My rocket league experience consists of me never playjng for like 3 months but then i watch a sunless video and all of a sudden now i really want to play again. Love u sunless, never change
I learned to defend by having two chaser teammates that always passed in front of the goal. I am a defensive legend today because of that early lesson.
Seriously. I swear I’m a gold 1 but my highest rank was diamond 2. A good teammate and patience when defending is key. Now if only I can orient my car in the air like a civilized space egg I’ll be golden.
@@HboutfulLiterally me lol Minus the good defending part, I just never solo queued. Stopped playing ranked because my casual games are more riveting than sitting in gold three trying my best to win but still losing because surprise, having someone who’s played in D1 lobbies is not the best partner for someone who’s only played the game for a year or two. Literally have diamond/champ tourney winners in my casuals.
Thank you so much for this video. I started playing some matches a couple of days ago, after a year or so of absence and 4 years of experience "back then". Your observations are very accurate, and I'm kind of relieved that the way I see Rocket League isn't just mine, but it actually got so... worse-ish(?)
It's impossible to keep up. I talked about it in a recent stream how you have to play an unhealthy amount of RL or whatever competitive multiplayer game in order to maintain your rank.
I legitimately think prejumped quick chats are a good way to communicate what you’d like your teammate to do, considering that “I got it” usually ends with the teammate stopping their chase and assuming you’ll take it, even if u intended for them to pass it
Very true bud, most of my opponents play like they're Grand Champs in Diamond. And many of the players are very toxic, which I really hate. I'm just starting to miss old Rocket League. Because of this, I'm stuck in Diamond, without any chances of going to Champ. I even retired from this game for 1 year, but thankfully I came back. Now I'm just playing for fun, without caring of my rank.
In other games same thing is happening. Like in Roblox, most of the people are toxic and theres a war between two avatars, but before 2020 this didn't happen.
No don't worry abouth them. If u ignore the toxic people and the "mechanical" players you'll get to champ in no time. I guess that you are diamond 3 if yes don't give up you're close !!
Just came back this weekend after over 6 months. I had just as much stress and frustration as I used to but I just loved every minute. For all the broken features and weird decisions, I really love this game
I’ve watched a lot of your videos, but this was BY FAR, the most realistic and funniest video you’ve posted, I re-watched it like 4 times crying with laughter. Congrats on your milestone (360 videos, this one made it a milestone to remember ) and I hope your break has put you in a better place. Looking forward to any future videos (if you will do any more?)
you hit the nail on the head with that comment about how everything in the last 2 seasons just feels like EVERYONE is super good all the sudden. I'm a previous Diamond peak who only play casually, but a couple seasons ago I decided to really start trying to learn how to play better, through the hwlp of many RL youtubers and coaches. I feel 10x better than I ever was before, mechanically and teamwork....and yet.....I can't break Diamond this season. I'm hard stuck Plat 3 Div 4 and lose against highly mechanical champ-like players every single time its my rank up game.
I had a case where my teammate decided to throw the game because i went for a double demo at the start of the game. Apparently it wasn't "fun enough". It was hilarious
I can't flip reset consistently for the life of me, but I can make it to Grand Champ every season by having a really solid defense. You make a good point that a lot of players tend to practice their shot-making and not their shot-defending, or learning how to abuse their hitboxes in 50-50s, etc etc. It really goes a long way... especially in 2s and 3s. Learn tight and proper rotations and defending shots and you'll be so annoying to the enemy team.
I agree with the guy who said about fun. Sure I could play like lethamyr ‘coaching’ where you basically hit a ball ones every 15 seconds and the other time you observe and position yourself. But then it’s really not fun, I’m not mechanically insane, I also don’t troll in aka going for clips every shot. But just playing more active/fast and if opportunity rises do something cool like flip reset or double tap, is just more fun even though truly pointless in ranks below like GC2.
I can hit c3 and get close to gc. The reason is im good at defense. My goal scoring is very standard, ground play is standard, but my defense is a solid brick wall. I trained defense back when I was d3 and it's always stuck with me. Once in a while, I'll have a super great night and just pop off on offense.
I'm an old man (for RL) and do ZERO advanced mechanics, but am usually C1/C2. I just make up for it with game sense, teamwork, speed, and solid rotations. It's how I operate in any competitive game. I'll never compete with the kids on reaction time or aim; have to defeat them with superior strategy instead.
@@jankoo285 Ok but if you don't trash your tm8 because "he is bad" (he's not badder/better than u actually) it's fine. But when someone do useless mecha then trash his/her mate it's just toxic af

Weird. I have hella fun with this game and play with fun people. Don't take it so seriously. I do a bunch of freeplay and training packs then play a lot of privates with buddies. It is way better than solo queuing rank.
I was noticing the same thing when i fired the game up for the first time in a few seasons. Defense and basic fundamentals were completely gone in favor of everyone just mostly failing flip resets and musty's. I miss the days before everyone just dickharded the mechanics they see pro's reliably do in lieu of actual good play.
