Now I wish that Netflix would provide an audio option with Neil's commentary for every episode of the show.
If ever there was a time to make it a thing… this is it.
I HIGHLY recommend the audible production of The Sandman. All star cast with Neil Gaiman Narrating. Truly a great mental experience.
Just stick to Audible’s Sandman, which I predict will be found much more interesting.
I would SO watch an extended edition bts commentary reel with Neil! ...just in case the producers read thru comments of VF videos... 🤣

I remember Tilda Swinton as Gabriel in the movie Constantine, and Gwendolyn Christie has the same energy. Honestly a fantastic casting choice for Lucifer, she brings that same eerie sinister beauty.
This is the same reason why I’m fine with the casting.

I really hope the show does an episode on my favorite chapter, which was the man who made a bet with Dream on deciding he was going to live forever and every 100 years Dream would meet with him at the same bar. It was a really sweet story that Dream had a real friend.
Hob Gadling is included in this season.
That's being combined with "The Sound of her Wings" in episode 6.

Have to love British humor...it has those quirks can be hit or miss, but when it hits its a solid smack! Monty Python, Spitting Image, even Benny Hill has something for almost everyone.

As a writer myself it's extremely emotional to see a writer watching what he wrote come to life. I think that's the biggest dream come true. The Sandman looks awesome!
I'm not a writer but still I can tell how magical it would feel, it was the same with the Shadow and Bone director, seeing her walk into her mind and meet her imaginary friends, and then also with the creator or Heartstopper; being so involved in the shooting.
I was thinking that too! You can see how much passion he still holds for the story and how much this means to him.
Every artists dream to see things they create grow beyond them and everyone love them so much that they handle them with care and consideration in the growing.
He's not watching it come to life, he's making it come to life, he directed the show

I love the shot when Death is taking the baby away to the next place, and as Morphius and Death are walking out of the room, Death holding the metaphysical aspect of the baby, and in the background you see the shadow of leathery wings taking off. It is such a beautiful shot.

When I realized she was going to take a baby, it took my breath for a moment. So terrible, so sad. And yet you can't blame her. That's what life is like. I like that the series had no sugarcoating.
You know, it’s really nice when comic book writers actually get to write movies based on the comics they make. Because it actually ensures the final product follows the source material. Unlike most “comic book movies”

He's running the show, so I think we're in for a treat - especially if Good Omens is any indication
OF COURSE he does. Netflix paid him millions to do whatever they want to his stories. And made him sign an NDA. He sold out, but let's face it, you'd sell out too if you were offered millions.
He has such a relaxing voice. Listening to him is like wrapping a nice thick blanket around yourself in the middle winter while there's a fire burning in the fireplace and there's a kettle just starting to whistle for a nice cup of tea.
Hearing him read one of his stories to you in person is an incredible experience. Go see him live if you possibly can.
I love to listen to Neil's audiobooks where he is reading. It really is so soothing, even when the stories get dark and heavy at times.

God. I love British sarcasm. It is truly an art. If you ever need an example of it. Look know further than Neil Gaiman. I saw him give a lecture on a book tour for Norse Mythology and he was a delight.
you can tell he is passionate and excited about the show. and the fact that even the cast are fans of the comics and neil defends them on Twitter represents how much he and the cast have so much faith on the sandman show

I can listen to Neil talk all day. His voice is therapeutic.
My first introduction to Sandman was fairly recent through the audiobooks, which Neil narrates. After the first chapter I said "who is this narrator, his voice and pace is very soothing". When I looked it up and realized it was the author I was really happy and started checking out all his other works.
Wow. What a great way to be introduced to Neil. I started reading Sandman fairly recently too, and I've loved everything this man has written thus far.

