I met her very briefly once. It was in 1977 when I was on a trip with my school. I was then 15 years old and could only understand a few words of English (I'm French). We were on the steps going up to St. Paul's Cathedral when someone came out making big gestures and closing the door to the public. There were about twenty of us on the steps when two huge cars stopped in front of the cathedral. An old lady got out of one car and 2 other people got out of the other car. The old lady was in front and went towards the front door. As I was almost in her way, she came to shake my hand with an incredible smile and say 2 or 3 words to me. Then she entered the cathedral. I knew from my teacher that she was the Queen Mother and that's when my legs started shaking :D She was just adorable.
I remember seeing Princess Diana when she came to Australia in the early 80s to support the bushfire recovery. I was in the crowd and she drove past smiling ill never forget her

The Queen Mother seemed like she loved & supported her husband so, so much. He was so lucky to have her as his partner! What comfort she must've brought him!
I feel like the fact that King George, or Bertie, had such a fear of public speaking endeared him more to the people, because it shows he is just as human as the rest of us.
Elizabeth and Margaret had a ok younger life, but Bertie, David and their siblings had a life of abuse. Prince Phillip’s life was sad and so was Charles. I guess things are better today, but not so fifty years ago.
@@shirleydrake1602 lol horrible? Pampered in the lap of luxury? I'm going to say W&H were spoiled to some extent. Sheltered, pampered into forced naivety. I've read books about starving children resorting to cannibalism, children forced into prostitution by their parents or their fellow urchins, children growing up in concentration camps - now those were horrible childhoods, Lady Granthamcrackers.
King George made me smile when he was having fun with a group of people and they did hand gestures and he had a huge smile and he kept looking at his wife. He really adored her and even though he always looked stoic, his wife always brought that smile on his face. This is a lovely side of the royalty.
She rather ruled the roost, I've read. Steel hand in a velvet glove... She battled Philip for power and bossed Elizabeth around. She had been co-regent with her husband and didn't adjust well when Elizabeth ascended. Wouldn't move out of Buckingham Palace for the longest time.
What’s so remarkable about this woman who lived lavishly until the end, like there was no tomorrow. She spent millions of taxpayers money on clothing and other superficial rubbish. When she died, she left with millions in debt. Besides she was apparently extremely vindictive and nasty, especially toward princess Diana and making her country home available to Charles and Camilla. Who with a trace of decency, would do that ?
@@neytiriavatar140 couldn't agree more, a completely selfish utterly vain woman, but there's another world { after this } that isn't impressed with royalty from down here.
I really enjoy hearing stories from those Queens of the past. Victoria, Mary, and Queen Mother. They were alive not that long ago, and yet those times also sound so distant in the mist of time.
I agree. I also enjoy hearing the stories about the Queens of the past: Victoria, Mary and the Queen Mother. Each left their own marks on their time as queen. This is a delightful history lesson.
Queen mother was born on the 4th August and 50 years later i was born on the same date, on her 100th Birthday i sent to her a Birthday card and was really surprised that her Lady in Waiting sent me a letter with the Queen Mum wishing me a Happy Birthday on my 50th Birthday i tresure that letter how nice! (Actually one of my Uncles before WW2 was a photographer of the Royalty and he left me some photos in his Will and i sent those Photos to the Queen Mum on her Birthday she was very thankful for them).

