one thing that hurts rocket league is that the skillset is completely unique to the game.with shooters/moba/fighters to some extent you can take the skills you know from one title and apply it to another. with rocket league you basically only have rocket league. this makes it hardre to funnel in people from other games. on top of that the most common thing i hear from people who tried is about how hard it is. people really either stick with it or get discouraged
but the unique skillset or just gameplay in general can also be their biggest strengths. If you wanna watch Car soccer you can only watch Rocket League. But if you want to watch a moba or maybe a battle royale shooter, there are various titles to choose from and the viewerbase might get spread out a bit more. As an active fan of the Rocket League scene it sometimes "hurts" to see other esports do better than ours. But I also have to agree with Brody Moore, in that it doesnt really matter, as long as the developers and the fanbase support it
Something that Psyonix should put more emphasis on is player retention. If you can get a new player interested long enough to get to plat, they are very likely to stick around for a while.
@@warlock_r i agree, most friends that i introduce to rl only play untill they are gold, and all of their comment are the same, eventhough it was so hard to learn, its really fun to play, but they just doesnt find any "goal" to play anymore beside playing rank or learning new mechanic, unlike other game that have objective like buying skin, unlocking new hero, trying out different build or weapon, etc if maybe they release free item like goal explosion, tire, decals or maybe even new car like once a month that you have to grind for it, maybe it can become some sort of objective for the newer player to play untill plat
@Warlock_R sure they could invest in retention, but people just lose interest over time with all the new games coming out every year. Covid lockdown's skyrocketed players on Rocket League.. They don't need to retain as they just had a huge hype wave They still included 2v2, rumble, and snowdays tournaments And that's what people wanted Rocket league keeps evolving slowly
Rocket League is one of the most enjoyable esports games I have ever played. It has baffled me why it hasn't already been at least in the running. While it seems dumb on face value, but most non-video game players will think any video game in esports could be seen as dumb, its skill ceiling is soo vast that it will take hours and hours to master. My love for the game will never die, hopefully other find this gem of a game. Best, a humble diamond player
I disagreed that it was the non-video game players who thought like that. Based on my experience sharing the game around, Rocket League is very easy to get people who are not into video game, get into it. What's definitely harder for me is to get people who already into specific types of video games, who already have expectations of what a competitive video game could be (shooters, MOBAs, etc.). Really deep mechanical games looks boring to these people. Not to mention people who complained that the "skill gap" is too high to start getting good. There's almost no way for a lower-skilled player to outsmart people who already put hours into, and this turned off a lot of esports mainstream audience. It's the same reason fighting games struggled in the current era.
Popularity brings popularity. Rocket league never got too much support from really big streamers or youtubers. I believe that epic should have sponsored streamers to play rocket league when rl was at the height of its popularity (f2p). Over a million people playing a game at one time is no joke. Also imo they didn't do a good enough job at keeping the new f2p players around (although they did get me. I'm champ now). Had they done all this, perhaps rl would have been as big as valorant.
@@informalchipmunk5775 They did: Epic sponsored a lot of Fortnite TH-camrs and even frickin MrBeast to play it. That tactic is not always a given success even for a mainstream genre, many games have tried using the same tactic only to fail. Given Rocket League's standing nowadays, it's pretty much fine. F2P is not about keeping as many players to stay as possible, it's about impression. People have their own preferences and will leave regardless if they want to. You need to remember that Epic's takeover wasn't the first F2P period for Rocket League, and not even the second one. Rocket League launched as a free download on PS4 and it really puts RL onto the map. Even if people didn't necessarily want to play it, they at least know what to call a "cars playing soccer" nowadays. You know what makes Valorant different from Rocket League, aside from being an already very mainstream genre? Its global marketing push and hardcore appeal. Rocket League simply looks too casual yet too deep mechanically for "competitive" players, but also still too niche among general audience as it lacks actual good marketing. Their marketing is still too focused for a region that already didn't care much for anything soccer-related, North America.
