I Played EVERY Pikmin Game to Prepare for Pikmin 4

- After almost a entire decade since the release of Pikmin 3, the latest entry in the series is finally upon us. I first played the original Pikmin all the way back in 2001 during its release, and I've been a fan of the series ever since. When I first heard that Pikmin 4 was finally unveiled, I decided that I wanted to not only replay each of the following games, but also research the development history in order to understand how we all got here. What I learned was that in spite of numerous circumstances setting the games up for failure, Pikmin has continued to endure for 20 years simply because Nintendo's developers believe in it, and wish for each subsequent entry to be appreciated by more players than the last. In that spirit, I've decided to share just about everything I know and everything I've learned about Pikmin in order to get new players ready to jump into their first Pikmin game, and ultimately, convey the passion of Pikmin

Hey y'all. Hope you guys enjoy this one. When I first began writing it, I had my Star Fox video in mind and thought... hey I can probably make a one hour video out of Pikmin! Oh how wrong I was. I love Pikmin so much that I actually had to restrain myself from finding more things to talk about... like how levels repopulate with enemies after a certain amount of days, or the mysteries of Louie's character, or the secret data files in Pikmin 3! And those are just off the top of my head... so if there's anything I missed, let's talk about it :D. I can't believe Pikmin 4 is finally here and my plan is to play through it at my own pace and make a follow up video when I'm ready. Hope to be back again sooner than later!
I've just started Pikmin 1 first time blind never touched Pikmin heard of it looked weird didn't get it, watched Arlo's stuff and heard him constantly praising Pikmin, still wasn't interested as only Pikmin 3 was on switch and i like to start from the beginning, but now with all Pikmin games on switch i finally started this series 22 years late but my goodness I have enjoyed Pikmin 1 alot more then i had thought
Have you seen the newest ask the developers interview. It goes really in detail about the origin of pikmin. We even got some early art.
@@spyrojoe4721 That's awesome! I'm so glad they decided to port the originals to Switch. It's going to help the series so much!
@@logansmith2703 Yes I have! Unfortunately the script for this video was finalized about a month ago, otherwise I would have loved to talk about the new interviews. Maybe in a follow up video I could talk about them. LOVE the first Pikmin designs, they remind of the Punies from Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door
@@logansmith2703where can I watch that?
I thought this would just be a lets play of pikmin games, i did not expect the entire backstory and creation of pikmin
I like Pikmin a lot what can I say
@@wizawhat who doesn't?
video title is pretty misleading ngl
Depends. Lots of retrospectives or critiques have titles exactly like this. This is exactly what I expected when I started watching this
Now THIS is what we call true Dandori. Mr. Dan Dandori himself would be proud...
Mr. Dan Dori would give a standing ovation
Long videos are...good Dandori
Daondori online
Dandori in the switch
Dandori on the gamecube. Dandori, dandori, dandori....
the sage leafling would be proud
@@SamookelyYeah, that's Dan. Lol
Someone tag Mr. Dori he needs to see this comment
This is so much better than 99% of 2 hour long gaming video essays
Glad I'm doing something right haha
No it isn't, it's about the same. The cadence and tone of his voice and overly emotional views are annoying. This is why adults back in the early 2000 blamed video games for violence. And the more I listen to videos like this the more I believe them. Even when I was a kid I was able to tell the difference between video games snd real life
Also, just because what I said sounds harsh doesn't mean I think this video is bad. I actually think it's good
Recent developer interviews have shed even more light on the development, including that the game originally began development on N64.
Yeah I really wish I could have included that info but the script was finalized over a month ago. I'm so happy they're sharing more info with the launch of the new game! Those early Pikmin designs look so cute
I genuinely think Shigeru's favourite series is Pikmin. Just the way he talks about it shows how much he loves the series, and despite it lagging behind the other nintendo titans, a pikmin game always seems to make its way into whatever new console Nintendo releases.
He very clearly loves it. Visiting nintendo world at universal, there’s Pikmin carrying a mario coin. I’m sure there’s other nintendo references among there, but I thought it was so sweet that a semi niche game would be represented here.
This was the perfect thing to watch during this unbearable last day of waiting for pikmin 4. I love this series so much and you touched on basically every reason why.
That's awesome, thank you so much for watching and I'm glad to be of service :D
The "and you" at the end of the credits of Pikmin 4 really made me misty-eyed. These games really mean so much and in a way other games just can't.
I needed a video like this during the final hours of waiting for pikmin 4 to come out
I love to hear that, hope this video helps!
IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOOOOOOOOOWN! *DUH NUNUUUN. DUHNANUN NAH NUUUUM*
Olimar was a huge influence in forming my love and respect for the natural world.
And Louie in my adventurous palette.
It is clear to me that this video came just as much from the heart as the games you're talking about did. I hope dearly that you enjoyed and are continuing to enjoy Pikmin 4.
Already completed 4 100% and I loved it every step of the way. My concluding thoughts are a little different. I'm still working through them, but I'm looking forward to talking about it in great detail on the channel soon. TLDR I think Pikmin 4 has a few problems but I still absolutely LOVE it
"We made it because we wanted to." Now I'm blown away, only Nintendo would do such a thing kudos to them for such an amazing franchise. 😌
I really really love when Nintendo's developers are allowed to speak directly with fans for reasons such as this quote
I played pikmin 1 and 2 when i was prob 10 and just didnt have the brains for it at the time. Decided to give them another shot two weeks ago. Ive since completed pikmin 1 3 times, pikmin 2 once, currently playing pikmin 3 with my GF and playing pikmin 4 now. What a stellar franchise!!!!
I played when i was like 6 and i would start crying if too many pikmin died💀 my parents were serious pikmin fans (and my brother also played) After watching my brother getting horrifyingly crushed by the water wraith i literally never even dared to enter the submerged castle
I’m a new pikmin Stan, started playing the series as a whole when they released 1+2 and wow. It’s such an underrated classic and I’m genuinely enthralled in it. Great retrospective man. ❤️
Glad to have you aboard!
A lot of the things you've said about Pikmin 2 have been things I have been wracking my brain trying to find words for almost all of my life, and yet so much of your dialogue contributes even more as to why it's my favorite game ever. It's so amazing that there could be such a strong difference between the two games, and I really feel like there is a Pikmin experience out there for everyone. All three mainline games are 10 out of 10's in my eyes though so for some people, EVERY game is for everyone lol.
Yeah, while its not my favorite, I can absolutely see why Pikmin 2 is a lot of people's favorite. What a special game in such a weird way... I agree though, they're all close to 10/10 for me!
Very good video! Pikmin is my absolute favourite series from Nintendo, even as a kid it always felt different than Nintendos other outings. More somber and real than it’s contemporaries. Even today I don’t find many games that strike the same melancholic tone as Pikmin 1, and I’m glad you picked up on these themes as well.
I played all Pikmin Games. It always was one of ma fav franchises. Never got, why others did not get into it. This is nature itself. Eating or being eaten, exploring, surviving, finding stuff, doing multitasking, always trying to save your squad, every Pikmin is important,... always loved it and Olimar in Smash is 1 of my top 5 used, cuz noone else plays as him it always seems 😂
The time crunch turned me off initially. Considering giving it another shot. I like to take my time, and not be rushed
The point being is that they don't make new IPs for the sake of making them. They build games around the act of simply asking very basic game design questions and following a train of logic in the direction of a general end goal. They still treat the craft as a craft and not a means to an end for business.
Still, even they miss sometimes. ARMS didn't land as hard as Splatoon did before it. Pikmin didn't end up the killer app of the GameCube, Melee and Metroid Prime did. We suffer these occasional misfires because we know they absolutely hear feedback and take it seriously in making the next entry. It's how we got BotW, it's why Pikmin managed to get 4 genuinely different and valid games that stand up well individually to this day. I respect it.
You've perfectly captured the wonder and feelings that Pikmin has evoked in me since my first time playing it on the gamecube, down to even the discovery of it through Luigi's Mansion. I am so thankful this series has persevered and seems to be gaining steam on the Switch. This series has planted it's hooks so deep into me, and I truly hope it attracts newcomers to experience the same jubilance, terror, joy, regret, grief, and love that this series has given me. Thank you for this deep dive, and I hope Pikmin 4 is everything we both want it to be :)
I did this too. I'm about halfway done with a 100% run of 4. They didn't add all that much to change it. Rather, they combined the best aspects of the 3 precious games. The vast open worlds of 1, the dungeons and unlimited days of 2, with the modern controls and QOL improvements of 3. It's probably the most difficult pikmin game, though i have yet to finish it
I actually think its one of the easiest Pikmin games, but it's difficult to truly evaluate the difficulty from my perspective because I've played Pikmin all my life!
