Man, this honestly takes mental fortitude. At least for me and my ilk, and I'm sure it affects most people to some degree. Especially stuff with sentimental value. I've gone through purges of my collections a few times and it's like pulling teeth, and more than half the time I end up backing out and changing my mind. The closest I've done to this type of purge was with my movie collection, and all I did there was get rid of the cases and put the discs into a couple of disc books in order to have them take up less space (keeping my favorite movies' cases and keeping them on the shelf). Even just throwing out those cases hurt. I salute your practicality and guts, John. It's no mean feat to do something like this.
Fuck, I know I'm a fan of yours when we have completely different taste in music but still listenin' to you talk about what you grew up with and what inspired you is such a fun journey. I'm 10 hours in, thanks for this John.
I've been chipping away at this video when doing stuff the last week and its honestly been such good company to have. Loving these new formats of content, thanks John for making a stressful life a little less stressful ❤
Seeing you review The Birthday Massacre was something that I never thought I'd get to see. So happy to see you love their songs, they're my favorite band~ ☺💛
EDIT: just realised you're talking about the Birthday Massacre, not the Birthday Party, doh. Love the Birthday Party, and most of Nick Cave's stuff. I finally saw him with the Bad Seeds in 2017 at Manchester Arena, a few months after the terrorist attack there - he dedicated Into My Arms to the victims, the atmosphere was incredible.
Over 11 hours? You really put so much work in everything you do John. I'm only half an hour in but this will be my awesome background entertainment for the awful tasks I have ahead of me today. Thanks so much!! ❤

What a great video! Our musical tastes don’t really align, but I’m 3hrs in and loving it. Your knowledge of the bands and albums is so impressive and you sound so passionate throughout. Definitely noting down some albums to check out. As a person who leans towards hoarding, I am so nervous about you getting rid of your CDs and then the artists pulling their albums from streaming and then you can never hear them again.
I know it hurts to get rid of a collection, but I love that you documented all of your CDs as a video so that you can never forget what you owned! Love your videos John and appreciate the long video!
My sister and I went through our dads albums a month or two ago. He had a ton of music (over 800 albums) and it was bitter sweet. This was a neat idea, thanks for sharing.

i am only 40 minutes in but when you pulled out your the birthday massacre collection, i literally gasped out loud. i haven't been able to buy music in awhile but they're one of my favourite bands of all time. seeing that collection was legitimately exciting for me haha. a guy in my theatre class in college got me into them (i think he heard them off myspace too) and i've been obsessed for over a decade now. i used to listen to them at work, too. also re: between the buried and me. yeah i feel the same. i want to like them more than i do. they're great but i can't get as into them as i wish i could. that said their instrumentals really are just incredible. i'm really enjoying this so far!!! really nice to have on and surprisingly more engaging than i would have expected.
It only took 4 months, but I finally finished watching through the whole vid! This was fun, so wanted to be sure I caught it all! Thanks for sharing and encouraging folks to branch out of their comfort zones.
Huge Alter Bridge fan here. You will be shocked to hear that they are very much still alive and well. Their overall sound has changed a bit over the years, but they have actually released SEVEN studio albums and are still going strong. They release a new album every 3 or so years, and their last one was in 2022 (Pawns & Kings). If the name Myles Kennedy rings a bell with anyone, that's because he was the lead singer on the Slash albums Apocalyptic Love and World on Fire in 2012 and 2014. Highly recommend those albums as well as Alter Bridge as a whole.
Alter Bridge is my favorite band of all time, just saw them live in February. Gonna have to side with you on this, huge fan of the most recent album, Pawns and Kings. My top 2 songs are Blackbird and Fable of the Silent Son
im currently sick with the flu and have been intermittently catching minutes of sleep here and there and this video is keeping me same right now.... plus I'm learning a lot about metal albums! thanks john 🙏
So excited for this long video, it's so interesting to listen to someone talk about their personal items because there are always great stories and memories behind them so I'm glad you decided to share this with us even though it could of been just a personal dump and declutter.
Doubtful. Those albums are the most mainstream poser 'metal' and pop shit that nobody wants and the releases aren't even any limited/special editions. Albums that are worth something are non-mainstream albums (like a ton of black metal albums, when i look that my release of Storm of the Light's Bane from Dissection is worth close to 100€ nowadays) , albums that are long out of print and special releases and of course great pressings, like most original japan pressings or original west german productions, since they always had the best quality and the best cd mastering
John first of all you look so beautiful with that hair!! And loving this video so far and loving the fact that you're just doing whatever you're vibing
Admittedly jumping around the video, but I'm loving all the DFW representation between Element Eighty and Toadies! I went to high school in Keller and remember riding around with a buddy of mine blasting their CD when it was new. My wife and I actually saw Toadies live in Dallas several years ago, too. :)
I can’t even fathom how long this took - from alphabetising them, to recording, then editing & uploading etc 🤯 it’ll take me a few days to watch this probably but I’m looking forward to it 😊
This was such a relaxing video to listen to/watch while working today, and it also made me want to go through my old CD collection! Thanks for the cozy content John!