Haven't watched you in a while, glad i know at least one good move. Your infamous "missing a shot" trick, it's a great trick to learn, super easy to master as well!
For the first time since I started playing, I'm taking the season off. It feels so to be away from the toxicity. Even with chat turned off, I grew tired of people constantly quitting games.
So glad the shift in skill is being acknowledged. Solo players since Xbox release in 2016. I have never seen such a massive shift in the ability of opponents and teammates. Maybe a benefit, maybe to my detriment, but it certainly makes the game hard to “move up” if you’re playing casually.
Facts, no one knows how to defend. The amount of times in 3s that my teammates are nowhere to be seen, or they’re both in the other teams goal after missing a shot they double committed on and I’m last back so I’m shadowing the opponents dribble trying to buy my teammates time to get back and help out but one of them still feels the need to spam “Take the shot!”, such a fun time
I started playing with some plats when I first joined, they were very patient with me and I learned not to ride on anyone's butt as they handled the ball bc I knew I'd mess them up. During all this, I became an awesome defender and shitty offender. I've gotten better, but I still prefer defense. It's just so satisfying stopping a shot.
I got lots of good laughs from this. And you're so true about everyone having mechanics but can't defend. Also I love it when you narrate the chat, especially the people being toxic. It actually makes you laugh, although I know at the time it's irritating.
Haha another banger sunless. I'm just a diehard tryhard in his 40s. Been playing since 2019. Reached champ 3 until a couple seasons back...and now for last couple seasons, struggle to hold champ 1. Every match is so sweaty. Im constantly getting double reset, musty, double tapped. Everyone, including myself, is more toxic then ever(i play with drinks and a good friend...so its fun lmao). Between my tryhard importance of improving at rocket league and chess....i have also visited the same dark places as you. Eventually i gotta give this game up. But even when i try to walk away...as you have...i always return eventually...as you have 😉 im trying to give up the idea of improving and just play to play. I think your video perfectly accomplishes this kind of mindset. You come back and can just laugh at the insanity that is rocket league. You had me chuckling outloud often. Great vid 👍
@emma6648 lol fair...but just one look between my rocket league tracker stats and the average opponent I play...paints a pretty good picture what I am talking about. This was an older comment but funny enough, just deleted the game 2 days ago. I think I am finally done
Have not watched a RL video in probably a year maybe 2. So glad the first one was this fucking amazing Sunless video. This is an absolute professional cinematic with perfect internet humor. What a video.
idea for next rlbs or something lmao. the commentary and production team believe the game ended so they cut back to the desk and start talking about the series as if it’s over. they then get word the ball actually never hit the ground and was still up. v e r y intense. also just picture twitch chat screaming at the analysts that the ball is still up and it’s just looked at as a troll by the desk like yea ok guys, the balls still up yea right, get real. i fucking love you sunless.
lol what a great video man. I’ve been playing casually since 2015 I think. Can usually get to platinum 2 when I try. Not that good but I’m a grandfather. You’re right about 1s. You learn defense or you lose.
Removing snowday was the final straw for me. This went from being my daily go to game for 7 years to turning it on every other week to play a few matches and immediately jumping off.
I fully understand coming back and everyone being amazing all of the sudden I stopped playing for like 2 years in like year 5 or so, and I was champ 2, came back and I was a solid plat, even when I was back to how I normally was, the community was NOT SUPPOSED TO GET GOOD WITHOUT ME
6:49 this has always been a thing in the game, but I feel like it's sort of a feedback loop where the problem will become more severe with time, so a player taking a break and coming back will come back to the problem being way more noticeable than the last time they played.
Bro I tried playing rocket league for the first time in years offer I played on the initial release. I’m a pred in Apex which is the highest rank and I’m no noob on controller and I practiced for hours on rocket league but I feel the game has gotten so sweaty that a casual player can’t have any fun. As a literal level 1 player I’m playing against people juggling the ball through the air. Most games I’m just driving around watching the ball fly in every direction and no getting to touch it once. It’s just boring and to actually have any fun I have to grind hours and hours of practice in free play to even begin to have fun. This game is going to die if as a new player you just don’t have fun because you can’t compete with anyone even in pubs.
Only by watching this made me stressed of all the toxicity struggle and being caught in a loop. I am glad I am not playing it anymore but while watching the video the need to play comes back but the anxiety kicks in at the same time. Not only this game is broken but it breaks people too LOL
taking out trading was the BIGGEST mistake, trading itself was a whole different concept to RL. If you got bored of playing games you could actually do something different the game just gets repetitive atp
The Sunless Coaching bit was HILARIOUS. I mean, the whole video was great, there were many parts I really like especially the end, but the coaching bit was just BEAUTIFUL
My buddy and I have gotten champ duos in 2016, 2020, and now trying again in 2024. We are a few games away. People are better mechanically, but overall feels the exact same difficulty. Only thing we gotta watch out now is the fast kick off lol. Fundamentals and consistency beat fancy air shots.
