A haunting fever dream of a series. Sturrbridge is the perfect Morpheus. Luv that his acting is subtle and not over the top, which matches what Gaiman says about the character having to carry the weight of every dream ever dreamed. Amazing aesthetics and design. Season 2 needs to get officially greenlit.
“…the Corinthian is a metaphor for how in today’s society, we don’t feel empathy for one another, and we’re all just rampant consumers.” -cut to commercial. Well played, Ryan. Well played.
This was an amazing recap and analysis, Ryan! Thank you for not spoiling future storylines even tho I knew exactly what you were referring to every time you said you were not going to spoil a future event (I’ve read the entire run of the original series)
Always heard about how Sandman was a great read back when it first came out but I wasn't ready then for the depths that Neil Gaiman was telling. Once I saw interviews of how deeply Neil was involved in this series, I knew it was time to give it a chance...and I'm glad I did! The story of the Dream Lord was ahead of its time and was shackled by initially being connected to DC Supes IMO It deserved to be retold in this manner (10 eps vs. a 2.5hr movie) to give the characters better context as the story moves along. Not only does the invention of streaming benefit this content, but the world is more accepting of fluid identities (what I meant by "ahead of its time") = The story was more appreciable due to the fact such diverse representation was incorporated to tell it = great job!
Just a note too. When we see Jed as "Sandman" he is wearing a version of Dreams jewel on his neck. Hob probably painted the arrows on the fence if the Inn. A comic tie-in (one of many I know), Matthew is from Swamp Thing. And IF they do it Barbie and Donna (Judy's gf from the Diner) will meet at some point.
Thanks, that was a good recap. You explained several things I didn't know. I don't like the screen shots from other media though, they were distracting and they didn't match.
You know, I'm pretty intrigued by your idea that the Vortex was breaking down the walls between the Endless' realms in addition to the barriers between dreamers' minds. Absent Brute and Glob's very particular scheme from the comic, it's a good way of headcanoning how Lyta and Hector can meet in her dreams. Also, I don't think Desire raped Unity in the show. They seem to have changed things so they more seduce her in dreams and got her pregnant through a consensual relationship much as Hector and Lyta conceived Daniel.
Hey, the mention of Daniel is a spoiler! Viewers don't know yet! I doubt the show will get this far but it's possible. Also the show suggested that Desire seduced Unity in her dreams but that would mean Desire crossed Morpheus's Realm while he was imprisoned, that would've broken the kingdom rule. The books didn't break that rule and Desire raped Unity instead so I can see how Ryan got mixed up between the books and show since he's a fan of the books.
I love the fact that you know as much as I about this story (one of very few DC would allow to end) and won't give spoilers. I've never heard you say, I won't go on to tell you , in any other video. Kudos and a dog treat!
I would have liked to have seen more of Desire and Lucifer, it felt like they were barely in it. But I did enjoy it overall and looking forward to season 2
I knew nothing about Sandman as this is past my comic generation but I absolutely fricking adored it!! I cried during the angel of death episode. This was beautifully done and I had no idea where any of it was going. SO GOOD!
i think your recap / explanation videos are the best ones. I don't know if it's your pleasant voice, the cute dog, or just the best writing. I know a LOT of channels feel the need to explain the endings of literally everything, everywhere, all of the time, but your videos seem more rounded and less condescending. You certainly earn the upvote everytime.
The why files!!!!! He literally stole their whole show talkinG animal an all n this shows no where near as GooD as The Why Files smh so Dont give em too much credit
I think the pep talk scene was necessary since at that time Dream was pretty unsure about his abilities because he had been recently trapped by a human and now he was facing one of the most powerful being in existence. The raven talking to him reminds him about humans and something he witnessed about them "hope".
id never read the comic and thought the first 3 or for episodes were plodding along in its world-building, but once it all clicked for me around ep 5 i was thoroughly engrossed. i think im gonna have to buy the compendiums now.