Dude, this is awesome! I absolutely love my CD collection, I am very proud of it! Going to our local music shop is still something I do often, nothing beats a new CD or LP. Through the years I've parted with the CDs that aren't critical to keeping, so the worthy remainders are elite and truly my lifelong favorites. I can't see myself ever not listening to them! The collection grows throughout the years as more and more solid albums are released and become important to me, it's so interesting to see it expand over time. Anyway, love seeing this long music and album video, glad you're keeping your favorites, and keep physical media alive and support your local record shop! 💛💽
I was excited to see the Nightwish CDs! Imaginaerum and Century Child are my favorite two. My dad was also a big CD collector and I still have his collection stored away.
I've been having this on in short-ish bursts as background noise over the past week and it's been really enjoyable - I love hearing people talk about stuff they're passionate about, especially music, so this is a very comfy long watch. plus there's the added bonus of sometimes being able to note down a band I haven't heard of before but is right up my alley genre wise so thanks for that!
I still collect CD's actually, and though I'm only going for Deathmetal/Deathcore, I did a few months back pickup everything by Senses Fail since they're my favorite pop-punk band. There's something about physical media that makes me happy. EDIT: Also to tack on, since I saw you have most of TBDM's albums, Rest in peace Trevor, such an amazing vocalist gone too soon.
@@anywhere_but_here you are absolutely right about their firsts two albums, everything else after ranges from 7/10-8-10. Also i think ill go check out save the day now, ill take your word for it, considering you have good taste with senses fail

John, this was truly, truly, truly some of the most enjoyable content you've created. Don't get me wrong; your other gameplay videos are fun and gleeful in a more,, exciting way!! and you're always in my rotation for the horror game content but the coziness of just hearing you gush and talk about this huge passion of yours (and getting to know more about your formative music experiences) put a smile on my face!
This video will take me many days to get through fully, but I love this. I'm a massive metal fan and hearing John talk about some of these bands is awesome. Also, still happy to see John doing other kinds of videos. Keep it up!
Man, I gotta say, what an insane collection this is.. loved seeing a lot of great metal and rock acts in there. The Black Dahlia Murder, In Flames, Metallica, Katatonia, Agalloch, Children of Bodom, 10 Years, Tool, etc. I’m 19 years old and I’m currently collecting a whole load of cds as well as vinyl records (and even some cassettes), got probably 300+ albums in my collection at the moment, I’m not entirely sure, I lost complete track of it lol. But anyways, hope the best comes out of selling these for ya man, loving the content as always. 🤘🔥
Devin Townsend is such a diverse musician. If you do want to try again i would recommend Deconstruction, Z2, Accelerated Evolution amongst others. He can span across all genres although i love his heavy stuff more. Absolute powerhouse live. So cool to see your diverse range of tastes. Some solid decisions in your collection ❤
This video is incredible, now I have the urge to dig out my old portable CD player & cycle through my old collection & my parents collection! I’ve only got about 10 or 15 in my collection since iPods became all the rage when I was about 9, but my parents have got a cool 150-200 CDs of all the music they played in my childhood to borrow. Thank you for the great video John!
My dad and I always bonded over music and the way you talk about your albums and your knowledge about them reminds me of him and the random info he's imparted to me. This video was awesome.
I'm convinced John's goal is to see how long he can make his videos and still get people to watch. We've gone from 4 hour vids, to 6 hours, and now 11 hours. Well challenge accepted, I'll watch any video from you no matter the length! Looking forward to your future 24 hour upload! 😎
Commenting before you get into it, but I went through the same process of donating my album collection recently. Its tough but feels good to get rid of the boxes collecting dust. I'm excited to hear about your collection!
Thank you so much, John! I really love all of your different content. It's relaxing and seems almost therapeutic for you too! I appreciate your dedication to everything
I did not go into this video thinking I would love it as much as I do. But this is somehow one of your most relatable videos. Thank you for sharing something so vulnerable with us!
Ah man, just saw Fair to Midland on the spreadsheet! They're an overlooked band, wish they'd been bigger. For context, I'm from England and they were supporting Dir en Grey on their first ever UK tour in...2007 I think? Crazy way to discover them.