Of course your love for the game won’t die when you’re still only at Diamond😭 I’m at GC2 and just got to 3k hours on steam. Sometimes it be a struggle to play lemme tell you
Gamer entertainment is so different from mainstream. Most sports fans don't play the sport they watch. But gamers can and do watch pros to improve themselves The games you play/pay attention to are such a time sink that they become islands of their own Think of how connected gamers can get to individual esports talent --- watching streams and scrims, learn from them --- that its a giant vertical marketing space Mainstream sports is very laid back and event based. while esports tends to attract fans that play as much as they watch, which doesnt encourage a casual interest
Not really... Esport fans play games casually. Same with most sports fans... This is one of the most biased and out of touch statements I've seen in quite a while. The one thing gamers do more than most other demographics is how they want so desperately to be considered special. Like gaming is some type of mark of honor... They go so far as calling their favorite e-athletes, "Gods." Very few other demographics are as hyperbolic (or dorky). This notion that gamers are exceptional from other sports by trying to improve themselves is a very minor portion of gamers. It's proportional to how many soccer/football fans religiously play games several times a week. Many have their own casual minor leagues / ladder systems as well. The difference is there is no soccer company to manage ranked systems like gaming companies.
@@dxcSOUL Eh, normal sports fans also considered themselves special, too. This is nothing news. Just look at how many GOAT, king, god title throw out to famous football players and you'll see. The biggest reason for esport to not get as casual as sport is because of the stigma about gaming in general. And the fact that there are too many esport in the world already.
@@dxcSOUL Are you okay? This seems an outsized response. I tend to agree with your point, but it doesn't discount the validity of tangarang's. Esports are a great marketing space because they're less mainstream (to an extent, now) and you can get a lot more effective ROI and targeting because of that. Also, yeah, the god thing is a silly point for reasons already pointed out. That's common in pretty much any community to seek and label exemplars of skills or values and call them things like that. It's a lot of the appeal to some people (in a way I only kind of get.) Have a good day.
If I had to pick any esport to make the jump from esport to traditional sport fandoms, Rocket League would be my bet. It's so easy for people to understand what's happening unlike League, Dota, or Overwatch. You also can potentially capture the worldwide enthusiasm for soccer, and I could easily see soccer fans flipping into rocket league fans if they were exposed to it. The skill ceiling is insane, but still incredibly viewable. You don't need to know the intricacies of someone parrying frame perfectly like EVO moment 37, you can just see someone fly into the air, hit it off the backboard and slam it down into the goal. There's beauty in simplicity and Rocket League captures that better than any other esport.
@@cmdrfunk they obviously won’t notice minute stuff like wavedashes or flip resets or even proper rotation but a cool looking shot is a cool looking shot
It really works out because rocket league combines two aspects with wide audiances : Cars and Soccer . I am ersonally a car AND soccer fan so this game was perfect when I discovered it.
For you not being a dedicated Rocket League channel, this video was great. I watch tons of 100% RL only channels and you really summed up everything really well.
I personally think it's the lack of global marketing. I know there are non-English social media, but it's mostly just translation from the English marketing. Not to mention there's still lack of more language options in the game (like why is there no Arabic option yet). Now, I don't want to compare apples to oranges, RIOT and Valve is already a globally successful company that has that kind of marketing prowess. Psyonix is still relatively smaller than them, even when backed by Epic. But I wish Psyonix would start hiring more regional staff, not just for running esports but also the marketing of the game. See how they can reach more audience.
Firstly: Rocket League is probably THE game/eSport I don't mind losing a ton of hours in. The matches are quick and easy to understand when you watch, and you can feel the passion second after second. Secondly: don't think I didn't notice Slayer's Xrd theme during the outro. You guys ain't slick. :)
rocket league is the most healthy game to be an esports because it is like a sport, it will just keep growing if no major mistake is made, slow and steady
The main issue with rocket league is the casual playerbase. RL is not a casual game, you cant pick it up with friends and just chill. The skill gap between each rank is much higher than any other comp game out there. If a high rank player plays with lower ranks, for both parties it isnt fun because its easy for the high rank to do whatever meaning no challenge, and the lower ranks cant do anything. A single player can carry an entire game, cant do that in most other games.
You had me until the end. You can carry in other games, and it’s not that easy to carry in 3v3 RL. You’re one good player, surrounded by 5 not-as-good players who won’t stop trying to hit the ball. It’s actually just frustrating IMO, tryna carry a couple friends in rocket league ranked. Edit: I’m talking about me being diamond, trying to carry my high gold/low plat friends in 3v3. 2v2 I can do it, 3v3 is a struggle to break even. D2 in 2’s, D1 in 3’s btw.
