    This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Honda Odyssey minivan. The Honda Odyssey is one of the best driving mini-vans with an excellent turning radius, comfortable drive and it’s quite nimble for such a large vehicle. Whether you need the extra space for carpooling, a long road trip or home improvement items, the Odyssey doesn’t disappoint. This mini-van has a 3.5L V6 engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission, 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, FWD only. The Odyssey is an 8-passenger mini-van and comes standard with a black gloss grille, chrome door handles (black US), power sliding doors, a moonroof, LED headlights, fog lights and taillights, available two-tone 19” aluminum alloy wheels and a hands-free power tailgate. In the US, the power sliding doors are standard on the EX trim and the moonroof & power tailgate on the EX-L model. Keep in mind; the US has a much lower starting price for the Odyssey with more trims available compared to Canada so you will get less features on the lower trims. Some standard active safety features include, brake assist, auto high beam, a collision mitigation braking system, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, hill start assist ad rear seat reminder. The Odyssey comes with plenty of driver assist technology features including, adaptive cruise control, Honda Lane Watch and lane keep assist. Blind Spot Monitoring and rear-cross alert are standard on the top Touring trim in Canada and one up from the base model in the US on the EX trim.JD Power gives the 2022 Honda Odyssey an overall score of 80/100. How
    do the competitors fair? The Toyota Sienna gets a score of 79/100, the Chrysler Pacifica 68/100 and the Kia Carnival has not yet been rated. Lets take a look at the dimensions of these mini-vans and how they compare. The Odyssey offers the most length, the Carnival and Pacifica have the most front legroom, Odyssey wins for second row legroom at 40.9" with the Carnival very close at 40.5". The Sienna has the most third row legroom 38.7" with the Odyssey not far behind 38.1". The Carnival offers the most space behind the 3rd row at 40.2 cubic feet with the Odyssey in second with 38.6 cubic feet. The most overall cargo capacity goes to the Odyssey. For fuel economy, the Honda is not best in class; it gets 12.2L/100 km, 19 MPG city and 8.5L/100 km, 28 MPG highway.
    The Honda Odyssey starts at $48,305 CAD, EX-L Res $48,605 CAD and the Touring $54,805 CAD.
    In the US, it starts at $33,040 USD, EX $36,440 USD, EX-L $39,710 USD, Touring $43,750 USD and Elite $48,770 USD.

    Odyssey is the way to go, it’s proven reliability. It drives great with that 10 speed and that refined V6. The suspension and steering are better than any other van or crossover we test drove. We have an ‘18 Elite and and not a squeak or rattle in the years we’ve had it.

    Not a fan of the looks of this vehicle. The second row seats are too close to the floor. No height adjustment on the passenger seat is a no go. All minivans should be available with AWD. Toyota and Kia Sears are the most comfortable all the way around. Minivans are the way to go if you’re looking for a people hauler.
    List SUVs are not people haulers. They’re just tall cars. I’d also lie to see some performance trim vans. If we can have performance Pickup trucks and SUVs we can have performance vans.

  • @brianb7844

    We own a Pacifica and wouldn’t choose any other. We use the van specifically to carry our dogs. Stow n go is great, relatively flat floor makes carrying crate easy. Sienna is a big no with the inability to remove the middle seats. The Honda is ok, but removing the big seats and the floor is just not flat enough. Carnival would work but you can’t get the top trim with removable seats.

      Chrysler just has that understanding with the idea of it being a people mover and truck/SUV cargo hauler .. the "do all vehicle". Like everyone is saying ... the inexpensive Dodge van is no longer; sure they needed that longer warranty (or TSB allowed for good discounting on repairs) back then and were not designed to be cool (but gosh lots of kids ponder them as a first vehicle .. especially when cargo ones were around and a low price). At least they have the Grand Caravan variant in Canada; helps a tad on pricing for the original target market .. families with no money that needed high utility.

      Agreed. I currenlty own a Honda and my next purchase will likely be the pacifica because it's simply better. Honda relies too much on their brand name to sell (and it works) but I rented a Pacifica for a week and was sold! The Odyssey would be a downgrade imo

    They've come a long way since my 2001 Dodge Caravan (reg length and not the "Grand") We bought that for $19,999. I can't imagine trying to afford one of these as a young family today. I agree that nothing beats a minivan for families especially with pets too. Thanks for the review!

    • @JohnLassen-y4t
      @JohnLassen-y4t 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      19,999 in 2001 is about $37,000 adjusted for inflation which is inline with what a base minivan is today. A Carnival can be had for even less.

  • @Blank00
    @Blank00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The Sienna is the worst minivan. The unremovability of the 2nd row defeats the purpose of a minivan. If you like Toyota reliability, you may as well get a highlander, just as practical than the new Sienna despite less exterior footprint. Kia learned from their previous Sedona that they're better off making the 2nd row removable for the new Carnival.

    Sienna. Bc the odyssey still has transmission issues since 2012 and they have a timing belt instead of chain which requires replacement around 60-100k miles and costs $1500.
    Plus the sienna is AWD and gets 36 mpg.