When I first found you, I loved how much horror content you had and continued to put out, from great series to bad indie games. But the more I've watched you over the years, the more I've realised that I watch your content for you, your quips, your brilliant commentary, your insight, your stories, and I have loved seeing you branch out more as a content creator and an influencer, you're admirable, clever, and incredibly entertaining, and just an overall great person to watch and support. This is gonna be fun, thanks for doing you John. 👍
I had a 1500+ CD collection, got my first 5 (Rush 's Fly By Night & Caress of Steel, Pink Floyd's A Collection of Great Dance Songs and the 2 CD set of the Fantasia Soundtrack. Yes, I'm eclectic) along with a Sony Walkman CD player in 1989. About 8 years ago I decided to pare most of it down to the essentials. Now I have about 300 and have just started sorting even more out. I went from a whole WALL of CDs to part of a bookcase. It's sad but cathartic.
Woa, just got this notification and then saw the video length. I also still have a lot of cds from my childhood, despite my current car not having a player 🙃
This video is so cool! I don't think I would've ever thought I'd actively want to watch an 11 hour video, and yet here I am. It's incredibly interesting to hear your thoughts on all of this music.
Hey John, just because you mentioned Alter Bridge... they dropped a whole lot more albums, consistently every three years, latest one was released last year. They have some really good songs. Also Mark Tremonti got his solo project, can't recommend to listen to the stuff this guy is doing enough!
So happy to see Gojira in there ! Saw them twice, the fucking best ! We're so blessed to have such a long video from you. Love the energy you've been flowing with lately. 🤘
Thank you for The Birthday Massacre and The Browning! I fell in love with them on the first seconds of listening. I hope I'll finish watching this video someday... So many new names!
Your nightwish takes brought me back to being 14 fr. I was OBSESSED. Was talking recently about how im convinced the public perception to the nightwish drama would be like,, a complete 180 from what i remember at the time if it were today. I remember me and my little goth friends on tumblr thinking his weird tarja angst songs were so ~ haunting and emotional ~ and the fact he didnt let it go was ~tragically beautiful~ (wtf were we ok😭) now its just,, yeah 'cringe and weird' is the perfect description, actually insane 😭😭😭 Honestly always really liked Floor. Swear she collabed with like everyone on symphonic metal and had bands of her own and i always enjoyed her work. Honestly just think she came in after all the good albums had already been written. Love hearing her live recordings of older nightwish songs to this day but the new stuff aint doing it for me. Idk not big on the newer writing. Once best album ngl x
4:08:28 of course you’re insightful, entertaining, and fun, John! I admit I skipped here from the description; “existential crisis” always piques my curiosity. It’s relatable. 😂 However, much as I love your presentation and such, I don’t have… {looks at total time} WOAH. Um. THAT many hours to watch. So, respectfully, I’ll refer to the Google sheet for the condensed version, but thank you for taking the time to present all these!!
I have no use for my physical music media anymore. Haven't had a disc drive in my computer in a couple years and haven't had space to set up the turntable and hifi system but ever since I got rid of my DVD collection a few years back and streaming decided to decentralize I'm so reluctant. Wish I ripped them all onto an HDD like I'm gonna do with my music collection before the day innevitably comes. Got 400+ CDs and 200+ LPs. Totally want to hold onto them just incase my daughter is a nostalgic weirdo like her dad. I was always so glad I grew up in a house with a giant CD collection and want to pass that gift on.
I appreciate you powering through an 11 hour video. Cause it got me through my 8 hour shift today. Made the day a lot better. I also collect CD's and have a lot of the same ones you do. Cool to see. Good to hear another fan of Sybreed exists. Was just thinking to myself that you would probably like the band and got pleasantly surprised. The vocalist has fairly recently started his own project called Lucifer Ascending but it's more akin to death metal if you're looking for new stuff with his voice. Pretty sure the other guys are doing something as well but I can't remember.

💯💯 I feel that
Honestly, letting go of cool ass CDs is hard but its helpful. Proud of you! ‼️
Will return to watch the video when I go to sleep ‼️
@@klourdes6068did you finish it
Fuck, I know I'm a fan of yours when we have completely different taste in music but still listenin' to you talk about what you grew up with and what inspired you is such a fun journey. I'm 10 hours in, thanks for this John.
I've been chipping away at this video when doing stuff the last week and its honestly been such good company to have. Loving these new formats of content, thanks John for making a stressful life a little less stressful ❤
This is gonna be an awesome nostalgia trip to the days of my CD flip book 😂
Seeing you review The Birthday Massacre was something that I never thought I'd get to see. So happy to see you love their songs, they're my favorite band~ ☺💛
EDIT: just realised you're talking about the Birthday Massacre, not the Birthday Party, doh.