Omg amazing show! Already ordered the graphic novel to read it, can’t wait for the next season. Praying that Netflix won’t decide to cancel it like they’ve done with other great shows
I wish this is one of those series where they actually dive into the character background more. I don’t wanna hear about dream & calliope’s relationship. I want to see that. I want to see more of the endless lead up to their lives. I want to see the dream vortex’s and how to handle them
I didn't know about the DC comics, when I watched this on Netflix I tought it became my favorite immediately. The story is extra ordinary. I feel I am watching a movie out of this world I feel like it's so real and I would like to speak with Morpheus the Dream Lord. After that I am surprised it was made by DC comics.
I loved this sooooooooo much. Dont care about anything i didnt like just show me where to buy a tiny Corinthian skull and I will be smiling forever. Its my favorite comic of all time brought to life. The end. So giddy!
I don't know anything about this series, what all I know is that I am certain that Ryan will use the Kevin Bacon clip more often in his future videos. It's so hilarous :D
Also, the motivation for desire to do what it does is... because desire IS desire. It wants. It doesn't care if it attains what it wants - all desire does is want. Dreams imprisonment allowed desire to infiltrate the dreaming to cause nightmare and dreams to want things beyond their original design. Remember - there isn't necessarily a ultimate goal to desires actions. The actions are the goal themselves.
Encephalitis Lethargica is the disease referenced in The Sandman. It is a neurological disorder that afflicted nearly a million people starting in 1916.
Maybe worth noting that at least in the comics the "rule" against the Endless spilling family blood isn't one they've imposed upon themselves, merely one that Desire is seeking to take advantage of. I won't go into more detail to respect the need not to spoil comics details, but it does wind up tying back into something else in this season. Uncle Neil rather brilliantly seeded so much of the ultimate story from the very beginning and the show looks to be following suit while remixing certain elements! Beautiful adaptation of a masterpiece (though agreed on Matthew's "pep talk". 😜)!
I thought it was magnificent and well done it was missing the full telling of Nada’s story but I think they’ll eventually get to it, it did not dawn on me that was Hector Hall & Hippolyta Hall where the Heroes silver scarab /Dr Fate/Sandman and Fury it was so long ago when I read it they did a great job adopting and adapting the story.
Hey I know this isn't relevant to any current ip coming out, but can u please do a video about why in the matrix world Morphius was wrong and The Architect was right? 🙏🙏🙏
So far the adaptation has lived up to my expectations entirely and it is just AWESOME!! I read these books when I was a teenager, and now here we are 30 years later and it's all done so beautifully!! I'm really impressed by it. The few changes have been either not important, or for the better. Like how Brute & Glob are made into one being with a better motivation. Or more recently how Calliope was given a more Grecian appearance than was in the comics, and Dream is less cold to her desire to visit him in the Dreaming.
I absolutely loved this adaptation! I read the graphic novels in the mid 90s, and loved them. To see them brought to life like this is just fabulous. I can't wait for season 2.
Ok but that pep talk is what makes the show perfect. The entire thing is about Dream realizing he's not fallible, cares for others, has friends who care for him and its ok to lean on them.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who disliked the pep talk by Mathew. It undermined Dream’s intelligence and genuinely made the moment feel like a CW show.
A masterpiece show. There were a few things changed from the comicbook, but the TV adaptation was great with scenes that literally came from the book. Waiting for Season 2 to arrive will seem like a distant dream! 😉👍
I think "The Sandman" was the best adaptation of Gaimen's works. It was stunning as a graphics novel and the movie kept it stunning. I think they cast both Dream, the Devil and Desire perfectly.
Would also like to recommend here the beautiful audio adaptation of Sandman on Audible. It has a stacked cast headed by James McAvoy as the title character. Him and Sturridge in live action really do embody the character so well. Having recently finished the audiobooks to then see this in live action has made me a fan. Can't wait for the next season's story arcs.
I was on the fence of the raven Matthew at first, but seeing how they are dual opposites.....I enjoined him. I just loved all of it, binged watched all of in one day.
Long time fan of the comic, and like you, had no notes for the show. It's amazing, and I think it could be Netflix's next major vehicle, like Stranger Things turned out to be.
Never read Sandman. I love Constantine/Hellblazer and that's all I know about Sandman. The show was fantastic. Johanna Constantine is an interesting change that's written well enough to be her own character. Has season 2 gotten the green light yet?