Weather its 2s or 3s, a gc can easily carry 2 plats into champ in 2s and 3s. Hell a gc2 can carry a diamond into gc1 in 2s. Thats why smurfs are a much bigger issue in RL. The skill gap is just too large
I only play with a handful of people in RL, and I only play ranked with them. Our MMR has become about the same, less than 20 off each other. While our skillsets aren't the same, we've all played together long enough that our teamwork gives us an advantage. And having comms is a huge boost too. This season we're at c3
@@Sheamu5 that's cool. my brother and I sometimes play together, and terribly! We play decent with other or randoms, but when we play together we suck. We just can't get into a groove. But we've been fighting over games since childhood haha
I found it hard to support a team, because the rosters change too frequently! I was a G2 fan because they were fun guys and the team stayed the same for years.
It is literally the most sportlike esport ever but nobody gives it a chance because it’s “car soccer” even tho it’s more similar to hockey and is extremely difficult but rewarding
That opening was mindblowing. I expected many things, with car, ball, and hit ball with car amongst those so my expectations were well met. 1:45 - Easy to pick up, hard to master is nice to see... unlike the motion sickness I feel many people will be getting from all the spinning going on with that car. Also, love the easy to understand graph at 2:00. 3:22 - This is frankly refreshing to see; game first and eSport ambitions later when they see the game as a success. It feels a much more natural progression that trying to tailor a game to be an eSport in the first place. 5:06 - The cars being unable to breakdown over a minor tap, flailing on the floor and trying to convince the referee to give the other player a card certainly helps to avoid a controversial element. Saying that though, I think such a mechanic could actually be rather fun in a footie video game. 7:40 - If I were to take a guess as to one issue Rocket League faces in terms of getting it's players recognised, I would say it's the uniqueness of Rocket League. I watch a few fighting game channels and could probably recognise a few pro player names outside of even fighting games I watch/play, purely because these fighting game channels will occasionally mention these other fighting games and their scenes. As a car-based sports game, I feel Rocket League doesn't quite gel with crossing over with other gaming scene audiences. 12:08 - I like that mentality, trying to focus and strengthen the markets you have rather worrying about breaking into rather overcrowded territories. I hope it works out well for Rocket League.
I have played rocket league for about 2000 hours and have watched a lot of esports and genuinely belive that it is the best esport game out there simply by how simple it is, you'll understand the premise within seconds of watching it even if you don't play it. Just make ball go net and you win. I've watched rlcs with my dad and he loves watching me play even tho he never tried the game once.
i think something that can work towards rocket league’s advantage is how similar it is to actual sports. there’s a game clock and score, time runs out, the higher score wins. in games like csgo or league you don’t have that and it makes it super intimidating to people who don’t play or know anything about the game. i think rocket league is the perfect bridge between esports and sports.
I think it just depends on what games the person likes to play. league is a ‘tier 1’ esport but I’ve never heard of a single league player, never watched a single second of league gameplay, never downloaded it or had any interest in it. And I’m certain there are plenty more people who are in the same boat but for rocket league.
Been playing for 2 years now, have around 1800 hours and I can't ever uninstall it. When I want that adrenaline of hitting an insane shot in OT I have to play RL. I can't play anything else.
I have 6k hours in rl and am around gc3 putting me in the top 0.2% players yet when I face pros i feel like a toddler fighting a grown man. Easily the highest skill ceiling in all of esports
But either way. Does it matter if something is tier 1 if you building something for itself. So long as you don’t force esports out of something you are ok.
The problem with eSports going mainstream is that they aren't as accessible and as easily watched, plus there are so many different eSports competing against each other. This means that a particular eSport right now is usually bound to its active player base with a minor amount of casual viewers. This can work for massive games like CSGO or League of Legends that have millions of active players that care about the game. Something more niche like rocket league is going to be supported by far fewer people overall even if the actual events would be more widely enjoyable by a larger audience.
one thing that i think might end up really helping rocket league as a esport is teams like moist who are owned by two massive creators ludwig and critical who have audiences who arent already invested in rocket league and stream there teams games and make videos on how well its going which is really great for attracting more people to the game
They've done partnerships with traditional sports media. I think it was Universal RL with NBC and ESPN have covered Rocket League sometimes. The problem was that, people who already turned off by notion of video game as sports, will dislike Rocket League regardless of its casual appeal. I think the better way to integrate traditional soccer audience into Rocket League, is to have a special league just for traditional sports clubs, which what they did with eFootball in Asia region which really hooked big numbers from the soccer audience there.
