    I dont think ive seen any breakdown videos mention this but in the dish "mans folly" the sous chef stabs the chef with kitchen scissors in the thigh, same thing he did to his father. I think this might be another instance of him wanting to punish himself for becoming "part of the problem", since he abused this woman, much like his father abused his mother, ofc in different manners. In a sense he became the man he once stabbed and therefore, he deserves the same punishment. at least thats what i thought of it.
    its also interesting that during this dish, while the men are running around, the women all sit together to have this meal

    My favorite bit was the “fallen angel” scene.
    This whole planned out monologue the chef had was SUPPOSED to end in silence, but because of Margot’s very existence it was ruined. Instead the chef had to give her a timer that ticked away during his perfect speech.
    A literal representation of how the chef DIDNT want to remember the good times, like a scarred man that only wants to see the bad in the world and forget the good. Except Margot managed to sneak in and throw the whole menu on its head.

    When I was in the theaters and we were leaving, I kept hearing a lot of people say how much they wanted a cheeseburger. That was such a widespread feeling. They did a great job with the whole film but that craving for a cheeseburger kind of nails the whole point home in my book.

    • @clownprince88

    • @theflight5247
      @theflight5247 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Perfect. That was the whole point. Fast food/mainstream arts sell because they give the customers exact what they want. While high end art often falls on its own sword by trying to create something for the sake of it being art. And this just proves. A cheeseburger is a simple food, a simple concept, and it's easier to digest, easier to satisfy.

    Am I the only one that thinks the clap may have been some sort of hypnosis technique?
    The chef did it before every meal which may explain the control he had over the staff and how he had one even kill himself.
    Also at the end Margot claps and they all do everything she asks, all their heads turn at the same time, they’re like soldiers on command.
    I haven’t seen anyone talk about this theory

This video was more of a summary of the plot rather than a deep dive in nuance of the movie.

      2.The reason the assistant died was because she was privileged, and had many things handed to her. To go through college without taking out student loans is expensive.(what I was told)
      3. As I said, I would answer some of these questions as acceptance. In the end they accepted the fact that they were going to die, and not only that…they realized how messed up they were. Also, I wouldn't say they were happy to die.😅 I just think it was acceptance. I don't really know what to say for that part.

    Margot was never going to die. When the boyfriend character tries cooking up food and fails miserably. Chef whispers to the dude something that was probably along the lines of “you won’t get to die on the menu tonight”. And he turns to Margot and says she is free too. That’s when he asks her to go get the barrel, we are so used to sick demented serial killers in horror movies that we thought he would have searched for her if she didn’t return. When in reality, he was giving her an out. The fact she goes and looks for the barrel is when that host lady tries killing her because she says Margot is trying to “take her spot” since she didn’t run away and followed his orders. Chef just didn’t let her leave earlier because he didn’t want to leave her enough time to go and get the cops before dessert happened

    • @IDK-ze5cc
      @IDK-ze5cc 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly don‘t think so because without the barrel the menu would have genuinely not have been able to be completed. And Elsa said that chef didn‘t ask for the barrel before. It seems more that he actually planned all of it, hence the poised cheeseburger.

    Something else I took from 'The Mess' scene, is that Jeremy did not want Slowik's life and gave up everything to become a chef. Even if he was good enough to be a top chef, I still don't think he would have been happy because he had no social life or achievements outside of cooking.
    It reminds me of the lesson that 'Always have more than one dream, or never give up everything to achieve your single dream. Because when you achieve your dream, it is either not going to be what you thought it would be, or it will be, and you will have no one to share it with.'

      I don't think she was poisoned. But, it was mentioned earlier during the tour that the meat is aged a precise amount of time, and if it is served beyond that amount of time it would be poisonous. There would be no need to add poison if the meat was just over-aged. But again, I don't think chef poisons Margot.

He was in the zone, he was really enjoying it and the last thing you think when you are in that position is wasting your food or making it inedible. People are just interpreting to much in this burger which isnt there.
      Margot said it perfectly herself "Now that is a cheeseburger" :D

    • @Slimebeast
      @Slimebeast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      People just can't be content with a "happy" ending these days. XD If anyone still thinks the meat was poisoned at the start, remember that everyone was going to die in an explosion. Why poison a group of scattered, scorched body parts? If you think they were poisoned in case someone escaped - they why wasn't the meat in the first dish? If someone escaped after the first couple dishes, they wouldn't be poisoned. The poison stuff makes no sense.