The "good at offense and bad at defense" thing is actually a direct consequence of skill based match making. If you see someone who is better at you at something, say offensive mechanics, but who is at the same rank as you, that means they must also suck at something to balance out their strength. Whenever I see someone who is clearly better mechanically than me, I generally assume that (a) their defense sucks (b) they ballchase and misrotate (c) their mentality sucks or some combination thereof. Otherwise they'd already be 200 MMR higher than me.
As someone who focuses on 2s into demoing AND defending, I somehow am C1 without really knowing many mechanics other than half flip, wave dash, a little of horse dashing and a ton of shadow defense, and passing the ball
This game is so toxic and I hate how teammates always blame you for their mistakes. I'm 1 year RL free today and it's sad to see the game is still the same.
Thank you for playing Rocket League in 2024 so I don't have to. I actually have not touched the game this year. And have been on and off for a couple years before. It used to be my main game for a good 5 years
The biggest change is that in 2024 absolutely nobody ever uses any chat until after the game. Then once every 20 games people may use it to yell at each other.
Thank you, Sunless for making my conscious a video, i couldnt agree more about the players on this game, so funny how they want to blame you , and also that this a is higher game level, and it still happens
You are right. Every game I’m literally fighting for my life. It’s brutal. One lapse of concentration and you’re scored on. You have to access the play with so much detail. Read what your opponent is doing, understand where your teammates are. I was diamond last season, yet I now cannot get out of plat.
So glad other people noticed this, lol I’m a washed gc and the lack of actual passing plays is stupid. Even in casual everyone is just tryna go for clips than get mad when you’re sitting mid waiting for a pass than they miss the shot💀
I love your experiences with RL because it makes mine feel a little less irritating…the only thing I think I got that’s absolutely terrible is me constantly getting knocked half way across the map by teammates and opponents. (By just a really small tap) 😂
In my defence… you were wide open
True actually, he should of scored that one smh
In sunless's defense, your shot was ass lmao

Edit: thanks for all the likes! This is one of my most liked comment ever!
I didn’t used trading so much but i think the same about this some people had actual value in their accounts and now they can’t do anything with it
It’s like the equivalent of steam removing it on CS:GO or TF2. Completely tanked a whole economy
dude chill its not that deep
Chapter 2 season 6 of Fortnite 💀
Maybe ever.
Great vid 👍
If ur a tryhard why you mad you go against other tryhards?
8:20 it's okay bro he's got a lambo
I need more bozosa in my life
I really be out here getting roasted as a sunless teammate in his videos
no coming back from this one fr
What one where u
Removing snowday was the final straw for me. This went from being my daily go to game for 7 years to turning it on every other week to play a few matches and immediately jumping off.
I fully understand coming back and everyone being amazing all of the sudden
I stopped playing for like 2 years in like year 5 or so, and I was champ 2, came back and I was a solid plat, even when I was back to how I normally was, the community was NOT SUPPOSED TO GET GOOD WITHOUT ME
A minor change I wish they'd make is to up the resolution of the name plates and little boost next to them, it's so pixelated.
Fun fact: Watching Jaws backwards is a heartwarming story about a shark that gives arms & legs to disabled people
9:31 "this is how i moan in my hirls ear" ahh wavedash
Also hits in the soul how EVERY GAME IS AN ABSOLUTE BATTLE FOR YOUR LIFE I LOVE THIS GAME OMG
Best RL video I've seen in my life, hands down!
D3 you gotta be ready for regular flip resets
Thought Process;
‘Oh sunless posted’

‘SUNLESS POSTED’
*video cant load fast enough*
Sunlesskhan retured LETS GOOO!!!!!1!1!1!!
I love to play Rocket League, but sometimes other players make us hate the game by throwing or sending hate to us.
I've been sober from RL for 1 year so far...glad to see nothing has changed
6:49 this has always been a thing in the game, but I feel like it's sort of a feedback loop where the problem will become more severe with time, so a player taking a break and coming back will come back to the problem being way more noticeable than the last time they played.
1:14 bro💀💀
ball chasing joke at 10:50 was underrated
been missing these....great timing. Tons of laughs and smiles. Thank you!!!
At least the hackers bring something new to the game...
Toxicity ? Oh... wait... It was already here
I absolutely would have finished that game against Judey by saying "lmfao ur ass"
Rocket League is a great game that's in its own category but toxic players and passive aggressive drama queens really ruin this game for me tbh
It used to be my main game for a good 5 years
Every minute of this resonated with me. Best true fact: play 1v1 to improve, period
Great vid
A pre jump quick chat lol
Were glad you're back Sunless, you are just as funny and entertaining as we remember you.
Yea man we need you back Sunless ❤️