I remember playing this game on my friend's PS4 back in 2015 and I remember mentioning to him about how awesome it would be if the game grew big enough to have an esports scene. It's had its bumps over the years but the growth in community around this game is just so amazing. This game is so different from any other game and it's true, it really scratches an itch no other game truly can
I disagree with the part that says; "You can see who's the best player on the pitch", from my experience, the majority of people think they know but they don't. Most flashy players are deemed as the best by most fans, but they are not necessarily the best ones. Unfortunately, the camera pov on RLCS doesn't show the individual prowess of each player so it becomes incredibly easy to underrate pros.
RL is a perfect game and E-Sport for me. I mean Gamnan Style is a top viewed video but it does not mean it's good music. Tastes and colors does not discuse.
What’s good about this game is it can be played casually just once in a while with friends. Or you can spend thousands of hours in a car soccer game until you have little mental capacity and will power to keep going just to get a title that has little value and overall won’t matter in your life. Not like I’d have experience in this…
I've watched rocket league esports for few years now, and it definitely has been my favorite esport thus far. It just can get so hype when you have a team and players you root for.
The skill ceiling is actually the problem, as others have already pointed out. Other games have skills that transfer from one another, the meta is what defines if a team or a player will do well on a season and that is defined by the characters they add, equipment, etc. You do not have that on Rocket League, the only defining factor is the individual skill of a player and his synergy with their team, that makes it very hard to get into, because no skill you acquired on other game will work there and without meta changing, if you enter and you suck at it, you'll never suddenly become good, unlike you do on MOBAs, for example. In that regard RL is more similar to an IRL sport, but on steroids, for the scene to really grow until it becomes a global phenomenon, they'd have to adopt similar strategies, local tournaments, regional leagues, etc. It's not impossible, but, it'd take a lot of time to get there.
I think it's also worth remembering that most of the esports they're competing with (CS;GO, LOL, DOTA, ect) have the sheer longevity on there side, as esports grew from the start all the eyes where on these games, they where always the forerunners and have ridden that wave ever since, to join those ranks rocketleague not only competes with their viewer numbers and their player skill ceilings, but also with thier timescale
@@ImMimicute That's also true, even CS started relatively small, but grew into a juggernaut with every year, I think Dota and LoL had it a little easier, because Riot and Valve went all in on those, RL does have Epic backing it, but, they don't seem to really promote it, as mentioned in the video.
@@ImMimicute exaclty its not fair to judge something like RL vs CSGO just on sheer popularity and how mainstream it is currently. CS was originally a mod for the first half-life and as such there have been iterations of that game for nearly 20 years RL is the second kind of game psyonix has made, but the first one never gained much notoriety and wasn't nearly as good from what I've heard. It's kinda crazy that RL gained so much popularity and has grown so much as an esport considering it hasn't been around that long overall and it came from an indie dev(even if they aren't really now)
One thing that annoys me for RL is the number of hours you have to watch to keep up with the esports scene. It used to be much less with the RLCS/RLRS system. I don’t know if there is an easy way to address that, but I feel like the more total matches results in lower stakes for individual matches (with a few obvious exceptions). I don’t watch anything besides highlights and majors anymore, and even the majors I can’t spend 20+ hours watching RL over 4 days.
There is no "rocket league 2" even being worked on. They are working on upgrading the current game to unreal engine 5 but like I dont see how just doing that would make the game all of a sudden blow up. It doesnt need UE5 to be good
Much like Smash Brothers, I love playing the game but I find it oddly boring to watch even though I'm a casual in both. I'd rather sit down and play it than watch a few competition matches. Freestyle vids are way more mind blowing. Wish the scene all best in the future
I’m also a casual in smash, little less so in rocket league… and I love watching both of them at the top level. Seems like that’s an entirely subjective thing. I’ll watch and play rocket league in the same day, then watch smash melee at night. I just really like seeing what’s possible in the game, and seeing crazy comebacks or Cinderella stories. Very satisfying imo
That's how I feel about sports in general. I've always loved playing sports but found it super boring to watch. I think when I'm old and my knees and back have gone out, I'll enjoy watching.
To me is the other way. I love watching competitive Rocket League. On the other side, I cant never watch more than 3 minutes of freestyle, it is just to boring to me
@@rokko_fable most diehard sports fans IMO are in it for the stories and the drama. Once you start following all the teams, a sort of story starts to form around the league. Then it’s just the same as watching an episode of a tv show, yknow, in a way.
