Lone Star Grillz vs. Stick Burn - Rib Shoot Out for Best Smoke Flavor

  • I recently purchased a Lone Star Grillz 20" x 42" Pellet Smoker. While waiting for Lone Star to fabricate the pellet smoker over this last winter (2021/2022), I also fabricated a 40" x 24", reverse flow stick burn smoker. In this video, we put the two to the test for the best smoke flavor. Both smokers unique in their own way, but one (by this group of "BBQ connoisseurs") gets awarded the best smoke flavor.

    Great vid. I have a LSG pellet being built right now. Stick burners are great and I understand they may be slightly better however, I love the convenience of a pellet. I put on at 10 pm, go to bed, get up at 6, do a spritz and its great by lunch time. It comes out great and most people cant tell the difference. It is romantic to babysit a fire for 12 hours however for those of us with jobs and families...pellet all the way. done.

    Great vid, thanks! I’m really torn between a LSG pellet and their traditional offset. I think the tipping point for me will be that I like cooking BBQ often/on workdays, and that’s just about what a pellet smoker is all about.

    Pretty cool video Chad thx for sharing....looks like you have a great setup out there. How do the temps compare from the top grate of the offset to the top grate of the the LSG? My LSG offset top grate is easily 50 degrees hotter than the bottom. My LSG pellet doesn't very 10 degrees top to bottom. Like to hear your thoughts. Thx again!!

    • @chadpeterson6805
      @chadpeterson6805  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You bet & thanks for the good words! I have fun with this stuff & can’t wait to do more videos 😁. My pellet is just like yours, very stable temps all over the place…typically a 5-10 difference from top to bottom. My reverse flow is on average 25-50 warmer up top. If I run the bottom to maintain 225 the top will be 250. If I run the bottom at 250-275, the top will be about 300. For this comparison I ran them both so upper racks were both at 250, my reverse flow had points where it was closer to 225 & that’s why those ribs had a little more bite/pull but not much. On my reverse flow, both bottom & top are dead even from side to side!

    Chad, does the LSG produce constant smoke? It seems it did from the video

  • @Viper515
    @Viper515 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really appreciate this video and the amount of time I could see the LSG pellet grill in view. The thing never stops smoking, does it? Is there anything you DON'T like about it/wish was different? I've been mildly obsessing about ordering one of these, but I haven't yet. How does the smoke flavor compare to your RecTeq? I like RecTeq, but I sometimes feel like they are so focused on maintaining a tight temp, that it doesn't get as much opportunity to create much smoke (I have an older Timberline that operates the same way, tight temp control, but not as much smoke).
    Thanks for sharing this video. Look forward to seeing more on the LSG. Also, amazing stick burner you've made. Thing looks amazing.

      Hey thanks for the good words bud! I love this pellet rig, I built my own racks for it to replace theirs because that’s what I do on the side lol! Just made them out of square tubing do they are more stable & don’t flex. Theirs are made of angle iron. They’re certainly not bad but it’s the first thing I noticed 🤣. Most wouldn’t even think about it. Only other thing is the hopper lid has no hinge, it drives me nuts & I’m going to mount one myself. I also would’ve welded the bottom piece of expanded steel under the lower storage area instead of on top as it would look cleaner that way! Nothing major, but I’m anal & you asked lol…just being honest here! That’s it, love everything else about it.
      We’re going to do the same comparison with this vs. the recteq Bull soon. That will be a good! IMO this LSG pellet has more smoke flavor than the recteq, but it’s nothing night & day like this stick burn. We’ll see soon 😁.
      Yeah recteq runs super tight & that’s exactly the difference between it & the LSG…this guy never stops, ever!!! It’s awesome & build quality on this is way up there vs my recteq smokers, that is night & day!

  • @M4ttNet
    @M4ttNet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great vid, really interested to see you compare this to the Recteq. Curious on flavor, quality, ease of cleaning etc? It's really hard to find real comparisons between pellet smokers that are useful.