      I completely agree. We have the new Sienna and love the mileage. I was concerned about going from our V6 Sienna to a hybrid with CVT, but it has been great. It has plenty of power in town and on the highway. Sure, there is a little more noise with the four cylinder, but it is totally worth it.

    If only pacifica has a toyota reliability - ill pick them anytime of the day . Honda is decent , however - this current generation has electronic gremlins ( specially the top trim models ) . With regards to current fuel prices plus proven reliability - ill pick sienna . Has its own issues like flimsy cheap plastics - its not well thought out design unlike odyssey and pacifica . But thing will outlast odyssey and specially pacifica . And yeah has a great mpg as well due to hybrid system.

    Just go to the wiki page for Honda Odyssey and search for Designer. You know right away the year they handed the design to a non-Japanese. Catalin Matei reinvented ugly in 2010 and Randall Smock put lipstick on the pig 2017. Honda, please, close all your North American design studios and pull design back to Japan. We buy your cars because they look Japanese.

    The longer wheel base makes for a smoother ride. The height of the cabin is great for a take-out windows or a bank ATM's. If your not really a camper you can haul your bike in the back and if you want to sleep in the back it's warmer and quieter than tenting. Any type of construction, you can haul stuff to the dump, ladders, paint, 7 passengers or 1000 kg. The sliding side doors are essential for a quick pickup of the crew. Just remember at night to put the liftgate down before driving into the garage.

      The thing that really bugs me about the Honda and Toyota vans is that after many years of development, they still can't make the seats fold down into the floor like the Chrysler and Dodge vans. This is such a convenient feature, and is one of the reasons the Caravan is the #1 selling van even though the Honda and Toyota ones are technically the "better overall" vans.

    I’m a Honda fan and have had 5 now. I echo the comments that quality has degraded over the years. Recently I had a 2018 CR-V and now a couple current gen Odyssey’s. As much as I would like to, it’s not an easy recommendation for the Odyssey in its current form. The first, new from the factory, had a significant number of defects ranging from cubbies that wouldn’t close, misaligned body panels and doors, and more major finish issues (cracked seals on both passenger and driver doors, paint chips, paint bubbles, metal showing through the paint and clear coated). The 2022 was better but some of the fit and finish issues continue to exist in addition to proximity keys not always working, high rate of distortion in passenger side mirrors and now a year in, the sunroof seems to be having trouble closing and one of the power window regulators have been replaced. Fit and finish appears to be better on the 2020’s. As a Honda fan, I’m disappointed in my experience with the product(s) as of late. On the other hand, the power train and handling is really good for a van (it’s surprisingly quick!), the seats are comfortable, and the utility factor is great (I’ve had those middle seats out more times than I can count). Perhaps the Odyssey is a good choice for specific reasons but maybe the other options are better all rounders.

    I always love Honda. I am currently own 2 previous generation Civic and they are brilliant cars. Even with HondaLink's issues with the Odyssey, it remains the one to beat in this ever diminishing segment. But Carnival has it beaten when it comes to exterior styling, interior ambience and infotainment's user friendliness. Sienna has a very efficient, if sluggish hybrid powertrain. I have driven JDM Odyssey with Honda's hybrid powertrain, its peppy given its narrower dimensions. If Honda wants the next USDM Odyssey to have a hybrid to compete with Sienna and Pacifica, it better be a V6 hybrid that focus on performance. Just like the Accord hybrid V6 from more a decade ago.
    As usual, thanks for another great review. I got caught by a surprise when a review uploads on Monday.

    Trust me, you will not have much fun with the Honda. The "shifter" buttons are a ridiculous mess. You push for all other functions but you PULL on a button for reverse. And the parking "brake" is also confusing to use. What a disaster. And I'm sick of seeing those all digital screens instead of actual gauges. Just boooring. Truly takes the fun out of driving. PS: the paddle shifters are almost cosmetic. It resets itself back to 1st gear when you stop, LOL...

    Honda Odyssey is hands down the best option. Chrysler reliability and cheap quality over the long term delete it from any consideration. The middle seat that you have to take our or port around (put them in another corner of the cargo area) - well what do you do when you get to where ever you are dropping off the cargo - I can't see that ever working. I remember the Chrysler days when the seats had to come out and the people with the seats in their garage looking like "that is what we built this garage for" .. zero sense. Also - I'm again sorry - but people you are playing with back problems doing those seats - I would not risk it if you are like 50 and over on my own.

    No matter how much I prefer the look of Carnival, the build quality is just not there. The whole car feels poorly made the moment you start driving it. I guess all the money go to the design. On the other hand, despite looking very unattractive the odyssey feels surprisingly solid, comfortable and good to drive. However the look is a deal breaker😂. This was our year to choose a new vehicle. Our Silverado lease was up in September. We wanted to downsize and all things were on the table. Sienna was going to be our choice due to needing AWD in Northern Michigan and any vehicle was going to get winter rated tires. Odyssey would have been #2 cause it's an awesome interior and along with Toyota dependability. With that said the other vans were not even in consideration! Had 2 Chryslers years ago and no thanks!! Well We ended up with a CRV! Genthe Honda sold at MSRP. Wanted the Rav4 but Suburban Toyota and Page Toyota were 2k over MSRP, CYA TOYOTA!!