I vaguely remember when she died but had no idea who she really was. It wasnt until i watched the Kings Speech that i started to realise that without her Queen Elizabeth may not have been my queen today. That she was the strength behind the crown.
It’s weird to think she was born when almost absolutely everyone in the world was born in the 1800s, and she died when there were about 5 of them left.
What an awesome history for the R.F. i loved watching the Queen Mother she being a beautiful, gracious, and supportive dignified reigning Queen wife to her husband King Bertie and mother to Queen Elizabeth 11 and Margaret. Thank you for sharing this historic film of the huge war and effort for all those countries that were involved. It makes the "Rememberance Day" very meaningful. ❤
Through all of the Queen Mother qualities, I think her devotion to her husband as his rock is what make her stand out from most royal marriages. That was a couple who had genuine love and happiness between each other, sad that through her extremely long life she couldn't spend more of it with her Bertie.
Equally devoted to her hats and all things she could spend money on without a thought. Apart of this, she was a very warm person who gave a lot of love to her family.
There are remarkable outcomes from all modern monarchies...but the one strongest trait of the British throne....between Elizabeth and her parents....first and foremost they were what love stories were made of. May God Bless us all and help us to heal this hate-filled world and help to return us to a time... where true love and peace were our guiding lights. May Heaven help all of us to end this terrible violence and hate that are spreading like poison around the globe. In the name of our Savior Jesus Christ ... Please Lord, help us all.
I have watched this documentary many times. However, upon this viewing, I am so pleased to see the beaming Prince Philip walking his sister-in-law down the aisle. What a wonderful unit this family exhibited. Beautiful. That gesture exemplifies attainable royalty, in my opinion: i.e., a united family IS royalty. ❤
Best royal documentary I have ever seen! A great collection of stories and history and beautifully put together. Definitely saving this one to watch on repeat. Thank you so much for making this ❤🙏👏
I love her private home, Castle of Mey in Caithness. It's full of family stuff , not grand and a real feeling of 'her home'. Her gardens are informal , and full of colour. Her love of farming where her Angus cattle are still bred.
Prince Charles opened a B & B on the grounds of the Castle of Mey last year, Jude Linsell. It`s called The Granary Lodge and has only 10 bedrooms. It looks exquisite.
@@lesleymcshanemitchell9651 Yes it was almost a ruin, she did manage to save the house, but it was a rather foolish waste of money, costing far more in repairs than the property was actually worth.still ,apparantly she looked after its staff very well ,when she died, cant remember the terms, but its some sort of trust now