    • @chadpeterson6805
      @chadpeterson6805  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Honestly there is no comparison! As far as flavor, they both make great tasting food. LSG has a bit more smoke flavor but nothing night & day. You simply only get so much smoke flavor from a pellet rig. The LSG has twice the smoke output vs the recteq, but doesn’t taste twice as smokey is what I’m trying to say lol!
      Quality, LSG hands down! Everything about it, for example LSG is fully welded 3/16” chamber vs recteq pop rivited & silicone sheet metal chamber. LSG has premium everything…paint, wheels, cart/framing to the controller by fireboard which is absolutely awesome!
      Cleaning is a breeze with the fire pot dump. 2 latches, it slides out to dump & put it back in. Turn the valve to dump the grease once in a while aswell as vacuuming the ash, hardly ever. No more dog walking away with the grease pail 🤣🤣.
      Honestly, comparing the 2 isn’t really correct. 2 completely different levels. Both are at the top in their own level though I believe.

    • @davidstiver2304
      @davidstiver2304 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was in an LSG group, one of the guys that has both said you better off getting the rectec. the LSG doesn't produce any better food and cost way more. its a great built machine, but your basically paying for a lot of thick gauge steel metal that you don't need on a pellet smoker. and in my opinion and I know many others that have the lsg smoker don't like it because it produces way too much dirty smoke. just look at the smoke from both in the beginning of the video.

    Hey Chad! Bought my shelf for the Bull from you a couple of years ago. Funny when I saw you pan over to the dual 7’s I knew exactly who you were then checked the name lol. So o got to ask I’ve been rolling with my bull for 2 years now and man I love it when it’s working. However as I wait for another board (3rd one so far) I started checking out the LSG and also just going back to stick burner aka my old Lang.
    In seriousness I know you can’t beat stick burner flavors but pellet continence is hard to beat. Do you feel that the LSG is a much better build quality over the recteq’s and that the flavor is any better or same as your bulls?

    Great video! It's a relief to see a review of something where someone actually bought the item so can be honest about it. I've got a Big Green Egg and have owned an RT-700 and Stampede from Recteq and had to replace the controller twice in each of the Recteqs the first year I owned them. We are putting in a pool and backyard kitchen and I am in search of the BEST pellet grill you can get. I liked the Recteqs when they worked - one time it quit working was Thanksgiving morning with Turkeys waiting to go on. I was looking at Pitts and Spitts, Yoder, Memphis and as of tonight the LSG. Just wondering if you have experience with the other ones? Thanks!

They’re behind times on controllers aswell. Never owned a Yoder, but friends that do…I also see a lot of Yoder owners switching to the LSG pellet. I know absolutely nothing about the Memphis rigs.

      I can also give my opinion here. I recently got the LSG 20x42 pellet and its a freaking beast. Amazing BBQ that my wife and daughter also love. I haven't done a lot of cooks on her yet but enough that i can say its an amazingly well built and that the off road package is worth the price if you have to move her as i do. I would hate to move her with any casters.
      This pit smokes beautifully and goes all day and night if needed. Love the freedom of set it up like my last Brisket. Put on at 9 pm 225. Go to bed whenever, wake up at 6:30 and check the pit and she is purring along. You will love it.
      Also a major thing with pellets. NOT ALL PELLETS ARE CREATED EQUAL. I'll say it again . NOT ALL PELLETS ARE CREATED EQUAL. this video didn't say what brand of pellets that was used. But IT MATTERS. TRUST ME IT MATTERS.
      KNOTTY WOOD. IN MHO IS TOPS FOLLOWED BY COOKIN PELLETS. All else are either ok or i wont use like Traeger pellets. KNOTTY WOOD is coming out (as its in prototype type now) with a wine infused version with both their Almond and Plum. Good Lord when its available i will buy a palet of each. I can't wait for that. I’ll build these as time allows…I don’t have much of it lol! Still super busy with my slider systems for the Recteq smokers. I just finished a 24x60 standard offset. I settled on a unique/different deflector plate that works rediculously good…lots of testing with them 😁. Anyhow a 24x48 is in the 5,500 range, plus or minus depending on steel pricing at the time. Problem is I just build these for local folks to pick up…just don’t want to deal with crating & shipping. Possibly down the road.