Rocket leagues biggest weakness is the “easy to pickup” part of the equation. I had to put in 3k hours just to be able to do half the things that pros can. And god knows how many hours it would take to be able to do those things well. Unfortunately Rocket League is one of those games where you really need to be good to get the most out of it. That’s not to say that casual players aren’t having a lot of fun, in many cases, they’re having more of it. It’s just that they tend to get bored a lot quicker, because there are much less things to do.
yeah we need more some sort of objective to play the game, beside of those weekly challenges that only get you a boring treasure box where you get "useless will not definitely ever use it" cosmetic item its a game where you play soccer with CAR, give us a monthly car to grind for, instead of locking it behind a pay wall
My take before I watch the video is as follows; I believe rocket should be a lot larger of an esports due to the fact it combines two major real life sports, car racing, and soccer (the worlds largest sport) it basically is the biggest combination of two sports in video game history
I have been part of this game and watch it religiously I have seen it grow to a million $ esport but last few months I feel like I get nauseous and pace is so fast nowadays it doesn't feel so cool it's hard to register or understand skill ceiling untill you try it they need ultimate spectator experience it's gonna be teir S esport soon
This video made me cry. I am a hardcore RLEsports fan, and I hate how our community is underpowered because of the “better” Esports. In my opinion, Rocket League has to be the most exciting one. Not only it’s like soccer/football, there’s more than that. The intense moments in RLEsports are way better than ones, such as LoL, etc. I respect all esports though, but it’s just sad for our community, since most underestimate it
Yep! FIFA and other sports games have “pass” buttons and “shoot” buttons and “tackle” buttons… it’s all so silly. RL is the best soccer game. It’s all the best hockey game, and basketball game. Hands down.
I don't read any news about Rocket League at all online I see news about CSGO, League of Legends, Street Fighter and etc, but I rarely see any articles about RL. I'm not sure if the marketing team fails to do that, or something else, but I think the game is great and it deserves more recognition from the media
Didnt even know evel genius were german... now they are german amigos (i think) but i still played the game since 1 1/2 years. Fun game until you get to c2/3 where smurfing is hugest in my opinion:) And btw amazing video, good research, good cut & good audio. Like it!
I think that... nowadays gamers have their own expectations of what an esports should be and for some reason it can't be too similar to traditional sports: fighting games and sim racing are also struggling in similar ways.
I think one advantage that Rocket League has over titles like League of Legends is that patch changes don't really affect gameplay that much. You can buff or nerf Lee Sin, but not an Octane.
Very solid perspective, hope more extra modes and training options become availible for all platforms, especially the ability to create custom maps. The skill ceiling on PC almost doesnt exist yet while it does on consoles. All in all though, never cares for esports until rocket league, love watching it and even got a chance to see lan at the last rlcs when bds took the cup home. I hope rocket league continues to grow!!
I get to choose what a tier one eSports is. And yes, rocketleague is. All jokes aside, it's so full of potential with the INSANE skill ceiling and the sick moments.
Why did that random commentator assume we knew those pros from the t1 esports… The only esport I watch is Rocket League. If you watch only one esport, you will only know the players from that certain esport.
I think Rocket League needs a closer relationship with Football, as they did with the world cup promoting countries. A Rocket League world cup and promoting football clubs as Barcelona, R. Madrid, PSG, Fluminense, would increase at least the number of curious watching their teams.
Kinda wish I stuck with this game when I first bought it. I played in 2017 then moved halfway through the year. Picked it back up Fr about half a year ago and went from gold 2 to diamond 3. I can only imagine how much high id be in this game if I stuck with it
My guess is that the pacing is less dramatic than a match of counterstrike or the tug of war of a moba. A game of CS is like watching a story unfold, a power struggle. Moments of great anticipation (an impossible clutch to save the match, a massive awp solo carry, a story of an underdog team clawing their way to victory round by round, barely by the skin of their teeth). Rocket League is nonstop action. Its really fun to watch and can be exciting for sure, but it doesn't really compare to the ebb and flow of a game of CS. Pacing and setup into payoff is the key here, it's the most basic guideline of entertainment. Real sports like American football, European football / soccer, hockey, all have better pacing than rocket league because the back and forth is much slower, it has good setup and payoff moments. It gives you the breathing room to understand what you're seeing, and anticipate the outcome of a given play or moment in time. In RL, these moments occur wayyyy faster. A rapid-fire best of 7 match isn't bad, but it's probably not as optimal for entertainment when compared to what else is out there. All of that said, I'm not hating on the game or think it can't eventually make it big. I just think that when it comes to entertainment value, it's going to be hard to be a better spectator sport than CS or League.