Love the Birthday Party, and most of Nick Cave's stuff. I finally saw him with the Bad Seeds in 2017 at Manchester Arena, a few months after the terrorist attack there - he dedicated Into My Arms to the victims, the atmosphere was incredible.
Same! I was excited to see them getting some love, such a great band.
Holy fuck 11 hours. That’s insane. Thank you John!
Over 11 hours? You really put so much work in everything you do John. I'm only half an hour in but this will be my awesome background entertainment for the awful tasks I have ahead of me today. Thanks so much!! ❤
He does put a lot of care into his videos. I'm pretty sure he's one of those TH-camrs who's talked about not uploading certain videos they were gonna upload because it wasn't up to their standards. And they might not think it, but we notice and appreciate that.
i used to do a little game when going to thrift stores, which was picking up a new cd by a band ive never heard of that had cool album art and listening to it on the way home. i kept picking up country albums so that game ended pretty fast lmfao but damn i do love cds and your collection is very impressive! im gonna use this vid as inspiration to downsize some of my own collections of stuff because i really have too much collecting dust that someone else will enjoy more than i am!
Here are my favorites from your list:
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain (The Mantle is in my top 5 favorite albums of all time)
All That Remains - The Fall of Ideals
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Between the Buried and Me - The Parallax II (Colors is in my top 10)
Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (in my top 5)
Opeth - Watershed (Blackwater Park is in my top 5)
Periphery - Periphery II
Soilwork - The Living Infinite
Trivium - The Crusade (Shogun is in my top 5)
Wintersun - Time I
RIP Alexi, man thanks for the walk down memory lane.. remembering highschool and listening to Children of Bodom.
11 hours plus of CDs and music chat?! That's going in the watch list for later!!!
I'm loving all the different types of videos lately :)
My sister and I went through our dads albums a month or two ago. He had a ton of music (over 800 albums) and it was bitter sweet. This was a neat idea, thanks for sharing.
i'm about to have a ball in here. had to do a double take at the timestamp...wow! thank you john for uploading this. you could have just kept it for yourself as a keepsake, but i'm glad you're sharing this part of you with us. i always love to see more of your long-form content!
10:31:48 stay unexpect(ed)
i am only 40 minutes in but when you pulled out your the birthday massacre collection, i literally gasped out loud. i haven't been able to buy music in awhile but they're one of my favourite bands of all time. seeing that collection was legitimately exciting for me haha. a guy in my theatre class in college got me into them (i think he heard them off myspace too) and i've been obsessed for over a decade now. i used to listen to them at work, too.
also re: between the buried and me. yeah i feel the same. i want to like them more than i do. they're great but i can't get as into them as i wish i could. that said their instrumentals really are just incredible. i'm really enjoying this so far!!! really nice to have on and surprisingly more engaging than i would have expected.
YES BRO!!! I didn’t think many people knew about them
It only took 4 months, but I finally finished watching through the whole vid! This was fun, so wanted to be sure I caught it all! Thanks for sharing and encouraging folks to branch out of their comfort zones.
The way I screamed when you got to Nightwish! Thank you for this sick ass video, proud of you for being able to let them go.
Oh wow, didn't know they were still around! I loved their early stuff, might need to check out their newer tunes.
im currently sick with the flu and have been intermittently catching minutes of sleep here and there and this video is keeping me same right now.... plus I'm learning a lot about metal albums! thanks john 🙏
So excited for this long video, it's so interesting to listen to someone talk about their personal items because there are always great stories and memories behind them so I'm glad you decided to share this with us even though it could of been just a personal dump and declutter.
Keep the collection for your kids! These albums will be worth a lot of money one day, believe it or not. Even if sentimental value =)
Oh my God. Every Time I Die, Hum, Ulver, Katatonia, Gorod, Agalloch. You are a bag of surprises, John!
John first of all you look so beautiful with that hair!! And loving this video so far and loving the fact that you're just doing whatever you're vibing
Omg 11 hours John video !!!!!! This is awesome CANT wait too see John’s collection
Admittedly jumping around the video, but I'm loving all the DFW representation between Element Eighty and Toadies! I went to high school in Keller and remember riding around with a buddy of mine blasting their CD when it was new. My wife and I actually saw Toadies live in Dallas several years ago, too. :)
Nice! DFW has a good local rock scene. I also talked about Slow Roosevelt and Drowning Pool
Even though I didn’t watch this video. It’s John’s video and I love everything he uploads! Love you John!