      I found it a bit heavy handed. Like the writing was on the wall about 20 mins in as to what the movie was about. It’s just so predictable and didn’t create good characters for the sake of an anti 1% message that has been told 1000 times. I loved the acting but I don’t need to be sermonized by a psychopathic killer who decided to nuke his entire workforce and a handful of rich people for a message. I definitely do not think one bit that the chef poisoned or tainted the meat in her cheeseburger. He is a chef and it would be an insult to everyone who works in this profession to do such a thing. The cheeseburger was a simple dished that stood superior over everything that he has served so far, because it was true to itself and made to be enjoyed by everyone no matter the status and anyone can cook it. It also took me awhile, but I forgot that the burger itself had bread. the very food component that the guests did not have as a mockery to them. The cheeseburger saved her because it symbolized the last faint shining goodness and love the Chef had for his passion. Not wanting the cheeseburger and her killed by his revenge, he lets her go with the cheeseburger as his true gift to his final satisfied customer.

    A detail you missed was that during the Man's Folly course, the sous-chef stabs Chef with kitchen shears, the same way Chef stabbed his father when he was a child.
    Another detail I caught was that there was an exact copy of the kitchen/dining room the guests are served at inside his cabin, showing how his life has been consumed by the fine dining industry.

    Glad to see coverage of this movie on this channel, but would have hoped for a bit more breakdown.
    One of my favorite things about the ending that I saw pointed out in another video was that Margot provided an experience for Chef Julian by recreating the experience of joy from having the desire to cook for someone (which he says he hasn't felt in years). She carefully chose her words to play the role of a customer paying a fair price for a well-made burger and gave him that experience. Just before this, Chef pegged her as a "taker" and not a "giver," but at that moment she gave him an experience he had longed for for years.
    an article had an interpretation of the tables representing each of the 7 deadly sins and Chef Julian himself representing wrath. I saw elsewhere that there were 12 guests, like Jesus' 12 disciples.
    And a bit of a stretch on my part, but I feel like I could see "Chef Julian" making himself a "Christ Jesus" type figure who dies for the capitalistic sin of killing the art of cooking by reaching his elite status and only serving the snobby, wealthy elite. But he also goes Old Testament by killing everyone. And "Margot," given her profession as an escort, becomes a "Mary Magdalene" in Chef Julian's menu.

    I’m not sure who, but someone brought up that there was a bit of information that felt like a loose thread about the aged meat. There is speculation that the meat he used to cook her the burger might have been poisoned, and the ominous sound of the chef’s clap was signaling us that he completed his menu. She becomes the message on a boat that drifts in open water with his menu she used for a napkin. Had Tyler brought the right person, would have things gone differently? Who knows? I want to believe that she survived. I can’t believe that I didn’t see that parallel from Split. Great film with biting satire all ‘round.

    I believe the clap at the end had several meanings

    3) complete the cycle which will never be complete but in constant rotation of elites and server’s

    I really appreciate it this movie. As a construction worker, I have built billion dollar hotels and multi million dollar mansions. As a carpenter, I have Bill closets that cost more than my home. None of the people I have ever built score would ever let me into their home other than to do the work. I have seen incompetent people only construction companies that wouldn’t have been able to do anything if it were not for us at the bottom being smarter than them at every turn. Also, I agree, that chef let Margo go. He would not have let her leave, and then just poison her. Nor do I think he would ruin a cheeseburger by making it out of human flesh.

    I did wonder whether the meat used in the burger was one day over its used-by-date, as discussed earlier in the film? It may have been his final 'statement' to send her off with hope, only to have her die later? Interesting that the boat she escaped in stopped shortly after her escape too? I personally think he let her go out of respect. Very ambiguous ending. Loved it.

      Additionally, we find out he's been planning this for MONTHS (Tyler being in contact with him for 8 months knowing he would die for "the greatest menu ever") and that the sous Chefs helped to plan the menu (The sous chef from Man's folly specifically states that "it was her idea" to stab chef in the leg, which implies Jeremy also came up with "The Mess" and the results of it. At first watch, it might seem that Jeremy is upset by what Chef is saying, but I think the deeper thing about "The Mess" is that Jeremy is just as beaten down by the pressures of society, not Chef himself, and that they all have this experience of being put under pressure to the breaking point.