One of the most interesting things about this whole story is the mixing of myths, legends and even religion. The fates are clearly adapted from Greek Mythology whereas Lucifer is Judeo-Christian. She makes mention of eventually expanding hell all the way to the `Silver City`. This makes the motivations of the characters a bit abstract, but ultimately gives the story more depth. Desire is a really interesting character and I look forward to their development. Lucifer as well. Desire and Despair as twins is pretty brilliant as well. It's almost a play off of Buddhist theology. Desire and ignorance lie at the root of suffering (despair.) All in all, a very entertaining story that I look forward to seeing more seasons of. Eventually I'll read the comics anyway, but not just yet!
Your reference to Buddhist text is excellent, as well as your other comments: I’m so glad that I made a commitment to watching this series, just one episode at a time...until episode 6 had me totally hooked! I’m looking forward to the next series (the diamond-cut-diamond sparring between Dream & Desire is irresistible) A tale well-told! Thank you for your interesting post... 🙏🏻💔🙏🏽

Either that or it's just a compilation of one-off episodes with no connection to one another except for some little easter eggs and references. I really like the early modern-Doctor Who era for this reason.
neil gaiman: find me an actor to play the main character that looks like me 40 years ago…
Truly amazing how your dog is always able to ask the most relevant & enlightening questions ..
He literally took the whole thing from another youtuber
It's Called The Why files.......So don't Give em too much credit smh
I completely enjoyed this show. I haven't read the comics but I definitely plan on it now. I think the casting was perfect & it was an absolute joy to watch with the imagery.
I agree & just started reading !
Where can I read the sandman comics? Loved the show omg I need moreeee
Oh yes, please make more videos about Sandman. It's been ages since I read them. Loved the show.
that was a majestic depiction of the series!
the part of when is person is unable to feel empathy and connect with others, how the person feels incomplete
and wants/needs more is pretty much what's wrong with our society
it's great how art reflects life
but it needs to decoded and understood
Very good job man
cheers from Athens, Greece
I really didn’t expect this series to be so good. Even shed some tears in few episodes. Really well made and looking forward to season 2.
Episode 6 was absolutely perfect! even just on it's own... This is my favorite adaptation to date hands down
🙏🏻💔🙏🏽
Desire was actually my favorite character in this first season. What a great representation!!!!! The series was fantastic and I feel stayed very true to the Gaiman style.
Same 😼 !
Eye and wardrobe candy YES but not enough to invest me emotionally. Sure there will be more.
Thank you for pointing out the important characters and events without any spoilers
This was an amazing recap and analysis, Ryan! Thank you for not spoiling future storylines even tho I knew exactly what you were referring to every time you said you were not going to spoil a future event (I’ve read the entire run of the original series)
Bingewatched the series and I'm hungry for more.
With Morpheus unable to enforce the rules do you really think Desire would respect them? That seems out of character to me.
False pretenses, but by American law “consensual” 🤷🏽♀️
I love the fact that you know as much as I about this story (one of very few DC would allow to end) and won't give spoilers. I've never heard you say, I won't go on to tell you , in any other video. Kudos and a dog treat!
I would have liked to have seen more of Desire and Lucifer, it felt like they were barely in it. But I did enjoy it overall and looking forward to season 2
Everytime Desire is on screen it feels like a MV(music video) is abt to start 👀
The Corinthian actor did such a great job. Epic performance
Sandman is brilliant all the episodes 8/10 perfect casting all the characters 🔥👌
I’d love to see you do a spoiler laden comic comparison for those of us who read them ages ago but could use some refreshers!
I'm glad this breakdown exists, I really wanna read comics and wanted no spoilers for future seasons. Great video!
This was more than I ever expected, absolutely brilliant. Glad Gaiman waited until tech was strong enough to rep his vision.
Who ever is playing Dream is really handsome ;)
@MenaceInc :D
The actor looks mid without that haircut ngl..
I think you could say, he is the man of your...dreams?
That Rocky themesong made me cough , snort, laugh and spit all at the same time. I nearly died!!! 😂
Gonna watch this video when I'm done. Thx for posting! ❤️
id never read the comic and thought the first 3 or for episodes were plodding along in its world-building, but once it all clicked for me around ep 5 i was thoroughly engrossed. i think im gonna have to buy the compendiums now.