If Epic dedicated themselves to creating a big Chinese branch, hiring talented staff in the field in marketing and shit, and releasing a proper version of RL, I could see it being huge there. The hardest part is probably hiring talented individuals, understanding the differences in the market and general communication. Almost like giving Rocket League a re-release in China. I imagine with proper promotion and marketing it could do well, especially if they tease what's possible in the game but set expectations correctly for beginners.
they definitely need to "re-relese" the game on some big asian country, man, i cant believe they cannot access rocket league esport in china and korea, i never realize theres no pro player from those country, if rl get big in korea and china, i am sure it can also be a nice marketing for other asian country
Also I think you're incorrect on the numbers at launch. I played at launch and I remember the servers crashing at 100k players, not the 20k players. That may have been 20k on PC only, as there was a PS4 release as well
Honestly several people get a heavy feeling on their car, and they just end up quitting the game. The people who don't experience this consider it placebo and have no idea, but it's game breaking for certain people.
While rocket league may not be the biggest in viewership, it's most definitely the biggest when it comes to the amount of teams (at least in the United States). Every high school that is trying to start up an esports team almost always starts with rocket league. Pretty much every college in the country has an rl team whether it be an actual varsity team or just a club.
the main reason why rocket league will never die is because it was the first of its kind and has became so big that any copies will look blatantly obvious ripoffs, so they are immune to competitors
I honestly think part of the issue is that while low level Rocket League is very entertaining to play for many new players, it's just not that entertaining to watch low level gameplay. Now you might wonder why this would be an issue and I'd say the reason is that it makes the game unappealing for bigger streamers to play live. While most players won't get into a game from streamers, a large enough chunk of the core gaming audience does get introduced to games by watching the big streamers play them. This is something that acts as a catalyst as those players get friends, who get friends, etc. Basically big variety streamers act as tastemakers, whether you see that as good, bad, or neutral it's just the reality of the current gaming landscape/culture. Rocket League is not a particularly well suited game imho for capitalizing on that avenue. This is far from the only reason while RL might struggle to hit the numbers the big esports do, but I think it's probably a larger contributing factor than one might expect. That said seeing things like moist esports might help break that barrier a bit, especially now that it's both Charlie and Ludwig, that's some big names.
one thing that hurts rocket league is that the skillset is completely unique to the game.with shooters/moba/fighters to some extent you can take the skills you know from one title and apply it to another. with rocket league you basically only have rocket league. this makes it hardre to funnel in people from other games.
on top of that the most common thing i hear from people who tried is about how hard it is. people really either stick with it or get discouraged
a bit like starcraft^^
but the unique skillset or just gameplay in general can also be their biggest strengths.
@@warlock_r i agree, most friends that i introduce to rl only play untill they are gold, and all of their comment are the same, eventhough it was so hard to learn, its really fun to play, but they just doesnt find any "goal" to play anymore beside playing rank or learning new mechanic, unlike other game that have objective like buying skin, unlocking new hero, trying out different build or weapon, etc
if maybe they release free item like goal explosion, tire, decals or maybe even new car like once a month that you have to grind for it, maybe it can become some sort of objective for the newer player to play untill plat
@Warlock_R sure they could invest in retention, but people just lose interest over time with all the new games coming out every year.
Covid lockdown's skyrocketed players on Rocket League..
They don't need to retain as they just had a huge hype wave
They still included 2v2, rumble, and snowdays tournaments
And that's what people wanted
Rocket league keeps evolving slowly
Rocket League is one of the most enjoyable esports games I have ever played. It has baffled me why it hasn't already been at least in the running. While it seems dumb on face value, but most non-video game players will think any video game in esports could be seen as dumb, its skill ceiling is soo vast that it will take hours and hours to master. My love for the game will never die, hopefully other find this gem of a game.