    We have a ‘22 Odyssey Elite, going on a year old and 10,000mi, without issue. We traded in our ‘11 Sienna XLE for it. The Odyssey drives and rides like a luxury car compared to our old Sienna, although the Sienna had more interior volume. We can still fit our family of five and 70lb dog; recently traveled 1K mi to FL and back home, averaged 29mpg on the highway. Couldn’t be more satisfied with how it performed. While shopping for our Odyssey my wife refused to cross-shop the Pacifica, to my dismay. One of the key decision points for us though was the fact that you get seating for eight in the top trim model, which no other van on the market has. We often take family and friends along, so it really is nice to have seating for eight. We come from a family of Honda-lovers. Not that the other options are bad, we just prefer Hondas. I believe the true left-brain choice is the Sienna with AWD, if you don’t plan to tow anything.

    As someone who just bought a minivan 2 years ago( a year old 2019 Sienna literally the week before Covid shut everything down) yeah we bought one not cause we wanted want, but because we needed one with our 3 growing kids. Wife wanted a 3 row SUV but I told here it made no sense to pay more for less interior space and worse gas mileage, just to avoid the minivan stigma. I told her, it's like buying a fridge or other major appliance; you buy it cause you need it, not because you want it! I'm with Zack on this one; get a base model or better yet, get one just off lease like I did and save $10,000 vs new and you'll still get 98% of it's life! Let someone else eat the depreciation on s grudge purchase like a minivan, which is gonna get heavy use and beaten up!

    One thing I was and do look forward in your reviews is the Hybrid take on these cars. Now, I've been considering a mini-van as my 2nd vehicle and really want to add a Hybrid option at home. I want to use it for the city driving as well as road trips. The only true PHEV option is Pacifica but it comes at a hefty price tag for the mid-trim. What do you guys think? I wish Carnival had a Hybrid.

      Odyssey 2023 will be a carry-over from 2022, no changes at all. I was debating hard between Odyssey and Sienna because I've owned Honda/Acura in the past 18 years. Sienna has too many features that Odyssey doesn't offer - Hybrid, AWD, heated captain chairs with ottoman, digital rea mirror, foot-kick slide door opener, 4-zone climate control, bird-view 360 camera. The only advantages of Odyssey 2023 are: rear entertainment system can play DVD, side-to-side captain chair sliding, and Honda has a much shorter wait-time than Toyota. Crossing fingers that my Sienna will arrive in 10 months :)

    I'm surprised that many reviews I've seen of the Sienna do not mention that the middle row seats are not removable, which really reduces total cargo space when you need it. When we moved my son to college the Sienna would not of come close to fitting all his stuff, our Odyssey had no issues holding everything. If you ever need to remove the middle seats the Sienna is a no go.

    your review was the only one I found on-line that accurately indicates the passenger seat in the touring model only has 4-way adjustment (same issue with 2023 model). Honda advertises it as 8-way though (possibly they include the power lumbar adjustment in that number). Its even more confusing because they advertise the 12-way power driver seat as 8-way (the driver seat does have 8-way power plus 4-way lumbar)...so this is confusing to consumers, and your review was accurate on this finer detail - thank you for that!

    e owned several Hondas and Kias. Kia is great value but we found that all of the ones that we owned had many squeeks and creaks and had allo sorts of little glitches like bad radios, ignition interlock problems and sticky sliding doors. Kia service was terrible1 The people are very friendly but push non-essential service, screwed up winter/summer tire replacement twice (put someone elses tires on our vehicles) and a half hour oil change always turned into a 2 hour appointment! Honda also pushed non-essential service but I found them freindly and honest. We also have a Subaru and it is hands down the best vehicle and service. It won’t win a beauty pageant but I am all about practicality so Subi takes the blue ribbon. I would choose a van for after purchase quality and service. I have heard positive things about Toyota so for me it’s H or T. When is the Odyssey going hybrid?

    Thanks for doing these videos! I am driving a 2012 Kia Sedona coming up to the 300'000 km mark in the next year. Debating on what to get used, I am liking the looks of the Kia Carnival and what they did with it! Very well done Kia! Your videos show some great aspects of each vehicle. I only caught at the end, from some of your videos, that you did not talk about "towing". This video you did and I was right away with my ears perked up! I would love to see some video of these vans towing there max capacity of either a camping trailer/sled/boat or utility trailer and see how they handle in the city and country roads in the winter and summer IE loading and unloading the toys at at boat ramp for example. With Kia making the move away from the MINI VAN look, people are going to change to these vehicles as the cargo space in a MPV is so much more greater then in a SUV. I love the van idea, for the amount of times I have had 6 people in there and it loaded, I was not concerned about the space. I have towed lot's of times with my current Sedona van, boat and sled trailer and it works well only then on the 401 the 10' wide trailer drags a bit as expected with the front guard to protect the sled. The $$ price for me will be 90% of my next purchase used or new...having a vehicle payment sucks at any time!