@@wizawhat I said that because I didn't know the rewind feature was immediately available. I cannot read
The dungeons are nothing like Pikmin 2. At all. That's what makes them good. Also, the Dandori Challenges are basically Mission Mode from 3.
Wow, I never heard someone so positive about Hey! Pikmin. I actually liked the game a bit at launch and put it down after the Switch announcement and my obsession with Paper Mario Color Splash. You made me want to replay it just to see my own thoughts and share that knowledge with others.
It's definitely not mind blowing but I had a lot of fun with it, even after binging through it in a weekend. For someone who just wants something lowkey to pick up and play for an hour or two every once in awhile I think its a great substitute while waiting for the next mainline game.
Hey pikmin is for sure an adorable game.
pikmin has been my favorite game series since i was a kid and now theres a finally a new game and it is SOOOO GOOD
You’re so good at this. You speak with so much clarity and succinctness but you have so much to say. The ending of your video made me cry, and I want you to know that.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that 🥺
Amazing work as always. This was an absolute love letter to an incredible franchise that just continues marching on just like Pikmin do. Both informative and heartfelt, you did a wonderful job at highlighting what makes this series so special. And thanks so much for having me be a small part of this as well!
Thank you, and thank you again for joining me 😄😄
pikmin is probably the first direct cause for my love of roguelikes. the stress of such a tight timeline and the necessity of full resets is so fun to me.
uhhh... dude youre passion alone for this game makes me so happy. i got into pikmin during covid.... and obviously i've been loving p4. hope youre enjoying it. thanks for the great watch. big time subbed.
I am really enjoying it and can't wait to talk about it in my follow up video 😄
Bro I've been a massive Pikmin fan since I was 10 back in 2012. My family was always a SEGA/Xbox fam so I didn't get to play Pikmin till I got my own switch in 2021 after I moved out. I did watch nearly every Pikmin lets play though as a child. I'm so glad they ported Pikmin 1 & 2 to the Switch. I'm so syked for tomorrow!
I'm delighted to see such a strongly put-together retrospective about this delightful series. Excellent, excellent work
Thank you, your videos and dedication to Pikmin is awesome, the Pikmin Unearthed video in particular is incredible!
Pikmin is my favorite game franchise and I'm happy it's finally getting noticed
kinda criminal that u put so much research and effort to this video and(when writing this comment) you only have 7.6k views u deserve so much more and you have my respect for this amazing retrospect of pikmin
I was that friend that wanted to stay downstairs and play Pikmin while everyone else went upstairs to play smash bros.I mean I loved me some good smash sessions but man Pikmin just captivated me in such a special way man.
This video is SOO amazing and crafted with so much love and care for the series' history!! I'm just getting into the Pikmin series through Pikmin 4 and the lore about the development and changes with each installment are so fascinating :-) Now I really wanna play the rest of the games!
They're definitely worth checking out after 4! 4 is really a fantastic entry point. You'll notice things in the previous games that really haven't aged as well but you'll also see where a lot of the inspiration and iteration for 4 came from!
I'm always looking for long in-depth retrospectives to listen to at work and this one provided! Thanks for the great video!
Pikmin is about to write history. I'm afraid that for starfox which you mention in the opening though, zero wrote it's legacy
"Unsung"
If I learned anything the Pikmin fandom is basically the Band Geeks showing up at the Super Bowl. Oh boy they can sing
this was a masterpiece of a video, amazing storytelling and informative nature man, keep it up
love love love you for putting it into words. the relationship with the pikmin, how it’s disturbing but loving but mournful, you got it. you got it down exactly.
Dude you just earned a sub this is probably the best take for pikmin 2 I've seen
Happy to know I've made the Pikmin 2 fans proud!
My copy of Pikmin 4 was delayed until Monday but this video kept me good company and made the wait more bearable, thank you for another wizawhat banger
This video is well written and full of passion. Thank you so much for putting that so much effort in it, this franchise deserves it!!
Pikmin 2 will always be my favorite BECAUSE of its flaws. I like how powerful purples make me feel. I like how the whole game isn't held by the constant tension in the first game. I like how it has sudden spikes of terror and difficulty that feels unfair. The things that are frustrating in this game only add to it for me.
Genuinely one of my favorite video essays I've ever watched. I love learning the history of all of the games like this, and it's easy to tell these games hold a very special place in your heart. It's so lovely when videos like this are made with so much care and dedication in every frame. I saw Hey Pikmin when it came out and I sorely misjudged it like everyone else. After watching the video, I want to go out and see if I can find a copy to try it out. I've put this video on a minimum of 5 times while I work and it's just 2.5 hours of sheer delight every time. Not even mentioning how well it's put together. Thank you for the hard work and love that you put into this video.
