    Valve being very open to hardware modders is just awesome!
    Remember when Sony sued people for creating and selling custom side panels for the PS5? Short after that, Valve released the original CAD models for the outer shell and basically said “do whatever you want”.
    That wasn’t only a great marketing stunt, it also made the Steam Deck somewhat open hardware.

    @brunogamesbr1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +157

    instead of wasting time and resources making a lot of different skins and colors and revisions for the deck, valve just made it easy to the community to do it themselves, sure, they aren't protifing directly over these mods, but not being so limited in options is also appealing and probably helps to sell more decks, now they just need to focus on production otherwise people will only be getting their decks in 2025 lol

      This was the correct approach in my opinion. They seem to be genuinely ok with making many aspects of this system open source and end user modification friendly. This system is probably one of the best advancements in PC gaming we've seen in quite some time. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a more traditional TV console come out for around the same price in a few years once the steam OS gets ironed out.

    • @brunogamesbr1
      @brunogamesbr1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sexytopramen yeah, i feel like what killed the steam machines were both the third-parties handling production and proton not being fully developed at the time, and since both of these are now "fixed", i'd say valve has a really good leverage to push for a "Steam Machine 2.0", actually, with the deck technology i think they are working on a standalone vr headset to compete with the quest, if that's the case then it would be groundbreaking imo, but i hope after the success of the deck that valve takes a break from hardware and focus on fixing some of their games

    VibrantDeck (a display tweaking plugin for the Decky plugin manager) is amazing. Bumping up the saturation on the Deck's screen really does make for a substantial improvement. Don't overdo it. I think the number most recommended was 120 for a subtle pop of the colors. But it does shift the screen closer to the look of an OLED which is amazing.
    Just follow one of the many tutorials, it's well worth it. Decky is awesome and should continue to improve going forward.

    Here's a mod idea if someone wants to make it a reality. Design a replacement back shell that is deeper in the middle, , but returns to the original width around the back buttons for economics. The shell needs to be deep to accommodate a second Deck battery. Make a custom PCB that you connect both batteries to, and then connect the PCB to the battery connector on the mainboard. This PCB will put the batteries in parallel so voltage remains the same, but capacity is doubled. If ergonomics is not affected, you might be able to also have the shell raised around the heatsink area, and design a slightly taller heatsink with a fin array on top, and a coldplate that extends out to the battery IC. Of course, a new metal shroud would need to be made to go over it and pull air from the vents. I believe 10mm of fins on top of the heatsink would make a noticeable difference.

    I really wish the deck had diagonal d-pads like the Xbox controller since diagonal inputs can be wanted in certain scenarios but with the certainty of a d-pad compared to a stick

    It’d be cool if one of the modular attachments was a table mount or clip with bearings to allow the steam deck to spin, so you could makeshift you’re own steering wheel with the gyro.

    I cheaped out on the touchpad skins and bought some automotive vinyls and cut them to size, wasn’t even precise because they are meant for people to tuck them around the corners.
    Amazon has listings for “demo” vinyls that are $3 and enough for front trackpad and back triggers and more. Very happy so far knowing I am not gonna end up with messed up trackpads .