The Queen Mum's dress was seen as old-fashioned and frumpy back in 1923. It was not long before she found herself a new designer (it was Wallis who made fun of her awful dress sense that alerted her to her hopelessly poor taste).
@Nenethegreat W I'm still young to be married and yet I agree. "Vintage" wedding dresses look more elegant and beautiful. I appreciate the new designs for they speak of the modern times we live in today but in my opinion, they don't have that elegance and aesthetic of wedding dresses from 1920's.
The queen mother was born a year earlier than my paternal grandmother. When I hear about her life story it gives me a frame of reference for my grandmother's life: WWI as teens, the Spanish Flu, being in their 20's during the roaring 20's, the Great Depression as young mothers, WWII, etc. Fascinating history.
"who became the first royal to divorce." The Church of England is based on a King trying to get divorced. Henry 8 was divorced twice. That is what is so bizarre about the Royal Family. The current family exist only because of a divorce.
No, henry VIII had annulments. George I was divorced. There was no issue with divorce per se, it was remarriage after divorce that was considered impossible.
The current family are reigning because Princess Charlotte (daughter of George IV) died in childbirth. Had she not died, Queen Victoria would likely never have even been born because, without Charlotte's death, there wouldn't have been a scramble to produce an heir to follow William IV.
Our family revered George VI and Queen Elizabeth for setting an example of calmness and comfort to the population devastated by the bombings during WWII. The right man ascended the throne.
I agree with you. The right man ascended the throne. George VI and Queen Elizabeth had a way to set that example (something that David could never do) of calmness & comfort to the population of the UK during those awful bombings during WWII.
I loved Queen Mother saying after Buckingham Palace was bombed, "Im glad we've been bombed because now we can look at the East end in the face"..a part of Britain devastated by bombing during WW2
Yes a Queen Wallis would have been a tad disconcerting and Edward was such a pathetic specimen it would have definitely been Queen Wallis pulling. God I’m shuddering.
I am so fascinated by the British Royalty traditions. Most of the Royal Family women were and are so strong , each in their own ways, beautifully bound to family and duty to their country. According to my genealogy, my fifth great grandmother was the first Duchess / Princess of Sussex. As an American , and now the matriarch of my family, I hope I live the long life as these women. My heart goes out to the Queen on the loss of her husband, as I too lost mine at only 53 years. God bless her.
the wives of Prince Augustus Frederick were daughters of Earls, they weren't Princesses they weren't Duchesses of Sussex either, both times the marriages contravened the royal marriages act 1772 so they could not have the courtesy titles
@@chomama1628 as an adult I understand that now... but I'm younger than both William and Harry, so without a documentary about her life I would never have been able to appreciate her.
I remember it being quoted in 2 different books where the QM was being outfitted for white ostrich feathers from Paris to adorn one her hats. When it was mentioned to her that one ostrich feather would feed an unemployed miners family for a year, (this was back in the 1930's) the QM simply replied, and I'll take them in blue also. She was a true monarch. Shaped by the high principles and ethics and selflessness they were taught as children. They were so noble. Today we give up on people so easily. Marriages have no commitment. That is why we are all falling apart. Mental health is such a problem. Sad world indeed.
This was a delightful recount of history. As some of the royals fit like a gloves some that shouldn't be in charge. The QueenMother is a portrait of quite leadership. She was the wind behind his sails even after his death ,it is a tribute how she raised her daughter to fill the role as Queen of England. Such a fulfilled life. RIP Queen mother along with her son in law Prince Philip Mountbatten.
How enchanting in the life of the Queen Mother. The role she took on to help George Vl with the enormous responsibly of Kng which he had never been trained and to cope with his impediment. Her love for the Queen and Princess Margaret. Her love of fashion and her Signature Hats and Horses. She was loved by the people because the King and.herself stayed in London during the Second World ll She begun the moderation of the Royal Family that we see today..
Agreed. Personally I tend to like her teenage looks rather than the short 1920's haircuts of her young adult hood and later life. Perhaps that is because of my modern tastes.
What’s amazing is how passionate, how invested in the topic you all are. I’d love to see an age survey. However, from the content and knowledge(or lack of) shown, I’d guess most commenters are young, definitely under 30, many under 20, and I’d also guess a lot are American, and that very few are British. So you can’t say the British Royal Family aren’t relevant. To inspire such passionate discussion in people who will never meet them, who have watched a 100 minutes about a lady whom many have trouble placing in history, whether or not the comments are favourable, means they are still relevant in some way. I suppose it explains the massive tourist value which Royal supporters say the Royal family have for England.
Are you taking issue with young Americans finding such stories of state funded elitism fascinating? I always tell people that the queen may sit on a golden throne, but she still has to wipe her ass like anyone else. Although, she most likely enjoys a good stiff bide followed by a regimen including Masenguil Disposable Wipes. Out the door with purse in hand, clean as a whistle.
While watching, it amazes me how close Great Britain & the US were and still are to this day. Other countries who have fought blood wars could learn from our two countries. We hated each other before & during the Revolutionary War, even after. But learned to get over that crap & work together/respect each other
And see how she’s so gracious to those who serve her just looking in the eyes of a man closing the door of her cab for her most people don’t do that. Some people won’t even greet their Uber driver

@@lifesthehardestgame6863 "blue blood" is an expression that originally comes from the Iberian Peninsula during the century long moorish occupation ! The moors came from North Africa and were mainly "mulattos", or even black whereby the natives of the Iberian Peninsula were Europeans and light skinned, so that the visible veins beneath the skin appeared blue! So "blue blood" originally meant "native" and "christian", regardless of one´s social position

This was quite interesting. I was never interested in the royal family before. I now have some understanding of the significance of English royalty as an American.
I find it fasinating how throughout Royal history the path of the crown has taken such divergent paths from what would have been originally expected. The crown has sat on many heads that were completely unexpected. In reality, Queen Elizabeth would be not be monarch if even the slightest difference happened during the past 1000 years. The stars pretty much had to align perfectly or we would see a very different royal family. I find it fasinsating how things like that happen.

