they represent. As the movies, comics seems to have forgotten for a while (Some of them). Remember that superhero is a genre to tell great stories. But I believe in DC, in the original vision of WB for movies. I think majority of my favorite movies came out of WB as well. So... Please please please keep the creativity going!!!
such a great recount of modern mythology. So much spotlight on stories and energies and their creators who have one way or the other, influenced all of our lives. an emotional rollercoaster. but oh MAN I wanted to reach in and hug her at about 1:15:00. They both call this American Mythology and couldn't be more right.
I have this documentary in DVD since 2010, it is amazing. So I am glad that finally this material is available for everyone online.
Yes, you did me a solid today WB/DC, thank you very much
Joan Santos Mendoza why do you keep copying comments in replies
My joy from D.C comics just grew 10 times . This is one of the coolest documentaries I’ve ever seen
Would love to see more documentaries like this ,DC for life
Nothing but love for DC. Bats is my favorite character perhaps in all fiction. But Flash, Martian Manhunter, Nightwing, Catwoman, Wonderwoman etc are such a fantastic characters thank you very much for years of work!
Christopher Reeve still the best Superman ever on screen.
Maybe for that era, not now. He didn't have that gritty edge look about him. Cavill has got that rugged look. Superheroes aren't meant to be "pretty boys".
@Isaac Altman In my opinion, yes for this day and age. If someone doesn't agree with those of a different way of thinking, what makes that person crazy?
@Isaac Altman That's just your opinion. I see where Davis is coming from and I agree. What makes Christopher Reeve better than George Reeves, Dean Cain, Brandon Routh, Tom Welling or Kirk Alyn?
@Isaac Altman Then I wish you and your loved ones safety and health throughout the days to come.
Eh, idk
When you can calculate how old a movie/documentary is based on the style of the DC logo lol.
@Jack Fortuna Superheroes are trash now thanks to DC rebirth and Doomsday clock
Metal blood lord 666 723 huh??
Dc Rebirth is amazing and so is doomsday clock
@@i_chosen_one_ips432 DC rebirth and Doomsday clock ruined Watchmen
Once again Bill Finger gets minimized in favor of Bob Kane
Noticed that, too.
Y fue el verdadero creador del universo BATMAN y Gotham
B. Serum yup but this is an old documentary nowadays he’s getting recognized
Last I checked 'Batman & Bill" exposed just that. The title above predates it
@@Slimgosa Batman and bill glad it finally undid a wrong in DC comics history and Bill Finger finally given his credit where it's due
So true and well said.
That what makes both Marvel and DC great in their own way
While it doesn't fit every character, someone once told me that DC heroes are heroes we look up to, while Marvel heroes are heroes we relate to.
This is my life. Rise DC!

@@rudedragens7397 that and he's a HUGE comic book fan??

Pretty sure that is the voice of Green Lantern.
Green lantern you mean
I’m in love with Ryan Reynold’s voice
I watch this every now and again despite knowing it by heart. I could just listen to voices like Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison and Neal Adams talk DC all day.
Wow such a great, informative, and entertaining, documentary. Im a huge fan of Neil Gaimen and love the first two Superman films with Christopher Reeves and I didn't know they had killed him in the comics. That made me cry for real. I inherited my dad's comic book collection that I never read, something like 12 full boxes. I'm going to have to look at them now. Thanks so much for sharing Warner Bros. Entertainment.
Does this mean, DetectiveComics founded the Superhero Genre? Wow so proud to be a DC Fan
The Superhero genre existed long before DC. Notable examples include Spring Heeled Jack, The Shadow and Doc Savage
@@rayblack2004 The first masked crime fighter in comic books was the Clock, whom Centaur Publications introduced in 1936. But it was two young men from Cleveland who created the character who truly launched the superhero genre. DC Comics introduced the first costumedsuperhero, Superman, in Action Comics #1 (June 1938).
Superheroes are detectives so it works either way.
@@Thespeedrap not really
@@kaydee1485 Just Batman the Detective than.
As a neutral fan of both Marvel and Dc
Say what you have to say people dc got the most amazing, badass, finest characters in the history of superheroes and its something that some people won't understand or don't want to understand no no no I REPEAT AGAIN no one can touch dc in the comics and animation cartoon and movies and even dc have movies like The Batman, Christopher Nolan's dark knight trilogy, superman returns, man of steel, batman v Superman, wonder Woman, Shazam, Aquaman, Watchman
And dc Got this amazing future with
Wonder Woman 1984, Zack Snyder's Justice League, The Suicide Squad, The Batman, Black Adam, The Flash, Shazam 2, Aquaman 2.
Man with this slate dc will be on fire in the future. 10s decade marvel rules with amazing movies but mark my words this 20s decade dc rules
Yeah🔥🔥🔥
I hope you will be right! (And I believe the same as you)
If nothing else, I’m glad Warner Bros owns DC for these free TH-cam documentaries available whenever we want! So awesome!
The DC superheroes have backstories that made sense! This is the documentary we didnt know we needed.
Wow, all these made me sub to this channel. The only Studio channel I subbed to.
23:20 “AND GREEN LANTERN “ i see what you did there mr.reynolds
What a wonderful person😄
Wow, it's awesome and inspiring to find out how our unmatched heroes have kept the strength and focus on learning from events alive in their stories. And learn about everyone involved in the history and storytelling of their adventures.
Already own this on DVD. DC made some amazing documentaries. This one , Look up in the Sky (Superman documentary) and Necessary Evil
I love that picture of Moore and Kirby... The forced perspective makes them look like comics' Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins.
I love DC and will continue to LOVE them. These characters inspire and uplift people.
Am a DC fan & this video gives goosebumps Hail DC
This documentary was made in 2011 when DC were celebrating 75 years of existence. It was narrated by Ryan Reynolds to build hype for the release of the Green Lantern movie, which was due in a few months. It was since included in the Batman Beyond series blu-ray as well.
Yup
So? What are you trying to say?
@@akkakkakekkn Giving some background information, thats all.
While in semi-lockdown situation whilst the pandemic is in full force. These sort of documentary stories is essential viewing, if there’s a lot of social restrictions well done Warner Bros. Entertainment
Dc is amazing.

