She is PRECIOUS. O'Connell's dragged out of a cell, in a 1920's Egyptian prison, and her first remark is "Ooh! you grew your hair out!" Such innocence.

Winston: I wish I went down with all the other laddies instead sitting here dying of boredom and booze" I hope I got that line right.
Winston: HERE I COME LADDIES! AHAHAHAHAHA!
Winston knew he was about to die, and was happy about it because he was going to join all his friends. Then died with a smile on his face.
Probably one of the biggest overlooked side plots in this movie.
    Really touching honestly.

I agree completely. This was all Winston wanted: dying heroically and meeting up with the lads who were waiting for him on the other side and saying "Let me tell you about my last adventure!" That smile on his face said it all. Rest in Peace Winston, you legend!

This movie is a classic because it has so many great elements working together. Great characters (handsome, smart, funny), great sets, humorous and scary parts, and the VFX on the mummy are still pretty good. Love me a good adventure film like this.

  • @Firefax
    @Firefax ปีที่แล้ว +95

This movie was filmed in a very old-fashioned style in that no one is actually seen dying (except for the mummy at the end). All the deaths are represented by screams from off-camera or as shadows on the wall which is very much in the style of old-time monster movies. All of the horror is left to your imagination. A very nice salute to the original horror genre by Stephen Somers.

The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evy described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission: they used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the rain brained out when they were rolled over). And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie.

This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, and very nostalgic now. An exciting adventure with some mystery, well-defined characters, some scary parts for chidren but not too scary, some funny scenes but done in a way that the humor doesn't detract from the action, the main characters are likeable, etc. It is well-rounded overall, I would say. Just light enough so that it's fun but doesn't feel too silly. Also Rachel Weisz is just gorgeous, I had a big crush on her when I was a kid due to this film.

Addie, it's on point that this reminded you of Indiana Jones. From what I understand, this film was initially conceived and written as a reboot of the old-school mummy monster horror movies (film cousins to the movies featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman). However, the project didn't gain any traction until it was re-envisioned as more of an action adventure film in the style of -- you guessed it -- Indiana Jones.

My late wife Debbie and I viewed this one upon its original theatrical release, and since I currently own the DVD trilogy (including the Tom Cruise version and all of the 1930s through '50s franchise issues), this probably bewrays my very strong interest in the entire series. Debs worked for a time @ a CPA firm in which Brendan Fraser was a client and she acquired his autograph right around the time this film was issued, so that's one of my inherited (and somewhat prized) possessions of hers.

When Benny goes through all of his religious pendants around his neck, when he gets to the David's Star (the Jewish one), he starts speaking in Hebrew; the Jews were enslaved by the Egyptians for 5,000 years, so Imhotep recognizes the language that the slaves that he saw spoke in his original life

I love, love, love, LOVE The Mummy! I crushed hard on Rachel Weisz when this came out, and the music, by the late/great Jerry Goldsmith, is some of his best work! I bought the entire soundtrack years ago. I love the closing credits with that score - so sweeping and romantic - playing over the images Egyptian ruins and hieroglyphics spelling out the actor's names. Just a wonderful homage to classic film (and even classic radio) that isn't done much anymore.
The second movie is noticeably weaker, and I think their big mistake was jumping ahead 10 years, from 1922 to 1932, and inserting a kid into the action. They also wrote the movie with a kid in mind, which made it seem childish at times. If I had control over the franchise and had the actors signed to a three-film deal, I would have given O'Connell and the gang a different adventure in the second film, set some time around, say, 1925-27, and then a final film with a plot similar to the Mummy Returns, now with the kid, but written better. Write the kid the way kids were written in movies like The Goonies.

    LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
So much better than the god awful 2017 Tom Cruise reboot that supposed to be the start of The Dark Universe, which is Universal's version of the MCU but with classic monsters.
Anyway, in the early '90's, Wes Craven, John Landis, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Clive Barker, Mick Garris, Joe Dante and George Romero were considered for directing the movie, until Stephen Sommers, a fan of the original, was picked after his last film DEEP RISING, bombed at the box office in 1998.
Before Brendan Fraser was cast as the hero, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Brad Pitt were considered.
The film was a box office and critical success, making $420 million dollars against a $75 million dollar budget.

4:00 The Domino book shelf gag is a real old vaudeville joke.
I actually tried to make this happen in a real library once. I pushed really really hard on the top shelf library shelf. Guess what happened... Nothing. I busted the myth so fast make your head swim. There's a reason why this can never happen in a library. All those shelves are bolted down tight to the floor to the point where the floor is part of the shelf. If you ever managed to push yourself down it's because the floor would be rotted. If they all collapse that means the floor needs replaced anyway. Either that or the people who put the shelves up or incompetent and didn't anchor them to the floor. But in a lottery that big and old all the shells have been bolted to the floor.
So if he really wants to blame anybody he really should blame himself. Because he's the curator of the library which makes the shelves his responsibility. If he didn't bolt them to the floor it's not her fault they collapsed.

The 1999 remake of 'The Mummy' is much loved by tabletop gamers , partly because it's just plain fun, but also because it's a terrific example of a classic Dungeons & Dragons dungeon crawl, but set in the early 20th Century. The later remake with Tom Cruise takes itself far too seriously.

Fun Fact. This movie, specifically Eevee is based directly off a real story of a British girl who claimed to be the reincarnation of an Egyptian woman, this girl ended up leading archeologists to huge discoveries, they found an entire secret room in a Temple that no one knew about, and many other things
She said she had "memories" of it from her past life

After nearly 20 years of the action adventure genre which mix 'hardcore' action, a bit of gore and lot's of comedic quips, The Mummy was right in line with the classics from the 80's. Watching Addie cringe with dread left me wondering if most young people whom didn't have my experiences growing up felt the same. I will admit this one is a bit more 'horror' than the following entries while all 3 have been in my watch rotation since release. Evie isn't frightened by anything other than Mr. O'Connell's manners though. Because I enjoyed Stephen Sommer's approach to these stories - Van Helsing also joined my watch list.

Awesome reaction, Addie. So glad that you were finally able to conquer your middle school fears. My late middle school history with this movie was a lot different because at the time, I actually liked The Mummy (1999), and I still do as an adult. It's one of my favorite Universal Monster movies. I even enjoyed Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood & Florida. You should also check out its two sequels The Mummy Returns (2001) & The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) and its spin-off The Scorpion King (2002). Oh, and a head's up, TMR has two snake scenes & TSK has three. You can do this, Addie.

BTW, you're not alone on avoiding this movie in the past because, like I've mentioned before, my girlfriend still avoids it due to her mummy phobia. I bet she would've done the same thing that you did, back in middle school.

The two borderline movies I remember seeing in school were James Cameron's Titanic, and the 1960s Romeo and Juliet. Both in the same AP English class, so they technically were being shown for their "storytelling techniques". But I was just surprised because we didn't skip over the scene of Jack drawing Rose in Titanic, and in Romeo and Juliet there's a scene where there's some Juliet nudity but the girl was only like 16 at the time, IIRC, which just seemed like a doubly whammy of a "no-no" for showing in a high school lol. But apparently the laws for underage nudity in movies weren't put in place for decades after that one, so it's technically legal... still feels really weird, though.

@@Galiant2010 Haha that's kinda wild. I think the most edgy thing we ever had in school was my psych teacher showing us My Cousin Vinny which if you've ever seen is just constant "f'*** this" and "f*** that" from beginning to end haha Nothing with nudity or anything like The Mummy.