I can’t listen to any of the audiobooks of his he narrates because his voice is so relaxing that I fall asleep.
crazy factoid: audiobooks of his released for the UK don't have him reading because his accent has elided so much since living primarily in America. Good friend of his, Dawn French typically does them.
Neil Gaiman is the kind of writer where gender-swaps or anything like that doesn't really matter. Because it's all about who can portray the character. I think casting nailed this 100% without me seeing this, yet. Fantastic cast.
And the fact Neil is not only involved but so passionate makes me see that this show is something he's proud of. That is why I'm so excited to see it!

It does matter. He hasn't just swapped genders for no reason or to be 'dIvErSe.'
He clearly explained why he made these decisions and has gone through a meticulous thought process on why these swaps are necessary to the story he wants to tell.
@@MrFox101 I guess my wording was taken incorrectly. What I mean is gender is unimportant in the context of his characters. The character matters. So Neil doesn't care if the actor is male or female, he cares more if somebody can bring that character to life with the same energy or mannerisms that he envisioned. In the end, I'm just saying he's doing the right thing for the right reasons.
I love how he points out the characters here are real and their actor counterparts are just roles thy inhabit when not doing this.

They absolutely NAILED the casting of Morpheus. Tom Sturridge really does look like him.
And here I thought the Audible audio drama was the best possible adaptation we were ever going to get. I'm so excited to see the brilliance of the comic's story shine with a modern polish -- and most importantly with Neil Gaiman's involvement and approval! 🥰 This series had a reputation of being "unadaptable" for *years* and now here we are with something that feels faithful but isn't limited by being 100% identical to the comics.
Even with the show I still want the audiobook series to continue. I love those things 😭

@@dejay9995 Part 3 to the Audible series is coming soon. I saw that at Comic Con on a sign by the Sandman sand structure. It advertised the first two parts by Audible. Yay!
Sometimes it's all about the timing.
I love that they are keeping the comic as the "skeleton" of the series, but allowing it to organically flesh out instead of constraining itself. It reminds me of The Boys, where the creators are allowing the series to grow and creating entertaining and gripping storylines.
So far, episode 6 is my favourite. I loved how they portrayed Death and it was nice to see Dream interacting with his sibling in a positive way.
This was the first "mature" western comic I ever read. Picked up volume 10 at the library, not realizing it was part of a series, when I was 13. Very confused, but totally immersed. I've read it many times since, and have been enjoying the audible radio drama.
Likewise. I discovered the series at about 14 and I can honestly say it was one of the more formative pieces of literature I read. I am soooo excited for this.

Same thing happened to me. I'd never read a comic before, but a friend told me about them and then I read them all out of order based on what my local library could get in.

I started reading superhero comics in the seventies. I first found Dave Sim's Cerebus the Aardvark in the early 80s, then Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, and that led me to Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Three of my favorite comic series of all time.
Poorly.
I've spent years saying they should never adapt this cause they could never do the comics justice, but holy heck I can't wait to see this and be proven wrong.
(btw for any Sandman fans, the Audible audiobooks are excellent)

They're INCREDIBLE!! The casting for everyone is just brilliant - James McAvoy as Dream, Michael Sheen as Lucifer, Kat Dennings as Death! - but it truly excels as an adaptation because of the sound design and the clever translation of narration into monologue.
Neil said the same thing for years. If he apprived of this then I trust it’s going to be fantastic

It does feel very Desire for that actor to slide in Neil Gaiman's dm's to ask where they can get in contact with the casting director

The creator himself greenlit and navigated this, not sure how "fans" still think they know better than the man who made it . . .
James Cameron overlooked Terminator Dark Fate. Riddley Scott actually directed Alien: Covenant. Loved franchises being destroyed left and right so people rightfully have doubts even when the original creator is involved. Maybe even more so now. Especially considering some questionable choises made for this adaptation.