This show was released barely 24 hours ago, yet you guys have had the video up for almost 24 hours. It baffles me how you are able to churn these things out so quickly.
Omg amazing show! Already ordered the graphic novel to read it, can’t wait for the next season. Praying that Netflix won’t decide to cancel it like they’ve done with other great shows
Show was awesome! Imaginative and superb cinematography
The end. So giddy!
My thought exactly about the skull lol
I don't know anything about this series, what all I know is that I am certain that Ryan will use the Kevin Bacon clip more often in his future videos. It's so hilarous :D
I have to compliment you and thank you for the best review I have read thus far.
The Sandman was amazing from start to finish. Such a well done series. My only critique was that it was too short. Can’t wait fro the next season.
Loved the Twin peaks references
Oh great video once again! Cheers!
This is such a good breakdown of the storyline.
Sturridge/Dream and Matthew remind me of Vampire Hunter D and his hand being. Wonder which came first. Loving the show, I am hope.
I loved this show, can’t wait for Season 2
That's if we even get a season 2. It's Netflix after all. They cancel so many good shows after one season!
I finished the 1st season and can't wait for the next one. Thank you for the explanations, like how Desire were connected with Nightmare etc...
It was awesome haven’t read the comic but I did like how it seemed separate from dc besides a few references definitely worth multiple seasons
It also calls to the Fates telling Rose "at least you didn't meet us as the Kindly One's" and that really pulls Lyta into it.
@@danielk7774 oh yeah, and that even heightens the dramatic irony in this version since it wasn't Lyta who interrupted that vision in the comics!
Mr Sandman bring me a dream.
What? It's a big dog?! Hahaha 🤣 He kills me! What breed is the little guy? Shih tzu? Lhasa opsa?
So far the adaptation has lived up to my expectations entirely and it is just AWESOME!! I read these books when I was a teenager, and now here we are 30 years later and it's all done so beautifully!! I'm really impressed by it. The few changes have been either not important, or for the better. Like how Brute & Glob are made into one being with a better motivation. Or more recently how Calliope was given a more Grecian appearance than was in the comics, and Dream is less cold to her desire to visit him in the Dreaming.
This was very informative. Thanks a lot
The diner scene was awesome 👌
I absolutely loved this adaptation! I read the graphic novels in the mid 90s, and loved them. To see them brought to life like this is just fabulous. I can't wait for season 2.
I hated Gwendoline Christie's portrayal as Lucifer. She was distractedly awful imo. Loved her as Brienne, hate her in this. Desire was perfect!
Baby = Law of Suprise*
*Witcher reference
Ok but that pep talk is what makes the show perfect. The entire thing is about Dream realizing he's not fallible, cares for others, has friends who care for him and its ok to lean on them.
At the cereal convention we follow a red pair of heels with gold lions a few times in that episode. I think It was desire.
How death of granny coud stop vortex that already appeared? How does it works? Whe her granddaughter became vortex at the first place.
Glad your doing this. I loved the show. Ordered the comics.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who disliked the pep talk by Mathew. It undermined Dream’s intelligence and genuinely made the moment feel like a CW show.
I never heard of the sandman comics ..but I'll be reading it now ...loved the series!! Neil is brilliant
A masterpiece show. There were a few things changed from the comicbook, but the TV adaptation was great with scenes that literally came from the book. Waiting for Season 2 to arrive will seem like a distant dream! 😉👍
Where are the 'What I might've missed' videos for each episode? (I'm addicted.)
Sandman was sensational, and I desire more😄
Loved it can't wait for season 2 and I will check out the comics👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I think "The Sandman" was the best adaptation of Gaimen's works. It was stunning as a graphics novel and the movie kept it stunning. I think they cast both Dream, the Devil and Desire perfectly.
This was good off to find the comics!
Could you do more the sandman videos?
I just hope there is a season 2.
6:15 Isn't it every era? And isn't an era several hundred million years?
I’m looking forward to the next series (the diamond-cut-diamond sparring between Dream & Desire is irresistible)
A tale well-told! Thank you for your interesting post...
🙏🏻💔🙏🏽
Thank you, Ryan! 🗭