Senses fail is fantastic
Senses fail's first two albums are 10/10. but i gotta go with Saves the Day in terms of favourite pop-punk band
@@anywhere_but_here you are absolutely right about their firsts two albums, everything else after ranges from 7/10-8-10. Also i think ill go check out save the day now, ill take your word for it, considering you have good taste with senses fail
Idc what john uploads, everything he uploads is a work of art and I will watch it and eat it all up
Nom nom nom 😆
I love you for dropping this, this video will keep me company while I write ❤
Good luck with it 👍👍

as someone who collects cds as well (i love physical copies of albums) this is genuinely so cool!! Thank you for sharing this 🫶
Millennium was my first album too, after my babysitter’s twin daughters destroyed my cassette tape of it 🥲 I’ll be watching this video for a couple days, thanks John!
holy shit the run time on this video
John, this was truly, truly, truly some of the most enjoyable content you've created. Don't get me wrong; your other gameplay videos are fun and gleeful in a more,, exciting way!! and you're always in my rotation for the horror game content but the coziness of just hearing you gush and talk about this huge passion of yours (and getting to know more about your formative music experiences) put a smile on my face!
Shoutouts for the Black Dahlia collection, still one of my favorite bands to this day. RIP Trevor!
RIP Trevor.
This video will take me many days to get through fully, but I love this. I'm a massive metal fan and hearing John talk about some of these bands is awesome. Also, still happy to see John doing other kinds of videos. Keep it up!
Always awesome to see you put out something different John.
Thank you for the great video John!
you should consider making a spotify playlist of your favorite song from each album!
Was so happy to see your Birthday Massacre collection. You’re absolutely right, there is no other band like them!
TBM for life! 💜
OMG this is such a present from you, John!! Thanks for the hard work, you're just the best
Need to do the same. Have crates of cds stacked 5 feet high.
Major fucking respect from me, John. In Flames, TesseracT, Soilwork, Ill Nino, Scar Symmetry, static-X, ALl that Remains.
"Where's the CD???" Is the best jump scare of 2023
Thank you for The Birthday Massacre and The Browning! I fell in love with them on the first seconds of listening. I hope I'll finish watching this video someday... So many new names!
Also love those two bands 😍
Well this is a great video to watch on my long public transport trips. I trust John does some research just in case any are fairly valuable.
Played this in the background. Quite relaxing. Thank you for sharing John ^_^
Dude, I also just saw Gojira in okc. And god damn, they blew blew Mastodon and and Lorna Shore into orbit.
Your nightwish takes brought me back to being 14 fr. I was OBSESSED. Was talking recently about how im convinced the public perception to the nightwish drama would be like,, a complete 180 from what i remember at the time if it were today. I remember me and my little goth friends on tumblr thinking his weird tarja angst songs were so ~ haunting and emotional ~ and the fact he didnt let it go was ~tragically beautiful~ (wtf were we ok😭) now its just,, yeah 'cringe and weird' is the perfect description, actually insane 😭😭😭
Honestly always really liked Floor.
However, much as I love your presentation and such, I don’t have… {looks at total time} WOAH.
I was always so glad I grew up in a house with a giant CD collection and want to pass that gift on.
soulseek + foobar2000
I completely forgot that the Lateralus CD packaging is like that. Thanks for unlocking that old memory.
I appreciate you powering through an 11 hour video. Cause it got me through my 8 hour shift today. Made the day a lot better. I also collect CD's and have a lot of the same ones you do. Cool to see. Love your work keep it up 🔥
P.S. Remember when John used to use Artificial Construct as his outro? Good times.
I had completely forgotten about the song Amber. Instantly downloaded it as soon as John sung it. I think imma get a lot of songs from this video lol
Aw man that Structures record is one of my favorite proggy albums. Glad to hear you gave Norma Jean a good word in, they're one of my favorite bands.
11 hours!? Whoa! Backstreet Boys - yeh! OK I'm getting snacks.... would love to be nosy and hear more about your music collection 😂
can’t wait to watch all of this through a couple of days and see your passion. i got into vinyl a year ago so physical media isn’t completely lost, john! but decluttering is also important from time to time. love your content :)
Did I skip straight to the existential crisis and then go back to start watching from the beginning? yes I did.
Love this. You are one of the only other people that I know that loves The Birthday Massacre like I do. They are so great!
I too absolutely love The Birthday Massacre 💜🖤
MILLENNIUM WAS MY FIRST ALBUM TOO! 🖤 I'm sure lots of us around our age can say the same, lol. BSB isn't a phase, MOM

Wow no idea you had such a huge collection.