“Doomed Planet, Desperate Scientists, Last Hope, Kindly Couple, SUPERMAN!!!”
This video made every loyal DC fan so happy and proud!
I hope DC can produce some memorable films in the coming years. Really looking forward to Michael Keaton coming back. Awesome documentary; I never knew the background about Superman's creation paralleling immigrants in USA. I will appreciate him a lot more now.
The massive love for DC Comics the heroes born God's, trying to be mortal/ human... seeing the world in the uniquely different way seems more profound story there's always captivated my interest regardless of how old I am become, another 40 plus years from now I will continue my interest in love for these Heroes.
Thank you
Loved it!!! My only quibble is that there was no mention of Jack Kirby's Fourth World...
And not including bill finger for the creation of batman.
@@jishnujayan7324 the did though, they mentioned that Bob took the job and with the help of Bill, submitted batman that Monday morning.
I stop reading comics or graphic novels from time to time but somehow I always go back to it.
Every DC comics book writer should watch these documentaries so that they recognised and appreciate the importance of of writing these stories knowing the core and history of these characters.
I love DC, also I like "adult" story tales of DC-comics. Thannk you for this doc
this reminded me why i fell in love with DC comics
This was a great and moving documentary on my boyhood heroes. Things have changed, some for the best, others not so much, but it still brought back memories and feelings of those early years of the 1950s thru the 1980s. I still gaze through comics, but not with the fervor I had as a kid.
DC Comics is very special for me as a women that loves the men and women who shows our world and Disabilities of how we can show our heroes.
This is one of the most essentials chapters of cultural as well as social education, for all those who like to investigate how creativity plays a part in human society.
i love the FLASH,the Barry Allen one. I also like his original suit,it almost looks like the one from the flash cw series in season 6!
Makes me sad that I never got to meet these people, we are greatly appreciative and thank you for everything.
I think Batman is the superhero standard. A guy driven by a feeling of vengeance. The fact that he has stood the test of time without changing the story much, is a testament of his staying power.
Last year was DC's 85th anniversary.
I was hoping to see something like this.
Really enjoyed it.

BILL FINGER created THE BATMAN , Kane created the name that is it .
Here are a few DC Heroes/ Villains that deserves to have their DCEU standalone or one time films:
10. Deathstroke
9. New Gods
8. Black Canary
7. Teen Titans
6. Green Lantern Corp
5. Black Manta
4. Martian Manhunter
3. Supergirl (with Jimmy Olsen)
2. Static Shock
1. Red Hood and the Outlaws
So my answer is my man DEATHSTROKE aka Slade Wilson . Deathstroke want his own show a solo film dude
All i need is 100s of man of steel sequels
We're already getting one of them. A New Gods movie is in development.
The Spectre????
"i remember being given a box of comics when i was 7..." Neil Gaiman...
As i age i have to wonder, could anything recapture that magic? I mean others parts of life are great, love, kids, adventure..but that special childhood nostalgia is just the best thing ever
I still get emotional each time someone showcases scenes from THE BEST FILM EVER MADE. Christopher Reeve's SUPERMAN is the best thing about my childhood!! PERIOD!!!!!
I'VE SEEN All Of Christopher Reeve'sSuperman!Movies At!Our Local Movie Theater 🎦 🎥 😳 😀 😐 😄!
I hope DC gets to break free and do really innovative and daring things in the live action too, just like in the comics. First step get out of WB.
All WB cares bout is Batman. Since 1989 it’s just been Batman, Batman, Batman, Batman. They’re going to put people off him. Give him a rest for a minute
And now there’s a whole bunch of cretins that infiltrated the industry doing everything they can to destroy it
@@untunedguitar45 You are so correct.
DC Joe Kubert's ...Tarzan (and also Sgt. Rock) circa early 1970's was phenomenal and gritty...first comic I ever bought- ...I've never forgot it..I was 7...
51:13 as an African in Africa, there are times where I wished superheroes were real and would come even the odds for those of us who are oppressed. So this resonates heavily with me.
I used to watch the George Reeves Super as Re-runs in the 1980’s here in the U.K. probably on the BBC along with the Lone Ranger.
I really wanted to scoff at the emotion for a fictional character.......but I had exactly the same emotion back when that issue came out.......and every single time it's discussed since then......and especially feeling it from the POV of someone in the business of storytelling who regularly conjures imagery to elicit an emotional or sensational response! Artists see in 3...maybe 4 dimensions the EVENT they're expressing! She went all the way back to SMALLVILLE 1991 in that moment. I won't even tell you guys how I had to wipe a tear or two.....or 5..at this moment.
A brilliant documentary 👏
I've always been a big fan of both marvel and dc. But dc has always been really special to me. And forever will be

I’ve been reading DC Comics since I was 11. The first ones I read were the New Teen Titans series from the 80s. I was in love. When I was 16 1/2, I picked up Sandman. The audio adaptation came out the day before my 17th birthday. Now, I’m just obsessed with DC.
No one beats Christopher Reeve in superhero cinema as a character.
Definitely agree
51;40 '...and it was right there in that comic book'. A lot of us were right there, Neal. That series that you and Denny , collaborated on, was and still to this day, the turning point for me, and probably so many of us.