Thank you so much! It's really tough putting videos like these together, so it means a lot to me to hear that from you.
this video is my first exposure to the Pikmin series, like, ever. despite being a Nintendo fan all my life!
you are very good at making these videos, i found a lot of what you had to say about the series very easy to follow and quite interesting, and i can definitely see myself giving the series a try at some point. thanks for blessing us with your wonderfully crafted videos and discussions!
Thank you so much! 🥺 If I've gotten anyone a little more interested in Pikmin I consider this video a success 🙏
Definitely peaked my interest in Hey Pikmin, since Federation Force is another one of those games, and having played it, I can tell you it's a pretty solid co-op shooter (it really did just suffer from very, very poor timing). I do also love me a good puzzle platformer.
Also some great insight into the series as a whole, making me realize just why 2 is my favorite, while also making me appreciate the other entries more.
Yeah I am definitely more interested in Federation Force after playing Hey Pikmin
As a diehard Metroid fan I'malso interested in Federation Force as it's the only game I never played (that and Pinball). But the thing is, it really, REALLY looks like you need other live people in co-op to actually get the intended experience. If I play it solo, I'm 99% certain I'll be underwhelmed. I think that was the second death knell no one talks about
@@RyouShi98 Oh definitely. I say it's a solid co-op shooter, with an emphasis on the co-op part. I played through it with my nephew. There is a piece of equipment to help out people playing solo, but, yeah, solo's probably not a worthwhile experience unless you're really, REALLY curious.
Also, Pinball's also pretty dope. Like, it is just pinball, but it's a pretty rad pinball game.
One thing certainly seems true, Mario may be Miamoto’s baby but Pikmin is the favorite child
By far the best Pikmin retrospective on TH-cam. Thank you.
Thank you!!
As a Pikmin fan since the Pikmin 1 days, its always great to see and hear what people think about the games! Imma definitly enjoy this video!
Thank you for the perspective you brought to the series
Great fucking video Mr. Wizawhat. Been excited for Pikmin 4 and have been on a Pikmin-bender lately. Always glad to hear some love for this niche series!
A perfect way to send us off to a new pikmin horizon. Love to see it
i've watched a couple of your videos by now. i adore the passion in your voice - i've never played a pikmin game before, but its so easy to feel invested in this with your delivery. :)
Thank you so much that means a lot 🙏
Very interesting. I like your focus on specifics, anecdotes, and history with the game.
Excellent work, hope this blows up

I love Pikmin, and this video got me super excited for Pikmin 4, which I've nearly completed now. Thanks for the wonderful story, subscribed!
great video! really hope pikmin 4 sells well and that more people fall in love with its charm and dandori
Pikmin 2 and Majora's mask have a lot in common, both happen to be sequels using existing assets with very different tone and gameplay progression than the originals and I love them both
The creativity that is born from limitations in sequels such as these is really impressive
It's amazing to me how deep Pikmin 1 in particular (but as a series too) is, narratively and gameplay-wise, and yet so many Nintendo fans still haven't tried it
This was awesome video to watch before i played pikmin 4. Really nice job
Fantastic video, as always! Love the attention to detail and heart poured into this video!
Thank you so much!
the breakdown of the magic of the first gate in forest of hope is so real. i can picture, clearer than most memories, my first time playing the game and interacting with that gate. all the emotions you expressed about the atmosphere of the first game resonated with me a lot. even when i was a kid, that game evoked such an addictive melancholy that few other games have in store. great video :)

The intro reminds me of what makes nintendo so great. Unlike so many other game companies that chase after trends Nintendo just focuses on doing its own thing. That made themnstand out more than any one else out there.
Very good analysis of pikmin hope this gets more views!
Plot twist, Pikmin ended up being several times more scary than Luigi's Mansion.

I'm calling the Pikmin Police :(
My dad and I have always loved the Pikmin series since 1. I begged him to pick it up for GameCube for me back in the day from Gamestop, a used copy. Now the man's more into the series than I am. He's probably got 1k+ hours in Pikmin 1 and 2 over the years, separately, definitely over 500 in 3. I just kinda beat the games, experience the story, and put them down. I never see him outwardly more happy than when there's a new Pikmin game, and it makes me happy that he enjoys something in this life. He doesn't enjoy a lot anymore.