Best,
a humble diamond player

But gamers can and do watch pros to improve themselves
The games you play/pay attention to are such a time sink that they become islands of their own
Think of how connected gamers can get to individual esports talent --- watching streams and scrims, learn from them --- that its a giant vertical marketing space
Mainstream sports is very laid back and event based. while esports tends to attract fans that play as much as they watch, which doesnt encourage a casual interest
@@dxcSOUL did Diego "God Hand" Maradona never exist in your Mandela effect timeline?
@@dxcSOUL Are you okay? This seems an outsized response. I tend to agree with your point, but it doesn't discount the validity of tangarang's. Esports are a great marketing space because they're less mainstream (to an extent, now) and you can get a lot more effective ROI and targeting because of that.
Also, yeah, the god thing is a silly point for reasons already pointed out. That's common in pretty much any community to seek and label exemplars of skills or values and call them things like that. It's a lot of the appeal to some people (in a way I only kind of get.)
Have a good day.
I haven't played cs for a couple of years. A lot of people on Hltv at least also. I would say it's pretty common not to play a game you like watching
There's beauty in simplicity and Rocket League captures that better than any other esport.
yeah i was a futbol fan and when i saw rocket league in 2016/17 iwas instantly enthralled in it
If you haven't played Rocket League, you don't really have any concept of the difficulty of anything you're watching pros do.
I think Fifa Pro Clubs does it better. 22 players coordinating is just mesmerising to see.
Solid video, we will get there one day!
RL is Tier 1 inside my heart. That's all that matters.
That says more about you than RL. Plenty of people can play casually, and just kick it with friends and enjoy themselves.
But we've been fighting over games since childhood haha
what makes rocket league extremely fun to watch is supporting a team and watching them do well. it gives the same sort of rush as watching futbol.
Exactly
Yup, joining the RLCS streams and rooting for up and coming teams is the best, like Furia and Team Falcons
I found it hard to support a team, because the rosters change too frequently!
I was a G2 fan because they were fun guys and the team stayed the same for years.
yeah but esports isnt a sport
@@BariNgozi bad teams to root for lol
Im not a hardcore RL player, but this game is the one of the few deserving of an ESPORTS title.
i think something that can work towards rocket league’s advantage is how similar it is to actual sports. there’s a game clock and score, time runs out, the higher score wins. in games like csgo or league you don’t have that and it makes it super intimidating to people who don’t play or know anything about the game. i think rocket league is the perfect bridge between esports and sports.
I think it just depends on what games the person likes to play. league is a ‘tier 1’ esport but I’ve never heard of a single league player, never watched a single second of league gameplay, never downloaded it or had any interest in it. And I’m certain there are plenty more people who are in the same boat but for rocket league.
Finally some RL ❤ Thank you!
Been playing for 2 years now, have around 1800 hours and I can't ever uninstall it. When I want that adrenaline of hitting an insane shot in OT I have to play RL. I can't play anything else.
Imagine an irl football pitch with hologram cars mimicking what happens in the game
I have 6k hours in rl and am around gc3 putting me in the top 0.2% players yet when I face pros i feel like a toddler fighting a grown man. Easily the highest skill ceiling in all of esports
Mechanics mean everything, if the game doesn’t feel perfect it’s hard to say.
And you need content. Content creators pushing the limits to make fans.
But either way. Does it matter if something is tier 1 if you building something for itself. So long as you don’t force esports out of something you are ok.
The mechanics are perfect. Every movement is down to the player. And when you get solid you realize how smooth it truly is
The problem with eSports going mainstream is that they aren't as accessible and as easily watched, plus there are so many different eSports competing against each other.
100%agree
one thing that i think might end up really helping rocket league as a esport is teams like moist who are owned by two massive creators ludwig and critical who have audiences who arent already invested in rocket league and stream there teams games and make videos on how well its going which is really great for attracting more people to the game
the good thing about RL is that even in low elo its fun to watch
“We are rocket league, and that’s what we are” gave me chills
I think if they could get a deal with espn they could really grow and I'm sure espn would be willing to do it.
Unfortunately, the camera pov on RLCS doesn't show the individual prowess of each player so it becomes incredibly easy to underrate pros.
the music choice in the video was pure nostalgia.
I'm surprised, honestly. Rocket League just hits that unga-bunga monkey part of my brain.
RL is a perfect game and E-Sport for me. I mean Gamnan Style is a top viewed video but it does not mean it's good music. Tastes and colors does not discuse.
Your edits are insane! Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks! Will do!