The Princess Alexandra is a wonderfully kind lady with a wonderful memory for recognition and like all the Royals, she doesn't see the difference between theperso she is introduced to on a formal society evening and the "rough-neck' in his working togs the following week. Once she's met the person it is like it has been imprinted.
Thank God in Heaven Edward VIII abdicated making George VI & Elisabeth King & Queen! If not and Edward stayed, all of Great Britain would be speaking German today! I’ve always thought that the marriage of the Queen mother and the King was a testament to how love can support and lift us to become more than we ever thought we could be. They seemed to bring out the best of each other, but then the Queen mother did that for so many throughout her life. I truly believe that she was the reason for whatever happiness the King was able to find in his life. She was such a wonderfully caring woman, with a very big heart. I have no doubt she did the same for her daughter the Queen when she was forced into her crown so unexpectedly, despite being completely grief-stricken - it’s very well known how much Queen Elizabeth depended on her mother those first years, and I was deeply saddened when the Queen mother passed away. She was always my favourite of all the Royals - she wasn’t at ALL politically correct in private, lol, but then it’s impossible to compare her using today’s standards. She was incredibly politically astute, and I’m sure the royal PR team must have absolutely adored her. I’ve often found it a bit odd that more wasn’t made out of the fact that that horrible woman, Simpson, and Edward were actually nazi sympathizers. (She was truly an absolutely beastly woman 😠).

My beloved Scottish maternal grand-mother simply adored the Queen Mum. I hope they're enjoying an afternoon tea together and chatting away, each on their fluffy cloud in Heaven!
The Queen Mum instinctively knew the value of gratitude and a smile. Daughter Liz and grandson Charlie appear to have grey clouds always hovering near by.
It's just a thought but maybe it's because the Queen mum was a queen consort, rather than the actual monarch? There's less weight on a consort's shoulders. I also think that when Elizabeth II unexpectedly became queen at a very young age, it was in an era that was still very much a man's world, and, if memory serves, Churchill referred to her as a 'slip of a girl'. Maybe she felt that, to take on the role and prove herself, she had to maintain a serious outlook. You can imagine how she would have been received if she'd been seen nationally as a 'slip of a girl'.
@@pennylando3145 -- Excellent perspective! These are plausible explanations for QE2's manner, which often strikes me as disdainful, stern and gloomy. Back them when she married Bertie she wasn’t expecting to become Queen because it was her brother-in-law David who was the heir to the throne she was destined to be the Duchess of York. It was when Davis abdicated that her life changed dramatically she was no longer the duchess of York as the new kings wife and was the Queen of England. Elizabeth hated David because Bertie had no training to become king because he was simply not destined to be King but once David abdicated it put immense pressure on Bertie to step up as the King witch affected his health later in life. Even there mother Queen Mary blamed David. It’s ironic that in present day Harry is in a similar position to what his great great uncle David was in

Alcohol kills the brain cells. The Queen Mother's brain was exceptional right into her old age. She died at 101. Surely she was allowed to be discerning about people.
Well the Queen inherited that turn your head to the otherside when faced with a problem kinda attitude from her care free mother, which didnt help at all in any of her childrens personal problems in their own families
Queen Mum seemed more interfering by far than QE2. Margaret's relationship, trying to keep Mountbatten out of their family, trying to chivvy Phillip off, pushing a Spencer girl on Charles, and then hosting him and his mistress at her house.
I am extremely happy that Edward abdicated, the thought of what might have happened, regarding the war and his liking for Hitler and the nazis, if he’d been king, is not a good thought!
I shutter to think what the UK would be like if Edward had not abdicated especially with his liking for Hitler and the Nazis. Would he have betrayed the UK to Hitler? probably. Thank goodness he abdicated and the right man ascended the throne in the form of George VI.
Thank you for this delightful history lesson. I think it would be easy for modern people to be jealous of the Queen Mother who had a delightful life. I enjoyed catching up with the history of Royal Family members of whom little is shown nowadays. I love the Monarchy and all the connections and continuity with the history of Great Britain. I think a lot of people take it for granted and do not know what a blessing it is. It belongs to the Nation, and it does not depend on personality so much as an appreciation of History.