Either way, we both very much enjoy Pikmin and I'm so glad Miyamoto has continued to create Pikmin games. Nintendo deserves a lot more marketing for this game.
Your dad sounds awesome, and I wanna know how fast he can complete Pikmin 1
@@wizawhat Lmao, he definitely takes his time since his reflexes aren't what they used to be. Honestly he's beaten the game enough times normally that he just has fun with 1 and 2 using an Action Replay on GameCube now, making huge Pikmin armies and stuff looool
Wow, this was very well made
man this video deserves more views! i thought itd be weird dudebro clickbait but its so passionate and well-researched.... one of my favorite pikmin vids right off the bat :^)
This has been an amazing review and analysis thank you.
I will be approaching the mysterious planet again, im sure i wont crash this time...🎉
My god, well gonna enjoy watching this
This was really worth watching before finally getting to start playing pikmin 4
This video had me grinning ear to ear. You couldn't have been more right about the franchise.
A lovely listen while working and my highest thanks for such a well made documentation and fascination of the franchise which I always found myself alone in adoring when growing up as also a child playing the first game, all the way up to an adult now - still loving this niche gem of a game while I laugh at my pitiful (now distant) friends chasing pink shoes in Fortnite. Hah!
Subbed immediately, and you've swayed me to complete my Pikmin collection on the switch. (Just bought 1 for the full set, seeing as I swayed more with 2's cruelty over 1's beautify sorrowful journey.
Hope to hear more videos like this in your future uploads. :)
Ive always wanted to get into this series and Im glad that theres ways for me to be able to do just that! The world, characters, stories and lore all seem sooo charming and I cant wait to experience all of these games. This is a great video so far and Ill make sure to finish watching after I play them

Ever since pikmin got a switch port, I have seen pikmin get it's due praise that it should have been getting for years
this felt like a documentary. I appreciate your passion. I love Pikmin but I feel like not enough people around enjoy it like I do. this was very well done.
wow this is such an amazing video, makes me appreciate how the pikmin series persevered against unfortune circumstances and how hard they work to make this franchise and the passion that goes into each installment.
I personally love how they are willing to experiment with all the pikmin games it gives each installment a unique feel to it.
Also makes me happy to see pikmin 4 being the best selling pikmin game with over 3 million sold like metroid dread.
I watched this video in the background while I was cooking and after you finished Pikmin 1 I was like, "wow, that was a great video!" And finally looked at the title and runtime 😅
Thank you for putting into words why Pikmin 2 is my favourite Nintendo game of all time, if not my favourite game period.
That sense of something beyond nature looming just beneath the surface is an emotion that a lot of media tries to capture, but I've never seen such a success as Pikmin 2.
woah 2 hours!?
IM WATCHING IT ALL!!!
The Wii U was the best console, and it was what introduced me to Pikmin. My sister and I got obsessed with Pikmin 3 and still play it till this day.
I remember as a kid, being absolutely terrified of the Mamuta in Pikmin 1, and I have still yet to beat the game.
This video is so good and wholesome I’m gonna cry
I'm going to watch all of this!
This was fantastic to listen to at work! Really brightened my day :) Personally, I don't enjoy the Pikmin series because they stress me out too bad between the time limit and the Pikmin dying, but I wish I did because their atmosphere is incredible. (And sadly Pikmin Bloom doesn't work on my phone rip) I loved hearing how someone who does enjoy the gameplay tell me what they see in it, that was so cool, like someone picking out all the best bits for me ^^
Also I think maybe I should give Hey Pikmin a go, a puzzle platformer sounds a lot more my speed! Thank you so much for all of your efforts, you made my day and got me to appreciate a series in a new light :)
Ayyyy, same here bro. Happy Pikmin 4 Eve! 😊
Pikmin is one of my favorite game series ever. I love the gameplay and the feeling of the world you’re in running around in it feels cozy but mysterious and the music is great also. Good memories playing pikmin 2 on my GameCube when I was younger even though I kind of sucked at it back then and didn’t get it like I do now but I’ve just appreciated it more over the years
It was so good it genuinely brought me to tears
Manor Update: The Japanese physical release of Pikmin 4 has officially outsold Final Fantasy 16's Japanese physical release.
The first time i played something related to pikmin was nintendo land and super smash bros on "Wii U" but recently I am now playing the mainline pikmin games and i couldnt be happier
That Nintendo Land version is a great introduction to the series!
@wizawhat yeah but I knew nothing about it like the nectar and the bombs but now I know
This was such a well made video
