  • Today is an exciting day for the dairy herd, because they are getting the large square bales from out west! This is some really nice hay and the cows produce well after eating it. It’s always exciting to watch the cows realize that they are getting something they haven't had for awhile. Thank you all for watching! We hope you enjoy the video!

Back when I use to farm [25 yrs ago] we farmed just like you. Our hurdle was the snow belt of New York living on "mountain it was a mile up the road to the farm". Throw snow into air and watch it blow to the bottom sometimes. Many times snow with green grass at the bottom of hill. When you can't see your hand in front of your face. Winter a hate love relationship. The smells of winter linger even now. Many winter piling manure because too much snow. A snow blower a must. 80 to 100 in normal. Wind and sub zero temp what made it hard. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. It made me and my boys what we are today! I just wish more people could understand what we had and you have. I "laugh" at your snow but love the content. Many memories. Many stories.

I don't mind the cold but I hate the snow and it's really hard on the cattle. I feed cattle, cut fire wood , logs , sawmill, repair and build things. Take care be safe and well.

Being short, walking through snow was the best thigh work out all winter. Otherwise, fresh snow, blue, completely unspoiled by footprints or skittering leaves, sparkling in the moonlight is the most beautiful thing on the planet.

When we had cows my dad would put bedding in the part of the pole shed with a electric fence for the cows to lay in with a heated water tank then sometimes we would bedded their stalls and they stay in the barn for the night and cleaned gutters every day now that cows are no longer here we just sell big bales to people who are interested

Winter was always special as a kid. Like a great adventure. Spent time at my Gramps homestead and I was the designated shovel guy. Gramp would put the chains on his Dodge and off we would go. He carried mail for years so even after he retired he always wanted to check the neighbors on his route. We’d swap a story and then back home to fill up the wood burner with some apple firewood.

I remember climbing the upright silo and forking silage down the shute then go feed it all by Manuel means.

I agree with your dad dry and cold, we don’t use near as much bedding as well, also I prefer the ground to be frozen before it snows so we can haul manure, get to the woods to skid logs, and the driveways stay frozen to haul grain with the semi, but we take what we get eh

Hey, guys! I accidentally came across your TH-cam video, after watching it, I decided to subscribe to your channel. I am from Russia, I live near the city of Nizhny Novgorod in a rural area. Your topic about the farm and agriculture is familiar and interesting to me. My whole childhood was spent on the farm where my parents worked. I myself work in the production of aerated concrete blocks, but I always like to look at the work of farmers. Rural life is difficult, but beautiful. You have such a cool agricultural machinery. Good luck with your business! I'm waiting for new videos.

I love large square bales. Easy to handle and stack inside the barn as well. I am definitely envious of the snow. We had a couple of inches right at Christmas and 30 mile winds that made tremendous drifts here but that has been all we have had.

I’ve recently retired, here in western Wisconsin we have about two feet of snow on the ground some places less with a hard crust and ice I’m currently making preparations to start cutting down trees were the woods borders the field. I don’t like the real cold anymore I did a lot of wood cutting in the winter when I was younger. Not anymore, now it’s a warm cab or warm house.

I remember at -30 my brother and I would take a big sled made out of plywood put 15 small square bales, and 4 sacks of feed and cow manger sweepings and pull it like a team of horses to feed the heifers about a third of a mile one way. Then we could let tractor warm up a little more on the block heaters before cleaning barns. It wasn't all that bad. Now it's a fond memory. Back then we didn't have the heated shop that we have today.

My farm was right on Lake Ontario in Northern New York our winter’s were hard, and long we had 60 Registered Holstein’s Plus, live stock right around a 100 head. At that time my larg tractor was a JD 4000 that I bought at a auction it hd just been rebuilt and produced quite a bit over 100 hp as crazy as it sounds I used to love putting on my Carhartt’s and spread manure with that tractor. People have always thought I’m crazy but that’s ok because I’m kind, and like people I began watching your podcast 2 days ago, it’s made want to start doing something with my farm I’m 77 years old but still am pretty rugged. I haven’t heard on your podcast what State are you in? Thank You John Humphrey

Here on our Western Pennsylvania beef operation that was formerly dairy, we operate much like you folks . Cattle work still takes up two to three hours of work everyday we still find time to clean out fence rows and do other woods work, plus shop work and keeping our custom ground feed business going winter other than Christmas weekend has been pretty nice in Western PA. Our precipitation has been coming more in the form of rain rather than snow, which of course we don't have to shovel or push out of the way or pile up. The only thing is we are dealing with mud I always say when it gets like this do you have a winter like this everyday you get th that's not causing weather issues he's one more day closer to spring I'll take the rain over the snow.

My favorite part of winter is a nice warm wood fire. Also I like being able to concentrate on caring for the animals without having to worry about tending to the crops. Everything hunkers down and rests. Some of the Swiss immigrants surnamed Ragatz were the first to settle in my Sauk County, Troy township back in the 1830's. One of them wrote down what a shock the Wisconsin winters were in contrast to the Alpine winters they were accustomed to back in Switzerland. They lost considerable livestock, hogs in particular, during the harsh winter their first year. They soon learned how to adapt to the new climate and we, their descendants, rest comfortably warm as do our livestock. It's one of the joys of winter. God's people still learn to adapt to climate change. One part of his wonderful grace. I should have said earlier it was not Troy township but was Honey Creek just beyond our property in Troy.

Your canine supervisors are hard at it , I had German shepherds and they used to love to play in the snow . The snow gives time , you have to consider your moves , make sure there's a fire lit , cos snow strips body heat faster than most things . Your beautiful farm takes on a great atmosphere . Stay warm , great video 👍🇬🇧

In eastern Canada on our small livestock farm my favorite part is on a cold stormy night after cattle are bedded with fresh straw and the feed bunks are full, that gives me a great sense of accomplishment. My 11 year old son says his favorite part of winter is plowing snow with our new Holland 170 skid steer.