What’s good about this game is it can be played casually just once in a while with friends. Or you can spend thousands of hours in a car soccer game until you have little mental capacity and will power to keep going just to get a title that has little value and overall won’t matter in your life. Not like I’d have experience in this…
Rocket League is so underrated and hype.
Definitely the best E-Sports imo
I've watched rocket league esports for few years now, and it definitely has been my favorite esport thus far. It just can get so hype when you have a team and players you root for.
I wish that Smash had the type of dev support that Psyonix gives out, we have to fight the devs instead of work with them
The skill ceiling is actually the problem, as others have already pointed out.
CS was originally a mod for the first half-life and as such there have been iterations of that game for nearly 20 years
RL is the second kind of game psyonix has made, but the first one never gained much notoriety and wasn't nearly as good from what I've heard.
I think rocket league 2 on unreal engine 5 will blow up rocket league and I think it will become a tier 1 esport that’s with us for a long time.
There is no "rocket league 2" even being worked on. They are working on upgrading the current game to unreal engine 5 but like I dont see how just doing that would make the game all of a sudden blow up. It doesnt need UE5 to be good
1:38 hello world

I got the chance to go to RLCS 7 and it was electric. It honestly felt like I was watching a traditional sport playoff game.
On the other side, I cant never watch more than 3 minutes of freestyle, it is just to boring to me
watch Dark play 1v1. his mechanics are better than a lot of freestylers
@@rokko_fable most diehard sports fans IMO are in it for the stories and the drama. Once you start following all the teams, a sort of story starts to form around the league. Then it’s just the same as watching an episode of a tv show, yknow, in a way.
You are criminally underrated. Like insanely.
It’s just that they tend to get bored a lot quicker, because there are much less things to do.
yeah we need more some sort of objective to play the game, beside of those weekly challenges that only get you a boring treasure box where you get "useless will not definitely ever use it" cosmetic item
its a game where you play soccer with CAR, give us a monthly car to grind for, instead of locking it behind a pay wall
this is a tier 1 esports youtube channel
My take before I watch the video is as follows; I believe rocket should be a lot larger of an esports due to the fact it combines two major real life sports, car racing, and soccer (the worlds largest sport) it basically is the biggest combination of two sports in video game history
I have been part of this game and watch it religiously I have seen it grow to a million $ esport but last few months I feel like I get nauseous and pace is so fast nowadays it doesn't feel so cool it's hard to register or understand skill ceiling untill you try it they need ultimate spectator experience it's gonna be teir S esport soon
I was at the season 1 finals. One of the best esports moments I've ever witnessed in person.
I respect all esports though, but it’s just sad for our community, since most underestimate it

the only real Esports SPORT isnt even tier 1 is ridiculous.
I think that... nowadays gamers have their own expectations of what an esports should be and for some reason it can't be too similar to traditional sports: fighting games and sim racing are also struggling in similar ways.
Fav eSports Channel + fav eSport. Lemme grabs some chips lol
hit ball with car = 2nd most downloaded epic game of all time
I think one advantage that Rocket League has over titles like League of Legends is that patch changes don't really affect gameplay that much.
With the past World championships in Fort Worth tx rocket league definitely feels like one of the biggest esports, def one of the most hype esports
with Saudi Arabia lan gamers 8 has now broken the record for the largest esport prizepool with $45,000,000
Why did that random commentator assume we knew those pros from the t1 esports… The only esport I watch is Rocket League.
It felt weird but satisfying hearing Trauma center's theme at the beginning of the video XD

1:33 Clint "Rocket League is a Tier 1 Esport" Stevens
I just think that when it comes to entertainment value, it's going to be hard to be a better spectator sport than CS or League.
pls do a video on rainbow 6 esports and its decline

Hot take, the RL precursor was better: Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars!!…. although the name was obviously worse lol
That's true, I see a lot of school teams ranked around c3/gc level. This might help the game in time, grass roots development of players.

Nah rocket league is already a tier 1 esport in my book.
the main reason why rocket league will never die is because it was the first of its kind and has became so big that any copies will look blatantly obvious ripoffs, so they are immune to competitors
I would think Rocket League would be HUGE in countries where football is also huge like Brazil, Argetina, all those SA places.
Im argentinian and the game is pretty popular here, but everyone is casual
Im a big shooter and rpg player but this game is so good and unique