My tip, listen to the audiobook on audible. Its beautiful and soooo good and Neil narrates it.
You gotta get your hands on them books. Volume 1 doesn't really give too much, it's toying with its roots in kitchy superhero comics of the 20th century and pulp horror comics... But it gets glorious as it jumps metanarratives in later books. Definitely worth setting aside some time to get lost in them a bit.
Looking at how Mr. Gaiman explaining every shot enthusiatically, I can't wait to watch the series and experience the world that he created being adapted to screen
I love that Neil is heavily involved and loving it which gives me hope that if nothing else it’s true to his vision. If it doesn’t end up being very good that just means it’s probably a story impossible to be adapted to live action in the first place. But I’m stoked for this due to his involvement

Neil Gaiman has over the years become more and more friendly.
My mother gifted me the sandman box set when I was in the 8th grade a little over a decade ago (considering some of the themes and imagery, maybe a bad move). I fell in love with them immediately and make a point of rereading them whenever I get the urge. This adaptation looks incredible and I hope they get to make the entire story.

I read Issue No. 6 “24 hours“ almost 5 years ago and still have not recovered! One of the darkest things he’s written? No kidding!
I'm really excited for this series, but I'm dreading this episode...
I had forgotten until he pointed it out and I did one of those "Oh?...Oh!... OOOhh deary oh no!" Reactions as I recalled.
24 Hours is going to traumatize a lot of people, can't wait for the reactions lol
"24 Hours" is still a hard read for me, even 20 years later, but I appreciate that in the comics, most of the really awful stuff happens juuuuust off panel. You don't *see* teeth ripping out throats you don't *see* all of the horrible things, you *almost* see them, which lets your mind fill in the blanks. I hope that's how he went with it here too, you don't need to see every gory detail for it to be horrific.
@@AliciaRainbow Which is something a lot of horror games/movies don't get. What's scary is not what you see, it's what you imagine. Some games in particular did it very well (Alien : Isolation comes to mind, also Amnesia : The Dark Descent). The rule I'm most familiar with is : the longer you stare at a *thing*, the less scary said *thing* becomes. It's not about what you actually hear, it's about what you think you just heard.
In this particular case, all the psychological horror around each of the persons. You don't see the worst parts, but you see the setup, which is more than enough to make you fill in the blanks. It's probably the one most disturbing thing I've ever read for that very reason.
I like the look of it and even if it doesn't measure I really admire that Neil has at least gotten an adaptation made that is willing to go back and forth between the whimsical and dark stuff.
I love how Death is not a menacing being but actually greets us like an old friend. And Lucifer just drips with venom and malice while having such a sweet demeanor.
Neil's voice is so perfect for story telling. NEIL is a perfect story creator. I cannot wait to watch this show!

I know they were filming the second season as of a few months ago, but having a Neil blink and you miss it cameo would be lovely, especially when we got to see Terry's iconic fedora in the background of Aziraphale's bookshop

The Sandman was the first comic book series that I ever became fully invested into. I bought the comic book issue 1 maybe a week before Issue 2 was released and then got every issue, and every collection, and the Sandman inspired hardback book, and a great poster of him with Death, and then of course the Death series. Just changed how I looked at comics books and myths. I met Mr Gaiman and some of the artists at a Comic Con and it was awesome to meet the man behind this incredible series. Could not be more excited for any piece of media ever.

When I was in high school, I was visually confused between Lucienne and Cain. So I appreciate the effort to distinguish between them, at least.

Ugh the dreams changing was great, i never thought they'd be able to create cgi that was good enough and there's so much background exposition that gets conveyed that i didn't expect to see done so well
I like his Idea of death being that person who will accompany you... My heart
The character of Desire gives off "Lady Gaga dialed up to 1,000" vibes in the quick glimpse that we see, and that makes a LOT of sense for how the Lady Gaga persona was portrayed when she first became popular.
And then the actor has a voice like honey, which also makes a lot of sense for Desire.