    What no one seems to mention is how they made it a point to talk about the meat shed and how the meat will kill anyone who eats it after a specific time point. During that final bite she takes of the burger the music become slightly ominous and you can see in her face she has a realization, she then seems to accept her fate and take a last bite. My take is she was meant to die no matter what, just not die with all the others. If you also notice the boat dies on her so she ends up being stuck in the water. She was never meant to actual make it back.

    All of that. I also think the movie is not just about the restaurant industry, but also, by extension, it's a metaphor for the arts in general. The patrons of high end arts, the critics, the movie savants, etc, are impossible to please; because their taste in food is more abstract, it's taste for the sake of taste. But Margot is different because she knows what she wants; to her, food is something practical and useful. The burger, representing the fast food industry or mainstrain art,, is quick and expedient; customers get satisfied because they know what they want and these restaurants give her exactly that.

    I Loved this movie. I had a different take on the chef's clap at the end. I took it to mean that Joy's character had an epiphany. Her eyes had been opened to a new motivation. The chef saw it in her before she did, and that's why he decided thart she should be allowed to go, after all. She would go on to continue the Cheff's final work. She would go on to remove the soulless elites who treated her and other service workers like trash and continue to suck the enjoyment of life out of everything for everybody else. The sound of the clap was her train of thought and determination coming together at attention like the cooks in the kitchen awaiting their marching orders. A new birth, so to speak.

    Chef wanted her to leave, that's why he sent her to get the keg from the smokehouse. His right hand said just as she was killed that she didn't forget, Chef didn't tell her about the keg.
    He wanted her to make a real choice, fight and change rather than accept the inevitable path.
    This, I think, is further shown by the way they get to the restaurant. A boat (only one path) the tour (also one path, and something that they aren't allowed to deviate from) into the restaurant where they can't even leave the room for air.

George also had to deal with critics, Tyler-like fanboys, overwork, studio executives who are like the angel investor and finance bros, and losing the passion for acting he once had. Like Margot/Erin, he also has to pretend to be someone else and put on performances for ungrateful assholes with money. I could easily picture the actor also having an old picture of himself smiling after making his student film or in his high school drama club. However, the actor wasted his potential to do what Margot/Erin did.

      great chefs ARE obsessed and passionate of their research and menu, but that's the experience they are selling. At the end of the day there's nothing like a damn good burger and a beer if that's what the belly wants. Chef David Chang has an addiction to nuggets (nuggets are the better potato chip), Anthony Bourdain was a self confessed street food sausage lover and that's fine. Bodega food, chili cheese nachos, just a slab of fatty steak with fries.

    One scene that I wish to know more about and see people's opinion is when chef states that if they truly tried hard enough to oppose him as well as get away they would have probably had a chance in ruining his plan and escaping.
    Also a small detail I noticed that I found a good touch - when chef is speaking with John Leguizano (movie star) about the movie he acted in and why he decided he must die due to him not enjoying the movie on one of his days off (Sunday). John then asks about the faith of his spouse (why her as well?), to which chef asks her about her career and she responds is completing studies - chef then asked if she had loans for it which she responds "no" to (one can assume this is from the money she stole from John). At this point we understand she too did not have any 'suffering' in life, while although not directly rich, she was able to feed off John's riches and do her schooling paid off with the money she stole from him i.e. that's why chef thinks she also deserves to die.
    Truly the small details in this movie that make it such a masterpiece.

    Margot's ending is ambiguous on purpose. Her boat ran out of gas and her fate is left to the whim of the ocean. This fits well with the film's theme of mastery vs. anarchy/nature. Mastery has two dictionary meanings: 1) comprehensive knowledge or skill in a subject. 2) control or superiority over someone or something. The Chefs are guilty of the obsession with mastering their craft at the detriment of all else. The Elites are guilty of the obsession with their superiority over others. So, maybe in the end the film is saying that we really are masters of nothing and people should just "go with the flow" and enjoy a cheeseburger. Also, it's Dark Ratatouille. Slowik is Ego.
