    I purchased this for my steam deck, and after doing so my games started stuttering, dropping to unplayable frame rates, and then over heating and shutting down. Switch back to thermalpaste and everything works flawlessly.

    So, something I haven't seen mentioned here is: when were those stock readings taken? Valve has made several changes to the fan curves since launch, so are we certain the RPM readings shown are an apples to apples comparison?

    • @GMMReviews
      @GMMReviews ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was just playing a game on my Steam Deck, and the temps were at 79-83c-ish, and my fan rpm at 5000-ish, just like the video. It only ramped up to 6000 occasionally, when pausing weirdly. I wonder how much of a difference the pads really nice make.

    • @MindBlowerWTF

      Look at the power draw and the CPU frequency. Both scenes stress the deck in different way, so even if all the other stuff is the same, that comparision is flawed.

    Hasn't normal thermal paste been shown to be better than these graphene pads?

    • @elsnichkum
      @elsnichkum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Much better is subjective. Just watch Gamer'sNexus or LTT video's on graphite pads. Both go into detail that on lower wattages and for essentially normal use, it performs almost the same. When on higher wattages, the gap of performance widens, but still in ~5 degree difference territory. Don't ever plan on overclocking with it though. Make no mistake, (good) thermal paste will always be better, but by how much will be dependent on the use. Then there's the fact that it doesn't dry out and gives consistent performance for its application. For a one-and-done solution, a $11 name brand graphite pad doesn't seem that bad of an idea. I don't know much about graphene, but it's supposed to be better for conductivity than graphite.

    • @AlphaMachina
      @AlphaMachina 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe one day they'll have these pads at worthwhile efficiencies, but for now, I think compound is better for most applications. I could see this being useful for some things, especially in a situation where you're testing multiple CPU's with a single heatsink, or multiple heatsinks on the same CPU. It would make sense to just use one of these pads. But any kind of permanent application, might as well just stick with thermal paste.

    • @elsnichkum
      @elsnichkum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Stein Mauer My guy. No one is going to argue with you on the price of good paste vs. pads. That's a point where there's no contest. I also said that of course good paste performs better, but by your statement of that it's MUCH better and SAFE, well, that's subjective and in some cases not entirely true.

    • @elsnichkum
      @elsnichkum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don’t know why you’re so brazen about this. Is 3 degrees considered MUCH better? Or 2? 2x conductivity, are you high? A simple bit of research shows the exact opposite of what you just said. Also, not all paste is non conductive. For the love of god, please don’t spread that around to people.

    Fun fact, fan power goes roughly by the cube of the speed. So going from 6000 to 5000 rpm is actually around 40% reduction in power.
    And assuming that noise output power is linear with power (it's not, really, but good enough approximation), that's over 2dB of noise drop from the lowered RPM, which is definitely noticeable!
    Neat little pad. Nice to see graphene entering the consumer space.

      The temperature only has a very small impact on the CPU's lifespan. Since the CPUs never go above 95 degrees Celsius and have protective mechanisms. Whether the CPU runs at 65 or 95 degrees Celsius has only a negligible influence, so it doesn't matter if the CPU runs for 20 years or 19.5 years. The failure rates of CPUs are very low, mostly other small components break before. That's why you can find many used working CPUs even years later, but old motherboards become rare. The failure rate of CPUs corresponds to the bathtub curve, a phenomenon which describes the failure characteristics. But CPUs can wear out and break down over time due to electromigration, so higher voltage does harm. (By CPUs I also mean GPUs and APUs).

    Hi @UFDTech , Could you somehow make a test with the original steam thermal compound to see how the Liquid metal bonding to the cooler has changed the thermals ( if at all ) ? I thought that the bonded LM might have filled out some microscopic gaps ? Great VIDS, Thanks for the Interesting Content.

      This test can't be done. You can't get the OEM valve thermal paste as they don't sell it or the heatsink replacement. You could try and find a similar thermal paste, but it won't be identical.

    I haven't found that LM needs applied over and over. Usually one more application after about six months is sufficient. At least that's been the case over the years with a couple dozen things I've used LM on. Also, I like to use silicone conformal coating around the die to seal in and protect the circuitry. Sweet video though. I love those graphite cooling pads in the right situations. And I can't believe I haven't thought about putting LM on my Steam Deck yet. Guess I have a project for tonight.

    One thing I did to my laptop was to double the heatsink surface area. I did this by getting another heatsink for it (same model) and baking it so that the heat pipes separated from the fin stacks and then glued them together using thermal glue. This dropped my temps by a lot, allowing for boost clocks to stay constant on both cpu and gpu. Due to clearance, the bottom cover sits a bit tight, but it closes. The Steam Deck heatsink looks thin enough that you could try this and not have that much clearance issues. Linus did the whole external heatsink and fan mod, so maybe a simple mod like doubling the heat sink's surface area could help a lot as well.

      I took the idea from this video: th-cam.com/video/WqWXr8HnZT0/w-d-xo.html. Before committing to gluing it, I used tie wraps to hold them together to test it and it worked. Then I removed the solder as much as I could to make it flat and glued them together and got a couple degrees cooler.

    Nobody is realizing that under stress if you keep the fan speed lower, you get air flow where it is needed on other components. The engineers at Valve most likely worked out a balance of fan speed and air flow through the rest of the deck.

    Eh to be honest if you conformal coat around the CPU and don't put too much liquid metal on it's fine, which if it's pooling thats too much, you should apply a thin coat to both surfaces and conformal coat around the die and then a little outside as well just encase a little bit does leak, the longvity thing is real though the liquid metal will get absorbed into the die and copper, nickle plating will slow this down a lot, but yeh, no not inside the steam deck.
    Also nail polish is a decent conformal coating which is easy to obtain from like a corner store.

    I'd use KPX instead since it works great even if there are airgaps in between the heatsink and the silicone die. I've used it onto my GTX1070 of my Sager NP9877-S and haven't replaced it since oct 2020. To clean the liquid metal as well, gotta apply abit of metal polish onto the paper towel for it to absorb most of it out alot easier than using alcohol.