It's so odd to see this on the screen, it deserves to be seen through Neil's vision, I just never thought the comic I enjoyed in relative solitude would break out. I'm pessimistic on what cinema has done to the stories of my youth. This actually excites me. Thanks Neil!
I remember in the beginning of his graphic novel series that Neil Gaiman admitted that Sandman kind of resembled him as a young man; I loved that reference so much and for me it sort of added to my enjoyment of the books. So I admit that when this new series was introduced that I crossed my fingers in hopes that they would find a good actor who could bring that hidden quality of both resemblance and personality to the screen. I believe with Tom that they've succeeded; I so look forward to enjoying this new version of the same journey. Bravo!
Boyd Holbrook was fantastic casting. He brought the Corinthian to life in a way i didn't think possible. The series was fantastic.

I was revisiting the first audiobook the other day, and it's such excellent evergreen listening in the same way that the comics are always a good read. I'm so tickled by what tweaks are made to best suit whatever medium - the way the narration and foley effects paint a panel in the mind's eye just delights me so, so much. can't wait for the series! :)
I’ve always loved the musical/musician visual references in the characters.
Morpheus always reminded me of a mix of Robert Smith and Peter Murphy. Death reminded me of a cross between Siouxsie Sioux and Patricia Morrison. Lucifer reminded me of David Bowie.
Neil truly gets it. The art of portrayal... He doesn't care about gender, but the actor's ability to be believable. YESSS 🔥
Episode 5 was so wonderful, it felt exactly like Neil's writing. The way he talks about how his ideas have come to life... there's just so much love there.
This gentleman is a genius. I hope this is just the first of many adaptations. There’s plenty of material for a ‘Sandman Cinematic Universe.’

Gwendolyn Christie played an amazing Lucifer. Somehow both polite but also taunting. They flash such a lovely and beautiful smile, but you can just FEEL the layers of deception just by looking at Christie's face. Great performance!

I was so taken by the recent audio version of Sandman that as much as Gaiman is involved in this, I still can't quite buy that this series will be better...not saying it can't be (I hope it is!), but the casting and performances of the Audible version were just soooooo good! I am so happy we are getting the John Dee story. Dr Destiny is an under appreciated lesser known Justice League villain and his Sandman story is the best Dr Destiny story. I always hoped that if there ever was a Justice League Dark movie it would partially adapt that story.
under appreciated??? nooo. I recall a very interesting story the "4th Parallel" in JLA Classified. Very clever story. Of course there are a bunch of times he was in silver age comics.
You can just tell Neil is a Dad™with the smooth way he delves into silly/joking territory but still keeps the same conversation going as if he's not. XD

The Sandman was a huge part of my formative years. It inspired me to be an artist myself.
In college, I'd buy Sandman comics instead of food. Worth it.
I am SO EXCITED!! I know it sounds ridiculous but I need this show to be a success. At the very least the people involved need to be appreciated because we need several seasons! The whole world they created looks eerie and dreamlike (haha) and I have goosebumps!

I’m so excited about this. Sandman is a beautiful art piece, that really is so emotional at times. 😃 Thanks Neil for bringing my favorite comic book to life.

I was sold on this show because of how connected Gaiman is
Desire and Despair were the first graphic novel and comic character I was ever fascinated with outside of manga and anime. Desire casted and presented gives the same vibes as I always hoped They would be.
I am not sold yet. I really looking forward to watch that episode. I really wonder who they will portait Delirium in the future
@@user-qo4pd7ie2c it was interesting seeing John Dee's portrayal as a straightforward human compared to the skeletor looking portrayal in the comics. Same kind of thing for Despair in this presentation, she looks standard human not like a goblin beast. I've got to see more of her to see if she embodies the feeling, but so far they didn't do a visual effects thing.
Honestly if anything I think Sandman justifies gender swaps or race swaps or whatever cause it's literally a series about stories, and specifically the different versions of stories, where in some Dream is an African man (actually kinda curious what they are gonna do for this one in the series), or a cat, or what have you. This is just a different telling of the story, and what really matters is the core of the character more than the surface details
Well said. As long as the actor nails the characters personality(and Neil says they do) it doesn't matter what they look like. Still cannot believe these inverted-jawline folks care that much about the skin color of the Endless.
You might have seen it since then, but they do have a separate cast for Kai'Ckul in the Nada arc!