@Kandy Kandy The Queen's House of Windsor is of German paternal descent and was originally a branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This derived from the House of Wetin, which succeeded the House of Hanover to the British monarchy following the death of Queen Victoria, the wife of Albert, Prince Consort. Educate yourself and ease up on the caps , it just confirms you are emotionally driven and not too bright . She sympathised with Hitler and approach the British parliament about it . @Nenethegreat W There are great haters out here - pay no attention to them. They have always been around and always will be. The queen mother wouldn't let them get her down. I try to adopt her example.
I never knew Princess Diana and The Queen mother didn't get along. These two are my two favourites royals who are now both passed on. Both women were very special. May they RIP.
As I understood it QM was supposed to "educate" Diana into the do's and don'ts of royal life before the marriage. However when it became obvious that Diana was more "popular" than QM and she refused to cover up "big ears's" infadelity the QM changed attitudes because of the adverse publicity Diana's actions brought on.
After the King died, the Queen Mother didn't want to give up her power. She distrusted and sabatoged the late Prince Phillip at every opportunity! Even to the point of hurting the relationship between Phillip and Charles. Princess Diana did not care for her at all and she allowed Camilla and Charles to use her residence as a "love nest." Still, she was a good Queen and was a tremendous asset, especially during WW2. Like all of us, there are good/bad things about them. Truly one of the last "great ladies."
It's sad to hear about Prince George's death. Bisexuality might not have been a term widely used back then, if at all, but it seems that is what he was, and his wife understood that and loved him. David and Wallis didn't deserve the throne, but they deserved each other. Bertie and Elizabeth were definitely the right people for the job, even if they hadn't been prepared for it. They seemed like a classic introvert/extrovert mix, and complemented each other well.

King Charles always was by her side escorting her. He was a good grandson and she was crazy about his sons too.
George VI was a hero for stepping up to be King even though he felt unprepared for the job and forced into it by his brother.
Would have been hilarious if he'd said no. Talk abt a constitutional crises.
Poor thing cried on his mother’s shoulders!

Im sorry but he should of been prepared well before. He wasn't married , childless and hated the crown.
Yes, King George was a good man, and now there is a divorced couple sitting as king and queen . How times and people change.
I feel like the fact that King George, or Bertie, had such a fear of public speaking endeared him more to the people, because it shows he is just as human as the rest of us.
He had a speech impediment. It’s in the movie the King Speech
If it was a secret that wasnt known to the public, how exactly did something secret garner public sympathy?
Those children had a horrible life. There didn’t seem to be a single bright spot until Diana came into the family.
Elizabeth and Margaret had a ok younger life, but Bertie, David and their siblings had a life of abuse. Prince Phillip’s life was sad and so was Charles. I guess things are better today, but not so fifty years ago.

King George made me smile when he was having fun with a group of people and they did hand gestures and he had a huge smile and he kept looking at his wife. He really adored her and even though he always looked stoic, his wife always brought that smile on his face. This is a lovely side of the royalty.

I agree. I also enjoy hearing the stories about the Queens of the past: Victoria, Mary and the Queen Mother. Each left their own marks on their time as queen. This is a delightful history lesson.

I love the 1920s fashion and the art deco vibe . I think her wedding dress was sublimely magnificent and so modern fot that period of time .

Thats like saying if William and Mary had a child then the UK and the Netherlands would be the same country.

"blue blood" is an expression that originally comes from the Iberian Peninsula during the century long moorish occupation ! The moors came from North Africa and were mainly "mulattos", or even black whereby the natives of the Iberian Peninsula were Europeans and light skinned, so that the visible veins beneath the skin appeared blue!

What is your hope of them being in heaven based on?

What a perfectly choreographed life
The Queen had some very strong women around her. I love learning about The Queen and her family's history.
The Queen Mum instinctively knew the value of gratitude and a smile. Daughter Liz and grandson Charlie appear to have grey clouds always hovering near by.
What can you expect with the problems their family are causing
Hi Albert how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health.
So the dour persona may have been the instinctive shield of a frightened young girl, and evolved into her concept of how a mature, serious, intelligent woman behaves when the eyes of the world are upon her.

I bet she would have hated Megan Markle, she reminds of Wallis Simpson.
When she bypassed Wallis & went straight to The King that was correct protocol! When the king is present he's the 1st to be "noted" THEN comes the host/hostess. So I hope everyone in attendance bowed to King FIRST then to "Mrs Simpson"
She was so lovely. 💐 Always smiling with a genuine joy.
Princess Charlotte looks amazingly like queen Elizabeth it’s uncanny how much she looks like her great grandmother and she is growing up into a beautiful Princess 👸 - it’s so nice

I love the movie The Kings Speech! Edward has a stutter also. Their father sure did a number on those kids.

@@khernandez46 yes, and the people who helped him deal with it.

Queen Elizabeth II was such an adorable little girl.
She was a True Lady, with grace, style, and poise. Loving to her family, bravely touring the city's after bombing raids, and helping to raise British People's moral during those incredible bad times. That alone took courage.
Spot on she was a wonderful person, many were interviewed when she died, ordinary people, all spoke well of her,its easy to spread false rumours when a person is dead, and mist if those who knew her gone as well, The Queen who had never put a foot wrong, was devoted to her mother, she is good judge of people, knew how indispensable she was to our King ,for that alonesheshould be honoured ,her memory not abused
Her brother in law King/Prince Edward asked Hitler to bring London to its knees 😢

Hello it’s me William Wales how are you
Ive read she was a functioning alcoholic who was a remnant of the Edwardian age/ incredibly classist. I have also read she was ...not always very nice to people whom she just did not take to. Sounds just like my grammy.
Do we have the same grammy? :)
She said herself that she wasn't really a very nice person. She was a snob and a racist!
Although she often drank I'd hardly call that a being an alcoholic. I doubt she ever ended up passing out from drinking, and by the time she died she'd lived through a massive change in society, you can hardly blame her for seeming a bit old fashioned
Alcohol kills the brain cells. The Queen Mother's brain was exceptional right into her old age. She died at 101. Surely she was allowed to be discerning about people.
never have any time for pampered individuals who never did days work in their lives!

@@valeriebehrendt9380 She was incredibly elitist. Don't be sucked in by that sickly-sweet smile. Awful woman!
The whole family was / is sympathetic to those lines of thought

The beloved Queen Mother.
22 years today. And like this year, an Easter Saturday too. We miss her presence..
Get a life-the royals couldn’t care less about you.
Thank you for your positive remarks . You are quite right an appreciation of history and respect that is being lost on some of the younger generation
@Kandy Kandy He thanked someone for a positive message. How is it that you find fault with that
BLUE BIRD .... you have to remember there are 3 other countries ! England gets everything ! And the rest are red hair stepchilds ! Not everyone is a Royalist ! I didn’t care for any of them ! But personally think the QM was not very nice!! I met her once and was not impressed!
She really wasn’t nice to Dianna, when Dianna lived with her before wedding ! QM was coaching or training her for her future duties ??
Most people who live there could care less about the pomp and circumstance !! Wasn’t that long ago that there was an uproar about none of the Royals paying taxes! They do now !!
William and Catherine will bring a newer younger generation as I think they are well liked ! And their children are adorable !
Maybe some didn't like her racism , cheap opportunism and classism . Children think in terms of jealousy .I hate the monarchy and what it did to my ancestors . Was it her feeling about Jews that impresses you ? Or how she deemed black people , Japanese or anything non white ? Was it her sympathy for Hitler that you admired ? I count my blessing that my family survived British tyranny , greed and blood lust . The sun has set on the British empire . Thank God !
It is all documented .
This was such a delightful video! I am such a fan of both Queens.

I never knew Princess Diana and The Queen mother didn't get along. These two are my two favourites royals who are now both passed on. Both women were very special. May they RIP.
Same I loved them both. RIP to them
Rest in peace Dodi al Fayed. 🕊
Well Diana was loved by the world 🌎, but never by her husband!!

Queen Mother! I love her! lol i didnt think anyone had a personality in that family this is amazing lol
Truth Inspector can
After the King died, the Queen Mother didn't want to give up her power.
Bisexuality is just straight, it’s a part of straight life, it’s normal.
@@jamessuchard-rees3039 If you think being bi is straight, dude, you might be bi 🤣🤣
Phoenix incorrect, if you think straight isn’t bi, then you are probably gay.
Phoenix for 99% of bisexuals, being bi is straight, almost all bisexuals are married with kids. There are thousands more bisexuals than there are gays. Gay is quite rare, all of the rest describe themselves as ‘straight’ and lets face it, unless you have dealt with your gay feelings you cannot possibly be straight.
Phoenix not at all, for example, I am straight bit I also fancy men, but no one knows, and I call myself straight like every other man, which is what I am. It’s up to me what I call myself, you miss the point. Bi is normal, it’s the same as straight.
